  • Echo Canyon is a popular hike which originates at the Northwest end of the Camelback mountains in Phoenix. Footage shot with a Matrix S quadcopter, Hero3+ Black at 30fps. Radio Controlled (RC) pilots should note that the Phoenix Parks department forbids launching and landing RC planes and copters from within the park boundaries, but the parks department does not control the airspace above the park. This flight was conducted in compliance with current FAA regulations for hobbyist RC operation, which basically means it did not exceed 400 feet above the terrain/mountain and was at least 3 miles from an airport. Enjoy!

We use a glidecam and slider for our videos, but we need a drone! These shots are fantastic. You should let us know what you think of our video.

+Xplore More Very nice video you put together of Cathedral Rock. The glidecam is super steady and adds a great effect. It looks like you have a great goal in exposing folks to the beautiful landscape we enjoy here in Arizona. I agree that a drone would really improve your ability to do that. Glad to provide you with any suggestions or experience i may have on that topic if needed. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to your future vids. All the best, Greg

Thank you for your feedback! Since we are just starting out we are trying to figure out what makes the best possible videos. When we are ready for a drone we may just consult you!

Spectacular footage. Thanks for the above descriptions and disclaimers. It's good to show that we understand the regulations and are responsible users of airspace.

Did you need a permit or get permission from anyone to fly? Curious as I have a drone as well and would love to shoot a project there.

Hi, No permit needed as far as I know. The park is just over the 5 mile clearance distance from Sky Harbor airport, so you don't need to contact the FAA to request permission. The park itself has a rule that you cannot take off or land from the park. (Typical rules are in place in most city parks). There is a typical misunderstanding from the public, in that they believe they control the airspace over their property. They do not, it is the realm of the FAA, and the FAA rules are that you fly lower than 400' above the terrain the drone is over at any given time (so you can be 400' over the top of the mountain if needed) and not over crowds of people, nor at 'major' sporting events, nor in National Parks. (National forests are fine). Check the FAA rules for the latest regulations and be sure to be in compliance. So in short, the park cannot forbid you to fly over it and film. They can only forbid you to launch or land within the park boundaries. I would set up on a city street next to the park and fly from there. Just be aware that homeowners there may be more sensitive than most because 1) they are already tired of all the traffic and congestion due to hikers, etc and 2) they are rich in that area and some think they can control everything. So to keep peace stay clear of the homes as much as you can and pass over them pretty high and quickly. But it's your call, you don't have to do that... but it may make your day, and theirs, more pleasant. Oh, and the police typically aren't too well informed themselves, so it's best to do all possible not to get a homeowner upset. Good luck!

Greg Porter thanks Greg! Not sure the Karma has the range your drone does but I’ll give it a shot. I made a couple videos recently from Picacho Peak... wouldn’t mind your critique... ruclips.net/video/px3oGWtJ3XE/видео.html

Nice video, I really liked the use of hiking and drone footage. Especially there as I'd never realized they had such steep areas. I think you're onto something with mixing things up rather than just a pure drone flight. Good on ya.
