Great information Chris! Thank you so much! For a job to leveling it out with sand, how much would you charge on approx. or a little less than 1,000 sq backyard?
Nice show, very complete, as you say pretty simple. I like that. I am a golfer so the USGA golf course sand was no surprise. I definitely was concerned about adding things to my lawn which has happened doing a winter rye overseed. We do not do the winter rye every year because of H2O consumption. With that being said, what is your opinion regarding winter grass? We live in the Phoenix metro area. North East of downtown about 10 miles. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Thanks for the comment and watching. I do enjoy looking out the window and seeing a green lawn during the winter but I also think about the breaks from maintenance. It comes down to your own desires for having a lawn really.
Awesome video! Quick question, at which height did you set that Honda mower to prior to leveling? My mower only goes down to 1 inch and I'm not sure if that is low enough to make leveling effective.
Tasks leveling can occur at any HOC. The idea is to mow as low as you can get and then level accordingly. If the grass blades are long enough after your “scalp” then you’ll be able to level or broom your material in past the grass blades. This will actually help your grass to continue to photosynthesis and push through your leveling material faster.
Trick question? You should be watering routinely by now. Here I’m the south watering a lawn never stops. Just backs down to once a week during the winter. After leveling, watering can commence at any point and time.
im planning to put down some Bermuda seed...I cut down my ryegrass as low as possible...next step? Put down some top soil over ryegrass? then put seed over it ...correct? will seed grow well over ryegrass, will Bermuda roots be able to grow through rye?
Sooooo normally we don’t recommend over seeding existing Bermuda lawns. Instead you’ll push growth of the existing Bermuda. However if you working with bare dirt and or got rid of the rye completely then Overseeding is possible. I’m EP rye will die back with our heat so I wouldn’t worry about the rye. Your focus will be growing the Bermuda seed. Plenty of water and cover with 1/4inch of peat moss to keep moist.
Hi there and assuming you’re working with Bermuda, we typically like to wait till there’s a green haze of new grass springs emerging before scalping and aerating. The fertilizing we start with mid March when soil temps are around 65-70degrees. The level can be done at the same time as all the above mentioned.
@@vinhgolf all grass types need 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. You will have to measure your irrigation output to test all zones to ensure you getting the recommended amount.
Play sand from Home Depot is clean, no pebbles! I use black kow or the cheaper bag that was 4$ cheaper. It has some small sticks but they will float to the top and the Mclane will pick them up easily. We just used the Pro Plugger today for some bad dead spots. 36 plugs just in one spot! Then I ate shit! 😂 tripped over the damn Lanzie leveling rake! 😂😂😂
@@shate74662000 one bag of black kow and one 50lb bag of sand. Put the compost in first and then add sand. Sand is heavier and will work itself down easier! I mixed in a gorilla cart.
Thanks bro. Ready to level for the first time next spring
You got this!

When I mentioned adding stuff to our lawn, I meant weeds &/or grasses. Not cool. Cheers

Great video, this really helps a lot. How do you determine how much sand will be needed?
Thanks for watching and we simply stick to the formulas. 1/4 inch in height per 500sqft requires 1yard of sand.
What kind of 50/50 mix do you use and where do you buy it?
Golf course sand and screened compost all from Desert Rock.
Quick question sir, I’m screaming out rocks with a 1 inch square mesh, are 1 in rocks ok to leave when preparing sod installation ?
I try to remove 1 inch or larger. Just me being very particular. Anything larger definitely has to go though.
Chris, after you do all that leveling do you water it???

Awesome vid

Good info. Is it ok to use patio/paver sand?
I’ve never personally used it but there are plenty of lawn enthusiasts that use mason sand which I believe is similar.

Can I begin to scalp, aerate, fertilize, and level?

We are in Florida and i am thinking about replace the grass to bermuda from Baheia, do you recommend for Florida area?
Bermuda thrives anywhere in the South. Really comes down to personal preference on desired cut height. St. Augustine is very popular in FL also.

Sounds like you’ve been gettin your dirt right. Love it!
Did you mix black kow with play sand or you level separately? What is your ratio for top soil and sand? Thanks
