So while the thought of a automatic trans makes many of us sad and/or sick to our stomachs....
Having the option for it opens the door for a lot of people. I've been driving and tuning Japanese cars since the early 90's. Along the way i have met some really cool and passionate car enthusiasts who were unable to drive cars with a manual trans because of different disabilities or health issues. If you've ever been to large car events or SCCA race weekends I'm sure you've noticed at least one person in a wheelchair. Having been to a dozen or so SEMA shows over the years, I've met quite a few car fans who were either in wheelchairs or Jazzys etc- who built some really cool cars that were equipped with auto transmissions out of necessity. One of my closest friends has MS and has lost movement in both legs, but owns a number of JDM cars that HAD to be anto trans in order for him to drive them. He actually sent me a text with the link to this video LOL!

At the end of the day, Toyota is a business, and if offering an auto helps it sell more cars then that's great. Still having a manual to pick from should keep the enthusiasts happy. I can understand losing the 'exclusivity' of a manual only line up will upset the fan boys, but as long as there's the option for either transmission they shouldn't complain. Don't like auto? Then don't buy that variant.

  • @danielcluley870

If I bought a GR, I would probably want manual just for the fun of it, but for my Corolla Hatch SE daily I got a manual just for the convenience. I could see a market for this for people who DO actually want to use a GR as a daily.
My hatch is sportier than most with some mods, but I am really happy I got the auto due to driving in stop and go traffic and on the interstate mostly. Having that option for a fast daily that can be both a grocery getter and a track car for somebody that wants to do that makes sense.

It actually doesn’t have a torque converter, ironically. I watched a video on the transmission and how it’s built, there’s no funny looking torque converter. It’s really a series of clutches that have super close ratios much like the manual. In actuality the first gear of the auto and the manual is the same ratio, but gears 2 through 6 are actually closer ratios than the manual, and the last 2 gears are for high speed cruising.

Not sure how it is over in the US market but here in Aus the i30N and Elantra N have been dominating performance car sales (auto and manuals). The only things you see at track days and mountain runs are N cars. Why though? Because the price to performance ratio + track warranty has sold them. The GR and Type R are too expensive to compete in Aus. What a shame as I’d love to see more competition, but it’s fair to say Hyundai has won the hearts of most enthusiasts down under.

Fun street car but falsely advertised as track capable when the transfer case overheats in sometimes less than 10 minutes and you go into FWD. Ask me how I know… Civic Type R has been a much better platform so far. There is still some thermal management issues, but I’m not dealing with a car going AWD to FWD on its own…

Its a cool car but they all have overheating issues when u track them ! Way to crappy of a car to build for the track and only get 3 or 4 hotlaps out of it because the AWD system overheats quickly ! Ask all those folks whose cars burned up on the side of the road just driving not even on the track racing what they think about the car ! DO NOT BUY THIS CAR IT WILL EVENTUALLY CATCH ON FIRE AND BURN HOPEFULLY NOT WITH YOU IN IT !

$50k plus possible markup. Easy pass for me. Plenty of used cars for that price that are just as fun to drive.

Just imagine if Honda did this with the Civic Type-R...don't think it's gonna happen, though.

To be honest, I'm a die-hard Toyota fan, and I love the technology in these cars but not a fan of the look of either the Yaris or the Corolla.

In german motorway 🛣️ none speed limit.
GR Yaris 1.6L turbo can do multiple runs without the car going flame 🔥.
But for GR Corolla 1.6L Turbo issues with internal that failed & that's why it totaled 🔥. There's no warranty coverage, news on multiple websites says Toyota USA ignoring the complaints & blamed the owner.
    -
What about the Toyota USA GR Corolla 1.6L Turbo 3cylinder that bust into 🔥 ?
Are those issues still ongoing without any warranty? or recall? (*Yes*)
Or is it just US Toyota Quality issues to be blamed?
And also 2025 US GR Corolla didn't update the dashboard layout worst with that infotainment rob visibility.
Just look at the 2020 Toyota GR 1.6L Turbo 3cylinder didn't have any news that the car goes to flame 🔥.
2025 GR Yaris Improvement facelift & interior massive update from previous model.
Big change "the dash layout is you don't have the old infotainment sitting proud on the dash" it's actually 5cm lower & that means you get better visibility.
