Fencing _is_ an elegant sport
This does not, however, mean fencers are inherently elegant people
Olympic fencing just devolves into two people running at each other to get the first hit. It's basically swordplay without any swordplay.
@@grahamhill676 If you are a fencer and really think that "running at each other to get the first hit" has no swordplay skill....you are the one lacking.
@@johnapostolopoulos4 I didn't say fencing. I said olympic fencing. It's actually worse than regular fencing. There isn't enough emphasis on not getting hit. It devolves into two people trying to score the first hit without any mind to self preservation.
@@grahamhill676 facts
@@grahamhill676 That is correct BUT since i ve done both olympic fencing (sabre) for 16 years and hema fencing for 4 years, i can tell you that "running at each other to get the first hit" has alot more skills and tecniques involved than you think. Also alot of conditioning, training etc.
The reason it has gone from "dont get hit" to "get the first hit" is mostly because its a sport and not a "martial art" where you need to survive the fight (and it also needs to be energetic, you dont want 2 fencers staring at eachother for 5 minutes just so one of them "might" make the first move), but again that takes a considerable amount of skill.
Imagine challenging some guy to a duel because he disrespected your woman and the two of you just slammed bodily into each other and then lying there on the ground with a concussion.

0:24 Ah yes, a double knockout, no move has ever been this elegant!
In fencing, it is customary to very quickly kiss your opponent during the match, as seen in the second shot. In the third, we see how, in rare cases, opponents fall to the floor in an immediate cuddling session after striking each other. This is considered good sportsmanship, and is a way for competitors to show their undying love for both the sport, and their opponents.

something about the opponents checking up on each other is very sweet, especially when they're all masked and you can't see their facial expressions, but you can still tell what they're feeling
0:38 This is a drama in a few seconds. They initially begin with a prepared forceful lunge at eachother, however, after realizing what they are in for, they have a realization. In old Germany, so like Weimar and the German Empire, some people actually wanted to get slashed across the bare face on purpose, because slash scars were considered a sign of masculinity.
So strange that the audience is cheering and having a good time when two people have swords pointed at each other but the minute they simply bump into each other they go "ooh" and fall silent.

I remember this one time I was fighting this dude twice my size (Like literally, I'm an average 14 but been fencing for 5+ years so pretty decent) and we were fencing epee, this guy is known for being super aggressive, because he's ex-sabre. Anyway, we got going and he soon hit me on my neck. He hit me on the leather coating of the helmet+ the leather neck lining underneath. Dude hit me so hard my neck started bleeding, was on the floor for about 2 mins unable to breath properly, rethinking life choices lmao. Got so pissed with him that I made sure I beat him that day. I've seen this same dude break his Epee on people... multiple times... because he hits so hard. Not to mention his swords are always by Leon Paul so they ain't cheap, or Chinese for that matter. My mom would whoop my ass if I did that ;-;
OMG 😱 now i feel lucky nothing like that has happened to me, damn
Leon Paul blades aren't exactly very light or flexible either. That's my experience with their saber blades tho.
@@snowblow1984 Flexible or not, How hard must one hit for a thick piece of metal to snap, I mean like I've been fencing for 5+ years and have never broken anything except the soles of my shoes lol, Maybe that's cuz' I've been raised asian and if I break anything my mum will break me but that's not the point I'm tryna make. As a fencer you must know how hard you can push a sword until it's breaking point, like c'mon that's pure common sense imo.
@@definingspeed tbh most sports like idk boxing leave someone bleeding after every single match so if you do sports then you have to prepare mentally that something like that might happen sometimes lol. for example my fellow fencers actually break each other's hips from time to time. it happens.
i'd actually love to spar with that aggressive dude because he sounds like a challenge
@@definingspeed btw me and my other friends break our swords from time to time to pieces. it doesn't take that much power, it's more about bad landing technique. so if he breaks his swords constantly he probably sucks at landing his sword properly lol
The self-defence aspect in this style is obviously still a top priority.

I love how they immediately ask the other person if they’re alright

Can you imagine how many actual, real-life, to-the-death duals ended with both opponents killing each other?
From what I've heard, many (if not most) duels someone would get stabbed in a fight, lose, but walk away from it. They would then die in the following days usually from infection.
From what I've learned that sort of thing used to happen a lot when young unexperienced nobles would fight each other. When the fight was between experienced ppl they would almost always avoid that sort of risk cus if both of them died then everyone looses, so the fight would mostly be solved with a first blood drawn and deaths were avoided, cus those ppl were important members of society (being nobles)
@@fredericororiz6500 Well, that was why dueling got legally banned in most places by like the 1600s since people who actually mattered dying from it caused all kinds of inconveniences. Which in no way stopped people from doing it illegally anyway until the end of the 19th century or so because _muh honour_ was SRS FKN BZNS and law enforcement was whatevs so, yeah. (It's been said the Great War put the final nail in its coffin because after such industrialised mass slaughter the whole concept became patently ridiculous.)
But yeah duelists who had any idea what they were doing took some care to avoid "mutual kill" scenarios - European ones anyway, the Japanese notoriously regarded that sort of thing as a pretty acceptable outcome.
Double hits are quite common in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), which is a sport that strives to replicate Late Medieval or Early Modern sword fighting, certainly more accurately than Olympic fencing.
Most of the time people actually trade hits at the same time so it was probably very likely.
I love how in the last one it just looks like their hugging as they fall to the ground.
The German moderator said "Marius, just stay up there" right when he fell down :'D
I love how the ones in the third shot just give up and cuddle like "fuck this we already got humiliated enough might as well"
I love the last clip. Teammate vs teammate and they go for the exact same lunge and collide with eachother
Nice to see the genuine concern when their opponent falls or when they collide

Got it, when you can't touch your opponent with your sword, touch then with your entire existence
The have them kill themselves because of the depression
So, I’ve done combat sports for a while, and one thing I’ll never understand is how falling out of the designated area somehow turns athletes into sandbags. Like, I get it if the fall was high or the collision was rough. I’ve fallen out of a few rings and it sure as hell doesn’t feel good. But a lot of fighters react to falling out of the ring like being hit by a freight train.
I think it's mostly the unexpected shock factor.
Real athletes who have taken a tumble learn to relax when they lose control of their body instead of seizing up and flailing like a panicky child. Relaxed bodies are hurt far, far, far less from falls and this is extremely common knowledge.

Yes, because unlike HEMA combat, FIE fencing is a sport. The goal is to score a touch. While in HEMA, the goal is to kill your opponent and stay alive (not in modern hema, but in the manuals they use)
@@Saluspergratiam Yes, true, HEMA as a sport filled a gap in martiality left by FIE fencing's chosen direction, and the other way around is also true, being more care free about following strikes allows one to freely chase those milliseconds, they add up after a few years, and olymic fencers are really fast on their feet, with quite a reach. And it feels more "sporty", I guess.
Either way, a sport is what people in it make of it.
This would never have occurred to me.
I'm now imagining two enemies charging at each other, hitting each other like trucks and falling to the ground both a little disoriented.
I wonder how many times these things happened in real sword fights. Two guys dueling to the death just lunge at the same time and bonk their heads, then just sit there feeling like dumbasses.
