Master Kano's philosophy is much more practical than aikido's Ueishiba and easier to understand. His concept to make judo into an education system is the greatest contribution to martial arts in my opinion, that alone spearheaded the rest of martial arts to follow through the Do revolution, his contribution to the creation of the Gi and Dan ranking system is genius too
I heard he and Morihei were great friends and I have noticed alot of similarities in the moves. Alot of people think Aikido is "diet martial arts" but I am very fond of it, and very fond of Judo.
I’m a BJJ guy, and I love the structure and categorization of Judo classes and techniques. I prefer the Japanese names for techniques because they are far more descriptive of what the move is than the English and Portuguese names. Jigoro Kano was ahead of his time. I think the closest modern equivalent would be John Danaher.
I was taught that Kano believed that if victory in Judo depended on extreme athletic ability or strength, then Judo would be pretty useless. Stronger people were defeating weaker people. But if Judo can impart skills that allow the smaller, weaker person to consistently win, then it offers something special.
Chadi whenever I view your videos; I learn some fascinating facts of either the founder of Judo or those he trained. Thank you for sharing this history regarding one of the giants of the Martial Arts.
This is the greatest value judo, not only it is a art of self defense, but it develops the mental, spiritual and etiquette. Those who criticize the purpose of kata probably didn't understand this. Not all martial art are martial oriented , that is something I feel missing in modern martial arts and non oriental ones. There are much more than learning the art to fight, spiritual and mental development is equally important!
Apparently, Kano was an avid reader of Western philosophers like John Stuart Mill. He studied political and social philosophy extensively, as well as ethics.
I got his book " the cannon of judo " and it is very good in instruction and detail. Also shows how to bring back people from unconsiousness due to throw or drowning. I like the 2nd and 3rd throws that can be done from a failed attempt . Excellent book.
I'll tell you something. People like Kano, people who forcing people to educated themself or in any way they want to help other people, are boring. But when shit starts to roll, people are asking for help those boring people.
I don’t see anything boring about that type of person. I see someone wanting to help others. If others find that boring then that says more about them than anything else.
Is that Kazuzo Kudo you have referenced ? He's a very interesting character, published 2 ground breaking books on Judo in the 60s. I heard Kano suffered from diabetes - wouldn't have been nice as I'm guessing it would've been pre insulin ? Great video !
This man arguably contributed more to martial arts than anyone else in history. “Maximum efficiency minimum effort”, “the best defense is a good offense”. Designing judo to be for education (the first martial art to do so). He also invented the belt and dan system and the gi, he was the first Asian member of the international Olympic committee. I’m sure I’m missing some things… point is this man was a innovator of genius proportions

hey can I ask you something? i've never taken a judo or jiu jitsu lesson before and I was wondering whether this "stahara" exercise is a commonly taught exercise or of it's a little known exercise that most schools don't teach today ejmas.com/jnc/jncart_cptsmith_0700.htm does this exercise usually get taught at judo and jiutitsu schools today or has it been largely forgotten about?
I found so much ego on the history, the proud of being and doing something great blind ones mind that's why we dont tolerate anybody who think different or don't pay attention to our ideas. Can anyone recognize the martial arts as a whole? Why i need to get credit of something that is always there, the movements the patterns, the instinct of defense, the animal motion, the human condition, why i need to put one person so high, when is just a matter of practice and deep self-knowledge to interpret the other.
The greatest martial artist ever. Great man, educator, martial artist and person. I owe everything I have to Judo and his way and philosophies.

The fact that Danaher studied philosophy made him classify and create the systems. Being an intellectual is needed in martial arts

He loved Women's judo because he said it was a great example of the Judo he wanted
@@Chadi the exact contrary of Rinner Judo...besides Rinner is not a judoka... he is practicing something but not Judo
Sounds like what you are saying is a “living room” is what we in the West would call a “study” - desk books etc.

Read George Kerr’s autobiography. It tells you a lot about the way judo instructors originally tried to perfect the whole person.
Chadi, I feel Very thankful for your job. It's helped me a lot to teach My students and It has made my judo and JJ reviews deeper. Thanks!
It's an honour 🙏🏻
Apparently, Kano was an avid reader of Western philosophers like John Stuart Mill. He studied political and social philosophy extensively, as well as ethics.
Exactly! He was a progressive
Kano’s daughter, Noriko Watanuki, was probably the best judoshi of the children, and ran the women’s division dojo (Joshi Bu) for many years.
A great woman
His aversion to swaping sake cups REALLY aged well for 2020!

Many successful people structure their lunch. Sam Ovens talks about this: Decision fatigue. It's why Steve Jobs wore the same attire daily.

Un grand merci
The sentence he said most often was "Nani Kosu?" Which litteraly means, 'what is this shit?". No - really. I just can't make this stuff up!

"Lesser known facts" might be a better name for the video, seeing as the facts are indeed known.
Sure
Did Kano know about development of BJJ? Or was that after his time?
He was alive, but he was more involved with the Olympics, in the 30s Helio and his brothers were having challenges.
"He talked too much (like me)" 😂
I mean i do talk a lot:p
