The sense of kata in judo is even more difficult to grasp than in karate, where they are more visually appealing. The point is that being judo and karate practiced as sports, kata have become an aesthetic exercise. While, at least in karate, they were actually sort of "text books", to know and "automate" reactions as needed. I suppose this applies to judo as well.

I think its important to ackowledge one major difference between kata in Karate and kata in Judo: Bunkai. I am fascinated with Bunkai because imo it is both the dumbest/most useless and also coolest/most awesome component of Karate kata. There is much less ambiguity and imagination in Judo kata than in Karate kata and I feel like we cant have a discussion about kata if we dont address the topic of Bunkai.

I still think sports Judo will prepare someone well for a 1-1 unarmed situation, but the points you raise here are completely valid.
BJJ seems to be beating us on this front. While there are schools dedicated to sport, there's been a push in recent years (particularly from the Gracies) to maintain a self defence curriculum. And particularly in the US they've been beating Judo to the punch by proactively reaching out to local police departments.

I think the first step for any martial art learning to practice true self defense is to start doing a couple classes a month outside, with ground beneath your feet.
Seems to me we are in an age where even great martial styles have a deep disconnect with what throws to the earth actually feel like and why prolonged ground work is a different beast without tatami.
Knife and gun work also really ought to be part of a self defense regimen as well. Grappling with someone who has a foam knife is an eye-opening experience.

    • @fennec812
      @fennec812 3 года назад +1

@@Chadi I suppose I mean in the systems that have deeply penetrated the west (Wrestling, Judo, and BJJ). If I recall, Indian grappling also traditionally occurs in a pit.
I think the disconnect is mostly apparent in competitive rule sets, however. In Judo all throws are judged against a criteria of quality rather than amplitude. While you certainly can knock someone out with an O Soto Gari, it’s much more likely you do it with a massive Ippon or Kata Guruma.
BJJ, of course, severely downplays throws to the point that they are increasingly inconsequential in competition. Wrestling does score points for control but emphasis is on the pin. I think the surprisingly cushioned MMA ring also doesn’t give much opportunity for knock out by throw.
It seems to me that a lot of focus is given to developing conservative, “high-percentile” techniques. There isn’t anything wrong with this on its own, but I know people even within my own training circuit that downplay the brutality of throws.
I’ve lately come to a place where I believe high amplitude throws in which the thrower could have driven the uke’s head into the ground really need to be treated with similar respect as submissions. They effectively achieve the same ends. At the very least, I’d like to see more rule sets where throws are scored by amplitude and rivaled by gains an athlete can accrue on the ground. By focusing wholly on submission, it incentivizes never learning how to properly commit to larger throws that could end fights into themselves.
Of course I’m mostly referring to BJJ here, but I have the inverse criticism of Judo which, by and large, has players often throwing themselves into disadvantageous or passive ground positions to acquire Ippon.
Tl;Dr while I would never expect a rule set to be perfect, it seems like we are in an era of hyper specialization in which the methods/environment we learn in obscures or underplays the potential violence of high amplitude throws.

But Funakoshi did incorporate a number of throwing techniques in his karate that sure look a lot like Judo. Also, keep in mind that Funakoshi chose to popularize his karate by teaching it in the universities, whereas Kano got Judo into the lower schools. Judo was basically taught as phys. ed. in those schools, meaning that almost everyone took it. So by the time someone started karate, they might already be a shodan or above in Judo. Only natural that they would use the Judo they learned when they did their karate. Why not?

Many of the old jujutsu scrolls refer to jujutsu by the name "torite kenpo" among other names. They often don't use the name "jujutsu". Kempo is the same as kenpo. Kenpo is pronounced "kem po" because the "n" softens when it is followed by the "po" as a rule of Japanese speech. "Kenpo" means "fist law" and is "chuan fa" or "quan fa" in Chinese. Mitose-sensei just picked the English letters that he thought would make Americans pronounce "Kenpo" correctly. Smart.

The first thing I learned about martial arts is that if you don't spar with a technique its useless, the second thing I learned is that #1 isn't always true. I am a meagerly skilled Judoka, but I have pulled off throws in Judo that I had never tried before because I have begun to intuitively understand how Judo works.

9:02, with their arms in the air like some kind of fowl, what is the idea to that? It looks odd, but behind this, there must be something. These guys did it well, where is it associated to some Japanese custom or is it Judo/jiu jitsu? Then the purpose? Where lifting the arms can help creating, as with jumping jacks, if I remember, where a person takes in plenty of air. Some might foolishly discard such where not being able to think of it, some could just call it stupid. Maybe, unless there's something to it.

The highly formalized kata of Judo is pretty much crap, but a tradition of Judo and serves it's purpose. If we're talking about pressure testing modernized self-defense drills, then I am all for it. I just wonder if kata is the correct word. You have kata or forms in many martial arts and they all resemble traditional Judo katas in style and execution.
