This is Part 1 of a series of videos on How to Make Nuno Felt .
In the 1990’s, Polly Stirling, an Australian fibre artist together with Sachiko Kotaka were exploring ways of bonding wool fibre to open weave cottons and silk. They named this felt Nuno Felt.
Wool fleece or other fibres are bonded to and through an open weave, lightweight fabric such as cotton muslin or silk gauze. "Nuno" means cloth in Japanese so Nuno Felt is an open weave cloth bonded to wool fibre.
Nuno felt can be a very lightweight, fabric more suitable for our warm Australian climate.
Let’s explore some different methods and tools that can be used to make a sample piece of nuno felt where the wool is going to cover the entire piece of silk. In the next video, I will explore ways to apply decorative elements to the loose woven material and in the third video we can explore ways to layer threads, wool , silk and small pieces of scrap fabric to create a complex piece of nuno felt like a painting.
If you do a search for Polly Stirling , you will discover a delightful video where Polly talks about her journey from weaving to Feltmaking. Then, Polly talks about her joyful explorations into incorporating cloth with wool and other fibres.

Nuno Feltmaking is great for both artists who wish to make very even and professional looking work as well as those who want to engage in joyful playing with colour , texture and textiles.
I am no feltmaking expert. I have the good fortune to have a mother, now nearly 90, who has been a passionate and adventurous felt maker and textile artist. I am able to draw on the detailed notes she kept over many years. Through these videos I am exploring different ways of working with wool and felt. I simply invite you to come on this journey of discovery with me.

You talked about under felting and then doing more. How do you know when to stop? And how do you keep the shrink even? I'm at the very beginning of my felting journey. I'm making a pair of slippers and I'm loving creating textile out of wool I found on a fence 😂.

wow, that was a timely question... I am just in the process of making a video for beginning felters. In this video I will answer your question with the benefit of images which will hopefully make it all clearer. I would love your feedback if you get to watch it. hopefully I will be able to finish editing this week. Really good questions and yes all of these things are possible.

That was very interesting! Could that work with a lightweight cotton instead of the silk?

Yes, absolutely. really lightweight cottons are great. Some people use cheese cloth that is light and very open weave. Also muslin and Lawn cottons are good. if you can breathe through it and see through it, the fabric will work for nuno becuse the wool fibre scales can pierce through and lock in to the fabric. Best is natural fabric. while it is possible to use artificial fibre fabric, it can mean a lot more effort and work to get the wool to attach. Thank youfor your question and especially thankyou for watching!

Even better with lightweight cotton , especially open weave like a medical gauze or very thin voile . If you can see through it, breathe through it, it is a good candidate for nuno felting. Beware of synthetics which can be very dense even when thin.
