Strengthen Your Felt: Wet-Felting for Beginners
Can you mend a piece of wet felted wool after it has dried and been pressed? It is always worth trying and in this video that is exactly what I am trying to do.
Things go well when we follow all the instructions but... I am well known for asking... What happens if I dont?
Wet felting is easy to do and very rewarding. Wool is such an amazing fibre and feltmaking involves a magic process of turning fibre into fabric successfully and easily.
It is going to be possible to add more wool as long as the item has not been fully fulled ie worked so hard that it is smooth and not fluffy at all. If your surface is still a little fluffy then this process is worth trying.

    Hi, love your video. I have done a bit of nuno felting, happily. Do you think silk fabric is better to use instead of cheese cloth for a wall hanging? Thanks so much.

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist Месяц назад

      Thank you for watching! Interesting question. How much of the silk or cheese cloth will be seen in the final work? And you could use both. The open ness.. of the cheese cloth makes it easier to felt through than most silk but the silk will look better. So it depends on what will be seen. Also the cheese cloth is less likely to be attacked by mothy things than silk. As your project is a wall hanging. It mainly needs to be strong in the right places but you have the capacity to back/line it or some of it with a fine cotton afterwards. It really all depends on the effect you want. You may have so much more flexibility with a wall hanging. Also depends how long it needs to last. Yours may need to be very very strong. Or you might be looking for transparency and lightness. I feel like I havent helped much here. Finally the key difference is the openness of the fabric which varies so much. Silk can look great but be dense so hard for the wool to migrate through. The experts would say... seeing as you are looking at doing quite a lot of work here, you should first try some little samples of different fabrics and effects to see what will work best for your project. All my very best wishes to you and thanks again for getting in touch. Christine

  • @TheWeekendArtist
    @TheWeekendArtist 2 месяца назад

    Greetings from Australia! One day you might find yourself having finished a beautiful piece of felt only to discover that some parts of it are stronger than others. Sometimes it wont be possible to mend it with wet felting. You might use needle felting or even cover it up with some other method like using lovely bits of fabric to hide a flaw.... But this time I thought it was worth trying to achieve what I wanted by determinedly repeating the process of wet felting... gently. No hot water and very gentle handwork . I hope you find this of some use.

    I really enjoyed this video. I am new to wet felting, I have done a bit of needle felting and was wondering if I could use carded wool instead of Merino rovings/tops. I Will investigate buying some rovings. I live in Queensland. To make a piece of felt the size in the video what amount of wool would I need?

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist 2 месяца назад

      Yes, absolutely. thank you very much for watching and for your questions. I am just doing a few follow up videos which I hope are also useful for you. Yes it can be much simpler to use batts as they have already been evenly carded if you purchased them as batts. Now as for how much ...I used the roving in the title picture and that was sufficient for two layers covering a piece of A3 paper. If you can get so that you pull out wisps of wool at a time you can always add more if the wool is not covering properly. It depends on whether you want a piece that is thin and flexible or something that could be strong enough for a bag. I will do another one soon and include the weight of the wool roving I used. Thanks again. I am in Perth Western Australia where we are longing for some rain. Best wishes and thanks again.

    Thanks for the recommendation to see this video. I was thinking of using Pellon Ultra Lightweight Fusible Interfacing on stretch material such as for t-shirt material so that takes away the stretch factor. Have you tried interfacing on stretch fabric?

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist 3 месяца назад

      Hi I've been thinking about this and I dont believe there is any problem. Sometimes I have used a quite bulky knit alongside a fine, thin knit. Because the squares are not very big and the final product is kept in place/alignment by the little knots, there is no problem. I wouldnt worry about the stretchiness but you could do the tshirt squares as a double, one behind the other. On thinking about my disaster one in the beginning, which is actually still being used... the mistake I made was to sew long columns of velvet between squares and then top stiched it. You'll see that I hand stitch the final binding and that is why. I dont like the look of the machine stitching. But...that is just a personal choice. So.. short answer is go ahead and mix it up should be absolutely fine. I will try to make a sample myself today. Thank you very much for getting in touch. Great to hear from you

    So many options with this technique. I'm working on cutting out 10" and 5"squares from old clothes I'm repurposing. I see from your video given the size you use, the sky's the limit on size determination. Thanks for the great color chip and numbering columns.

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist 3 месяца назад

      Thank you for commenting... so much.. If you have a look at the video with the dog in front... you will see more info about possible pattern/numbering combinations. This means that, as you say, it is possible to be really efficient with using old textiles. The only think I would be careful of , is mixing stretch and non stretch. In the beginning, a long time ago, I tried inserting columns of velvet between the knits...aghhhh. That looked awful. Mixing knits of different thicknesses is no problem at all.. just not knits and non knits. You can get away with one or two. I am just super-thrilled to get your feedback and enthusiasm. Yes these quilts are a winner. Best wishes to you and yours.

    Bubbles touching the wool?

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist 3 месяца назад

      Hi Thank you for the question. Good question. When you are starting the project it isnt a bad idea to have the smooth side of the bubble wrap against the wool. When you notice the wool is beginning to attach itself to itself...change to having the bubbles against the wool. The bubble wrap definitely speeds up the process. It is pretty much a 'try it and see' in terms of what to do. It also depends on the lightness and flexibility of the plastic bubble wrap. The really lightweight bubble wrap is possibly best but if you have a multilayered piece of strong felt already then the heavier bubble wrap could probably work really well.

    Hi I need to emphasise the key success of these balls is that the strongly felted outer surface can withstand the dog chewing. I am yet to see any evidence of dogs breaking through the outer layer that is wet felted. And , because wool is antibacterial and a wicking fibre, the balls are never mouldy, soggy or in any other way yukky to handle. Wool is amazing.

    So, if you placed two squares right next to each other, you only cut ‘one’ centre line’, as two squares will ‘share a margin’ it can make for less work and less cutting, and a more efficient use of your fabric surface area

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist 4 месяца назад

      Hi, Thank you for watching and your intriguing comment. I'm not sure that I understand. On the other hand... there are a huge amount of possibilities . So far I have just chosen to keep all the squares the same size and also tried to have this notion of a no pattern pattern which means that I get more mileage from using recycled knits. Also if I need to 'make do' with some knits, yes I would definitely cut them up so that the area of the squares match the others. I would love to hear more from you. As you have probably guessed I am not someone skilled in making patchwork. This all began when my friends didnt want to throw out some very worn but precious silk/wool knits so I made them a blanket. Thanks again Suzanne.

      @@TheWeekendArtist I have zero experience with quilting, but I make these trinket boxes. I line the boxes with felt material and so have to cut from the felt. So imagine a piece of paper, you fold in down the middle and cut on the middle line, giving you two squares. Whereas if you drew two squares with a space between each other in the middle, you would have to cut the edge of both the squares, as they would not be ‘sharing the midline. It’s just a thought cutting can be hard on the hands sometimes 😋. I absolutely love what you have done and the idea behind it too, up cycling the old sweater. Very creative!! 🤍🩵🤍🩵

      Do a little test sample. It might depend on the make up of the shampoo. Let me know how your test goes!. I'll try it too.

    That was very interesting! Could that work with a lightweight cotton instead of the silk?

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist 6 месяцев назад

      Yes, absolutely. really lightweight cottons are great. Some people use cheese cloth that is light and very open weave. Also muslin and Lawn cottons are good. if you can breathe through it and see through it, the fabric will work for nuno becuse the wool fibre scales can pierce through and lock in to the fabric. Best is natural fabric. while it is possible to use artificial fibre fabric, it can mean a lot more effort and work to get the wool to attach. Thank youfor your question and especially thankyou for watching!

      Even better with lightweight cotton , especially open weave like a medical gauze or very thin voile . If you can see through it, breathe through it, it is a good candidate for nuno felting. Beware of synthetics which can be very dense even when thin.

    Can you just paint anything you want with it?

    • @TheWeekendArtist
      @TheWeekendArtist 6 месяцев назад

      Yes you can but I do recommend doing a test piece first as a trial. And... I would also hand wash it gently . Also thoroughly mix the paint and the water /conditioner mix. Play around with it. btw I have also used this technique to paint over lettering on a t shirt. Thanks for watching!!

    what else would you like to know about nuno felting? I would love to hear from you. 😊

      You talked about under felting and then doing more. How do you know when to stop? And how do you keep the shrink even? I'm at the very beginning of my felting journey. I'm making a pair of slippers and I'm loving creating textile out of wool I found on a fence 😂.

      wow, that was a timely question... I am just in the process of making a video for beginning felters. In this video I will answer your question with the benefit of images which will hopefully make it all clearer. I would love your feedback if you get to watch it. hopefully I will be able to finish editing this week. Really good questions and yes all of these things are possible.
