LOL - Isn't telling a young LDS girl that she's going to be a mother kind of their version of a self-fulfilled prophecy? I mean, I just get that they weren't really predicting anything more than what is expected of a vast majority of LDS females. If I am stereo-typing, I apologize. But these blessings seem to be as reliable as a daily horoscope.

In Mormonism, not only do you not get paid for you're work, you get nothing but empty promises.
On top of that, YOU have to PAY TEN PERCENT to the LDS Corporate MLM!

In my blessing it said if i make art that prompts the spirit in people that i will be a successful artist, which was my dream at the time. I was really depressed and suicidal and all my art was really dark. I felt so guilty about it. I stopped drawing because i couldn’t get myself to draw something that “brought the spirit”. I mean its entirely possible for dark art to inspire the spirit in people. Some of my most powerful aspects of my testimony are how well I can see the adversary working against me. Maybe the erotic part is a bit more of an obsession/ addiction that is developed as we knock our heads against all the things we think will bring us happiness in our lives. Embrace that spiritual connection with your dark side, and make some art, that allows the Gift God Gave you to speak truth to the hearts of people who only you can understand!!

My patriarchal blessing is one of the things that pushed me out of the church. During our short meeting I answered the questions the way he wanted, not what I wanted and that is what was in my blessing. It also said I would marry who I wanted to. I thought this was the dumbest thing because of course I'm not going to marry someone that I don't want to.

When I got my blessing at 14, my parents told the patriarch that I was super into theatre and did lots of genealogy work, so anything unique or specific in it was related to that. It said that my “talents” would be used to bring the gospel to many people.
Ironically, before I began doubting the church, I had a traumatic experience in theatre that made me unable to perform without having panic attacks. Reading my patriarchal blessing and knowing that I would never live up to it made an already hard thing so much more painful, because I thought I must’ve done something terribly wrong for God not to fulfill his promise. Those “blessings” do real harm 😕

When I was in the ICU in the hospital, my TMB mother thought that reading my blessing would help "buoy me up" during that trial. I had a panic attack listening to that and the nurse even took my phone away because I was spasming so hard it was messing with the machines I was hooked up to. Needless to say, that contributed to breaking my shelf. I agree, the blessings can do some harm.

Aw, I’m sad to hear that. But I get it. I was married to a Special Forces Army man and things were not happy. And for a long time, I couldn’t read it. I’ve since mostly memorized the blessing. What I’ve realized is that all had to happen so I could become a stronger person. Mine is pretty l.o.n.g. So at the end of it, things really get wrapped in a nicer “bow’ so-to-speak. And as long as I do the “Primary Answers”-scriptures, prayers, etc., Church, I am able to feel the Savior’s love for me. But I’m thankful for the bad and crazy times, now. Haven’t always been. Best wishes.

Sometimes revelation takes time. She may go on a mission when she's older, or she could preach in the Spirit World after death. Blessings are special and they aren't fulfilled at once.

    • @scottb4509
      @scottb4509 4 года назад +8

Just as with almost all blessings they are contingent upon our faithfulness and actions. blessings can be just as prescriptive as they are descriptive. It's an encouragement to focus on certain aspects or details so that your path isn't dictated by others or by your circumstances, but rather are under your control. No one would argue that getting pregnant as an unmarried teen was a huge life altering circumstance from living in such a way that would be worthy of serving a mission. maybe the blessing was telling her to stay focused on a mission so that she wouldn't fall pregnant as a single teen mom, and she obviously didn't stay focused enough to keep her path in that direction, but was tempted by boys and her life is now altered forever. we may never know what she could have accomplished or done down that alternative path or who she would now be. There is a reason as to why they call patriarchal blessings personal scripture. it's meant to be guidance for you to listen to and follow, not unalterable prophecy.

But I hope you know by doing this you are open to the discussion now as this is a public platform. I want to point out your reasoning as its circular and leads to no truth being found, as from what I understand from what you said is that this thing can be true but only if you make it true. Its like saying, "you will be the CEO of a major company someday but only if you do the right things to become that CEO." Your premise is your conclusion and is a logical fallacy.

I was judging myself far more than anyone else was. I get that the judgy culture is very prevalent in Mormonism but I also know that we often times project our judgment of ourselves onto others, as if it was actually them judging us. I’ve definitely seen judgement though by Mormons especially when an inactive member came to church back when I was in high school. I was the only person at church to speak to him. In a little town everyone knows everything about everyone. It does seem that Mormons are less judgy outside of Utah. There really is a culture thing in Utah. But then again there’s a culture specific in the Philippines where 80% of people are catholic. There’s judgement everywhere but less I find in large cities with a huge mix of diversity.

That's why I left. I finally realized that the lesson I hadn't yet learned from all my experiences, the one that explained them all and tied them all together was one simple one: "The church leaders aren't inspired. Not even a little bit. Not at all." I even tested it out by having weekly visits with a bishop (and sometimes his counselors) where I spoke to him plainly, openly, and honestly only to be told that he wasn't convinced. So one final time, in a meeting with him and both his counselors, I stared at my shoes most the time instead of looking him in the eyes, blinked a lot, lied my ass off, and acted choked up. The 3 of them then told me how much they were overwhelmed with "The Spirit" and impressed with the breakthrough. And that was just the last of many examples in my life of their lack of inspiration or divine guidance.

Mine said if I lived worthy I'd be protected when I travel. I felt the spirit and this brings me back to the opinion I've had since I left, that the God will find you where you are. I think some patriarchs may be in tune enough to relate things they feel spiritually. Some not and a lot of it is repetition across the board. I stayed in the church so long because I felt the spirit. What I realized is my testimony was not of Joseph Smith. It was of Jesus Christ. So when my husband and I had arguments over the years when we were members of the church he would always say to me "Well.... you know we're really not even married because the names weren't right so we won't even have to get a divorce. We can just walk away!" It was a standing joke for years. Plus the guy was at least 500 years old and was swaying back and forth. My husband was afraid he was going to pitch over the altar. He didn't talk above a whisper and quite a few of my relatives came up to us afterwards and said that they could not hear anything he said. But as we all know who were married in the temple it only takes about two and a half minutes to get married anyway . Very meaningful. I think he would have been better suited to be a worker at the veil. At least if he had pitched over there there would have been plenty of people to catch him instead of just me and my husband!

There was a story of a young man who was going on his mission and wanted to get his blessing before he went out. His family wanted to read it or learn what it said and he said no and wouldn’t let them read it or tell them anything it said. He later died two weeks out on his mission and when his family got his stuff, they read that it said he would die on his mission but he would have all the blessings of exhalation. At the time I though “wow. How amazing to have that faith. I’d be terrified.” Now I both giggle at my naïveté and want to yell at that. Like, dude. Wtf.

Could be a coincidence, but based on research about near death experiences, etc. I think everyone has some capacity for spiritual inspiration whether they're in the Church or not, through connecting with other spirits. My point is the patriarch may have been inspired to say that he would die on his mission, but that doesn't mean that the Church has the priesthood! It means maybe he should have heeded the warning.

My patriarchal blessing was an emotional roller coaster for me. I think I got it when I was 19 and living in a densely populated Mormon area I was asked constantly why I didn’t have it. I was worried about what it would contain and when I got it, and whether I was ready to receive it. When I got it I was shocked. I got less than a page of blessing a total of 3 paragraphs one of which was a introduction similar to lex’s and another was the conclusion that was basically the same as lex’s with the morning of the resurrection and what not. It also included both personal, nothing about my spouse or children, callings anything. It had a short section about being part of the tribe of ephraim, them almost verbatim the per about talents and missionary work. That was it the whole thing. So I started asking around to all my friends the shortest other blessing I heard of was a page and a half, but basically everyone had 2.5 to 3 pages. Everyone else had a section about callings and marriage, it made me feel like god didn’t care about me or expected/prepared anything for me. But now I now it’s flack and it’s comforting to know that so many people have the same rehashed stuff. Thank you for coming to my TEDex-mormon talk

Mine was fairly similar to yours. I remember my patriarch sitting down to get to know me better before. I mentioned my favorite class was English and I enjoyed writing. Wouldn't you know those two things showed up in the blessing. Mine talked about my future partner, too, and it said some vague thing about "it'll take a bit before you get married... and then you will." Like you, my blessing made it sound like my only real purpose in life was to have kids. Having read my sister's blessings, a similar sentiment was in theirs, too.

Mine said I would marry a stalwart young man, and that I made promises to some people in the premortal life that I would bring them into the church. Welp, I guess I'll figure out that broken promise when I get to it. Oh it also said I would choose a profession that would help bring Jesus to people. Everything else was the same. I read my dads, it was like half a paragraph that said, "You'll have trials, don't stray from god." He left my immigrant mother with no job and 4 kids to take care of so I guess PBs all around aren't worth much to anyone.

When I met with the patriarch, he spoke with me and asked about my journey to the LDS faith. The bulk of my blessing dealt with my mother and how my spirit will lead her to the true church, by my example. Well. I no longer speak to my mother, and I am no longer a member of the church. Wikipedia says the words are: " You and each of you do covenant and promise that you will pray and never cease to pray to Almighty God to avenge the blood of the prophets upon this nation, and that you will teach the same to your children and to your children's children unto the third and fourth generation."

I believe so, but there have been later incidents of the blood Oath even up to the 20th century. They had a organization of Killers from within the church that targeted and took out who ever Joseph Smith felt was a danger to his power. even families who were considered the Gentiles that he felt were enemies of the church. They were contract killings, from being shot in the dark, or having your house and barn set on fire with people and animals still in them - usually done at night. It is downright frightning the kind of power elders welded. Members were too scared to voice any questions or opposition knowing that to do so would result in being a target for execution. The men who rode from place to place were zealots God's Avenging Angels who punished the wicked, and crack shots with a rifle. There is a great Western movie on this history , if you go to Western movies on Mormonism you will find some. It was very well done, a killer comes to the realisation, that what he is doing is wrong, is unjustified murder and the problems that caused him. Well done movie, based I think on a true story.

Great video Lex! Interestingly, I've talked to quite a few people who left the church when they were in the second half of their life (who had received patriarchal blessings as young people) and realized how totally inaccurate many were simply due to the specificity of them. For example, one acquaintance was told she would be a missionary and sent to Haiti. She was sent to France by the "inspired" leaders in the church (who obviously hadn't checked out her PB in advance). Another was told that she and her husband ("eternal companion") would be married in a temple "in the lands of Nephi within a decade." They were married in a temple in Hawaii as that is where her husband was from. (As you know, the church doesn't claim that Hawaii had ANYTHING to do with the coming forth of the Book of Mormon though they have shifted back and forth over the years as to whether the events took place in North or South America). All of these events in their lives occurred way BEFORE they left the church so the church can't claim their usual fallback position which of course is "the PB only is accurate if you stay worthy, blah blah, blah ." I can't help but believe the leaders have now given some sort of directive to patriarchs to make blessings VERY general now for these reasons. When I listened to yours I can see how generic it is.

It was just something he would do for entertainment and many of us friends of his would just have a good time. But, I tell you, some of the things he said are the same as some of the things in your patriarchal blessing -- marriage, family and spiritual purpose. Not word for word, but certainly promise to promise.
Yep. Not only is your blessing probably similar to the blessings others receive, it are even similar to card readers that don't have the faintest connection with Mormon.
Your effort to get a copy of that was worth it, even to at least this one non Mormon. Maybe others too.
Just thought you would like to know.

They are called Barnum Statements. General statements written in such a way so as to sound very specific to an individual but when examined, are very general and could apply to anyone.

I am always so surprised by how many Mormons come here (and other exmo sites) to defend the church when they are not supposed to listen to or read anti church redridoric 🤔🤔🤔 isn't that a sin??

I got my PB after I had been baptised about a year, I was a convert. I was told I was from the tribe of Dan. I used to love that I was in such a unique tribe. Now I’m like its just rubbish.

Mine talked about my gift of kindness that God gave me, that I was going to cloth children with mortal bodies (it was very wierd stated in that way), that I was going to be a leader and needed to be an influence for young women in my later years, and talked about I needed to read the scriptures to determine my vocation in life (also wierdly stated and extremely vague). Also that it was all conditional if I stayed worthy. Ours were quite similar hope this helps 🙂 thanks for your videos it really helps knowing there are people going through the same experience I am!

Ha, I had weird wording around having kids, too! It said they would “spring forth” from me. I assumed that meant I would have a quick labor or something?

Ephraim had one hell of a lineage since every white person I've ever known is told they come from the tribe of Ephraim. Every Hispanic I know comes from the tribe of Manasseh.

Mine said I would meet a special handmaiden of the Lord through a friend and marry her in the temple for all eternity. I met her at church, we married in the temple, and she left me for another man and told lies. Cool! I don't judge her but hey the Lord doesn't really tell a patriarch anything at all. God obviously has no plan for us. We plan our own life!
