It's great to see so many good answers. Honestly, I think the answer to Mormons wanting to help exmormons is exactly the same answer as exmormons wanting to help Mormons. Love them for where they are right now, respect boundaries, be an authentic friend, and just don't try to change them and expect that you never will.

Gosh that first comment is SO nice. So many times I've had people try to bear their testimonies and I have had to gently explain that in order to have a personal testimony, I cannot borrow their testimony! I'm happy they've had personal witness but my experience has been far different (and they rarely want to listen to what my experiences are, or why church culture and church doctrine hold hands.) They are going to have to trust that God knows what is in my heart.

When I left in 2005, I got a barrage of fear and accusations. I'll be in Satan's power, bound for outer darkness, my family would reject me, and the problem was the fact that I was sinning. Fortunately, I knew the cult playbook and saw through it. Fast forward to 2018 at my mother's funeral where I met a family member who was on a mission to rerecruit former members. Hmmm, so what is your approach given LDS apologetic weaknesses? Oh, we help them remember the good feelings they had in the church. Huh? Isn't that manipulative? Shrug. At the end of the day, I haven't regretted my exit from Mormonism for a second. Be aware of manipulation and you'll be fine.

I was taught that outer darkness was a place you went to completely cease to be and there was a time in my life where I would rather be there than alive. What would make me go back? I already have a list of things that would bring me back. The old history of evidence, etc is all a waste of time. But the current church has 8-9 big issues that need to change for me to going back and checking things out again. For instance one is they need to be completely transparent with money and spend way more in humanitarian aid in relation to income and investment returns. That is just one of about 8 things that I would need to see them confront. There are other things around areas like SA, LGBTQ+, church courts, etc. If those things dont change, nothing is bringing back a lot of people.

Good points and observations. Some church members are honestly so of the mindset that they must convince you to come back, you made a mistake, to ask for forgiveness etc that they do not see it only makes it more clear why you might have chose to left in the first place. Part of my reasoning for leaving the church was the blind sheep like mentality that everyone had. I honestly felt like I was in a room of zombies sometimes because something would be said and everyone is nodding along and I'd look at my wife and ask her wait did you stop for a sec to think how or if that was possible or are you agreeing because of everyone else? I think she didn't want to admit she was part of the sheep herd. Good video.

The culture shifting is definitely happening.
I'm taking an online Intro to World Religions class at my community college (a secular college), and one of the things the instructor has asked us to keep in mind is that ALL religions evolve.
Too bad the church leaders decide to claim the church doctorine doesn't change, because God doesn't change, and its God's church so it won't change. (Except it's always changing.)
It's definitely a different church today than it was when I was a youth.
But that doesn't mean they have stopped all the abuse, become transparent financially, apologized for the past, and own up to the history. Yeah, I'm not going back.

Pretty much the only ways someone can demonstrably show their life has gotten worse BECAUSE of leaving religion are either when people still in the religion choose to treat ex-beleivers worse (shunning, loss of community & relationships, etc) or lingering mental and emotional wounds from the years of land mines the religion planted under their skin. Other stuff that goes wrong is coincidental and plenty of people leaving religion have good coincidental experiences too.

I left in the late 70's. One of them even came to my house with the offer of a calling in a desperate bid to get me back and involved.--which I turned down flat. Advice to those thinking of leaving--get your ducks in line beforehand. It is much more difficult to leave when you are in a generational Mormon family and even harder if you live in the Utah/Arizona/Idaho Mormon belt. And even more difficult if your employment is tied up with a Mormon owned/influenced business. If so you will have to have the strength to start over and rebuild your life (literally) as when you drop the leaving bomb, they/them in the church will shun and reject you--even down to losing your livelihood. So if you're in this situation, line up your ducks beforehand visa-a-vie employment, housing and so forth. If this is a family decision, this should be kept absolutely secret until the last moment. A clean getaway (house sold, etc.) is best breaking away from all contacts in the Mormon church--except that is for family. Leaving Mormonism outside of the influence of the Mormon-belt is simpler task, but still it requires a clean break from Church influences. It takes time. It's hard, but shortly you will get over the overwhelming stifling influence of the LDS.

Yeah I think the bottom line is that the real problem is " Faith" Faith conditions people to believe things without evidence and that's a very bad thing. It's been said that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and that's a much better policy to guide your life. So when people are conditioned to believe things without evidence when you show them evidence, they're going to go back on their faith and and reject the evidence out of hand

Maybe the reverse psychology of trying to explain to Mormons about their own church is beginning to slowly make a difference in the way members treat ex-members.
I know I have seen a Mormon apologist go ham on someone who disagreed with their beliefs and jumped right in to bolster the person bringing attention to the truth. Usually the person is someone who is/was investigating Mormonism and realized it wasn’t what they thought. The response to their skepticism usually became an immediate straw man pull, a passive aggressive comment, or even an attempt at character assassination.
Either way, I am a firm advocate for “treat others as they treat you,” and “have a taste of your own medicine. (Which is not a good habit, 10/10 do not recommend,) sometimes flipping the script can show a person their own reflection and bring them self-awareness. For others it just angers them. Anger is sometimes a sign that something about what someone is saying actually hit a nerve, and a person who can self-reflect will do so on that.

But the husband is never going to do that after compiling amount of evidence about dishonesty of the church leaders. And is possibly might break up the marriage. Go in peace. This youtube channel name clearly includes the descriptor ex-mo, and thus, the content comes as no surprise. Furthermore, if you overlooked the ex-mo description, within a minute or less of viewing, the content theme is obvious. If you feel sad or displeased with the content, there are so many youtube channels to view, including the official youtube channel for the LDS church. Life is too short to keep viewing content that one finds distressing or displeasing, especially with so many available books, radio stations, TV stations, podcasts, video streaming services, music streaming services, magazines, social media platforms, and social media channels. The highest leaders of the LDS church have for decades been instructing LDS church members to avoid consuming media that present opinions and historical representations that differ from the official LDS church beliefs and historical representation or interpretations. The official LDS church website has an enormous approved library of talks, articles, and videos. You will find plenty of Joseph Smith is good content there at no cost to your wallet and with no distress to your mind.

@@ceciliabrown6341 Well, I went back to look it up and traveled down another rabbit hole. I happened on one short video where she was reading quotes from the male hierarchy of the church. Being told repeatedly in comments that the lds don't criticize or condemn other denominations, I assumed my friend was just a very critical and outspoken person only to me because we were close. Imagine my surprise when I heard the quotes from Ballard, McConkle, Oaks, Young and Smith, etc. And the lds are offended when we say we don't believe they're Christians. Now I no longer suffer from pangs of guilt. I can finally brush my hands off, shake the feeling that I haven't witnessed enough to lds, and get on with witnessing to those that aren't so indoctrinated in a demonic cult that leads people down a dangerous path.
Thank you for the eye opener!

It's pretty dogmatic on Mormon channels, especially defending the Mormon religion against my authentic Evangelical Christianity.
That's NOT typical of TBM Mormons i interact with on Mormon channels.
Most ExMos confuse rejecting Mormonm as the same as rejecting historical Christianity and the TWO R completely different by their incompatible theologies.
