This is perfect. The grip (IMO) is the most important part of having a straight stroke. It’s not hard to get someone’s shoulder and elbow in the correct position to shoot straight, but to help them find what’s best for them as far as the grip is concerned is tough. It took me about 8 months of straight in shots to finally find what was best for me

That last part about overanalyzing is such a good point that I was struglling of it maybe over a year now, when you suddenly start missing shots you start overthinking that there is something wrong going with your technique and you try to change it for nonsense reason. However maybe problem is not even ur technique but other things like mental or aiming system or etc. It is so nice to hear same problems from pro's like u, make me feel that I m not alone :D
Someone told me that the problem is always actually your focus on the object ball being lost while you try to fix something that works ok. That someone is right. I wish I could say I remember this 100% but I am getting better.

This was absolutely right on time👍.. I struggle with rolling my wrist during stroke and it shows up as unwanted throw on the object ball. Very aggravating to say the least. Also I can appreciate what you mean by stepping up.. I play mostly with much better players who love to teach👍. Just in the last 2 weeks I've learned to play 1pocket and straight pool... While I still suck at those games it really has improved my 9 & 10 ball play.... Seeing the table so much clearer and not selling out as much, lol! Thanks again!

You are an outstanding teacher Niels. I use a couple of grips depending on the shot. I sometimes use a slip stroke on certain drag draw shots. But great vid brother, you are the best. 🦾

Very useful tip, actually I am having this problem, but now after watching this video I think I will solve it, about copying other players style, I had copy your bridge and the way you put your arm on the the table and it works for me perfectly, I am using around 7 months and it becomes natural for me now, simply I tried hard to copy because I found it the most beautiful and solide style which match my character as well, there are many great players and you are definitely one of the best, thank Niels for all the contents

Another useful insight about overthinking your technique. I am always guilty of this which is why automatic sighting drills always help me. You know, you stand, determine your shot and just get down and make it with no pre strokes? I then always remember I am not that bad. Another one I like is forcing myself to practice with a shot clock, e.g. easier drill = 15 secs for the shot, 5 secs for a string drill shot etc. Makes pool fun again and makes me focus on essentials like position, speed and stroke length. Anyway, please keep up the great content.
Please answer this question for me at 4:17 on your video where you are extending your forearm aren’t you dropping your elbow? My stroke is kind of like yours but when I extend my forearm my wrist Twist a bit and I miss the shot and I always leave chalk marks on the felt. My grip pressure is very light and I don’t know what to do I’ll hit 4 in a row good, and the rest turn to garbage. Something is twisting a little the cue ball will veer off to the left and the object ball or vera little to the right I don’t know what I’m going to do, start drinking please help! Niels this is exactly what I'm truly struggling with. Like there are days when I don't even think about my grip and I shoot the lights out, but then on other days I get in my head and think about my grip a lot and I completely fall apart. I realize I just have to find "my" grip, unfortunately it's seems to be so hard for me to settle on a particular grip, as I constantly keep finding a different one which always feels better than the previous one. So as a result I have never really had one grip only, which I guess also leads to inconsistency - that could be my nickname - Mr Inconsistent :D

Hi Khalifa, exactly the example I mean about over analysis. There is no perfect grip. If it works and it’s smooth and loose then leave it alone and set higher targets. Otherwise you stay stuck in the never ending search 😄👍🏼💪🏼

The 2nd half of this vid is gold. That was my biggest issue for years. I wasted so many hours trying to create the perfect stroke by overanalyzing to death every micro part of technique. I have pages and pages of notes I've written from practice sessions. Instead I should have been hitting thousands of balls with various english / angles and turning off the mind. This game is chess when you're up, but once you bend over it's all muscle memory.
Agreed. I've been and still am the same. I am a perfectionist (OCD?) and have spent too much time over analysing perceived technique flaws. Most people tell me my technique is great but I always think it can be better. When I hit a wall in my practice it is usually because of this. Once I declutter and get it simple again progress continues. It is the same with drills. Over focusing on one because it is tough right now can undermine confidence. Better to have a mix of technique, small area, large position, game specific drills and not beat yourself up over one drill. Quality focus trumps practice duration every time. Now, if I am struggling with drills, I take a couple of weeks off and just play 14.1 and 9-ball 100%, then reset and start again. Much easier mentally.
I didn't think I needed to try the wrist bending because you said if you are well established and can make the shots, then you're probably fine. Let me tell you though. This instantly made me more accurate with my shots and especially helped extremely with my speed control. This is easy to do without thinking about it. I still need to challenge myself more.
I was told once its all in the hands. Is it true that there is a specific way to grip the cue for: draw, follow, center, left spin, right spin, then combining draw with left/right etc?
I’ve been working on my grip, it’s nice and relaxed but when I want to extend my forearm to get that nice follow threw and bend my wrist like you do I do it alright but my hand, or wrist will rotate a little and I miss the shot. Any ideas on how I can stop turning my hand, or wrist. I’ll say one thing when I do your forearm stroke and wrist bend I can really draw the ball! I also notice when I do the wrist bend and extend the forearm I leave chalk marks on the felt as I drive the ball back I can’t put it in the pocket like you but I can bring it back to hit the rail but I’m just sick of turning or twisting my hand just a little bit and i will miss the straight in shot it’s probably all in my head. I don’t know need help! Thank stephen

Just saw this video and trying to adjust my grip. Then heard that an established player shouldn't do it. So I am thinking if a Fargo 620 player is considered an established player. Right now the break shot and the full table length draw shot is not consistent. I realy want to improve it.

At 422 that sure is a pretty stroke! But isn’t that a little chicken wing? To me who cares it’s a beautiful stroke. Sort of reminds me of my Fred couples golf swing, just effortless.

Yes it’s almost the same. I don’t feel much difference. Maybe just enough extra pressure so the cue doesn’t slide through your hand. No more

When you do you stroke is your eyes on the cue ball or the object ball on the final stroke this has been bothering me for a while
On the object ball but I’ve also heard cue ball for some players. Most do object ball though 👍🏼😄
One thing you missed was where on the cue to place your grip. Minnisota Fats covered that in his book on how to play pool.

Not to nitpick… but your sign on the wall is integrity, not character. Integrity is doing what is right even when no when is watching.
