This is a good reminder that you can play good racks without English if you really don't need to, just good angles and stroke. I noticed this recently that I was missing out a lot on center ball hits and once I realised it my game got much much better.

I've been doing this as a warm up in my practice sessions. It has really helped a lot. After just a couple of days, I went into a match as the underdog and came out with a 4-1 win and two break and runs. Huge gains!!

Cool idea. I have a phenolic tip on my break cue. I can wipe all the chalk off and it'll have no grip. An alternative would be plastic food wrap and a rubber band (elastic).

Thanks Niels! This is the first time I’ve heard of this training tip and will be sure to incorporate it into my own routine. Up until this point, all other stroke straightening advice I’ve come across has been (like you said) just to shoot 1000 straight in shots, which gets boring real fast. Keep the good content coming brother!!

  • @masterdurick5667

I've done this before, thought for fun "what if I played with no chalk", and i did notice it makes my stroke very straight!! I spent about 45 minutes to an hour trying to record a break and run with this and got one, it was a great feeling.
I also noticed it helped my break shot out a LOT, because any off center hit I'm screwed. Afterwards, I was breaking really really well!!
Glad got see you do a video on this, it's great.

I've been kind of doing the same thing with my break stick that has a hard hard plastic tip. I think it's Bulletproof. If you don't chalk it you better hit Center. Great idea Niels. Thank you for your hard work, if I wasn't living on such a tight fixed-income I would send some cash your way. If I'm ever able and get a windfall I'll at least and u-100 or two for all the help you've given me. Hope you and family are doing well.

Just tried the tape. Too low or high and I learned real quick about the miscue limit. But, when trying to use center ball I did real well! I am definitely staying on the vertical axis. I have put a lot of time in with the "Mighty X" drill. This drill (along with my improved play) is really proving to me the value of the X!

@@devbra5585 It has been very eye opening! Every practice session since my first comment started with 30 minutes of this exercise. I became more aware of my stroke and just how sloppy it was.

Wow! Based on stop shot drills I knew i often hit right of aim point but i had no idea how badly and how often. I was ok on center hits or rolling shots with low cue speeds but medium stuns shot i was terrible. In 10 minutes of shooting i think i miscued with CB going left on all shots but two. I noticed that it was much better (but not great) when I focused on good stroke timing, that is, accelerating the cue smoothly. Thanks to this video I now have an extremely useful teaching aid to straighten out my stroke on higher cue speed shots. Thanks much!!!

When I was in college, my dorm had a beat-up pool table and one cue with no tip, just a ferrule. I got decent at using stop shots and follow for shape. I felt a little sorry for myself at the time because of the poor equipment, but it probably actually helped my game. Tape on the tip is a much more severe test, so I will have to give it a try. Thanks for the idea, Niels!

Hey Neils, great video. Keep em coming. For years , i have had an old steeplechase 1 piece cue from which i cut off the ferrule and shaped the end of the cue to a nickel radius. Whenever i need to work on my stroke , i drag that old cue out and shoot these same shots. You definitely get instant feedback if you're off center. Got this tip from troy and tammie jones. @@MagicMikeBilliards I actually did quite well with the tape on as I had already spent a few hours working on my stroke. What's nice about the tape is it forces me to take a extra second or two to really make sure the tip is where it should be prior to firing which is something I haven't been doing enough. I need that to become part of my muscle memory. I'll probably do this about twice a week for a while until it becomes natural.

Why didn't I think of this before. The very good thing about this is that you are still going to use your regular playing cue and not a substitute practice cue or shaft. Not to mention that this does not even cost a thing. When I was training to straighten my stroke, I made my extra shaft have a flat and super hard tip. The problem is that it didn't feel the same when I return playing with my regular shaft.

    • @markinjhawkland724
      @markinjhawkland724 2 года назад

This was good for me. I hope that with some work I can stop steering the cue ball. I did find that you can hit a little left or right on the cue ball just as you can low and high. But it doesn't put the spin on the cue ball that a normal chalked tip would. As a result I think some straight shots were going in the pocket when normal left or right spin would have thrown the object ball more causing a miss. So that's not great feedback. But overall I think this will help and my stroke will get straighter and more natural. I use a 12.9mm tip and I'm sure a narrower shaft would work even better. But I think it's important to practice with the shaft you play with. Thanks again Niels!!

There's a stick that I bought and I lent it out to a friend. That was my first mistake and my second mistake is I can't remember who it was. Lol. It's called the Stroke Straightner. I believe the tip is phenolic and it turned on a lathe to sort of a blunt cone shape. You absolutely have to hit it straight center CB or it's a miscue every time. Bought it from a guy down in the San Diego area. That was about 6 years ago. Sure wish I had it as it help me quite a bit like the tape on the tip like trick would do. The stick was pretty reasonably priced too.

Just a question: have you seen any problem putting the tape on the tip and then after the tape, is there any issue with leftover glue from the tape on the tip that might mess up the chalking up? By doing this type of drills, will it benefit me when i have to use spins. For example if i have to use half of tip or 1 tip of right of left english, will i be more accurate using the right amount of tip of english for the shot after doing this drill.

Never tried tape but tried playing without chalk for long periods of time & see if I could run out. I’ll try this tape thing for kicks.

How about practicing with your break cue?

Also a good idea but careful with the tip

@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Thanks for your reply Niels! (Not exactly sure what you mean about watching out for the tip).

That's the break tip is mostly a harder tip, so it plays with a different grip 👍

Hi !! I was wondering if it would cause any damage on my cue tip ?

Hi Andy. Nope. Therefore the protective tape 💪🏼💪🏼😄

Or play with phenolic break tip too?

Do you mean during this drill or all the time..?? 😁😁
I play with a phenolic tip on my jump cue. My playing cue is a Kamui Brown Soft.

@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Right what I mean is it seems a break tip playing this way would be like the tape, miscue easily unless you’re really on center ball. Thanks Niels!

Now I know how I can get an edge. My opponent has to play with tape over their tip.

I use a carbon fiber shaft like Neils and put tape over the tip like Neils but when I took the tape off it damaged the cue. I have a scrape mark that I can’t get off. People don’t follow this unless you don’t care about the shaft you are using. Do it using a wood shaft

I shot this way the whole time when I was a kid!! We didn't have any chalk and never used it. You had to hit the ball in the center or it would miscue. Oh well....
