Did you know Jared James Nichols is actually a left-handed guitar player? Ever wanted to know why he chose fingerstyle guitar playing and chose to play guitar without a plectrum? In this video, Nichols shares the genesis of his unique playing style and why he prefers the feel of the strings underneath his picking hand instead of using a plectrum!
Nichols recounts his initial struggle with the pick and why he couldn’t really connect with it. Inspired by legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan, he initially attempted to conform, using heavy picks to mimic his heroes-we even got him to use a plectrum! However, faced with a gig and no pick in hand, Nichols embraced his natural inclination towards fingerstyle playing, and the rest, as they say, is history!
This is how Jared James Nichols gets his signature sound that blends the percussive power of the thumb with the melodic agility of the fingers, allowing for a dynamic range of expressions from soft, nuanced touches to roaring, aggressive attacks that really provide a more “personal” feel and sound.
