The interesting thing with titans in titanfall is that they're generally retrofitted civilian work mechs. So the reason they have to use guns and weapons they way the do is because the don't have storage areas for the ammunition. They're basically really fancy technicals.
Didn't know that. Is there any lore on what purposes those workmechs were designed for and what purpose-built combat vehicles in that universe look like?
@@Bird_Dog00 They were used for deep-space salvage missions, construction, and underwater maintenance to name a few occupations. Mainly industrial work. The youtube channel AHOY did a breakdown of the weapons from the original titanfall game which covered a few of the guns featured here. And he explains the mechanics behind the smart pistol and how it functions. And the smart pistol uses the SMART bullets as they're called in conjunction with the laser sight under the barrel and the pilots UI in they're helmet.

Shoutout to Hyper. Freelance animator responsible for a lot of the gun/executions in this. Has a highlight real of everything he worked on on his youtube channel.
I believe, in lore, the reason the Smart Pistol is a pistol is because it was meant to be used by covert operatives. And i suppose it's easier to hide a pistol than a rifle. I heard that somewhere sometime but forgot where exactly, this may just be headcanon by someone else but i like the explanation. This stuff must be super expensive else everyone would have it, so it makes sense that it would be handed out to space-age James Bonds first and then slowly start to trickle through to the elite military units like the Pilots.
Small fun fact about titanfall 2s double take: it does, in fact, fire three rounds during gameplay. The middle shot is not rendered in gameplay, however it does sometimes appear to glitch into existence in the killcam. Side note for the game spot guys, if you go into stats and pilot weapons, you can get a close up view of the higher poly models of the first person model. If you decide to do some more of the guns.
Certain point-defense-cannons have programable burst fire modes. It could easily be a function for the predator cannon that is limited to conserve energy and ammunition, and reduce overheating and ware.
Ronin’s shotgun is based off the the titan grenade launcher in Titanfall 1 and yes you should make the martial artists watch the Titanfall grunt fights
In Titanfall 2’s Leadwall, Respawn modified the model of Titanfall 1’s Titan grenade launcher and turned it from a triple barreled grenade launcher into a shotgun 😀
To the person who got the gameplay footage, I know it's too late now, but you can look a gun model fully (without the pilot taking up space) by going into your account stats.
So the Leadwall, is i think the same or similar to the Triple threat from Titanfall 1, triple threat being a grenade launcher and the leadwall like a gauge -8 shotgun, or canister shell tank gun with what i'd assume a square cylinder. would've like to have seen coverage of more of the weapons like the Mozambique or Mastiff or some of the heavier weapons like the Thunderbolt or sidewinder. but i get you can't do all of the weapons.
Yep, that’s exactly it with the Leadwall. It’s just a reused asset from that grenade launcher. Even the aiming reticle is the same. I was looking through the comments to see if anyone did say anything about that.
generally correct, except in the campaign you do pick up any weapon on the ground as a titan too (usually from a weapon reserve pile as those are guaranteed undamaged). and worth remembering the titans were there before their weapons. on the predator cannon some folks theorized that the firing happens electrical, and the small "chargeup" time before a power shot is actually a rotation of chambering before blasting from all pipes.
In campaign, you can switch weapons as a titan. Also, Jonathan mentioned that the R series rifles should have been the SMG, but there is a smg variant of them called the R-97.
The Cold War references the G11K2. You'll notice it when you look at the magazine and see that it's chambered in 4.73x33mm caseless ammunition, and also that it's generally very blocky looking, just like the G11.
15:52 The 'smart' bit is actually the Titan Core that he has in his other hand. The lore reason why it's a pistol is that it's an emergency function for if your Titan goes down you can grab its core and the pistol from a hidden compartment and escape. Also as someone else also said it's for concealment purposes as well.
Are you claiming the titan core controls the pistols aim? Unless you have some hidden knowledge I dont, the animation with you holding the titan core in your left hand is only in the campaign.
@@rreprah9515 Yes, and the campaign is the only thing that matters when talking about lore. MP is made to be a fun PvP shooter, not lore accurate representation of the setting and its technology.

So… fun fact of Legion’s autocannon: those aren’t barrels. Those are electromagnetic rails. They rotate so that the munition pulled by them also spins. It seems like a wacky sci-fi weapon at first, but I was actually inspired by it and I’ve been working on an experimental rotary-rail cannon myself.
If I remember correctly, the Predator Cannon (space minigun) and the smart pistol are made by the same manufacturer, and the cannon has the smart technology as the pistol. Obviously, an aimbot minigun would be imbalanced, so it's limited to the titan's super, Smart core.
It's always a delight having Jonathan on the channel! He seems really passionate about what he does, and I love how he always tries to find some sort of real-life counterpart, no matter how outlandish a weapon may be!
I was literally just speedrunning Titanfall 2 while I had to urgently look up something on YT and THIS video popped on my recommended :) I'm so surprised and excited that you made a video on this masterpiece! Could you tell I love this game?
Thumb hole stocks might actually make sense in this game as it would make it easier for you to stay held on to the gun if you're a 'Pilot' constantly jumping, gliding, and wall running
I hope in part 2 you include more abilities that utilize the gun in them, like Legion's smart core. Also some things I'd like to add: The smart pistol is meant as a last resort option, and optimizing that tech to such a small extent must cost a fortune. Considering that it's also used as an espionage weapon, it kinda had to retain a small size. The leadwall was originally a grenade launcher in Titanfall 1, but repurposed/modded to shoot like a shotgun
Fun fact: it took me a while to realize this, but the lead wall is actually a carry over from Titan fall 1. I forgot the name, but it was indeed a grenade launcher that shot 3 at a time, and they bounced around for a bit, or until they hit an enemy, then exploded. The barrel would rotate when you aim down the sights, giving it a longer range, vertical volley. There was also a mod that made the grenades mines when they hit the ground. I remembered all of this from when I was like 7, playing the first Titan fall
The reason why in the campaign you can pick up other titan weapons is because BT is a vanguard class titan the only kind to be equipped with that ability, the multiplayer titans are built around their weapon for example Legion his weapon is a large minigun and because of that he's is heavily armored and has abilities built around the gun.
I love this game It is and will always be my favorite. I honestly love how scfi it is but with a lot of realism. I honestly am working on trying to bring this technology to life with the weapons and gameplay mechanics. And as a big fan of Jonathan, I really wish I could talk with him and ask him questions one firearm enthusiast to another
:') Titanfall content, yay! On a side note, I've seen comments by some players regarding the Mastiff's reload, where the shotgun holds more shells than what's visually loaded. I've also observed a "smacking" animation when reloading, where the pilot hits the side of the shotgun, then starts loading in shells from the bottom. I've heard about chamber-loading a shotgun, so could it be that, or is it an oversight of the animators?
If the animation is the same as the one in Apex, your character does load one shell directly into the chamber first before loading the tube when loading from empty.
TF|2 is an AWESOME game both singleplayer and even more so in multiplayer. There are so many elements that contribute to that awesomeness, and for me one of the top ones is the weapons. Everything about them is spectacularly well done 😎. The design, the detail, the tons of skins, and of course the absolutely INSANELY physically correct/engineered moving parts and animations all the weapons have, and that goes for the titan weapons as well. As someone who likes machines and mechanical doodads the weapons of TF|2 are a joy that I never tire of. And of course the sound design and sheer diversity of weapon types is also extremely impressive. This "Firearms Expert reacts..." series has always been fun and never more so than today when the guns of this classic and often overlooked movement shooter are being discussed. Thanks Jonathan! ☺
There is actually also a gameplay difference between the the vk-47 and v-47. The v-47 being the first one from Titanfall 2b got it's name partially because it will only recoil in a horizontal "flatline". Of course you can also say that the name is because it flatlines people but it is most likely a bit of both espeically as the way the recoil worked in Titanfall 2 did not transfer over to Apex Legends.
Also of note, I am 100% certain that the Vk-47/Flatline's top-mounted electronics/optics package was directly inspired from the futuristic 'AK-47' from the film _Elysium._ Both also extend over the Ak-style gas block at a diagonal angle to form a similar silhouette.
The pistol isn't the only "smart weapon" in the game actually. Technically the predator cannon is as well but only during the legion titan's ultimate ability so I'm not sure how Canon it is. Also I don't remember the exact line but I believe there is a line of dialouge that says the smart pistol is incredibly expensive to manufacture even by future standards
So I'm not Jonathan but I will have a go at responding to your question... bipedal mechs are impractical because: 1) They stand upright and therefore are an easier target than a normal tank - harder to get "hull down" behind a hill or whatever. A mech would have to have more of itself exposed to fire in order to shoot. 2) They would need a larger volume than a tank carrying an equivalent weapon, so you'd need more weight of armour to give equivalent protection. 3) For a given weight, feet would result in a much higher ground pressure than tracks, making them more prone to bog down in soft ground. 4) Legs would need actuators/hydraulics in the legs themselves, which would be difficult to protect properly and therefore be vulnerable. So the TLDR version is that mechs probably aren't going to replace relatively normal tanks.
@@chemistrykrang8065 Titans are more built for urban combat and maneuverability. Open air battlefields aren’t what there meant for. Not to say your points are invalid, some still stand even in proper conditions, but I think titans could still have a niche.
While it does indeed fire three projectiles, the middle one is invisible and magic so I think it's fair to consider it a two projectile weapon in lore.
My favorite aspect of the Predator Cannon power attack is that in close range mode it fires a shotgun-like blast and in long range is charges up like the Plasma Railgun in the game, both shots only use one "bullet". And also that in long range mode it doubles the ammo consumption rate for some reason, meaning you fire 2 bullets per shot so that if you have 140 rounds in close range, you only have 70 in long range.
it should have been noted that the v-47 flatline also only had horizontal recoil, similar to the vector. so one of its real-life counterparts other than the Groza would be the Chris vector as well. idk I thought of it as being cool because it's like an ak bullpup Chris vector all in one, which would be kinda of insane if ever pulled off.
which I forgot to mention but the r-101 carbine should have been the flatline because as you said it has some inspiration from the Chris vector, if it had vertical recoil it would have just made sense...
the R-series of infantry weapons made by Lastimosa Armory is a very modular weapon system. It can be adapted for different roles depending on the needs on the battlefield. R-101, and R-201 are full length assault rifles, R-101c and R-201c are Carbine versions, R-97 and R-99 are SMGs for vehicle crews, the Longbow DMR which is for Designated Marksman Roles.
What really stands out to me about the smart pistol is the decidedly not blunt end. That is to say, even when out of ammo, it is still very much capable of taking out hostiles with methods besides a hard and blunt thump. Which feels fitting for an elite pilot's last resort personal weapon that has all the very best which can't be spared for other weapons in more regular use.
Small thing I’d like to add to the smart pistol, the reason not all the guns are smart from a lore perspective would be because the guided bullets it fires are waayyy too expensive to be used like that
I'm a Legion main. And one thing I noticed is that the power shot doesn't actually shoot from every barrel at once, it actually shoots once from every barrel really really fast
I’ve always seen the power shot on legion as the minigun becoming supercharged firing a short but extremely high rate of fire burst. Almost like the idea of the metal storm concept. So it seems like a singular shot or the barrels all firing at the same time but in reality it’s just a astonishingly quick burst.
Titanfall is the prequal if you like to Apex legends, hence the weapon design continuity in the double take and triple take rifles. I cannot tell you how long I have been waiting for Jonathan to react to titanfall, this is brilliant.
The beautiful thing about Titanfall’s weapon design is that some of the guns actually look like something that future militaries would actually use. And the titans are also a great example of this, many of the things you see on them you can see on modern armoured vehicles such as tanks and IFVs, things like smoke discharges, hatches for alternative ways to exit/escape and CITVs/Cameras. In my opinion it would have been really interesting to see more variants of some of the Titan weapons, maybe a 30mm version of the XO16 chain gun reminiscent of the Russian BMP 30mm Autocannon or a fast firing variant of the tracker cannon but intead of tracking it fires 40mm sabot rounds, similar to that of the Swedish CV90.
In the lore the ammo aren’t expelled via chemical reactions but with electricity. This allows the guns to be “amped”, increasing the velocity and damage.
13:45 I could imagine a metal storm type system. It'd be a lot of work to continuously feed all barrels, so it sticks to the revolving barrel minigun setup but for the charge shot loads each barrel with a round and triggers them electrically.
One thing I would like to note about the flatline is (I don't know how, but maybe similar to the guns with weights in them) but it has effectively no vertical recoil, but more noticeable horizontal- hence the name
The mechs not having autoloaders is also kind of explained in lore:
The titans were originally built as farming equipment, and due to lack of resources to build dedicated war machines in the frontier, the existing titans were reworked to be weapons.
Like how tanks didn’t come into existence until after the invention of tread equipped tractors used for farming and logging
It wasn't built for farming at all Titans were created to help people build structures in space, after several years of war in a "desperate" attempt some pilots used those mech to fight

@@Bird_Dog00 yeah sadly it is
I believe this episode is secretly suggested by Jonathan himself as an excuse to show some big guns we rarely see in other game
@@pokvirus5705 And if it's true, I don't have a problem with it...
I seriously miss this game. Best FPS ever.
The fact that Jonathan actually played Titanfall 2 is awesome. Certified gamer
@@Bird_Dog00
They were used for deep-space salvage missions, construction, and underwater maintenance to name a few occupations. Mainly industrial work.
A Titan designed purely for combat would be the Vanguard Class. It's got the ability to pick up any weapon it pleases, and has an extremely advanced AI. As a result it needs 300% the power of a normal titan.
@@Bird_Dog00 You see them in the opening that shows before the IMC invasion they were carrying logs, cargo, and farm equipment.
@@fallongarens6734 I would love to have a mech to work on a farm with
@@fallongarens6734 "It's got the ability to pick up any weapon it pleases" They all have that ability cuz they all have hands. That's Jonathan's whole point (and the point of this comment chain).
The youtube channel AHOY did a breakdown of the weapons from the original titanfall game which covered a few of the guns featured here. And he explains the mechanics behind the smart pistol and how it functions. From memory, the round the smart pistol fires is similar in function to the EXACTO rounds used in powerful high calibre weaponry of today. And the smart pistol uses the SMART bullets as they're called in conjunction with the laser sight under the barrel and the pilots UI in they're helmet.
Ahoy my beloved
Ahoys videos have some great technical lore about Titanfall 1's weapons, they're excellent videos!
Johnathan's sheer EM2 addiction is worrying... if you've ever been to the royal armouries its pretty much everywhere on art and stuff, I have no doubt he was the one who pushed for that.
LOL
I’ve been to the royal armouries, absolutely amazing and want to go again.
I absolutely adore the gun variety in this game. You can spend so many hours on some of these, learning their ins and outs, then switch it up and have a whole different play style. Some are so unique and interesting
Shoutout to Hyper. Freelance animator responsible for a lot of the gun/executions in this. Has a highlight real of everything he worked on on his youtube channel.
softball or sidewinder would've been cool to cover
Both guns I love lol.
EPG-1 too, its very Sci-Fi… and very fun to use
I also wanted to see his response to the Mastiff, which is one of the more irksome designs.

Now do part 2! I don't really remember doing EPG, and its such a fun and quirky gun in its own right!

The predator cannon does not fire all barrels at once, it just temporarily increases the fire rate insanely high as seen in the legion trailer video
Certain point-defense-cannons have programable burst fire modes. It could easily be a function for the predator cannon that is limited to conserve energy and ammunition, and reduce overheating and ware.
Doesn't it state in the ingame description that it fires all barrels at the same time? I may be wrong but I remember it being the case
@@EE-one-Dnope it doesn't
Ronin’s shotgun is based off the the titan grenade launcher in Titanfall 1 and yes you should make the martial artists watch the Titanfall grunt fights
gotta go back and get all the weapons for another episode because man all of Titanfall 2 has so much care and love put into it's details
In Titanfall 2’s Leadwall, Respawn modified the model of Titanfall 1’s Titan grenade launcher and turned it from a triple barreled grenade launcher into a shotgun 😀
Titanfall/Apex has some of the most rad futuristic design work in gaming weapons
Like any Titanfall lover I am simultaneously in love with the product I recieved and not at all satisfied. I’d love a part 2 some day.
If i remember correctly Mozambique was covered in a Apex Vid
Yep, that’s exactly it with the Leadwall. It’s just a reused asset from that grenade launcher. Even the aiming reticle is the same. I was looking through the comments to see if anyone did say anything about that.
@@therealblackl1ster110 God i hate the triple threat grenade launcher. Takes absolutly no skill to cover 25% of the map in explosives
generally correct, except in the campaign you do pick up any weapon on the ground as a titan too (usually from a weapon reserve pile as those are guaranteed undamaged). and worth remembering the titans were there before their weapons.
on the predator cannon some folks theorized that the firing happens electrical, and the small "chargeup" time before a power shot is actually a rotation of chambering before blasting from all pipes.
@@goofy851 The Smart Pistol was in Titanfall 1 multiplayer, and Titanfall 1 multiplayer is literally canon as that's how they told the game's "campaign." So no, the targeting is not done through the Titan core. That's not even ever said in the movie, you just fan canon'd it up right now.
@@goofy851 In what world is the multiplayer not a representation of the setting and its technology? You fight in cities, industrial complexes, museums, forests, and even the simulator from the pilot gauntlet at the beginning of the campaign. Not to mention the factions being from the campaign aswell.
Also the main mode, attrition, LITERALLY has fodder units like grunts and spectres and is very clearly supposed to represent the "all-out-war" scenario presented in the campaign.
Can we show Johnathan the Volt smg? I sure it would give him the alien vibes.
This has been my favorite game series since titanfall 1s release in 2011. I'm so glad you guys did this and I'm extatic that you showed him titan weapons, which is mainly what I wanted him to see
I've been waiting so long for this video. You have no idea. Thank you so much for finally doing it! Would love to see more Titanfall.
This game is slept on soooo much! One of my all time top 10 games. Loved every bit of the game, and how fun the guns were to play with.
Also some things I'd like to add:
The smart pistol is meant as a last resort option, and optimizing that tech to such a small extent must cost a fortune.
I'd love to see him react to guns in Pavlov in psvr2 etc
The reason why in the campaign you can pick up other titan weapons is because BT is a vanguard class titan the only kind to be equipped with that ability, the multiplayer titans are built around their weapon for example Legion his weapon is a large minigun and because of that he's is heavily armored and has abilities built around the gun.
I love this game It is and will always be my favorite. I honestly love how scfi it is but with a lot of realism. I honestly am working on trying to bring this technology to life with the weapons and gameplay mechanics. And as a big fan of Jonathan, I really wish I could talk with him and ask him questions one firearm enthusiast to another
I hope we get part two eventually.
I've been watching for a while and I have been fantasizing about the Titanfall guns :) I'm so glad you guys did this
Would be down to see a follow-up video to this one
I think Mr Ferguson is a very joyful person with a naturally comforting energy. Very cool!
Fun fact, the titan shotgun was originally a grenade launcher in the first titanfall game called the triple threat
Interesting observation on the Leadwall, seeing as the design was taken from the Triple Threat grenade/mine launcher from TF1.
The EM in EM-4 stands for Electromagnetic and the 4 for its burst of 4 "grenades" iirc
I was hoping he would react to the machine pistol that fired two round burst and shunted the recoil side to side. That would have given him brain lock
Canonically the titans were industrial equipment that only relatively recently started becoming combat vehicles. Iirc
Mr. Ferguson, what's you take on Mechs generally? Are they fun? Impractical? Versatile?
So I'm not Jonathan but I will have a go at responding to your question... bipedal mechs are impractical because:
1) They stand upright and therefore are an easier target than a normal tank - harder to get "hull down" behind a hill or whatever.
Not to say your points are invalid, some still stand even in proper conditions, but I think titans could still have a niche.
for other weapons having the self-aiming capabilities of the smart pistol, legion's core ability grants the gatling gun smart bullets
Great video. But it should be pointed out that in Titanfall 2, Double Take shoots 3 projectiles instead of 2 unlike the name suggests
it used to shoot 2 on release day and it was god awful
While it does indeed fire three projectiles, the middle one is invisible and magic so I think it's fair to consider it a two projectile weapon in lore.
My favorite aspect of the Predator Cannon power attack is that in close range mode it fires a shotgun-like blast and in long range is charges up like the Plasma Railgun in the game, both shots only use one "bullet".
And also that in long range mode it doubles the ammo consumption rate for some reason, meaning you fire 2 bullets per shot so that if you have 140 rounds in close range, you only have 70 in long range.
I think we could use another dive into Payday 2 because it's just so expansive.
it should have been noted that the v-47 flatline also only had horizontal recoil, similar to the vector. so one of its real-life counterparts other than the Groza would be the Chris vector as well. idk I thought of it as being cool because it's like an ak bullpup Chris vector all in one, which would be kinda of insane if ever pulled off.
which I forgot to mention but the r-101 carbine should have been the flatline because as you said it has some inspiration from the Chris vector, if it had vertical recoil it would have just made sense...
I'd love to see his thoughts on Cod Zombies wonder weapons
the R-series of infantry weapons made by Lastimosa Armory is a very modular weapon system.
Would be interested in a video looking at the guns of the Deus Ex games, there's some interesting sci-fi designs through the series.

Yes infact, titanfall 2 is the better predecessor to apex legends, the two take place in the same universe
Well, technically Apex is a spin-off, not a successor.
@@The_Keeper. Except it basically killed off Titanfall 3, so it's arguably NOT a spinoff.
In my opinion it would have been really interesting to see more variants of some of the Titan weapons, maybe a 30mm version of the XO16 chain gun reminiscent of the Russian BMP 30mm Autocannon or a fast firing variant of the tracker cannon but intead of tracking it fires 40mm sabot rounds, similar to that of the Swedish CV90.
one of my favorite games, interesting to see the weapons analyzed by someone who knows about this stuff
7:30 The Titan fall 2 flatline has an interesting quirk where it ONLY Has a horizontal recoil while aiming down creating a “Flat Line” recoil pattern
In the lore the ammo aren’t expelled via chemical reactions but with electricity. This allows the guns to be “amped”, increasing the velocity and damage.
we have to have a part 2 with his thoughts on my baby, the R-6P Softball, super salty it's not on here
As always, Jonathan is a treasure, and so professional! Keep it up!
One cool detail is if you l at design descriptions for the pilot weapons, a majority of the weapons use the same caliber, 6.19mm.
Thank you, Jonathan. I have been waiting for this for years. Titanfall 1 and 2 and our little community deserve it.
The car reminds me of a Kriss Vector because of the mag well being slanted.
