@@Goose21 That actually is the case. Jared used to play guitar but learned bass so he could join Archspire.
Cool thing about this riff is that it's not hard to play, it's just really clever! Jared is a perfect example of "play smart, not hard". His increase in tapping on this album really compliments the rest of the music so well and allows him to play stuff that sounds really crazy but isn't too demanding for him to play! Compliments from a fellow death metal bass player dude, I'm impressed!

That's probably the sickest looking bass I've ever seen
Him: "The chord progression is really simple: it's an A minor and a G sharp diminished chord."
Me (the amateur musician): anything with a diminished chord isn't simple.

@@bobsala7780 It's really easy, because it's all the same tbh, you'll hear it everywhere in metal music. Just look it up once and you'll know everything about it lol
Take a minor chord and flatten the 5th by a half step, you have a diminished chord.
Diminished chords are way easier than they appear, for one simple reason - they're totally symmetrical so they are mega easy to learn and visualise
Plus like Brett said, any time you have a minor chord, just find the 5th degree and take it down one semitone - bob's your uncle, diminished chord!

Anybody else love the fact that death metal musicians are the standard for fun, good hearted, supportive people? Everyone else is causing riots and shooting at each other and getting into major drug problems, while bands like Archspire are doing tutorials on YT and engaging with their fans in pleasant normal ways...all while playing songs that will hit hard enough to make you crap your pants.
Also, yeah...just...super simple chord progressions faster than my eyes can register.

Question : is the whole guitar tuned down to match the drop A - or is it in standard with the dropped B ?
Drop A would be standard tuning with the other strings and bottom string tuned down a whole step. Think E standard => Drop D.
It's B standard, but with a dropped 6th string down to A
You know that meme about drawing tutorial where the guy draws a couple lines and then the next step is drawing the whole thing but it's photorealistic and it doesn't make sense because there should be 20 steps inbetween? This is exactly that but for bass playing.

I totally expected him to have a low E on his bass, just to match the guitar tuning.
a low e on a bass probably would sound like shit. muddy as hell. especially unsuitable for fast playing.
Tobi didn't have the octave lower E that Dean had because he played 7-strings for a long time until he switched to 8-string recently. Jared is the same for the bass equivalent.
I have a 6 string dingwall combustion tuned EAEADG, sounds massive.

Impressive and sounds cool, but hardest? I don't think so. It seems achievable for me(though still hard) and if I feel I can play it I doubt it's the hardest bass riff.
"feeling" you can play it and actually playing it are two completely different things. I "feel" I could win the lottery every weekend but I still have 20 quid in my pocket.
@@crazymiloyko6621 im well aware that its two different things. But there are things that I've seen that feel far more unachievable to me and thus harder. Just from randomly noodling around randomly on bass I think it's achievable if I were to practice it. I'm not saying it's easy or anything, but it just doesn't seem like the hardest.
@@adriantaylor5778 It's for sure doable. The actual mechanics and shifts aren't crazy on their own. It's the tempo that will take awhile, at least for me.
