There was a lot more that happened to Steven Page. He actually came to my university and gave a talk to the first-years. He had a lot of problems with mental illness that he was having problems dealing with. He's actually doing a lot of good what he's doing now, he very actively involved in Mental Health Awareness and that's a very noble thing.

Some people try to put other people in a box or pretend they are made of plastic. There isn't an easy solution to us we are all complex. If he is doing good and cares about what he does then no one has a justifiable reason to do anything but support him.

A bit overstated, but I feel you. If they had produced more of this sort of work as opposed to moving into commercial sound after the first two albums... perhaps went acoustic side 1 / electric side 2 or something, they might have been more recognized. I think their commercial stuff was creative, but lacked the soul this album had.

    When I was born
They looked at me and said
    What a good boy
    What a smart boy
    What a strong boy
    And when you were born
They looked at you and said
    What a good girl
    What a smart girl
    What a pretty girl
    We've got these chains
    Hanging 'round our necks
People want to strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
    Afraid of change
    Afraid of staying the same
    When temptation calls
    We just look away
This name is the hair shirt I wear
And this hair shirt is woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
    Bear with me
    Bear with me
    Bear with me
    Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
    But be with me tonight
    I go to school
    I write exams
If I pass if I fail if I drop out
    Does anyone give a damn?
    And if they do
    They'll soon forget
'Cause it won't take much for me
To show my life ain't over yet
    I wake up scared
    I wake up strange
I wake up wondering if anything in my life
    Is ever gonna change
    I wake up scared
    I wake up strange
And everything around me stays the same
It's the hair shirt I wear
And this hair shirt is woven from
It's woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
    Bear with me
    Bear with me
    Bear with me
    Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
    But be with me tonight
    I couldn't tell you
    I was wrong
Chickened out grabbed a pen and a paper
Sat down and I wrote this song
    I couldn't tell you
    That you were right
So instead I looked in the mirror
Watched TV, laid awake all night
    We've got these chains
    Hanging round our necks
People want to strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
    Afraid of change
    Afraid of staying the same
    When temptation calls, yeah
This name is the hair shirt I wear
And this hair shirt is woven from
    It's woven from
    It's woven from hair
This song is the cross that I bear
    Bear with me
    Bear with me
    Bear with me
    Be with me tonight
    And when I was born

Holy cow ... where did 36 years go? In my brain BNL is a fairly new band. I suppose this means I'm older than I think. The scene at 2:07 reminds me of my High School friend who kept me grounded when the other kids were rolling their eyes at me.

My favorite BnL song (although One Week) is catchy. Had never heard it until it was used during the closing minutes of an episode of "Homicide: Life on the Street".

That's how I found it also. Next day I went on a Homicide Usenet group and asked them to tell me what song it was. I knew it was BNL, couldn't mistake the voice, but I only knew Be my Yoko Ono and If I had a Million Dollars. This song blew me away and brought me to tears.

A hair shirt is a shirt made of rough uncomfortable cloth which some religious people used to wear to punish themselves. If you say that someone is wearing a hair shirt, you mean that they are trying to punish themselves to show they are sorry for something they have done

Just got done watching Homicide: Life On The Street, Season 4 episode 5. The premise is about a man's son who was murdered because someone mistakenly thought he was gay. The detectives inform the father as he arrives home alone Thanksgiving Day after burying his son, that the killers were caught as this song played in the background. I didn't know who sang it at first but I said, "Damn, I know that voice!" I Googled a line and it brought me here. I could've kicked myself for not realizing who it was, being a long time fan of the band.
