Kinda ironic how the janitor was a struggling actor who settled to be a janitor while the actor who played him went to do big n better things after Scrubs w/ the tv show The Middle
legit thought there was a scene afterwards where The Janitor wss basically like "you beleived what you wanted to" as a way of doing a triple joke on J.D. Maybe im remembering wrong here
I love how they did this. We didn't get to see the janitor humanized very often. I think this was important to show, like JD says, that he was just a guy who didn't get to live out his dream and it helped explain why he was the way he was. We get to see a vulnerability in the janitor that we've never seen before. Damn Scrubs was such a great show
"KImball! You tell anybody I'll kill you" I'm not quite sure why, but I find this to be a very poignant moment. A rare instance in which, all lies dropped, the Janitor let someone in on his past, on a "real" aspect of his life (and that someone was J.D. His archnemesis, of all people!).
Andrew Doehrman jd deserves it, even though he messes with him, he probably really has the most interaction with him. Maybe his closest friend. I mean who knows what's real about the Janitor. At least jd knows he's a faker in most of his personas.
Marcel Mojžíš Personally, I believe the janitor doesn't hate JD, I mean if he really hated him the he'd always do stuff like break his bike which he did after JD made him mad. But he can be friendly from time to time and he just messes with him to make his own life less boring, in the same way JD's life gets less boring when he messes with him. It's kind of an unspoken friendship that none of them wants to admit even though they both kind of know it deep inside of them. If J.D or the janitor were kicked out for a night and one of them would desperately go to the other I think they'd both let the other in. Though it's kind of purely what you believe yourself as there is no real or official answer
5 years later and you're STILL getting a reply! I love it. The Janitor, canonically, probably isn't Neil Flynn but the character of the Janitor knows JD needs to have some kind of hope or positive outlook on the situation. So he tosses him a vague bone. He doesn't necessarily confirm he was in the movie. But he teases pretty strongly that he is for JD's sake. Good writing. Great series.
I don't think he hated JD either. He realized how smart and capable he was and felt like he needed to be the "bad guy" even if for no reason to keep him humble
1:20 "I want to know what kind of freak spends all day pretending to be somebody else"🤣 Bill Lawrence and the writing team must've loved giving that line to an actor.😁 Brilliant stuff.
Dr Cox is JDs work mentor. He teaches him how to be an incredible doctor by caring. And that caring doesn't always mean emotional. The Janitor is JDs life mentor. He teaches him about hardening up for life and to be witty.
Just saw this episode in a long overdue rewatching of scrubs. I love this scene. How in the end the janitor admits something he clearly wanted to keep a secret because he couldn't stand JD thinking about him that way.
Scrubs was amazing at this. Cox, Kelso, the Janitor, they all started out as one dimensional sitcom tropes then the writers found some brilliant way to give them tonnes of depth.
If J.D. had watched for him in the credits all he would have seen was that the Janitor was acting under the alias of "Neil Flynn." Still wouldn't necessarily be his actual name, because he could have just lied to the producers, or asked for a pseudonym.
To be honest, I dont know how anyone could have looked at the ridiculous things he’s done over the years and NOT immediately assume he was a theater kid
I always liked some of the little details in the scenes, like at the start of the last scene where the Janitor is having a little exchange of smiles and fun with the nurse. Sometimes i forget that the main enemy he has is JD, while he is mostly friendly with the other people, especially with the nurses and other non doctors like Ted.
Maybe I should have said "The Janitor lets JD in on the truth of what he has said about his past. Since the Janitor is a compulsive liar, JD has come to assume that everything he says is a lie. Therefore, when he can tell that the Janitor is being genuinely honest, he realizes that this custodian is, for once, being, at the very least, civil towards him.
I kind of wish the Janitor revealed himself to be Neil Flynn at the end. And then he quit, assumed a new name and went to work on whatever sitcom he's working on now.
The amount of respect Janitor has to let JD in on his secret is proof that deep down, he has a sense of respect for JD. There are many other moments where JD and Janitor had gotten along and were friendly towards each other. While I wish we’d gotten more in that aspect, something is better then nothing.
I like this with the janitor, I'm a bit kooky too and it is fun to play around with accents and characters, i don't do it to this level but it is fun to play around and be someone else ya know (i did high school theatre, i have my small youtube) i probably won't hit the big time but i can have fun with it whenever i want

@@carlyedwards1422 he certainly respects JD as a doctor. There was a moment when JD saw Janitor's penis in an accident and thought it was some kind of rush. Janitor went to get checked to JD and listened to the diagnosis
There is one miss out by screenwriter, later JD trying to get his real name, which he can see on credits after "The Fugitive" So the real name of Janitor is Neil Flynn :P
@spartan117xz Yep. Neill Flynn (Janitor) had a role as a transit cop in The Fugitive. A small role, but the Scrubs producers implemented it nonetheless (which was a good idea in my opinion :D).
Fun fact, the original plan was the janitor was supposed to be a figment of JD's imagination(that's why for the first few episodes he only directly interacts with JD) but the writing/directing team quickly saw so much potential in the character they just made him part of the real world of the show. I love how most the time he still kind of has the vibe of an imaginary friend, makes scenes where he's being real(the end of this scene) feel so much more impactful.

Yup. For them to not call Janitor Neil Flynn now would be bad for scrubs. Its amazing how they told us his name but we all put that aside. Simply amazing.
If I were Dr. Dorian, I would never have made the connection, Flynn doesn't look the same as he does all those years later, their voices don't even sound the same. It is a fun piece of trivia though.
I guess it's different when the guy is basically your co-worker. You just pick up the little things that you do when you interact with people in real life. I think it's fair to assume that JD would have noticed something familiar, and you'll notice he doesn't seem to recognize the Janitor right away until a few seconds in. It's plausible.
Tfw JD could have found out the Janitor’s name by checking the credits at the end of the Fugitive Wait does this mean the Janitor’s name is actually Neil Flynn???
Scrubs shows you how to do a meta joke right.
Love how they actually took something Neil Flynn was in and used it as a means of character development.
@2dowde like The Simpsons til like s 13 etc best writers like conan o brian were there for the best writing/funniest series' of simpsons imo!
It humanizes the Janitor's character. It makes us realize that he's a guy who really wanted to live a dream and that dream was just out of reach.
