Rural Internet Tradeoffs

  • My ongoing struggles for a reasonable Internet deal. HughesNet has improved but is at the ~$100 max I'm willing to pay and still has a few slow spots on prime evenings and will always have a long delay, typically 2/3 of a second to a full second of latency. This is due to the distance of the geostationary satellite orbit. Cellular Internet has its own set of complexities and limitations as does Starlink.

Thank you for explaining the rural complexities with internet. I can only follow a part of it because I do not understand much about routers, equipment, packages and speeds, etc.. but I liked hearing how you are troubleshooting the difficulties. Love the t-shirt!!!

What you need is a directional antenna for your celluar link, & a higher mast to mount it since it appears you have a lot of trees around your property that will attenuate (decrease) the signal. It looks like your using a cellar booster, which isn't ideal for Internet services. better option is to mount an external router antenna on the mast, or use an outdoor rated router that is mounted on the mast. or use an outdoor equipment box to mount the router to protect it from the weather.

You should take the no promises trial Starlink. I did and am very happy I did. Yes they had my $100 for a year or so. Then said we can give you effectively the RV version with lower expectations and upgrade you later - good people. Trust them

I am fortunate that the cell tower is very close. I am surprised that you can't get a Verizon phone, have you tried going to a bigger city to get a phone?

Even if I am able to get T-Mobile's 5G, I won't get the speeds my city friend with Verizons Home Internet gets as I'll be connecting (at this distance in the woods) via a ~600MHz carrier, but would still see an improvement as 5G has more advanced compression and error correction algorithms. I might get maybe a seventh of the 250M he gets but that would still be a massive improvement.

Dang bud....you sure like to complicate things. I had all the same options and issues that you do, completely fixed the day Starlink was set up. I dont even think about it anymore.

This morning my cellular internet is giving a 55ms. ping, 2.2M d/l, but 0.04Mbps upload speed. Even typing is very delayed. This won't do.
