Great video. Been watching your videos for some time now and after watching this, I went out and bought the 14k rated version for my Grand Design Reflection 312bhts. Without this hitch, towing it home from the dealer with my RAM 2500 (not dually) was not very pleasent. This is not a light trailer. But I could not be happier with how the hitch performed on the first trip out with our new RV. We ran into winds and rain towing it over bridges in St Petersburg FL and the trailer was stable the whole way. Correct setup is essential. Take the time to get it right. Just read and follow the manual and the hitch will serve you well.

For pull trailers, I believe the best hitch is the Hensley Arrow (remanufactured is $2200, zero interest) For our 40’ Weekend Warrior triple axle 5th toyhauler, we used one with the rails under the bed, don’t recall ghe hitch brand, but it was awesome.

I have a Anderson hitch and use a 2500 Ram with the 6.7 to haul a 25 ft car hauler with 7 ft side walls. Now some folks have said that anti sway and weight distribution isn't needed for that set up but when filled with cargo the tongue weight is often over the rated capacity and total trailer weight has been north of the 10k max limit. Driving 500 mile trips between Tennessee and Ohio the hills and cross winds were quite noticeable before adding the hitch. I am done with moving and will be selling the cargo trailer and will be buying a TT in the 25 to 30 ft and believe the Anderson will again work quite well for this setup as I don't believe the TT will be North of 12 to 13 k. If I had a 1/2 ton truck weight distribution would be a bigger issue but with the Anderson hitch and brakes adjusted I hardly noticed the trailer back there. All in the cargo trailer length with a extra long tongue so I don't bash corners when turning the trailer is 28.5 ft also I flipped the axels to stop dragging so it is quite the sail back there.

Just had one installed on our 2016 GMC Yukon Denali by our local RV dealership. They had some issues, since our GMC Yukon came with auto level and I pointed out to the install tech, that the owners manual had a warning note about the proper installation and use of sway control. Will post video on our channel soon. Note to 2016 GMC Yukon owners be sure to read the owners manual when using this product. It's a great system. However, after watching this video I need to go back and double check they installed it correctly with the spacers. Another great video BTBRV. Thanks for posting.

The Equalizer hitch was one of the first things of many that I bought when I was new to RVing about 10 years ago. I landed on it through some research and of course a few RUclips videos. I think I got lucky. It's not always easy to pick up the right tool for the job the first time but all in all I think I did. Being new to the towing a large box with all your stuff in it down the road at highway speeds in all kinds of weather and traffic. I couldn't be happier, I tell everyone I know. Great product. This hitch is the best I have used so far. I was unaware of the price of this hitch and since the dealer said it was included he went ahead and set it up for me. @@EqualizerHitch Quick question. I just had my Equalizer hitch installed and this is my first TT. When driving I feel a noticeable change in the front end of my truck. It feels much looser than without the trailer. It almost feels like a very slight sway in the front end. I know I am well within my tonque weight limits and I also know that the before and after the load measurements on the front wheel wells was only a 1/4" change. So, is this slight bit of front end sway normal, or could I make a adjustment in my equalizer set up to eliminate this or reduce ? Thanks

    • @EqualizerHitch
      @EqualizerHitch 5 лет назад +5

@@RMM09 When you're towing a travel trailer, you may notice several different changes in the way the tow vehicle feels. You are describing one of them, which is usually associated with having less weight on the front axle, combined with the additional weight and leverage of the trailer. This is frequently described as a "floaty" feeling, like you're wandering down the highway instead of being solidly connected to the road.
Another feeling is that of being "pushed" to the side. This usually happens when you have a good, solid setup on your sway control hitch, and you pass a semi-truck, or are hit by a gust of wind. The feeling is that both tow vehicle and trailer are pushed sideways a bit, but do not move independently of each other. The worst feeling of course is sway. This is an out of control slalom from side to side, where the weight of the trailer is pushing the tow vehicle wildly from side to side.
You will always notice a difference in the way the handling feels when you're towing a trailer. That is something that takes time to get used to. However, you should be able to make adjustments to your Equal-i-zer hitch so that this is minimal, and still gives you the feeling of being in control of your vehicle. Follow the set up process in the Equal-i-zer owner's manual ( eqhit.ch/manuals
), trying to get the front end back to 100% of the baseline axle weight, i.e. if you weigh your tow vehicle without the trailer and the front axle is sitting at 2,500 lb, try to get it back to this same load with the trailer coupled and the Equal-i-zer hitch engaged. If you do this and are still uncomfortable with the ride, please get in touch with our customer support team so they can help you. They can be reached at 800-478-2245 or support@equalizerhitch.com.
Also, don't forget the other elements of stable towing: properly rated tow vehicle, no equipment ratings exceeded, good tires properly inflated, correctly loaded trailer, reasonable speed, etc.

  • @ABNChief915E

You are correct on almost all of your assessment in regards to The Equalizer hitch. The part where you came off from the reality of The Equalizer hitch, is where you showed the friction point up at the bar receivers on the hitch. That is an area that according to equalizer must be lubricated with silicone spray every single time the hitch is used and therefore is not a friction point. It is a point of support and for weight distribution but not friction. The only points of friction are on the L brackets with the stabilizer bars. One other point that you made that is crystal clear and needs to be driven home is that when people have problems with The Equalizer hitch, it is almost always because they failed to hook it up correctly or failed to adjust it properly, it is not a problem of the hitch.

I towed my 2000 KZ Sportsmen for 20 years with an Equilizer. I'm a Utah boy and I love that they are made just down the road from me. HOWEVER, when I sold my low center of gravity Sportsmen and bought a new taller (more sail area) Cruiser MPG my truck was getting thrown around quite a bit (F250). White knuckling was ruining the experience, I literally didn't want to go anywhere and was scared to death when ever I saw a big Semi overtaking me. I ended up just going all in on a ProPride. As good as the Equilizer is, there really isn't any comparison. Totally different experience, but also $3500 bucks.

I have this style hitch for my 22' travel trailer. I used it with my Chevy Silverado K1500 and it worked flawlessly, then kept it when I upgraded to a GMC K2500HD with a diesel. I added the sway bracket jackets and they helped with the popping noises the campground residents enjoy when I slowly pull in. At least a 60-70% reduction in noise. Also grease the ball and joints in ONLY the proper locations. Clean and grease again between trips depending on milage and weather. See EQ's site for the grease location info.

Great video! Saw one thing in your video that is a definite safety concern and I hope you fixed it. The break away cable for the brakes is looped through the hook that clips to the hitch mount... The cable should be attached separately through the same hoop on the truck that the safety chain attaches to otherwise if the trailer ever came off that cable is never gonna apply the brakes cause it never actually draws tight being on the chain hook.

I did quite a bit of research before I purchased mine but the dealer who installed it never did Equalizer and had an attitude. Left the washers out and some small things. Had them come back to the site and fix it. I just purchased a 2019 Silverado and had to adjust the height and the washers. Got it back to within a 1/4" of the unhooked wheel well height and it pulls great again. Might play with it and try 1 more washer but by the way the trailer and truck felt I'm back to where my old setup was. Nice hitch with no sway.

I was towing with a Reese Dual Cam that is a much better hitch than the EQ! The DC will try and return the trailer to center where as the EQ will want to hold it where it’s at. Also the EQ cannot work as advertised because for the pivot points to offer any sway control the trailer would have to be way out of line and by that point it’s too late for it to do any type of control. Just watch when you turn slightly, the pivot points at the hitch will not move. The only 2 points that would offer any sway control are at the L brackets. And again those are flat surfaces that downy offer much.

It's time for you to review the Hensley hitch. You've been looking for an opportunity to collaborate with the KYD folks, so here's your chance. Marc hasn't really done an in-depth review on theirs yet, and doing detailed mechanical truck/trailer reviews isn't really his strong suit. I'd be interested to get your opinion on whether the Hensley would allow someone with a half-ton truck to tow a slightly heavier or longer trailer than you've typically recommended in the past. Yes, it's expensive, but maybe it could be bought with the savings one could get from buying a comparably-trimmed F-150 versus an F-250, for example. If the Hensley completely eliminates sway on an 8,000 lb., 32-foot long TT towed by a max-tow F-150, why shouldn't someone opt for that setup and have a more comfortable truck to drive when not towing?

I love my Equal-i-zer hitch. But when I had the dealership where I bought my trailer install it, THEY installed it wrong. I have a top of frame coupler on my trailer (like 90%+ of trailers out there) and they installed the hangers the L-brackets sit on upside down. I had virtually no equalization. Only found out later when I was going to torque the bolts before a trip. I saw another trailer with it the same way, not surprised when the trailer had the same dealer sticker.
Lesson learned, always read the manual, and double check the dealers work.

Nice vid. You might want to tell your brother 2 things: 1. He needs to cross the safety chains; 2. (More importantly) the breakaway cable should be attached to the TRUCK, not the chain. It is meant to brake the trailer itself if the trailer is ever disengaged from the truck (like in the case of an accident). If the cable is attached to the chain, which is also attached to the trailer, it is useless.

Question: on the boondocking channels I've seen trouble when the trailer is pulled through a steep v-shaped "ditch" - it pops out the "hitch connector thingy",and that's without a distribution hitch. "360" hitches are advertised for this. But when it comes to distribution hitches, aren't you Very Restricted as to how deep a Ditch you can drive across? Don't you have to be very careful and limited about the quality of roads you drive on? I shudder to think about what would happen to a weight distribution hitch if you drove over a deep ditch.

    One observation, one question.
Observation; Back in the 90s Ram trucks did a recall on their factory hitches that were rusting and cracking. A quick inspection revealed mine was cracking and was replaced. Since then I made it a point to provide a “Non-Hitch” connection point for my break away cable. I attached a clip point to the truck body for the breakaway connection. Your brother’s cable connection point could be ineffective should something on the hitch or chain hook fail.
Question; On a previous video you reviewed air bags on an SUV. I used Firestone Ride Rites on my old 2008 Ram Cummins 2500, since I was towing a 10K GVWR travel trailer and hauling a golf cart in the bed of the truck. Worked well and still had significant load on the equalizer bars as indicated by the slight curve. Now for the question, for those who use both, I’ve heard that using air bags can reduce the effectiveness of the weight distribution system if relied upon to level the tow vehicle too much. This would reduce the amount of weight redistributed to the front axle. How would one decide/calculate/know what balance between the two systems is correct? For me it wasn’t too difficult to figure out since I towed the trailer for years before loading the cart. Just used the bags to level after the cart was added using my usual hitch set up.
(edit for clarity; I installed the bags when I decided to haul the cart, towed without them before that.)
Enjoy your videos, keep up the great work.
    MM
