I like this method of deciphering keyways. I carry a ring with one of each of the common keyways and that way I don't have to carry a blank book around with me. #lockboss
I don’t even want to admit to how much time I’ve spent trying to discern between a J and K keyway from an odd angle picture of the keyway. Glad to know I’m not the only one! #LockBoss
It appears the chart showed the same name for both of the "finalists" for the second SFIC core 1A1E1... was one of them supposed to be a EE? Great helpful video nonetheless, PJ! #AccessLockKeyLLC #HaulinBrass #LockBoss
Thanks for the tips. I wish there was an app that took a picture of the keyway and deciphered it for you. That would be a worthwhile application of all the tech in our phones. #Lockboss
Another GREAT VIDEO for the beginning #LockBoss that is not as experienced at looking at Keyways and finding the correct key for them. The Key Books are crucial in finding these, a MUST HAVE. Thank You once again PJ.
Thank you for the helpful video I look at the shapes on the side like you mentioned example for Weiser from the bottom you have a square right side close to the bottom and left side you have a equilateral triangle
That's a much better explanation than how I was taught. I'm definitely downloading the document for this to keep when I start hiring newbies LoL. #LockBoss
Have you ever been 😂 short little blooper at the end hahaha Connor snuck that in!!! Yes!!!! I had that same problem not to long ago and your team helped pin point CSA123! Thanks Kylie your a #lockboss helper! 🤘🏼Great video brother🤙🙏
Very in-depth explanation! I was thrown in to the Ilco book and told to identify keys. Baptism by fire! Luckily I’m a visual person. This would have been helpful a couple of years ago before I had to figure it out on my own, now I’m the key guru #lockboss
Definitely some good tips here that I think boil down to figuring out which features of the keyway are the prominent/important ones and which ones are common to several choices. I'd argue some of the hardest to ID are some of the mulitplexed Corbin, Russwin, and Corbin Russwin keyways. Like, good luck with the 8 somehow-not-identical keyways in the H-Class! A tip I'd add if you don't have the cylinder at your counter (or even if you do): Take a couple of really clear photos that you can zoom in on, and use that to really look at those little wards and grooves as you compare to the book or image. Otherwise, a jeweler's loupe and good lighting will help with the smaller details. For instance, I just had to ID one of Russwin's N-class keyways. There are 28 choices, with 14 of them obverse and the other 14 the reverse of those. They all have the same basic configuration of wards and grooves (unlike Best that can be categorized into the three categories of this video). Once I worked out that it was one of the reversed variety (so 15-28), what finally got me to the answer was the two tiniest wards (one on either side) at the mid-point. From keyway to keyway their location relative to each other and the direction they "point" up or down changes. I did end up having to take photos and zoom despite the cylinder being in my hand so I could make out which way those wards "pointed". (it was N17, btw.)
I got a digital copy of the Ilco catalog and have used it plenty of times! While the printed copy would be great, the digital has served me well. Thanks for the great video PJ!! #lockboss stuff there!
Great show PJ, can apply this to so many sectional keyways. Older days so many less varieties, now using your lesson and the Ilco book for all the newer sectional blanks you can readily identify your keyway/keyblank.#Lockboss
Once again thank you for the great videos #lockboss. Last night was the first live i have missed seinc you been doing the live giveaway.... I was busy getting the #lockboss stock car ready for 3 nights of racing this week
Excellent video, i never really looked at it that way. But with the Christmas tree idea, tripped my imagination on how to look at the other half of the keyway. Sort of speak. Thanks again #lockboss
I like your process to determine the key way. I'll definitely remember that one and as always love the bloopers. "have you ever been standing?" Made me laugh #lockboss
Thanks for the tip. You know you are into locks when you catch yourself looking at doors and trying to guess keyways while walking around on a daily basis. #Lockboss
Finally I have gotten a #LOCKBOSS instructions on how to decipher, blankity-blank, key blanks! Also since I'm so new at this, where can I get a key catalouge so that I can learn more than just the KW1 that I'm using now.
As facility maintenance and me still learning soooo much and teaching the other guys what I learn this make soo much sense and very helpful thank u very much #lockboss
Ok, so the picture isn't exactly super clear and the angles may be off, but you say at about 10:28 that the keyway is a 1A1D1.... From what I can see in the picture of the plug, it looks a lot more like a 1A1G1. There's a 90 degree that doesn't appear to exist in the other four 'major angle' examples.
Got a chart for padlocks? I'm just a hobbyist who is fascinated by mechanisms, and I'm trying to work out the keyways in my small collection, mainly to order Lishi tools. I was most disappointed when I bought the M1/M2 one and discovered it only fits Master No. 3 keyways, which don't exactly need it. None of my other Master locks have M1/M2 keyways, not to mention the other brands.
this is off topic I know, but I was shopping for lishi 2 in ones and wanted a professional opinion. Is there a difference between original and genuine lishi tools that justifies the huge price difference? the only thing I saw was that the genuines could be off by up to one half when measuring pin depths and it might make cutting keys that fit more difficult.
I have an old Corbin lock that looks like it should take a CO7 bu t it doesn't. The key fits in a C07 lock but it is higher up the tree. The key is marked 101EN. It's an Osco key. I have studied the Crorbin manual and know that the key system is a bit like mastering, where one key can fit all other key ways. Wish to heck I could identify the blank. I'm probably going to figure out how to replace the cylinder so I can make dupes.
Pro tips! And a cheat sheet to go along with it. The Ilco key blank directory is definitely a plus for all #lockboss es. Bloopers 😄. 🇺🇸 #clksupplies 🇺🇸

As one of the basic beginner lessons, every potential locksmith should learn about identifying keys. Great explanation PJ. #lockboss
I love it. You have hit it out of the ballpark again with your Christmas tree idea thanks.

Figuring out what lock I'm looking at is my hardest challenge. Thank you for the tips

9:50 I don't get why this is not 1A1G1. Starting from the bottom left of the G1, you go straight up, and then and almost 90 degree right turn.
How can i get that book your using?
Great video! It's tough to tell some of these keyways apart. Very good identification tips though, and the PDF cheat sheet is handy. Thanks! #Lockboss
Thanks!-PJ

I've found poking the key into a small wad of clay to be a decent way to get an image of the cylinder for comparison with the book. #LockBoss

Go Original Lishi, they are the best and support Mr Lishi himself-PJ

Good thing the PDF is free, isn't the paper copy out of print? #lockboss
I wonder what it would take for a #lockboss to make a computer program that can ID a key blank to match the keyway for it.
Good thoughts!-PJ
Great info my friend. #Lockboss
