  • Technique Tuesday: Singing with your period - Using your cramps as a locus for support.
This week I’m continuing to throw out some of the tools and tips that I have found helpful when singing on my period. I hope this might prove useful to you as a singer, teacher, coach, etc!
Many people who have a menstrual cycle will experience cramping before/during their period and at other times in their cycle (often around ovulation).
Although it seems counter-intuitive, aiming for where you feel the cramping can be an incredible tool for accessing low support.
It’s kind of like aiming for congestion when you have a stuffy nose or sinuses to have immediate physical feedback of where you feel resonance in your face.
Not only that, but the activity and activation of the muscles in that area can actually warm and soothe the muscle tissue and fascia which will ease, slow, or even stop the cramping.
If you struggle activating by aiming for the pain because your body naturally wants to protect an area in struggle, you can use
    - a pelvic tuck
    - squats
    - lift your leg
    - or squeeze a cushion, exercise ball, or pilates circle between your thighs to engage the muscles.
What are your favorite tools for singing on your period?
