I feel like the ‘dead/missing parent’ trope is because for many of these movies the girls were too young to really have a romantic plotline, so that was given to their single parent instead (because of course, you can’t have a movie without a romantic plotline). That or to make it easier to escape parental supervision.
Actually they said it was following the formula of having a dead parent in Full House, as their first movie was written by the Full House creator, they at times continued the story line in their movies. Just like with their show Two of a Kind had a dead parent, it too was produced/created by Full House crew members.
@@mistymitchell2790 That's really interesting! Crazy how much Full House influenced their entire careers considering how young they were when they were on it.
Very similar to how the Hollywood industry treated Shirley Temple, always using her as an orphan or small child of a widowed parent, to lure the next single adult in the plot to fall in love with her current parent/guardian.
2:48 they said in an interview that whenever they sat down with a movie production team they would ask them, “Who’s the girly girl and who’s the tomboy?” And reluctantly Mary-Kate (I believe) said, “I guess I’m more of a tomboy…” and Ashley said, “I guess I’m more girly…” and that’s it. That’s how they were written for every movie. But they were only given those choices because in the 90s you were either or girly girl or tomboy in media lol

I recognized Alison in the airport in Nassau and she could not believe a (at the time) 16 year old watched her show and knew who she was. When I was younger I visited Nassau (in the Bahamas) and went to the local cultural centre/museum, and the guy working there actually played the police chief in Holiday in the Sun. I had never heard of the movie (or any of the Olsen twins' movies) but I watched it after meeting him and it soon became one of my favourite comfort/cringe watch movies. Formative experience to say the least
There are two different types of girls/fans when it comes to Jared Padelicki: Sam from Supernatural or Dean from Gilmore Girls (which is ironic because his screen brother and alternate deuteroganist in Supernatural is also named Dean.) Also, I will add: first sponsorship link I ever clicked on. I need new bras, so I bought new bras. 5 of them, in fact. For $88. Thank, Ash.
when you showed the editing for Holiday in the Sun, i immediately had to check to see if the director had started in music videos and he apparently is best known for his work on live concert recordings, so that explains everything to me lmao
As a hardcore Italian fan, I remember growing up thinking their teen movies existed in some sort of multiverse, because they all have the same title - the format was "Two twins in [insert city/country]" or "Two twins [activity]". But it surely made it easier to remember the content lol
‘Holiday in the Sun’ was like my addiction, but it left me feeling really down about my body, hair, and style, wishing I could look like Megan Fox or the girls from Play. I felt so ugly in comparison. And ‘Passport to Paris’? I absolutely adored it. It had me dreaming about finding a guy who'd be that sweet to me. My mom must’ve seen me watch these movies at least 100 times each. It makes me want to travel back in time and give my younger self a huge hug.
When I was a kid my great aunt got us Mary Kate & Ashley VHS tapes, which we were not allowed to watch because they were a ✨bad influence✨. Excited to see what I was missing lol

This video made me realize that I've seen It Takes Two, but it merged with the Parent Trap in my head (two movies i haven't thought about since they came out) and now I know it's 2 movies. Wild
Winning London was my obsession as a kid I just remember watching that movie daily for at least 6 months as an adult I have never rewatched it as I am sure it won't hold up but I remember being so invested in ir
“Bike boy” in New York Minute is Riley Smith who, coincidentally, also played a character name Dean in another movie (Motocrossed) and plays in the (unfortunately now cancelled) show Nancy Drew. He was one of my teen crushes 😂
Kind of surprised that Holiday in the Sun is so high on your list as I remember it was one of my friends' least favorites, but I loved that one so much! Happy to see this 90 minute commercial for Atlantis finally get some respect! Side comment: I think it made me and everyone I know want to go there, so clearly it still did its job.
the adventures of Mary Kate & Ashley were poetic cinema. my favs from memory were 'the mystery of thorne mansion', 'the great fun house mystery', & 'the shark encounter. I remember the fun house one giving me actual nightmares. if you make a separate video just on those I will be eternally greatful.
The only thing I remember at all from Getting There is "why do they call you Toast?" Well toast gets burned alot" 😂 that will never not be funny. But my fav of the older years was winning London. " They're called tea sandwiches. More like teeny weeny sandwiches" 😂😂😂
I only strongly remember It Takes Two, though I know I watched most of these. My mom HATED the identical strangers plot, I bet she would bring up how unrealistic it was if I asked her today 😂
The intro song to Holiday in Sun is Island in the Sun by Weezer and when I finally figured that out I never forgot it. Pre-Shazam world music searching is a core memory.
I was absolutely jumpscared at 45:53 - I am friendly with Curtis Andersen as of a few years ago and I never noticed just HOW much stuff he is in from my childhood. He doesn't really act anymore but I keep seeing his face in EVERYTHING. The only thing I knew of before meeting him was Sabrina the Teenage Witch, in which he is only in the first season I believe. But recently I saw him pop up in Gilmore Girls, my FAVORITE show, as the prosecutor on Rory's case. It's sort of that phenomenon of when you get a certain type of car, you start noticing it everywhere lol. Also, his accent is so... interesting lol. I'm tempted to ask what the instructions were for it.
winning london and passport to paris is probably only in my top 5 for nostalgia reasons but i have a really hard time with plot-to-montage ratio, and holiday in the sun was such a disappointment when i was a kid, i remember feeling like “okay but where is the rest of the movie” thank you so much for this video
I've never had so many core memories unlocked in a single hour and a half session before. I watched so many of these movies dozens of times and my entire family had to put up with it. This was fantastic, thank you.
So I’ve never actually seen To Grandmother’s House We Go, I just vaguely remember seeing commercials for it but all I could recall was the girls riding the carriage. So this whole time I thought it was just a cute movie about twin girls riding a horse drawn carriage through the magical Christmas forest to their grandma’s house. I was obviously mistaken.

Eugene Levy saying “I need to commandeer this veHICle” as he steals that RV from the couple in New York minute is seared into my brain.
these movies were my whole childhood - i have a twinsister so we were absolutely obsessed with the olsen twins
There are two different types of girls/fans when it comes to Jared Padelicki: Sam from Supernatural or Dean from Gilmore Girls (which is ironic because his screen brother and alternate deuteroganist in Supernatural is also named Dean.)
Also, I will add: first sponsorship link I ever clicked on. I need new bras, so I bought new bras. 5 of them, in fact. For $88. Thank, Ash.
I couldn't stop laughing during that part, like that's the wrong brother 😂
@@mrh8142 Same! "and then Dean" Uh, you mean Sam. "from Gilmore Girls." Oh. Sorry. Continue.
I’ve been WAITING FOR YEARS for a good RUclipsr to do this and i couldn’t be happier it’s u! Yaaaas I can’t wait to watch this later!!! 💖💖💖
when you showed the editing for Holiday in the Sun, i immediately had to check to see if the director had started in music videos and he apparently is best known for his work on live concert recordings, so that explains everything to me lmao
does it?? I need to sit this man down
As a hardcore Italian fan, I remember growing up thinking their teen movies existed in some sort of multiverse, because they all have the same title - the format was "Two twins in [insert city/country]" or "Two twins [activity]". But it surely made it easier to remember the content lol
At first I was like "omg I didn't know Italy had a fanbase like that" lmfao
So you’re telling me that Mary Kate and Ashley have other movies than the critically acclaimed movie A New York Minute?! Crazy
as someone who LIVED for these movies as a child I was convinced half of them were a fever dream how have tou activated the Mary-Kater and Ashley sleeper agent who was slumbering in my brain
“New York Minute” “The Challenge” “Our Lips Are Sealed” & “Passport To Paris” r my absolute favorites of their movies
The way that Passport to Paris still has me in a chokehold at the tender age of 31 😂
Friend, same, but Winning London for me lololololol. "Britain does not negotiate with terrorists"‽ What kind of diplomacy is that‽ But also, if I ever get to go clubbing in the UK, I hope one of the clubs plays that song from the movie lololololol.
It’s crazy to think there was a time where these twins ruled the freaking world.
I clicked immediately just for your thoughts on The Challenge, the best of all their movies, and I was NOT disappointed
I had to buy the dvd and a dvd player for the challenge. worth it.
@@ashleynorton your own personal Challenge if you will
I could never roast something as precious, something as superlative, something as awesome as the Mary-Kate & Ashley franchise. Those girls rule!
omg i remember watching these movies as a kid and mary-kate and ashley looked so much like my cousin i was convinced it was actually her
40:48 I immediately recognised the "creepy twins" as the same ones from the A Series of Unfortunate Events TV show!
Same here, they used to live near me in Vancouver and I met them a number of times. I was surprised to see them young (er)!
Passport to Paris & New York Minute are my FAVORITE Mary-Kate & Ashley movies! I am so happy that you are covering the MKAOCU❤
This video made me realize that I've seen It Takes Two, but it merged with the Parent Trap in my head (two movies i haven't thought about since they came out) and now I know it's 2 movies. Wild
Double Double Toil and Trouble is my #1 MK&A movie. I’ll never forget the scene of the lady coloring in her gray hair with black mascara
Winning London was my obsession as a kid I just remember watching that movie daily for at least 6 months as an adult I have never rewatched it as I am sure it won't hold up but I remember being so invested in ir
49:56 god I love the 90’s!! Filmmakers just don’t have the courage to take artistic risks like this anymore!!! 💀💀💀
“Bike boy” in New York Minute is Riley Smith who, coincidentally, also played a character name Dean in another movie (Motocrossed) and plays in the (unfortunately now cancelled) show Nancy Drew. He was one of my teen crushes 😂
While biking in Vancouver, my brother and I saw him & recognized him as the guy who always played the hot guy on Disney channel lol
Thank god you posted this just in time for me to play it during my daily workout!
When I was 7 years old (c. 2000) I once ordered frog legs because they were served it in Passport to Paris and I always wanted to try it!
I’m 34 and I’m not exaggerating when I say my family still quotes It Takes Two on the daily. Parent trap who?? 😂
Same and same!! All the time!! 😂😂😂
I quote it all the time too! My kids just don't get it. Lol
You untapped some deeply buried childhood memories. I didn't realize how many Mary Kate and Ashley movies I had seen.
I know Jared Padelecki from supernatural so hearing you call him Dean was so funny 😂
I will never not love the poster of How the West Was Fun , the struggled expressions are everything to me.
How does Ashley always know exactly what I need when I need it? Getting a little creepy, but I’m fine with it
Kind of surprised that Holiday in the Sun is so high on your list as I remember it was one of my friends' least favorites, but I loved that one so much! Happy to see this 90 minute commercial for Atlantis finally get some respect! Side comment: I think it made me and everyone I know want to go there, so clearly it still did its job.
My first thought was “Sam Winchester from Supernatural” so when you said Dean, I was like “wrong brother”
Jensen Ackles needs to play a Sam in order to even things out.
the adventures of Mary Kate & Ashley were poetic cinema.
my favs from memory were 'the mystery of thorne mansion', 'the great fun house mystery', & 'the shark encounter.
I remember the fun house one giving me actual nightmares.
if you make a separate video just on those I will be eternally greatful.
I LOVED THESE MOVIES AS A KID!! What a fun idea for a video omg
the Michael cera clip sent me 💀
Thank you so much for noticing "Champlain," I rewatched Holiday in the Sun with my friend a while back and could not let it go
The only thing I remember at all from Getting There is "why do they call you Toast?" Well toast gets burned alot" 😂 that will never not be funny.
@sweb23879 Is that one that ripped off "The Parent Trap" (1961)?🤣
The intro song to Holiday in Sun is Island in the Sun by Weezer and when I finally figured that out I never forgot it. Pre-Shazam world music searching is a core memory.
I knew Island in the Sun from the movie Aquamarine!!
Omg the cute british boy at 44:58 is the guy who played Dr. Chase on House!
I received the movie “the challenge” for Christmas when I was 12 and I still have it on dvd.
I loved MK&A so much!
1:01:30 It Takes Two was most likely a crossover between ‘The Prince and a Pauper’ and ‘Parent Trap’
Loved this! Extra fun fact: bike guy in New York minute also was in DCOM Motorcrossed so not his first time biking like that on screen!
i’ve been waiting for this video my whole life and i just discovered you this week. legend???
winning london and passport to paris is probably only in my top 5 for nostalgia reasons
but i have a really hard time with plot-to-montage ratio, and holiday in the sun was such a disappointment when i was a kid, i remember feeling like “okay but where is the rest of the movie”
thank you so much for this video
I've never had so many core memories unlocked in a single hour and a half session before. I watched so many of these movies dozens of times and my entire family had to put up with it. This was fantastic, thank you.
So I’ve never actually seen To Grandmother’s House We Go, I just vaguely remember seeing commercials for it but all I could recall was the girls riding the carriage. So this whole time I thought it was just a cute movie about twin girls riding a horse drawn carriage through the magical Christmas forest to their grandma’s house. I was obviously mistaken.
Lmao same here!
all I'm gonna say is if you aren't listening to the "they thought I was you" podcast and you're a marykate and ashley fan you totally should! Its 2 friends who are superfans and are going back througb all their whole timeline and even get to interview people who worked closely with them and other superfans. They also are trying to uncover the behind the scenes like their relationship with their parents and manager and whether they even wanted to do this. 2nd showing and gimme pizza are also good ones! Derricks doll collection has some good info as well💖
You are amazing for posting this comment!!! Thank you so much I had no idea and now I have hours upon hours to listen and enjoy the deep dive of MK and Ashley universe. I subscribed to the podcast immediately ❤ You rock!
@@PrestonVincent no problem!! I’m a huge Marykate and Ashley fan, I’m actually a member of the the they thought I was you Patreon and they have zoom calls sometimes where you can talk to other MKA fans! They even hosted a zoom birthday party in celebration of MKA’s most recent birthday and I (and other fans)got to be featured on the pod, wishing MKA a happy birthday
I love talking about MaryKate and Ashley if you ever want to chat, lmk!
I am SO GLAD you brought up the "Nobody Tells the President What to Do" song. My dad LOVED that song.
I think the whole Eugene Levy driving the RV sequence in New York Minute (with the Midwesterners) is a pretty direct reference to a great movie Best In Show but maybe I'm looking too much for something in nothing. Loved the Gene Parmesan referencing with no explanation.
Holiday in the Sun was my absolute favourite I can’t count how many times I’ve seen it
Holiday in the sun and New York minute were movies that practically broke my dvd player from watching them so much😭😭 rewatching them now is hilarious🤣
You always hit me in the soft nostalgia place 🥹
Thank you, this made my day, I used to have a dvd with all of their movies, would rewatch them all the time
Omg yes. I did this binge watch the month after I finished university when I wasn't ready to start job searching yet. Tried to start a blog and everything. Begged a podcaster to send me their files of all of Two of a Kind and watched the whole thing thanks to their generosity. Glorious time.
You need to rank Mary Kate and Ashley tv shows like two of a kind and so little time
Very much enjoyed watching this video! I'm 6 months younger than Mary Kate and Ashley so i grew up with them. Every year for Christmas we got the VHS tale of whatever new movie they had made that year. They were always so ridiculous but fun all at the same time.
1:09:05 I laughed so hard at the chase scene from Holiday in the Sun 😂. I have NEVER seen the movie (go figure) but gosh what in the chase scene of all "chase scenes to ever exist" was that??? And the random shots of black children??? What in the worl- my stomach hurts so much lmao 😂
I started this thinking "there is no way this is going to be as entertaining as watching one of those movies myself" and I was a damned fool. You're hilarious.
i am so happy this video was recommended to me. i am named mary kate and i have always been asked: "where's ashley?" i think i found her!!!!
i laughed a lot in this video but i’m dying at “he eat chip and lie” about the dog 😭😭😭
The second you showed the shot of the older twins from How the West Was Fun, I knew who it was -- that's Jacqueline and Joyce Robbins, they're in Series of Unforunate Events!
As a '90s kid full on obsessed with these twins, it's actually bonkers that Bart in how the west was fun was a psychopath even as a kid because he TRIED TO BURN IT DOWN???
YOU ARE SO GOOD AT THIS!! on the way to 1m foreal
In Billboard Dad one of them says she uses a whisk instead of a fork to scramble the eggs because a fork bruises the eggs and other twin responds with "Next you'll be worried about hurting their feelings"
I think about that every single time I scramble eggs.
this is a video I didn't know I needed. I remember that I watched a LOT of mary kate & ashley movies growing up, but I had absolutely zero recollection of them until watching this.
I’ve been waiting with baited breath for you to upload. Tonight is my night.
I just found your RUclips channel today and I am so glad I did, I’m at home sick from work and yesterday I slept most of the day because I was bored out of mind, today your videos are the only thing keeping me entertained. I agree with most if not all of your opinions, I like the style of content you produce, and I like the way you go about certain topics (don’t even get me started on the length of your videos god bless you 😩) thank you for blessing my RUclips feed with your content 💕
"It Takes Two" is more of a modern, very loose interpretation of "The Prince and the Pauper," not a reinvention of "The Parent Trap". 😊
I watched this entire video very surprised I wasn't more familiar with any of these! I only really remember New York Minute well. However I was obsessed with their TV series So Little Time and still know all the words to the theme song.
Occasionally, I think to myself "what about the ashley and mary kate movies" and this is the universe answering.
completely lost it at the "nooooooo" shot that goes into one twin's mouth and out the other????? who in their right mind thought of that 😭
A genius obviously lol
