Don’t listen to the ones saying this song is about marijuana. Peter, Paul, and Mary was a traditional folk harmony group. This was THE children’s song for a generation and still makes us cry when we hear it. I’d say the ending is more wistful as you age and it never loses a tinge of sadness
I still cry at the ending too!!!
Peter Yarrow (the singer who wrote it) once said it was only about growing up and he should know because he was Puff's "father." Love me some PP&M!
Bullshit. It was totally about weed. Jackie Paper ffs? You are from the same moronic school as the Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds idiots who believed John's story about Julian's picture.
Amen, brothers and sisters.
Perfectly stated 👏👏👏 ♥️
Now you gotta check out the wonderful harmonies of Peter, Paul and Mary. "Blowing in the wind", "Leaving on a jet plane", "500 miles", "I dig rock and roll music"
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and "Stewball" are 2 more of their great songs.
All of these are fire!
I grew up believing it was about marijuana and rolling papers … that is what most of the kids believed too! However it was a fun song and we all loved it!
@@avidrdr5640 Yes, but Stewball was a racehorse ;-)
Along the lines of coming of age songs, they also sang "Lemon Tree" which is a beautiful song about not judging someone or something by it's appearance. An absolute must listen in the PPM song book.
My final comment about those great people - we took our children to a concert by them (I am 78) and the usher told my 6 yr old where to go if he wanted their autograph. They each stopped and chatted with everyone, signed all the autographs and my little boy told Peter they did not sing his favorite song .That was about a racehorse named Stewball. That lovely man stood in the alley behind the theater and sang the whole song for my child. The opposite song from them is El Salvador. It is gut wrenching but beautiful.
Stewball was one of my favorite songs growing up. I loved listening to them singing. I would have loved seeing them live
Yes, Stewball needs to get on your list os songs to react to!
oh my heart! what a lovely little story - thank you for sharing :')
Thank you for sharing
I loved Stewball
So many people have tried to turn it into what it is not. It is exactly what Amber described it to be. I can't count how many magic dragons I grew out of. Every now and then the echoes of their roars fills my memories.
Thank you! Get so sick and tired of the "Oh, it was the 60's therefore it was obviously about drugs, why else would it have a fantasy creature called 'Puff'..." bullshit. Anyone with a modicum of brainpower can tell it's a story of how we are not "little boys" - or little anythings - forever and we grow up and our painted wings and giants rings "make way for other toys".
Now THIS is folk music! Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers. You may be interested to know that their only #1 song was "Leaving on a Jet Plane" written by John Denver himself! Some of their other notable songs include "Blowin' in the Wind" (a hippie anthem), "If I Had a Hammer", and "Lemon Tree". This song sounds very much like a children's story - I remember when I was a kid, they actually made a cartoon based on the song. Peter and Paul are still with us, Mary sadly passed in 2009..
Nope, Cass Elliot wrote Leaving On a Jet Plane
@@gailbug - LOL, nah. It was John Denver
@@tonyh9875 Yup, John. I first saw them in concert around '65-66 ay Carter Barron Amphitheatre in DC.
@@fordp69 - We must be just about as ... errr... young, then 🙂 I was a very young kid in high school when the folk wave just swept through. Lots of us quickly learned to play guitar badly, and sing probably worse. But there was some great music throughout that era.
I'd guess that the person who thinks Mama Cass wrote the song is mixed up because A&J reacted to Cass and John Denver doing a duet of the song only a couple of days ago:
ruclips.net/video/CNLOPuZYcGM/видео.html
@@tonyh9875 Yes, in the video, Cass joked about having written the song. The crowd chuckled but G Rector got fooled. I had a friend who told the story of going to a Peter, Paul & Mary concert in Denver in the mid-sixties. They sang Leaving on a Jet Plane, then said the writer of the song was in the audience. When they asked him to take a bow, the guy sitting next to my friend stood up. It was John Denver. who at that time my friend had never heard of.
I was a little kid when my mom learned how to play the guitar, and she'd sing me this song along with other Peter, Paul & Mary songs like 500 miles, If I had a Hammer, Cruel War, and Blowin' in the Wind. She passed away this year, but before she did, I got to sit down with my guitar this time and play her the very same songs from almost 60 years earlier. Despite not having much of a voice, or memory, she was able to recall every line as we sang them together. It was as beautiful a moment as I could have asked for, and I wouldn't trade that memory for anything. Thanks for listening and reacting.
How beautiful! That brought tears… may her spirit journey be swift and true.❤️
Thank you for sharing that lovely story.
My mom also played the guitar and sang many of those same songs. She also sang the one about the Titanic going down..."mothers and wives, little children lost their lives, it was sad when that great ship went down"
What a great tribute to your mum. Tears here!
500 miles,Leavin on a Jet Plane,Blowin in the Wind!!! If you want to explore folk music they’re a good start!!!!
Everyone gets emotional when they hear Puff the Magic Dragon. I cry every time I hear this. Every. Single. Time. Like right now.
You aren't alone in that.
It was a song about children growing up, their innocence and imagination; done wonderfully by Peter, Paul and Mary who were folk singers back in the day.
😂
I was subjected to this crap when I was a little kid in the late 60s, and I believed it was a cute song about a magical dragon. Later on, I realized that it was about promoting cannabis use, and that Peter, Paul and Mary were commies.
I was 4 years old when this started playing on the radio in '62. Peter Yarrow once said he always wanted1 song for kids on every album. Another favorite of mine at the time was Autumn to May.
The music of Peter, Paul, and Mary should come with a warning label that listening to them may be habit forming. Many have mentioned “If I Had A Hammer”, “Blowin’ In The Wind”, “Cruel War” - you could listen for hours and scratch only the surface. I would add “Where Have All The Flowers Gone”, but I’ll warn you- it may make you cry (it does me every time). Very powerful messages in all of these without a lot of overdone production. How you react to them will tell you more about yourself than the music itself. “The Marvelous Toy” is something fun to help balance things. Thanks for choosing this one. Merry Christmas!
Yes, I thought of The Marvelous Toy as a Christmas suggestion.
Yes to “Where have all the flowers gone” and “Blowin’ in the Wind”
I’ve heard this song ever since I was a kid., and I STILL cry every, every, EVERY TIME I hear it.
Every time, too! Bagpuss does me, as well!
@@andrewhunter6708 Aww! Me too. My children asked me what I watched on TV as a child so I bought them DVDs of the entire series of Bagpuss and The Clangers. They LOVED them! I've often wondered why and I think it's because children's TV then was about telling stories, not special effects or catchy music. I actually prefer the Seekers versions of Puff the Magic Dragon (ruclips.net/video/Tud5RmC_zxY/видео.html ) but both versions are cute and sad 😭. There is also this cartoon (ruclips.net/video/0FyhTBvLu4w/видео.html ).
Those of use who are old enough have gone thru the theme of the song a number of times.... our own childhood, raising our children and experiencing them going thru the phases of life, and now our grandchildren. Puff never wins in the end, unfortunately. And the song remains bittersweet in our ears.
i won a talent contest, aged 10, in '66, at a holiday camp, singing this. it brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. thanks so much for playing this.
“San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)” by Scott Mckenzie…Amber you have got to listen to this hippie anthem!
Absolutely. It tells the way we all felt in those days.Best of times
Jay might like to check out Massachusetts from The Bee Gees in 1967 they’re answer to this song
@@elizabethfranco1284 And so they can finally listen to a Robin vocally led song ❤️
@@pattyestrada6 and that they were more to them than the disco era
Agree on "Where have all the flowers gone" especially from their 25th anniversary concert because you get to hear each voice alone as well as together. Also would suggest "The Marvelous Toy" and "Right Field" to share with your kids.
I wish more people were familiar with the Kingston Trio's 1961 original recording of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone". I love their harmonies and think they did such a wonderful rendition of it! P.S. "The Marvelous Toy" is also a great suggestion!
Haven't heard this for years but surprisingly it still brought tears to my eyes just as it did when I was a kid and it would play on the radio. I always felt so sad for Puff.
Me too. Teary eyed right now. I want to find him and introduce him to another little guy.
If you don’t shed a tear to this song, you’re dead inside…
@@anthonysardone723 I agree Anthony.
Yes, Puff is an all time favorite. It was the1960s and we were filled with ideals of love, peace, end all wars, flower power. The civil rights and women's rights movements were a natural extension of this time. It was an innocent time so songs like Puff expressed our feelings.
Definitely something kids would love. Peter, Paul & Mary are considered a Folk Group. I know I loved it when I was a kid. "IF I HAD A HAMMER" is one of their classic songs.
Peter Paul and Mary’s version of Dylan’s Blowing In the Wind is iconic. They are pure folksingers.
Some people thought it was about drugs. It wasn’t.
It reminds me of Toy Story.
Me too.
This song is 100% about drugs. "Puff" the magic dragon. Lol Jackie Paper, Strings, and Sealing Wax. Billowed Sails. This has to be a joke there is no chance you think this song is not about drugs.
As Peter would always say, unequivocally, when asked, "This is NOT a song about drugs, this is a song about a dragon!"
@@Charzar816 Not even anything to do with drugs. I lived through the whole time period and this was just a childrens song.
Peter, Paul & Mary's "If I Had a Hammer" is a fun one to listen to
you guys, this was my very 1st favorite song!My mother took us kids to a record store and we each got an album. This is what I chose. Peter, Paul & Mary! My little brother got Lady and the Tramp, thinking it was a disney type style. It was not. He was so mad. He took my record and threw it in the slew! My mother took me and got me a replacement. Great memory. The 60's & 70's were the best time to grow up! Being a teenager during the 70's, was such a blessing.
Love this trio. They were an American folk group formed in New York City in 1961. "Puff, the Magic Dragon" was released in 1963. Despite rumors that the song refers to drugs, it is actually about the lost innocence of childhood. They had a lot of great hits such as "Lemon Tree", "500 Miles", "If I Had A Hammer", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Day Is Done". They recorded quite a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "When The Ship Comes In".
I have a friend who married a woman who's son died during her previous marriage. She used to always play this song for him. My friend said that he could never play it when she was present as it was too painful and brought back memories. I have sometimes thought how hard it would be for her to remember the lines, "A dragon lives forever but not so little boys". There is a lot of pain out there and we need to be sensitive to others needs and love them.
Simon and Garfunkel were around earlier (Hey, Schoolgirl 1957) as teenagers, but had no presence until Sounds of Silence(1965). Peter, Paul and Mary had their first big hit with "Lemon Tree" (1963), and retained popularity with numerous social commentary songs about civil rights. It was their versions of Bob Dylan's songs that gave Bob the publicity to finally be accepted by a national audience. In the early 60s a battle raged between the purist Folk crowd and the Rock n Rollers. The harmonies and "natural" sound of the acoustic guitar were pitted against the noise and "artificiality" of the electric guitar. The Cold War, the use of drugs, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War needed something louder.
I saw Peter and Paul back in September. They are both 84 and still touring. It was a great concert. Everyone in the theater sing-along. They were lively and funny and still got it! Just wish Mary was still with us
This is a piece of my childhood.
This song was banned on many radio stations when it came out. The imaginations of the critics went wild and they thought every word was code for some other drug activity. The artists themselves explained that the song was simply about the loss of innocence and imagination when children grow up. It didn't take much for a song to get banned from the BBC in England, and most stations States side wasn't much better. You should check out 500 Miles, or Lemon Tree. Any song they perform is excellent.
My husband and I both grew up in Chicago and we never knew that in some cities this song had been banned for content, all crazy!! We were pretty shocked and after awhile we laughed are butts off!
The first record I ever owned was a 45 with this songs backed with "Blowin' in the Wind." My mom gave it to me for xmas when I was 7. I still get chills when I hear "Blowin' in the Wind."
When I saw their concert in 1964, they said they were going to sing a song by someone we'd be hearing more from - Bob Dylan. There was only a smattering of applause by those who had heard of him then. Fabulous concert, of course!!!
Ooh I've just commented on the same thing. This was my first record too...back in 1976.
i had this song, back in the days of vinyl, lol, so quite some years ago i was little girl, and every time i played this song i would cry - i think my mother threw it away , because i always cried until i sobbed.. i had forgotten until now! thanks for reaction.. you two are the most authentic, respectful, and perceptive listeners doing reations... appreciate how much time you are investing for all your listeners!
This brings back so many memories and tugs hard on my heart strings- I grew up with a sister who brutally bullied me. She’s eight years old or really disliked me from the day I was born and made fun of me for everything and she used to make fun of me for crying when I heard this song when I was a little girl very young and my sweet father used to say you know what kiddo it makes me cry too and I’m a grown man and he would sing it with me and let me sit on his lap, and if I cried, he would comfort me and protect me from her so this really is emotional for me, but it’s a beautiful song. It’s lovely reminds me so much of my childhood I was born in 1963 the year it was released. I love you guys. I love your channel. I have so many suggestions. I love your reactions. I’m glad I found you guys✌️❤️
Yes it's about loss of innocence in children and them growing up not drugs as some say. The writers said from beginning about children growing up and Amber you totally got it. It is a sad song but it's reality in life.
TRUE that
Noel Paul Stuckey wrote "The wedding song" for his friend Peter Yarrow's wedding. The royalties of this song go directly to a trust fund called Public Domain and the monies are distributed to individuals and organizations throughout the world. This song has been used in many weddings, and has been recorded by a number of other artists over the years.
And it's very, very pretty.
We played it at our wedding 43years ago. It is still one of my favorites.
Peter, Paul and Mary were genuine folkies out of the Greenwich Village scene of the early 60s. Some record exec hooked them up with each other and voila.
Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary is also the guy who wrote the Wedding Song (actual name is 'There is Love' but everyone knows it as the Wedding Song). For a long time you couldn't go to a wedding that didn't play it at some point. I've had the joy of going to several of their concerts, they strongly encouraged everyone to sing along to everything. Including dividing the audience up in groups and singing in rounds. It really was the first concert I've ever gone to with audience participation. Edited for a bunch of typos - I should not attempt to type on Christmas Eve.
The Wedding song was played at our wedding 48 yrs ago!!!!
They borrowed the audience participation gesture from their old friend and mentor Pete Seeger.
When I was a kid back in the 70's, we had an old album of children singing classic kids songs. Puff The Magic Dragon was the featured song on the album cover. So many of those great old songs that generations grew up singing sadly seem to be lost to today's kids.
Just off the top of my head, other songs I remember from the album - On Top of Spaghetti, Little White Duck, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Chim Chim Cher-ee, This Old Man. ...You know, I think we had more fun singing along with a few vinyl records on my little portable record player than we ever could've with today's high-tech stuff. I sure miss the good ol' days. 🙃
Don't forget the TV Special too! I still have the book from it that I got at a school book drive!
Was this the “Peter, Paul, and Mommy” album? It has an orange jacket and had two boys and one girl on the cover - probably each about 8 years old. I vaguely remember it, which is surprising considering I used to play it so often.
@@scottNNJ, no it was the Richard Wolfe Children's Chorus - they did multiple albums of kids' music back then.
Wow, I haven't thought about Little White Duck in years and years!
Peter, Paul and Mary is a deep well of great music. I would suggest "If I had a Hammer." for a listen.
As a kid in the 80s this was my favorite song. I didn't have access to a lot of music, but I had a tape given by my uncle with Peter Paul and Mary on one side and Simon & Garfunkel on the other. Brings back memories.
Peter Paul and Mary's Leaving on a Jet Plane is fantastic
The studio version of LEAVING ON A JET PLANE by Peter Paul and Mary will show you their voices and then you will know why.
Yes Amber, time goes by fast, and the older you get the faster it goes, and when you get to be my age , your memories become even more precious and thanks to great reaction channels like yours, we get to be young again for a few minutes and hear the great songs of our youth again for the first time through you guys. it is a very hard to articulate pleasure.
Peter, Paul and Mary were an American folk music group which spanned 2-3 decades, beginning in the 1960s.They were also very much into social and political comment and action eg. the civil rights movement, anti Vietnam war, the troubles in El Salvador, anti discrimination of various kinds and promoters of the New Age/Era philosophy of love and peace. They even showed that they were capable of performing rock music with their tongue-in-cheek song, "I Dig Rock And Roll Music". I went to two of their concerts. They were a powerful, harmonious, energetic and charismatic group. Their first record album was the first I bought, plus a number more along with their CDs. My grandson and I would often listen to, sing along to, and read the children's book and CD of "Puff, The Magic Dragon". Their music encouraged me to be a better person and to believe in doing the right things for the greater good of the world.
I've had the pleasure of meeting Peter Yarrow and he is extraordinarily kind. A genuine human being. He used to play at the Kerrville Folk Festival every year and would always stay at the Inn of the Hills where I worked. On my first introduction, I told him that my Mother had a massive crush on him. When he saw me again speaking with someone in the lobby, he made a beeline for me. He instinctively knew I was speaking to my Mother. He just strolled up, introduced himself, had a lovely chat with us, and placed a kiss on her cheek before he left the lobby. My Mother was on cloud nine. He came every year that I worked there and every year, he said hello and asked me how my Mother doing. I LOVE him.
Mary Travers really had an astounding voice that this song doesn't necessarily showcase. PP&M's song the Cruel War is one that really lets Mary's voice standout.
I loved Cruel War…it does makes me cry…tho it reminds me of the civil war…not Vietnam war…
Depending on the song, Peter and Mary took turns singing the middle on three part harmonies because they both sang in the same tenor range. Paul was a baritone.
My dad bought me one of her solo albums when I was a kid. Wish I still had it!
Agree, the audience singing along hid Mary’s awesome voice. This trio is TOPS.
One of my absolute favorite songs when I was a child in the early 1960s.
My father was a true bluegrass and country fan - and everytime i would go into the back living room (if he was home) they were on. Think he seen every show they've ever done. Thank you for taking me back to him (passed 2013)
Oh my! I haven't thought of this wonderful song for years. Please notice that the whole audience knew the words. This wasn't a setup for the program. I think everyone in my generation knew this song by heart.
Thank you for the great reaction.
Peter, Paul & Mary were considered Folk Singer. They also sing Leaving on Jet Plane which John Denver wrote.
Where Have All the Flowers Gone. PP&M were the best folk singers of the 60's. If I Had a Hammer is also really good. The lyrics to their songs had messages of change, peace and spoke to an entire generation. I used to play this for my kids at bedtime.
Pure folk music. That's Peter, Paul and Mary.
This is probably the only "children's" song that adults loved. It was very popular and of course audiences always joined in to sing the chorus. It sure does get you in the feels... you don't even have to have children to feel sad for Puff, that mighty magic dragon, when he sheds a tear and sadly slips into his cave.
I grew up with this song, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. They are amazing artists.
There was a movie that came out in 2003 called A Mighty Wind that was a parody of folk music. It is very funny, and the music is great.
This song never ceases to make me cry! It's very moving to watch them singing this as older folks too; a few years before Mary passed away
Peter, Paul and Mary, Where have all the flowers gone!!!! its my favorite from them
Peter, Paul and Mary sang If I Had A Hammer at Doctor King's 1965 March on Washington. It's on youtube.
Peter, Paul and Mary were awesome. Their harmonies are perfection.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this but there was another (optional) verse written.
... "His head was bent in sorrow; green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave
CHORUS
(new optional last verse)
One fine day it happened, Puff woke from a dream
He thought he heard a familiar voice and Jackie’s laugh it seemed
He looked around his cavern and over by the door
Stood a little boy with a piece of string and smile he’d seen before
“Hello My name is Billy, my dad told me your name
He said I’d find you in the cave along the cherry lane“
Puff, that mighty dragon smiled in his joy
He’d never be alone again for this was Jackie’s boy
CHORUS"
I never heard that before, it's lovely and finishes it so well! Thank you!
Wow, thank you.
Thank you for the optional verse. It makes the song easier to listen to and "un-breaks" my heart.
I only know the old version, my age I guess, 61.
We were always glad to see puff up in the sky. We knew we were safe again. This is from the Nam.
Peter Paul and Mary are one of the truly Great American folk singers. I enjoy watching you react because you have expectations of something happening and then it doesn't. I think so often it is true of all of us that we look at something without knowing what we are looking at and we come to a decision about it be a good or bad. It is a lot of fun for watching people as they take in something brand new and their eyes are opened.
This makes me cry every time. Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff.
Me too. I'm crying right now...50 some odd years later.😁
I'm not crying, you're crying...;) This song still touches my heart and as a grandpa, had me welling up again. Thanks for the memories.
Having attended a couple of PP&M’s concerts back in the day, I can speak to the inspirational nature of this group. They sang us through the March on Washington and the Vietnam anti war movement to name just a couple! Peter’s ‘Day Is Done’ in concert was a spiritual experience. Peter’s song ‘River of Jordan’ made famous in the movie ‘Airplane’ is also an exercise in reflecting on a spiritual journey ‘when I looked in the eyes of the cold and the hungry, I saw I was looking at me’!
I used to cry every time I heard this when I was little (I'm showing my age here lol) I thought listening to it now would be a breeze but here I am crying my eyes out and reminiscing about those golden days 🦖
Me too.
Laugh at me if you will, but this song always makes me cry. Poor Puff. Lol
I cry, too.
I am 48 years old and heard this song hundreds of times...I have never been able to make it through without crying.
No one will laugh at you, Ruth. I cry too and I'm 69 years old. It is a very sentimental song.
When this song came out, I was about 8 yrs old. This was the first song I remembered and sang all the time. Mary Travers had the most beautiful female voice I've ever heard.
Blood Sweat & Tears..You Make Me So Very Happy! Promise u will LOVE IT!!!!
I had this album when I was little kid in the 60s. I almost wore out the grooves in the record playing it over and over. Such an awesome memory.
They are one of my favorite groups if all time! Their harmonizing is the best. The song made cry as a child and still does! Jet Plane, This Land is your land, so many more!
In 2008 I met Peter Yarrow (the shorter guy on Amber's side of the screen) at Barnes & Noble when he and his daughter adapted the story of Puff into a children's book. He was super sweet and gave me a hug. ❤ Since you've got kids, I recommend watching the version they did in a children's special called "Peter, Paul, and Mommy Too!" because it's a much more energized version!
They actually made a cartoon movie about this song. I absolutely loved it. Haven't seen them broadcast it in years
I'm so excited you reacted to Peter, Paul and Mary. They're such a talented trio. Whenever you watch later videos of them singing their songs, the entire audience sings along and many have tears in their eyes on some songs. The next song must be Blowin in the Wind. It's such a special song.
My first favorite song! 1960's! :)
I was a teen during the 60's. Not once did I ever think this was about drugs. I think that comes from people who have drugs on the brain! I'm with you, it's a whimsical happy/sad song about childhood and growing up. My baby will be 50 in 2023 and I played it for my kids often!
I’ve never been able to listen to this song without crying, it’s a favorite childhood memory but also a heartbreaker as an adult. 🥺
Me too.
Terrific memories of summer rides to the beach: Dad driving, Mom beside him, and my brothers and I in the back of the station wagon singing at the top of our lungs! Nearly 60 years ago!!!
What a gift to have such memories!
@@sourisvoleur4854 Thank you @Souris Voleur! My short term memory is weakening with age, but the old memories are still fresh, especially this time of year, surrounded by reminders of Christmases past! I pray you enjoy a Blessed holiday season! p.s. Aren't Jordan and Amber a treat!?
@@guygoodwin6889 Thank you! Here's wishing a very happy Christmas to you and your loved ones. I love watching them, and especially when they have their dear little ones! Mine are all grown and my grandbabies are in Europe, so they are my surrogate grandkids! This whole channel has a wholesome vibe, and Jordan and Amber are the kind of people you'd love to live next door to.
all i have to hear is the opening 15 seconds of this song and i tear up. loss of innocence and wonder is something we all experience, and carry with us the rest of our lives. try as we adults might,we'll never see the world through a child's eyes again. it's very sad,but it is a part of life.
All about the beauty of a child's imagination. As an only child, with very few friends, I had to rely on my imagination to entertain myself quite often and Puff the Magic Dragon was one of my favorite songs.
Check out Peter Paul and Mary's song the Wedding Song (There is Love) so beautiful.
This song was co-written in 1961 by Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers with lyrics based on a 1959 poem by Leonard Lipton. My mom's brother went to college with Stookey at Michigan State.
"Where have all the flowers gone" is a must!
a must,"the Wedding Song"...beautiful.
There was an animation made from this song. It used to play every year. I loved it and was so sad when I didn't think my son would be able to see it. I found a copy online and it became one of his favourites.
It's a wonderful story about friendship and believing in yourself. Your kids would love it!
As a child this song played heavily on the radio. I remember then going to a parade and seeing a float with a giant Puff !
"Puff, the Magic Dragon" is a song written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary from a poem by Leonard Lipton. It was made popular by Peter, Paul and Mary in a 1962 recording released in January 1963. Lipton wrote a poem about a dragon in 1959, and when Yarrow found it, he wrote the lyrics to "Puff" based on the poem. After the song was released, Yarrow searched for Lipton to give him credit for the song.
I was five years old and constantly listening to Top 40 radio with my sibilings. So much great music in the late sixties! This was my childhood favorite and it is a really special song to me. Thanks!
This song was written by Peter Yarrow the lead singer on the song. Its about the loss of the innocents growing up. This is for the kids. There were always kids in attendance of their concerts. Check out their song "The Wedding Song". It was written by Paul (Noel) Stookey the taller male singer. Weave Me The Sunshine is another song you can sing with you girls.
Oh wow, this is a page right out of my childhood. My parents were huge Peter, Paul & Mary fans and I literally grew up with this song. Thanks for taking me back you guys - peace and love ❤️.
I used to listen to Peter Paul, and Mary growing up in the 70s, and 80s, this brings me back to a simpler time that I wish that you two could have experienced. You would have loved those times! So much electric joy!
It's a fairy like tale....it's FOLK MUSIC!!! It was for children. I LOVED it as child.
This song was huge. Yes Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary.. They were all darlings of the hippy gen. I really enjoy their song Lemon Tree. Oh and you would like Simon and Garfunkel's El Condor Pasa, and Scarborough Fair.
There are so many great folk songs by Peter, Paul, and Mary. One of my favorites is one my dad who was born in ‘49 sings and plays his guitar and it was written and sang by them during Vietnam called “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?”
This group was a marvelous Folk Song group has many top records to their credit. Your right it is a fairy tale. Very old,. Lot of theirs are slow
The group THE Letterman another folks song group. Jackie aged and died
This group has been singing since the early 50.
40-50s folk songs were very popular.
PPM has SO MANY fantastic songs, and not just the more familiar ones. I have every single album of theirs and each album has great songs on them!! Their harmonies and guitar playing just can’t be beat.
A music critic once described their voices as "two cellos and an angel."
You really need to try In the Early Morning Rain. Great song and harmony. I think this may be the best harmonizing band ever.
I love Elvis' version of that song.
"500 Miles" is another great PP & M song. Also, "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" is an absolute must as 1, a song of gentle beauty, 2, a song to help understand the mood of the time as it became a powerful antiwar statement.
The song brings back fond memories for me. I briefly lived down the street from Paul. His oldest daughter and I were playmates. I was too young to know and appreciate his basement studio. As a young black kid Mr. Stookey, (as I called him) and his wife were always kind to me. I wasn’t surprised when I learned they had performed at the civil rights march in D.C.
They have an album of children's songs called Peter Paul and Mommy. Boa Constrictor, Going to the Zoo, and the Marvelous Toy are my favorites on that album. Where have all the Flowers Gone and Blowing in the the Wind are also awesome.
Marvelous Toy is one of my faves.
I have this album from when it came out
I love Where Have All the Flowers Gone
Going to the Zoo. Another Tom Paxton song.
I always thought of this song when reading The Giving Tree. I agree with all the songs others have recommended for Peter, Paul, and Mary. Thanks for reminding me of them.
I remember this song when I was 12. I'm 64 now. Loved the song and I love Robert DeNiro
Puff the Magic Dragon🎶🎶🎶. I love Peter, Paul and Mary.
