It's actually hard to believe that nobody at Mojang working on the update thought of either using feathers for the brush recipe or making the torchflower glow.
Feathers are probably the least useful material for how common they are. They really need more uses

Here's how I would do the brush recipe.

Second this. Feather has always felt like an underutilized item for crafting imo.
Arrows I get from villagers or killing skeletons, so I'm never gonna craft those, I barely every craft Book & Quill, and how often to people make Firework Stars realistically? Feathers always pile up in my storage because I never want to throw anything out lol

I mean... given the texture of the brush, I feel like it would make sense to have two sticks and then just one string. Like a string shovel! I guess a string sword could also work

I think the main problem with the recipe is that it uses two sticks. The handle on that brush is clearly not that long, but it is kind of thick. One copper ingot would make more sense.

I'd make the recipe diagonal. You'd place a stick in the bottom left corner, a copper ingot in the centre, and three feathers or strings in the top right slots.
Crafting recipie:
Put the stick in the bottom left, copper ingot in the middle and feathers in the top middle, top right, and the right side of the copper.

and 2 feathers next to that one so in top middle and middle right slots
this would still require the same amount and fits with how other items like fishing rods , flint steels , sheers , are all diagonal recipes

They could make the recipe diagonal. So stick in bottom left, copper in the centre, and three feathers in the top, top right, and right slots.
The copper would be like a ferrule. That metal band on pencils that holds on the eraser, except it would bunch up the feathers and connect them to the stick like a paintbrush
My suggestion for the brush recipe should have 3 feathers in the top left, top middle, and middle left (so they are like an axe), 1 copper ingot in the direct center, and a stick in the bottom right

STK | AIR | AIR
AIR is air, COP is copper, STR is string, and STK is stick
So the shape that elements make in the crafting table really fits the actual brush item :)
UPD: Oh I just found the same crafting recipe in the comments lol. So that means that this recipe is more like intuitive

CLEARLY, this crafting recipe is a placeholder one they use when making new items, and a pickaxe recipe makes the most sense since it is the one most people remember

Inspired me to turn the lights on in my basement and make a real string pickaxe.
it should be a diagonal recipe. Copper in the middle, string bottom-left, and three feathers in the top right. That way you encompass the breadth of featherage, explicitly make the copper binding, and the stick has a directional match to form the handle. As far as I am concerned, this is the only correct alternative.
I think the 3 string are supposed to represent all of the little hairs in the brush going in every which direction, but it still looks like a string pickaxe

If real brushes are made from animal hair, then the closest Minecraft equivalent would be string in form and shape. The string pickaxe, as unsettling as it may be, makes the most sense from a realism standpoint.
The string pickaxe can mine spiders giving sussy spider eyes. It also makes guitar sounds when using the tool because it is string.

An appropriate brush recipe, IMO, would be;
5 feathers in a helmet shape
copper in the middle

That's not a pickaxe that's a pom-pom.
'They could make a new item which could be called "Bundle of feathers" which is crafted with three feathers in a V shape on the top and three pieces of string in a V shape on the bottom.
This new item would then be used to craft a brush with the bundle of feathers on the top middle, stick on the bottom centre and a copper ingot in the middle centre.
Not only would it give feathers more uses rather than arrows, it could also be crafted back into individual feathers when placed back into the crafting table (The string used to craft the bundle of feathers would be sacrificed upon reversal so spider farms would become a thing in order to stock up on string.) If I wanted to take this seriously and use all the ingredients I think it needs it would be: 1 stick, 1 copper for the metal container, 1 string in the middle to hold the next ingredient together, then 2 feathers on each side. Or grass clippings/wheat/flowers to make the brush green/yellow/flower color for cosmetic reasons.

The long awaited sequel to Technoblade’s string axe has arrived.
SO cool! If you don’t know yet in bedrock you can turn on a feature called “Next Major update” I am on pocket edition and I have the feature.
String tools work like wooden tools just more weak. However if you try to mine sugarcane/bamboo then it strings it, stopping it from growing. And mining a tripwire activates it.
An easy fix for the [copper, feather] recipe placement is move the stick to the bottom left, and take one feather from top left and move to center right. Would look more like the item.

String makes sense, as brushes are made of animal hair, and in Minecraft the closest thing to hair is string. (You can combine string to make wool.)
Feathers don't make much sense, that's to make a duster...

A feathers pickaxe would still be better than a string pickaxe. But I do think the user considered adding copper to avoid the pickaxe recipe altogether. As you made it, 3 feathers at top, copper in middle, stick at bottom. A pickaxe has 2 sticks, this is a non-pickaxe with copper and stick.

In my opinion the crafting recipe should be three feathers at the top, one string in the middle, one stick at the bottom. The feathers are the front bit, and the string is used to tie them to the stick.
