I am doing it right now exactly, trying to lose my mind, so that I can lose my mind, and do some quick "attacks" of "Creation Attempts" to try to get beyond this PTSD I have built up over the past 20 years being alone here in the USA! Yeah it really is that soulless, outside of NYC, this place is an illness. Stay Lit my brother! Lit on the Low! That's what doing nothing is all about!
I got pretty good at it and found my calling through it :)) I'm happy since then and I'm super calm since then. The best advice you can make: Do nothing until you know where to go! :)
this is my second week doing slow living, and honestly, I am already noticing progress is hard sometimes, I realized I need total silence to work at first, and if I am feeling down, my head keeps thinking about bad things... but when I slow down, take a breath, try to enjoy the moment, I feel more prepare to get through my day. I being doing more, while taking the time to do nothing thank you for showing me this live style. I hope I can keep doing it for decades to come
Finally, something I excel at! ☺️. I’m quite sensitive and also introverted so I’m comfortable with spending time alone and because I can use my time as I wish I often “do nothing”, sometimes for quite extended periods. I love to daydream and let my mind wander, so if I’m not actively occupied in doing something that’s often what I do. I can recommend it.
Wow, I'm seeing this comment now. For some reason, I'm at a stage in life where I need to be alone from people, and do nothing. Your comment makes me not feel guilty about feeling this way and being like this
@@nicksharma8238 Your time is your own to do as you wish and I highly recommend guilt free daydreaming. No one will know but you, and it’s so good for your mental health. Enjoy ☺️🌹
Yes, people I know ask me ‘What are you doing this weekend?’ When I say ‘I’m not doing anything.’ I get invited to all kinds of things, but I tell them ‘I’m doing nothing on purpose.’ It confuses them, and they think me a slacker, but that’s okay. I like doing nothing very often, it’s relaxing and soothing. I highly recommend doing nothing.
That's because people fill their free time with activities so they don't have to listen to the noise of their mind. Most people can't stand to be with themselves, so they distract themselves with activities
I go through phases. Sometimes I am enormously productive. Other times I have epic abilities to do absolutely nothing. There is time for everything... Including nothing.
slowing down and even doing nothing really is the fastest way to get to where we want to be. because it's when our mind slows down, our thoughts... and so the nudges and the inspiring ideas from our soul can finally reach us, we can finally hear them in the absence of all that noise! enjoyed your video!
Loved the video and totally agreed with the 'doing nothing' even if it's for a short period of time that we can take out of our busy lives. I do it every now and then, frequently while I'm eating when i resort to not play something on my phone or tv and just eat in silence ❤
Thank you for this video! It’s often easy to feel guilty for ‘doing nothing’. Simply sitting and being present with the moment can be more beautiful than ‘doing other things’. ❤
I spend hours every day doing nothing. 5.30pm onwards it's do nothing time. A bath, peaceful music, reading, lying and kind of semi thinking. I recently started to live alone and find it's altogether lovely. Feels as though I'm expanding into the rooms. There's no loneliness and I've stopped getting sick. I just adore all of this time.
I needed this today. I'm drowning in work at a new job, our fridge died this week, everything feels urgent and I'm always behind. Today in the office, I'm going to take it sloooow and see what happens.
I miss Jenny Odell's book How to Do Nothing (2019) here. It claims the very same thing that our lives are defined by how productive we are. It's a great book.
Peter, thank you for this thoughtful piece and your effort to collect some really interesting material. For me, I sometimes need to go into deep stillness, where I have a day of not doing anything, not even walking anywhere, no plans except to just have meals and alternate between reading, resting on the couch with some tidying up when it seems right. Doing this creates a feeling of unplugging from the world which is restorative, and as has been beautifully said in other comments here, allows some original ideas and inspirations to surface. Keep up your great work.
You're welcome, Lachlan! It's so necessary to carve out moments in time to unwind and have nothing on your plate. I actually just had one of those days yesterday, where I had been working for 8 days straight and my head was just so full, I had to take the whole day off. And instead of using that time to do other things on my want/have-to-do-list (read; research cooking recipes; watch video courses; etc), I literally did nothing but go out and walk around town for a few hours. Just paying attention to what I saw around me, being present. I sometimes feel guilty when I do it, because there are always more things to do than I have time + headspace for. But I've found that over the long term, I'm able to accomplish more + feel better if I allow myself to do nothing at times. Good luck on your journey!
Thank you Peter. Very good. Without depth of psychology and an insight to philosophy even the most fundamental phenomena are impossible to understand. You include both here plus the wisdom of a 73-year old award-winning actor and strategies from modern cognitive behavioral therapy and research. You presented this in 00:11 in an entertaining way. It taught me and reminded me that those who have something to say and who have considered their audience in the preparation of their message do not need much time. My guess is that like simple solutions there will be quite a few people who miss it for the simple reason that the solution isn’t complex enough which they presume solutions to be. I hope you’ll keep doing what you’re doing. It’s very helpful. Thank you.
This video is much more helpful than a lot of videos from RUclipsrs with hundreds of thousands of followers. Great work and hope your channel will get more views.
In Buddhism there’s something called sathara sathipattanaya which is very similar to this. Just live mindfully during all day and be aware of your body movements.
It's great to have found you! I have been accused of being to chilled in the past, but doing nothing is really hard for me. I meditate, and it helps but I can see that there is a lot to just being. I can't see big business adopting a slower pace any time soon, and it's a pity they have an automatic need to grow so quickly, why? Some of the biggest and strongest businesses today have developed over decades if not hundreds of years. I will look up some of the books you mentioned. Thanks for your help.
I love your slow living videos 🤗 plus your book recommendations. I decided to take my mental health seriously and your videos have helped me 🙂 . Thank you so much!
Your videos are my meaningfull. I watch most of your videos and try to learn about minimalism and slow life. I try to take 10 min per day to do nothing and I'm proud to do it, even it's damn hard ! lol I think I'm hyperactive and I was raised with the idea that we should always go and do fast. Otherwise you were considered as a "less-than-nothing". It was so hard to me. Taking time to do things is for me "against my nature". But I want to work hard at it and have a better life. Thank you to participating in making my life better.
Thank you, Madie, for sharing your thoughts! I'm glad my videos help you in a meaningful way 😀. Know that you're not the only one looking to slow down. There's nothing wrong with working hard. I do so myself, too. But there's more to life than just hustling. Even though you may feel pressured by your environment to act in a certain way, it's important to listen to your intuition and find moments to just sit back and do nothing.
Hi Peter! Yes, I take days off, going to the local bike path that follows the river! I take in nature, think! I eventually get to a large park, I sit down and enjoy! Sometimes talking to people. It is like I am enjoying now! Because later on isn't always golden. It is good for our mind! Helps us keep grounded. We remember what is important in life! Thanks for your time! Enjoy your next solitude moment! I drink tea when I sit and ponder! Lol!🤔 ⏳ 🫖☕ 🤗

Greetings from NYC which is the FASTEST place in earth 😬. This was a very thoughtful video and I enjoyed the message. I look forward to your next one. Best!!
Thanks, Mary, appreciate it! NYC must be a difficult city to slow down. You might be interested in picking up a copy of the book 'New Slow City'. In this book, William Powers describes his experience of living a slow lifestyle for 1 year in the middle of Manhattan! One of his tips is 'living at the 3rd story'. I mentioned it in my video 'Guide to Slow Living in the City'. This is a practice whereby you take control of what you give attention to. As William Powers writes: _“Out of the buy-o-sphere and into the biosphere.”_ He found that he only needed half of his attention on the street, to keep from sleepwalking into traffic and other pedestrians. That freed up the rest of his focus to look up to the level of the third story in a building. Life is happening up there. Flying birds, a gentle breeze in the trees, perhaps you can spot people in their apartments going about their lives. Take care!
Doing nothing was one of my best skills, when I was young. lol Now, I need reminders and that is why I believe this may be one of your most valuable messages - I pinned it to my desktop!

Hi Peter. Good video. You can say I'm VERY good at doing nothing... I struggle with procrastination a lot. Can you make content on differentiating slow living vs being lazy? Because I really want to "set me own tempo", but want to make sure it's not just me trying to validate my own laziness and procrastination. Thank you, from Columbus Ohio
That's a great suggestion, Monica! Will add it to the list. I think the key thing to take away about slow living is that it's not about doing everything slowly, but finding balance. Taking things more slowly is especially important for those who always live in the fast lane. Or the perfectionists that push themselves a lot (guilty of that one 🙋♂️). If you're always busy, it's important to build in blocks of time do to nothing and recharge. However, if you're already doing things at a slow pace, procrastinate, and feel like you're not getting the important things done as a result, finding balance could mean educating yourself about productivity hacks. Like the Pomodoro technique, joining or setting up an accountability group/mastermind, or using Focusmate to work together with someone else and stay focused. I tend to be more on the side of constant hustle, hence my interest in slow living 😃. But you make a good point, I'm going to reflect on it and it will find its way into a future video one day!
I think I might know how you can distinguish between the two. Procrastination doesn't feel good. It's like a mixture of the voice in your head repeatedly telling you to do something, and you trying to ignore it or drown it out in various ways, games tv etc. Choosing to do nothing (though there's plenty to do) is calming, relaxing and doesn't need to be smothered as it doesn't induce any feelings of discomfort. Quite the contrary.
I have been unemployed already about a year and I can't find a job in my field so yeah doing nothing it's what I've been forced to do... I'm in a very bad place in the world
