    The "Birka" pouch is based on a find from Birka, Sweden, a major viking trade port. The original had several metal pieces, which were actually what was found, as most of the leather had decayed. The shape and clasping method of the pouch were extrapolated from these metal pieces.
    My version of the pouch usually includes a tooled flap, because leather tooling is my specialty, and I think it adds beauty and character to the pouch (and makes it unique/individual); However, there are very few examples of tooled leather in the viking age, most of the finds being on sheathes and holy books from Ireland. It's hard to say whether this is because the Irish did more tooling than the Scandinavian vikings, or if more leather survived in Irish settlements because of the acidic bogs present there (which preserve organic material very well). We don't know if any pouches like this would have had tooling on them... but it sure does look nice!
    The design book used is Viking and Slavic Ornamental Design, published by Triglav. They're out of stock on Amazon, but you can get them from this Etsy store:

    I was pleased to see you did some tooling of the leather. It really aesthetically rounds out the piece. I think it'd be super cool to see a series on recreations/adaptations of historical leatherwork. Subbed. Keep up the good work.

      I have a book on viking tooling on leather sheaths (mainly from Dublin) that I would love to work on some day, but I don't really have knives to make sheaths for, haha. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep that in mind!

    Your work is incredible. Instant subscribe. What really blew me away is the videography though. You have approx 47,000 camera angles, all of them perfectly framed, focused and lit, how on earth do you do that and still get anything done? I've tried making craft videos and do you stop to move the camera every 2 stitches and every time you pick up another tool?

    • @FoxesandRavens
      @FoxesandRavens  2 года назад +2

      Thank you Danny! I do have to move the camera around a lot, and make sure that I'm in the frame even though I can't see in the camera, haha. It's quite a time consuming process, which is why I haven't made any videos in a long time!

    Beautiful! If I may make a friendly suggestion...to dress up the edges a little more, I use tragacanth gum and an edge slicker (Tandy sells both of them). You can get by without the gum by using just water, but the gum does make it a little smoother and makes it easier. Sorry I don’t have any videos of my work uploaded to assist...most of my stuff is just swordplay.

    • @FoxesandRavens
      @FoxesandRavens  4 года назад +3

      Hey James! Haha, I know about edge slicking products, and I'm mostly just like... not a fan of super slick edges, hahaha. I do it a bit for clients, and especially for garment/costume pieces, but I hate when they're ultra slick and plastic looking (edge paint makes me cringe!!!). I think maybe I forgot to film the edge slicking part in this video, but I do it with water usually, I find if you buff it right it gets quite a smooth edge, and then I go over with beeswax balm.

    Not to sound creepy, but I love finding videos of beautiful women with great skill making stuff with thier hands, wether it be knives, pottery or leather, I learn so much because I pay more attention AND they seem to be more skillful as they rely less on strength more on technique. Great work, you've got a new subscriber and I'll go through your catalogue of videos in the next few days ave watch anything new that comes out. Bravo

      I know, it took me ages to film everything, and I was just so excited to edit and post, that I forgot to show the final steps of conditioning and burnishing! But I actually do usually burnish the edges a little, with the help of an oil and beeswax leather conditioner like Aussie.

    • @FoxesandRavens
      @FoxesandRavens  8 месяцев назад

      Yeah it's fun, although to be honest, I think a regular #11 x-acto or hobby knife or whatever you know it as does the job just as well and is less expensive to replace the blade. Here's a similar one that Tandy offer: tandyleather.ca/products/tandypro-tools-precision-knife But these days I use a knife more like this one: tandyleather.ca/products/tandypro-r-japanese-style-flat-knife

      The Tandy is a great place to look for beginners kits, although my friends have gone for Amazon or eBay. Depends on your budget! To begin, I recommend an x-acto knife, a medium size edge beveler, a hole punch (or punches), waxed thread and needles. And of course, a cutting mat or surface you can cut on (I've used wooden cutting boards when desperate, haha)
