  • Part 1 of a dramatic visualization of Ottorino Respighi's 'Pini di Roma'.
In this symphonic poem, Respighi shows the pine trees that have dominated the cityscape of Rome and the deserted Campagna plain for centuries. The trees have become symbols of the once glorious Romanesque empire.
Part 1: Children are playing by the pine trees in the Villa Borghese Gardens, dancing the Italian equivalent of the nursery rhyme "Ring a Ring o'Roses".
They also march like soldiers and mimick battles, twittering and shreiking like swallows.
Performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, conductor Johannes Fritzsch.
