Bought this exact model few years back. Also had the same extraction problems Eric mentioned. My theory is the marine-coat finish added enough friction to the chamber, making the shell extraction a problem after expansion. Applied Flitz metal polish inside the chamber, with a dremel bufferer. Or perhaps the extractor also needed breaking in, I dunno, but it runs smooth now after 100 rds. No trip to factory needed. Tricked it out with a streamlight forend, magpul stock, and a GGG sidesaddle shell carrier. She groovy.
Great gun! I bough mine in South Florida when the OJ trial was going on and a lot of noises were being made. I lived on a boat and the gun has been through salt water and hurricane force winds. Came with a metal trigger guard. I installed a ghost ring sight and a metal safety. I like it better than my 870, particular the speed of the thumb safety, and the reload capability. The finish has the ability to absorb a large quantity of oil. Thanks!!!

Hello Eric. Great review. I own a 1999 production Mossberg 590SP. I’ve made a few upgrades like the metal trigger assembly and safety switch. This 590 is a supremely reliable shotgun and thus far over 2,000 rounds and not a single glitch. Now as to the Mariner coated 590. I’ve read and heard of other’s with feed or extraction related problems and my impression is that these are related to the coating applied to the shotgun and the fact that it interferes with or affects the tolerances of the various cycling or extraction areas of the mechanism. Apparently something Mossberg didn’t anticipate. Apparently either with use and cleaning or sending the weapon back to Mossberg and the issues are dealt with. I really appreciate the ergonomics of the 500 series Mossbergs the user friendly tang mounted safety and ease of it’s use for left or right handed shooters the action release lever and it’s ease of use. Controls that allow you to keep you eyes on any potential threats and near the trigger while operating them. Good luck with that 590. Be safe.

This is the gun that made me want a 590 over a decade ago. Playing Combat Arms, this was my shotty of choice. It's a beautiful firearm, but when Mossy released the Retrograde, it was lights out, I gave up on the Mariner cuz that Retro is unbelievably sexy with the wood furniture.
