Bought this exact model few years back. Also had the same extraction problems Eric mentioned. My theory is the marine-coat finish added enough friction to the chamber, making the shell extraction a problem after expansion. Applied Flitz metal polish inside the chamber, with a dremel bufferer. Or perhaps the extractor also needed breaking in, I dunno, but it runs smooth now after 100 rds. No trip to factory needed. Tricked it out with a streamlight forend, magpul stock, and a GGG sidesaddle shell carrier. She groovy.

Great gun! I bough mine in South Florida when the OJ trial was going on and a lot of noises were being made. I lived on a boat and the gun has been through salt water and hurricane force winds. Came with a metal trigger guard. I installed a ghost ring sight and a metal safety. I like it better than my 870, particular the speed of the thumb safety, and the reload capability. The finish has the ability to absorb a large quantity of oil. Thanks!!!

Hello Eric. Great review. I own a 1999 production Mossberg 590SP. I’ve made a few upgrades like the metal trigger assembly and safety switch. This 590 is a supremely reliable shotgun and thus far over 2,000 rounds and not a single glitch. Now as to the Mariner coated 590. I’ve read and heard of other’s with feed or extraction related problems and my impression is that these are related to the coating applied to the shotgun and the fact that it interferes with or affects the tolerances of the various cycling or extraction areas of the mechanism. Apparently something Mossberg didn’t anticipate. Apparently either with use and cleaning or sending the weapon back to Mossberg and the issues are dealt with. I really appreciate the ergonomics of the 500 series Mossbergs the user friendly tang mounted safety and ease of it’s use for left or right handed shooters the action release lever and it’s ease of use. Controls that allow you to keep you eyes on any potential threats and near the trigger while operating them. Good luck with that 590. Be safe.

Got one in the early 90's when I was living on a boat on the Miami River. Made for really good sleeping, being that I rigged a pully system so as to pull the boat away from the dock when going to sleep.
When on the hook (that is salty take for anchor) mostly N. Key Largo area, with the 590M (candy cane OO buck / slug) and the compliment of a stainless steel Ruger Mini 30 (7.65x39) and finally a Ruger SS. P90DC 45 ACP, the only thing I worried about was if the fish were bighting so I could have fried snapper and beer for breakfast. Sounds like over kill being on South Biscayne Bay, but Angelfish creek was the last big pass into the bay (barrier islands) before you had to go way down south or north close to the coast guard and customs, so it had the potential of being an attractive place to come in with a load of drugs and drug runners are not particularly good people. It was rare but did happen where I drug runner was tipped off that the authorities were tipped off and were expecting their boat so they went onboard an isolated anchored boat killed the people transferred their drugs and put the bodies in their boat and went in. It sucks that you have to think of the un-thinkable, but, "he who fails to plan, plans to fail", B. Franklin, an old smart dude, a polymath (that is a really really smart in everything) Mr. C note.

Great video 👍👍. I have been pondering on getting a rifle that is marine weather friendly to my collection.A 45-70 stainless steel lever action w/optical aim point. There’s always pirates or smugglers looking for a new boat to their disposable boat collection.I love my stainless steel pistols because they don’t typically rust after forgetting about them for a 5-10 years.I clean them in my sonic cleaner with simple green after the range. Then heavily oil them up.
With over 2.5M+viewers.If you have an ear to Mossberg to whisper in. A shockwave mariner with stainless parts.
One excellent accessory that would be a must to get to all Mossberg 590A1 rifle shotgun w/Bayonet lug is a flashlight attachment. The reason why it would be superior tactically.Because the silhouette of the gun barrel would not be seen by the aggressive target.
Even if the flashlight/laser pointer combo is exceptionally overpriced. It will be well worth it.

Love my 590A1 20 inch… that thing is a beast. I’ve had 870s and 500s but as far as a pump gun goes my favorite of those 3 is the A1. Sure it’s a little heavier than the 870 and 500… but the 870 had a horrible trigger and was hard to load quickly with its loading gate… I can double and in some cases triple feed shells into that 590 without any issues… the 500 was great for hunting with its longer barrel options and chokes…

when aiming pull the shotgun back into the shoulder with the hand on the fore arm . When you pull the trigger the slide automatically comes back in the open position then just push the fore end forward which loads the chamber with another round . instead of 3 actions you have reduced it to 2 actions .

Bought a 590 security (yet it has the bayonet lug and heat shield on it) 23 years ago great shotgun and at the time it was in the top 5 combat shotguns made, got it for $200 (try and buy one now for that) anyhow I still got it and just put a pistol grip stock on it, really looks sharp 👍👍

Mossberg, nothing fancy, but they work. When you need them, they go bang. Not the prettiest, not the snazziest, but it is a work horse.

I can smell the power and smoke all the way up here in Michigan!! We can get into International waters here in the Great Lakes by crossing over the Canada/ USA line. I will take your advice for a boat gun as one can never know who is out thereon the waters with you.
