That's where the drama is. It's created by the writers and actors and camera work, not by panicky smash cuts between clips lasting tenths of a second. Silly editors, the company is paying this amazing actor, so let him work.
I will never understand why in the UK we watch American shows with all kinds of accents with no problem, but for the US audience any UK show has to be remade. Like, put the subtitles on if you can't understand what they're saying.
It's not the American audience, plenty of UK shows are big over here. Plus there are plenty of American-produced shows that cast almost entirely British actors (or actors with British accents) like Game of Thrones. If I had to guess I'd say the reason this keeps happening is either money or rights. American tv networks don't just want to rebroadcast an existing show, they want to re-make the show so that they retain more of the profits, merchandising rights, whatever it is they're after.
yeah, I don’t know that this is a demand of Americans. I watch British television all the time. That said, we’re spoiled by having everything made to cater to us, so probably most Americans I know wouldn’t bother seeking out British television except where there’s no alternative. And I think part of it comes down to what the other commentor had to say - to the studios it’s all about money. They have a proven show in the can, they just have to reproduce, and frankly California is one of the largest economies in the world. So production value almost always skyrockets when a show is remade in the US, it’s just a fact. Unfortunately that means often a lot of charm is lost, or studios assuming Americans want something dumber than they actually do. Things are only remade to the expectation of what it SEEMS like we’d like. So the average American isn’t likely to be introduced to great British humor like A Bit of Fry and Laurie (not that THAT could have been remade). BUT, when you have a juggernaut like The Office as proof of how well this can do when it goes right, it’s all too tempting. I will say, I tried to send my mom a clip of Staged with Tennant and Sheen, and she couldn’t understand wtf they were saying :/ Now, I don’t typically have a problem, but is that bc I’ve watched content from the UK for decades? Probably. And do I still need to pop on subtitles occasionally? Definitely. I certainly need to Google locations in the UK or slang to fully appreciate a lot of references/jokes. At any rate, my parents would need subtitles to watch full genuine accented British/Scottish/Irish content, and my dad’s eyes are bad so that’s a no go. So yeah, I guess if they want an American audience and they don’t want to leave out a large swath of Americans, it’s easier to just redo it, up the production value and make it easier for us to understand. And at the end of the day, we’re generally so spoiled in having content prepared for our easy consumption that we are probably less likely to seek out foreign content than other countries. (Side note, with shows like Good Omens, the “quality gap” has proven perfectly capable of closing. And I personally don’t mind something looking a little “shoestring budget” - I, Claudius and Black Adder for instance.)

from my experience, it's sometimes easier to understand different accents in your second language than in your first. i feel the same way as you do about americans saying scottish/irish/etc. accents are hard to understand when i, an american, hear spanish or german speakers make jokes about people with certain dialects of spanish or german being hard to understand. i think it might be because we don't have a specific dialect's pronunciation expectations as drilled into us when we learn new languages (even if we do usually learn a specific dialect, like germans learn british english and americans learn mexican spanish). i think without having heard things pronounced over and over again the same way your whole life, it's a lot easier to understand when people say it slightly different to how you learned it. i do agree with you though, that most accents of a language you speak are intelligible if you give it a chance for more than like thirty seconds haha. or use subtitles. i don't understand why some americans are so averse to subtitles.

I feel like American audiences just can't understand what's happening without the actors expressing their emotions on the level of an eight-year-old, and music that would make Colombian soap operas blush.
The music from the American version was seemingly meant to make the scene more dramatic and probably has the opposite effect because it's much harder to take seriously.

I've only seen the episode once, maybe 10 years ago, but I've always remembered Tennant going "bluhdee twittah!"
It's amazing that there has to be a different version for the US instead of just airing the UK version in America.
I’m not familiar with either show, but it’s interesting that he’s in both versions of it.
Jesus, his Scottish accent is excessively bleeding into his American accent 😂
I feel like American audiences just can't understand what's happening without the actors expressing their emotions on the level of an eight-year-old, and music that would make Colombian soap operas blush.
The real reason Twitter changed its name 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
he sounds so WRONG with an american accent i cant-
After watching this I finally realized, David Tennant voiced Scrooge in the DuckTales reboot
The music from the American version was seemingly meant to make the scene more dramatic and probably has the opposite effect because it's much harder to take seriously.
The actress at 00:06 was the same person who portrayed Prisoner Zero’s last human disguise in _The Eleventh Hour,_ the episode after Tennant retired from the role of the Doctor.
Oscar winner Olivia Colman, you mean?
😂
The trailers were nearly identical which is funny. Except, the British one was darker and had a better cast (in my opinion). I'll still watch the American one though, cause I love David and I can actually watch it at home. Also, his accent isn't too bad, not the greatest, but it's not bad. It just is weird hearing an American accent come out of his mouth
Oh god this clip is 9 years old and twitter was still an issue back then.
God the over editing and unprofessional cuts are so awful in the American version, in the English one, the camera work is so smooth and the cinematography is so fluid
I thought the second one must have been a sketch he did for Comic Relief or something, it was so ridiculous. That was actually REAL?!
As someone who is in uni for film it *facinates* me the difference between American and British media culture
I love his natural accent, but I had to play it a couple of times to get some parts XD
Everyone's hating on Gracepoint, so here's a funfact: There's also an french adaption of Broadchurch. 'Malaterra'.
Does David Tennant say "but zer lavs, zey were destrooooyed"?
Is Malaterra any good?
@@paperlacejane even worse than Gracepoint. And since it's because of obvious reasons without David in it, I stopped watching it after ep 1.
@@originallypoki Fair. I might have to check it out to get some french practice in anyway. I'll have to brace myself for no-Tennant.
I need to see Broadchurch. I've only seen Gracepoint so far.
You'll love it :)
WHAT IS THIS???
I just figured that Gracepoint is the remake of Broadchurch with David Tennant also in it? But why??? Why make the remake? Broadchurch is so good, why Gracepoint exist in the first place?
Because ... 'Muricah? 🤔😁
I love Broadchurch as it’s filmed in my home county Dorset.
David tennant needs to do a Boston accent
Apparently Brits have a trouble with that accent.
Dr. Who hates Twitter
He sounds like Michael Crawford’s spoken lines in “Hello Dolly!"
I don’t understand why they made two of the same show and cast the same dude in both lol
That first season was the best cop show season I've ever watched.
BLOODY TWITTER
It’s like comparing Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange all over again.
If Doctor Strange was an American remake of Sherlock...
Doctor Strange sees Ross
"And you're agent . . . Watson. . . Is that right?"
Ross: (in the middle of a traumatic flashback) "N-no, no I . . .I've come from under the hill."
"Great. He tells riddles."
David Tennant ranting like Christian Bale on the Terminator Salvation set.
OH MY GOD... his American accent sounds EXACTLY like Emelio Estevez in The Mighty Ducks. EXACTLY.
THIS IS SO FUNNY 💀💀 he really just plays the same roles huh
There was no need to remake this show.
@ 0:24 Skyler White yo?
Ok, lets do it the same, but have REALLY LOUD MUSIC, and have each shot be 1 second long!
Brilliant boss!!!
😂
British broadchurch is so gritty n real an American broadchurch just feels like TMZ 😭
I love that this was basically his Scrooge McDuck voice.
This is so over the top I thought it was a Mitchell and Webb sketch.
His American accent has slips of his own it’s kinda funny
bless him he must've been so bored doing evrything again
Yes, I don't know why he wanted to do it?
Like doing the same play every night for months?
Leave it to the BBC to find a way to sell the same series twice.
Gotta make money somehow since the government are reluctant to pay their way. Seems like good management to me 😉
Wow David Tennant with or without the accent i prefer with the accent even tho sometimes i don't understand him
Dominique Pilon which accent???
Americans: so afraid of foreigners that the even feel the need to remake english speaking Television.
Just by this short clip, you can tell the original British one is miles better lmao
That....was trippy.
damn americans really do love making everything seem more emotional then it really is.
This reminds me of UK vs. US Kitchen Nightmares
0:00 - 0:05 When Trump tweets.
WHO TOLD THAT JOURNALIST!
They should have just broadcasted broadchurch in the states. That show was gold
i've only seen him as the Doctor where he puts on an english accent so this gave me ✨scottish whiplash✨
I'm an American who loved Broadchurch, always assumed the American version was unnecessary and awful, and learned today that I was right.
OMW THE AMERICAN ACCENT I SCREAMED
This is fucking hilarious. Reminds me of Kitchen Nightmares. The UK version is super chill, with Gordon simply trying to help struggling restaurant owners and the US version is SO dramatic and over the top that it's just ridiculous.
1 - I didn’t know there was an American version of Broadchurch.
2 - What is this fast editing ? Why is it so dramatic ?
3 - No bloody twitter.
So I've only seen a bit of the British show, and I did know there was an American version but.... for some reason... I literally always assumed he was still Scottish in the American version
I love David Tennant scottish accent because hes scottish
I'm not gonna lie, David's American accent for this scene in Gracepoint made it a bit more intimidating. At least in my opinion. No hate please
i think that a angry scot is more scary than an angry american
Connor O'Neill Especially when he's high on whisky lol
Ohh no god no David I'm sorry that American accent didn't do you any justice
oh my god ive never heard david tennants american accent im
like this mf raised me and now i learn he has a side hustle where he speaks in an american accent? im rattled
wtf this is awful news :(
god man why does america all that. wtf is up with them. god this sucks.
i bet this is how [REDACTED] felt when [REDACTED DUE TO HARMFUL CONTENT ASSOCIATED WITH ACUTE STRESS REACTIONS SUCH AS HEART ATTACKS, LIVER FAILURE, AND ANEURYSMS]
i still haven't replayed it and u know what? i will not. im gonna watch a hbomberguy video before i wilt away like a blossom retreating from the chill of late autumn
British version: Very closely shot, understated and realistic moment of tension delivered by a
AMERICAN VERSION: SWEEPING GRAND MUSIC!!!! CUTS AND EDITS AHOY!!!!! SCREAMING!!!!!! TTTEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAARRRRRSSSSSSS!!!! PHWOOOOOAAAAARRRR!!!
The difference between the two versions of The Office is really striking here.
