I loved seeing all of these shops. It's nice to see all the different vibes in the stores, yarn options, notions, etc. I would love to visit the shop with all of the natural yarn. The samples on that store blew me away. I live in the Chicago area and there is a yarn crawl here. I have only gone a couple of times to a handful of stores, but this video has inspires me to visit more shops next year.
Thanks for taking us along on the Yarn Discovery Tour - wow, there were so many fantastic shops featured! If you and Ned find yourselves in Chicago the last week of July/first week of August that is when the Chicago Yarn Crawl takes place! I think this year there were 19 shops featured; some in the city proper, but many in various suburbs. My favorite is Wool & Company in South Elgin - it's yarn heaven on earth!
We have an annual MidMichigan shop hop. 10$ passport. Free knitting or crochet pattern at each shop. A drawing for a gift certificate and lots of coupons. So much fun. Love my lys!
I love Holst! I buy it directly from Holst Garn online and get it very quickly. They also typically have several colors on sale on a rotating basis, and sell 500 gram cones as well as the little cakes. They have a few different fibers, but only sell fingering weight, so perfect for knitted sweaters. I also purchased shade cards so I know the colors I am choosing. The character of the yarn changes COMPLETELY after washing or blocking. A lot of the spinning oils are still in the yarn and come out during the final process. I'm really interested in what you think of the final fabric.
You looked like you were having so much fun, but I’m sure it was time and cost intensive, as you said. Thank you! I’m just one state over in Indiana, still new here… there is no yarn shop local to me, sadly, but I like the idea of looking in the greater area (including Ohio) for a yarn crawl like this and spending a weekend or a day visiting places. I liked so many of the shops you showcased… Oberlin is such a beautiful place and that shop was stunning! I still miss my local shops back in Berlin. I love Holst yarns, so glad you were able to get some! It gets much softer after washing. Don’t worry that there is still spinning oil on it, that washes out too!
Hi Mark, As one of the co-chairs of the Yarn Discovery Tour I want to thank you for the time & effort it took to visit all of the shops! Your video was so well done and I appreciate how you took the time to point out the highlights of each shop. Many of which I have never visited and it was a delight to get a peak inside. Well Done! P.S. I LOVE your Field Sweater!
Good morning world! Here I'm sitting at my kitchen table in Germany at 8:34 in the morning, enjoying my Saturday morning coffee and watching a tour through beautiful yarn shops in America that I will never visit in person. What a nice way to start the day. 😊
Same here :) Some more greetings from Germany. Now it is Saturday afternoon and I´m sitting here knitting and looking at yarn shops in Ohio. And I kinda wish to have some lys with so much of a community element to them here too.
Mark, thank you so much for this comprehensive tour of our 17 YDT local yarn shops. It was so great to see you in my shop and I really appreciated the lovely things you said. I hope you can come back some time soon. Also, your sweater is divine!
Hello I'm from Wales 🏴 During September I went to Yorkshire for a holiday and discovered the North Yorkshire yarn trail was running while there. So chuffed to get to meet a favorite yarn dyer and get some items she'd done for the trail!!
Mark, you did a great job showcasing all of the wonderful local yarn shops! I'm not sure how you managed to film while they were completely empty but it was great. When I discovered Holst Garn, I bought every pink and purple possible. It's great for colorwork and what I used for my one and only published pattern. It's finer than Jameison's and J&S so I have to go down a needle size but it creates beautiful colorwork and softens after blocking.
Fine Points is new to me, even as a lifelong east sider. I am definitely going to have to make a trip. I love button hunting! ❤ My LYS is The Artful Yarn, I am so happy you loved it for all the same reasons I do. They are so great there, and it is such a pleasant space to shop, knit, and chat.
Amazing! Thank you for doing this. I no longer live there, but I was amazed to learn about the two shops in my hometown! Now I know where to go when I visit!
I went on a yarn crawl before Covid here in Texas. Found some great shops but will probably not do it again. I managed to visit every shop but being Texas some of them were hours away! I love that you were greeted by a dog at Around the Table Yarns!
I just happened across this video. Was so glad to see a local. I have been to every city on the list. But as a newer crocheter I have never been to a LYS. I would like to try this tour next year.
Love seeing the show I took notes and will contact them to make purchases. My favorite shop was the all natural fibers. Lots of gray black brown and x white. No dyes. Thanks🎉
FYI one of my favorite parks for fall foliage is very near the shopping center in Olmsted: David Fortier. You have to go back there to check that out! Thanks for the tour 🙏
I have a skein of Bare Naked Wool that I bought somewhere a few years ago. I never knew they had a yarn shop! No I’ll have to dig it out and figure out the perfect project for that one precious skein. How lucky are you to have so many LYS in your area. ❤
Going with the train theme on one of your stops, if you haven't been down my way in Louisville Kentucky there is a quaint little town called LaGrange, the yarn shop is on Main street (Friends and Fiber). There are working train tracks going through Main street, if you visit there you will see a train go by. It's a small street so traffic has to stop when they come through. Thank you for this fun video.
Loved this video! Thanks for putting it all together... such a thoughtful way to acknowledge all of these shops equally (despite their differences) and support local! I'm new to yarn crafts (I only crochet for now) and this was so inspiring to go find a local (not big box) store where possible rather than shopping online which is what I've been doing
So we just had our yarn crawl here in the Charlotte area - we had 6 shops I was able to do all 6 in one day seeing as they only did the crawl for one week….. it was fun and I got to visit shops I’d never been too before - met up with some friends for lunch at a phenomenal Irish pub, so much fun I bought more notions at every shop….. Marcia K
Thank you for this information! I live in the northeast Ohio area too and some of those shops I have not been too. I frequent harps and thistles and the artful yarn. But great to see what else is available!😊
Thank you for this showcase of yarn stores in the area! I am from Pittsburgh and had no idea there were so many just a short drive away! Come visit our yarn crawl in the summer and visit our 11 yarn shops, you won't be disappointed! Steel Valley Yarn Crawl
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 that was fantastic! I am local to this area. I have always wanted to do the discovery tour, but I never get around to it. As you said it’s a lot of time and money. This was fantastic because now I will definitely try it next year- even if I get to some of the shops. My favorite was Bare Naked Wools! My heart skipped a beat when you showed inside the studio. I cannot get there in the near future, so I have an online order in my cart for fiber and patterns. The patterns are amazing. Thank you for sharing this. It was like I got to go on the tour.
Wow! I'm from Germany and trying hard not to get too envious of you. Soooo many yarn shops around!! Where I live, there are about 5-6 shops, and that's about it. I would so love going on a yarn tour similar to yours! It sounds like so much fun!! Thanks for sharing!
New York has a yarn crawl. I didn’t do it due to social anxiety. I have some lovely undyed wool from Barbara kingsolver’s sheep. I made gorgeous mittens with it. I love Brooklyn tweed. We have a store called Brooklyn general that is like cast on. The have like Brooklyn tweed, Myak, sea change. It’s so nice there.
Mark I just found your channel and I have watched 4 videos so far! I love you and your vibe! I was so excited to hear you are also in Ohio! I’m in southwest Ohio, in Dayton. If you ever do an Ohio tour, please stop in Dayton, I would love to meet you in person. ❤
Loved looking at all of your yarn crawl stores. We have a yarn crawl here in The Pacific Northwest. Ours is usually in the spring and it covers about 12 shops. Some have a dyer the with their special yarn. Others have patterns and the yarn to make these special crawl patterns. Each year the store run a theme around the crawl. I’ve done the crawl a few times. I recently did the Rose City Yarn Crawl last spring and had a great time. Thanks for the tour!
I did my first yarn crawl this year, in the Portland, OR area: Rose City yarn crawl. Due to family committments I could only visit 2 shops in person, and then one online. I hope to be able to see all the shops in the future.
I looove color but boy, there is something so soothing about the Bare Naked Wools store! It’s just like a deep breath of relaxation for the eyes! ❤ Thank you for the wonderful tours!
This was so much fun! I wish I had some of these shops close to me. I admired your restraint in your careful purchases! I’m not sure I could have been so wise. 😃
Hi from Wisconsin! I have several yarny events that happen near me. The Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival and the Madtown Yarn Shop Hop which happens this year next weekend. My lys is a super cute shop in Stoughton called Spry Whimsy. And two other stores I highly recommend are Sow’s Ear in Verona, and Susan’s Fiber Shop in Columbus, if you’re ever this way. :)
I'm so enjoying your video and exploring these shops through you. We have an annual yarn crawl in WNC the week leading up to Mother's Day. After Helene, I'm sure the stores would be happy for visitors at next year's crawl. 🧶
I live in the Texas Panhandle and there are no yarn crawls within driving distance. We only sometimes have a LYS in Amarillo and that is not very close to me. The shops you showed were beautiful.
Maine has an Annual Yarn Cruise . So much fun!. I usually get my passport at The Yarn Sellar in York Maine. I will be travelling to visit family in Cleveland this fall and will be sure to visit at least 3 of the shops you visited. Bare Naked Wools, Pearls Girls and Homestead Falls. Great video!!!
Ahhhh!!! We have one coming up near me from Oct 11-20th we get little passports, tote bags, patterns, prize drawings, etc. too! I live in Central TX. I'm a new crocheter and still very new to learning but I am going to participate and I am really excited! 😁🧶
Looks like fun! We have 2 "local" yarn shops. One is about an hour and 15 minutes up the side of the mountain and the other is almost an hour on the Freeway. Good thing I'm a slow knitter!
in the greater san francisco bay area/sacramento area (and can include satellite regions as well), we have a fair number of yarn shops! There's at least two? regional yarn crawls as well, too :) I might check out at least part of the bay area one next year.
Wow!! 17?! That amazing! We just had our local yarn crawl in San Diego. I went to all the stores that took part which were 4. Also 2 Alpaca Farms took part. This year I didn’t go to the farms. Both are really nice farms.
All I can say is, wow. What a fabulous adventure that would be. Thank you for showing us all those shops and describing the features and highlights. It makes me want to visit Ohio!!! I would LOVE to take some weaving classes (I have a loom and have done some weaving, but I am a true beginner) and spinning classes. Lord knows I don´t need to start a new craft but it does look like fun. Again, thanks for sharing!
I'm in Minneapolis and every spring we have a Shop Hop with about 12 shops. I haven't been yet but plan on it next year. Also, in August we had a PEEP progressive east end project. That included 7 shops, you buy a hank at each and get a mystery pattern at the end. Now also something I need to do next year. But wait! We also just our knitting guild annual retreat with a public marketplace with over 20 vendors. A mini ship hop! I feel spoiled with so many local options.
Regarding your question about yarn crawls in different regions: I live in Germany now but I'm from the Pacific Northwest, and there is a yarn crawl there (PNW Yarn Crawl) that features the yarn shop from my hometown, Ewe and I, in Chehalis Washington. Ewe and I is one of my favorite yarn shops I've been to in the world. Not only are they really friendly and inviting there, there is also in in-store café that serves amazing food, and the vibes are just so cozy. Highly recommend it if you're ever in the area!
Watching this in my little country The Netherlands, I wonder what is local to you? Since the state of Ohio is about 3 times the size of my whole country 🤭. I really enjoyed watching all the different stores. And totally understand your preferred to watch for notions, after all the yarn shopping you did during your trip to the UK. I prefer to buy my yarn in LYS, to support them and to feel the yarn before I buy it. Thank you for another nice video!
Hi Mark, I hope to visit the yarn shop in Vermillion Ohio and Oberlin OH. I would really like to look at the selection of Lola Bean yarn. I met the dyer at Wool and Folk!
wow! Thank you very much for documenting this tour. It's now my dream travel tour. I didn't even know things like this existed. I live in Quebec, Canada. That's far, but not so much. I'd love to visit all those shops.
That was fun I would love to do a yarn crawl. I live in Indiana and it's hard to even find yarn shops. We're kinda stuck with just joanne's for craft stuff. Really enjoyed watching you visit with the shops though how neat.
Hello from Melbourne Australia! It’s a rainy Sunday afternoon and I’m watching this lovely video! I just happen to have in front of me my newest paper pattern purchase, by Queensland Collection! It’s called “Kay” (a scarf) by Sandi Rosner. The myrtle yarn you bought looks amazing. The color is stunning.
Great video ... I was surprised to see the Queensland Collection featured. I live in Queensland and this is the first I've heard of this local product. Maybe that's my fault but I shall seek it out now. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video Mark! This looks like so much fun. I've been tempted to go on a "yarn crawl" in different parts of the state (I'm also from Ohio but in the SW area of the state). My LYS, "Lambikins" in Hamilton, Ohio is part of a yarn crawl in SW Ohio but I have yet to travel through all the shops. Maybe this next year! I was impressed with so many of the shops that you showed. I now want to go on my own little yarn crawl and visit so many of these shops. Thanks so much again. One of these day I do plan on getting to Cleveland to visit "Around the Table Yarns".
Hi, message from Sharon in Brighton England You are so lucky to have such wonderful yarn/craft shops! I only really have Hobbycraft, and some smaller outlets I belong to a Knitting Group near me, which I get to now and then. I am jealous!
Oh my gosh I didn't realize you were in my area. I haven't done YDT in quite some time, maybe 9 or 10 years now? But I still have yarn from the last few times I did it. 😂 It is fun to see some old favorites and check out some shops I'm not so familiar with these days. Around the Table is close to work but I struggle with anything near that one intersection in Shaker so I typically avoid Shaker altogether. I'll have to have Google map me out how to avoid it lol. I'll have to swing through Canton next time I'm at my dad's. And I never got into dance moms but anyone who says they don't love some version of trash tv is a liar lol.
Great video. I am so jealous. I live near Durango, Colorado and, unfortunately, we don’t have any local yarn shops nearby. I would have to drive about 4-5 hours north to visit a shop. Love the trinkets you got. 😊
17 shops is quite the yarn safari. I love yarn and notions and unique gift items but I really enjoy viewing the seating areas that shops offer their patrons. I like to imagine myself there hanging out with other makers and enjoying the atmosphere. (I would have liked to see the cats playing with their catnip balls. 😺)
Wow how fun to find a local on You Tube! I did the yarn tour quite a few years ago and enjoyed finding shops I didn't know existed. One was Designing Woman and another in Medina whose name I don't recall. River Colors is my LYS and I recently took some knitting lessons there as crochet is my first love. I also want to visit the shops in Elyria and Vermilion and with your influence I just may make it this year! Thank you for a well done video. Nice to see your cat too. 😺
Enjoyed joining you on this tour. Thanks. I guess they gave you early in or late out privileges to film since there were no people in the shops in your video? I love the community aspects of the shops where they have tables and gathering ares. Also intrigued by the shop that includes weaving.
This video must have taken you so much time to put together! Thanks for all the hard work. I'm not a native speaker of English and the word 'notions' was new to me. I now definitely know what it means :) As a minimalist, I try to avoid buying these things and use stuff that I already have in my home instead. Therefore I loved the video in which you keep your yarn in a sock to prevent it from tangling! But I appreciate the fact that you want to show the world what these shops are offering, yarn and non-yarn related. Thanks for the tour!
Hi. Mark. I just went on the local Garn Gang 2024 (yarn walk) in Hamburg, Germany, today. Keep fingers crossed for the raffle! Love your cats, style and information! Thank you!
We just finished the Great Tennessee Yarn Tour, it had shops from Knoxville, to almost Nashville, and of course Chattanooga. There were 18 shops involved. I can honestly say that out of the hundreds of people who were in the crawl, only one was a Debbie Downer. Each shop had their own hand dyed mini skeins, the tour guide book had patterns for the mini skeins. Currently is the North Alabama yarn crawl, not nearly as big, but, considering where we are located, it's good to be involved
Hello Mark, it's Saturday afternoon here in the UK. I very much enjoyed your yarn shop tour and I'm quite envious of all those beautiful stores, especially those with big tables for crafters to come and sit at. I have only one tiny yarn shop local to me and much as I love it and try to visit and buy there when possible, its stock is limited and I do a fair amount of yarn buying online. I loved seeing all your purchases too, I have some Emma Ball notions myself and use her little tins for keeping them in. Thanks for taking the time to film and share.
Hi Mark - I love yarn crawls! Often visited local yarn shops when I traveled for work, Thanks for such a comprehensive tour. Now I need to get to Ohio. Knit in good health! xx, @Professor Purl. PS that blue set would make a gorgeous brioche scarf/shawl 🙂
Wowza! 17 yarn shops and really different vibes. As much as I love color, the most memorable shop was Bare Naked Wools. Undyed fibers are so beautiful and that shop had visual impact and the samples that contained ever so slight bits of muted colors...beautiful. Thank you so very much for MORE great tours! BTW Mark, I purchased one of my most treasured notions (the Tulip magnetic tapestry needle keeper) after watching one of your videos. It is a tidy little lifesaver. I use it daily. Again, thank you for all the great info!
Love your podcast. I live right across from you over Lake Erie in Canada. I found your show a few weeks ago and love it. You have a very quiet relaxing voice. I am in awe of how good your knitting is
I just found your channel today. RUclips recommended you! I dont knit yet, but I want to learn. This tour has me wanting to go check out yarn shops local to me in Houston. I do all the other fiber arts, cross stitch, rug hook and punch and sew but never learned to knit or crochet. Excited to check out more of your videos! Are there any youtube channels you recommend to learn to knit?
This was really interesting to watch. I love how you have access to so many wonderful unique yarn shops. Also a little bit jealous, as the part of the UK I live in has no local yarn shops, and only one chain store which has a very small amount of yarn in! Also - what pattern is the jumper with the leaf pattern on the neckline? It's gorgeous and I might need to learn how to knit well just to make it!!
Mark, Mark, Mark! I want to make a special trip just for this yarn crawl! Okay, oh my goodness! Now, just finishing the video. I am just south of Portland, Oregon and we used to have numerous shops in our Yarn Crawl. Unfortunately, between the internet and Covid many, many of our yarn shops have closed! As far as picking a favorite store on your tour . . .how would someone do that! All the stores were gorgeous! And after watching all the way to the end . . .just like you said, each shop is so special! The company I work for is in Ohio, and I will be calling my boss on Monday saying, I need to come to Ohio! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful yarn tour!
I live in the area but have Never ventured to some of the more distant shops, so thanks for this! River Colors has been my go to shop for many years even though I have lived in different cities in the Cleveland area. They are indeed a shop with everything as well as knowledgeable staff. 😊
If you are in the Dallas/Ft Worth area in late April - early May, we will be having our 14th annual North Texas Yarn Crawl. There are usually at least a dozen local yarn shops participating each year. Some are really spread out through the region, so the Dallas Hand Knitters Guild will charter a bus to tour some of the outlying shops. Having retired since the last yarn crawl, I’m looking forward to having the time to check out the locations outside of the immediate DFW Metroplex.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make and share this video. I was very excited to see the Bared Naked Yarns shop. I am from NJ and will be attending Rhinebeck (Sun only) and my main goal is to see the Bare Naked Yarns booth. I have a specific sweater in mind which I believe that their yarn would be perfect for. Seeing their brick and mortar shop with all the beautiful yarns just heightened my excitement. Thanks again for another wonderful video.
Hey Mark, that was great! I visited Three Sheep, Gwen Erin and Designing Woman with our friend Elfriede. At Three Sheep, the owner invited us to sit down and share a homemade meall of pasta fazool-what a special treat! All 3 stores were fabulous. I bought spinning fiber-Cormo!-at Gwen Erin, and some pink denim at Desining Woman to make a project bag!!
Thank you for this wonderful video! My friend and I sped through the tour this year (17 shops in 3 days 🤪) but we decided to spread it out over 4 days next year. I’m thinking 5-6 leisurely days is even better! You provided such a wonderful perspective and view point. I’m so glad I found your video! ❤️🧶
Incredible video Mark!! You are a natural. I think the natural yarns shop was stunning. I love color, but a shop dedicated to so many beautiful neutrals in natural, pure fibers, plus with so many samples?? I can't. I might need to get on a plane and fly to Ohio. ❤
Mark thank you for taking me on this beautiful tour while I’m sitting here in Florida surrounded by tropical depressions waiting to turn into hurricanes. You are my port in a storm. Love this video. Beautiful yarns. I was surprised at the different colors of yarn that bare naked wools had to offer. Beautiful!!
Great summary of the shops and what the tour is like! I’ve been shopping the yarn discovery tour for 5 years now. It makes me look forward to September!
I loved seeing all of these shops. It's nice to see all the different vibes in the stores, yarn options, notions, etc. I would love to visit the shop with all of the natural yarn. Good morning world! Here I'm sitting at my kitchen table in Germany at 8:34 in the morning, enjoying my Saturday morning coffee and watching a tour through beautiful yarn shops in America that I will never visit in person. What a nice way to start the day. 😊
the same here!. Ich komme auch aus Deutschland und schaue mir wunderschöne Wollgeschäfte in der USA an wo ich wohl niemals live hingehen kann :-)
Same here :) Some more greetings from Germany. Now it is Saturday afternoon and I´m sitting here knitting and looking at yarn shops in Ohio. And I kinda wish to have some lys with so much of a community element to them here too.
Same for me, I'm in Bavaria! Zum Glück haben wir in Bayern auch wunderschöne Wollläden :)
Mark, thank you so much for this comprehensive tour of our 17 YDT local yarn shops. It was so great to see you in my shop and I really appreciated the lovely things you said. I hope you can come back some time soon. Also, your sweater is divine!

Knoxville TN had a yarn crawl when I lived there. You could plan a visit to see family during that time. If I remember correctly it was in August.

I'm in love with Bare Naked Wools. Definitely need to make a trip to Cleveland to visit Bare Naked Wools and Three Sheep.
Greetings from Hannover in Germany. All the wool shops are wonderful.
Wissen Sie, ob es solche Wollladentoure auch in Deutschland gibt? Ich wohne in Chiemgau, Bayern.
Thank you!
I love the sweater you are wearing.
in the greater san francisco bay area/sacramento area (and can include satellite regions as well), we have a fair number of yarn shops!
I love the sweater you are wearing!
So excited to see you went to Gwen Erin I buy a lot of their dyed roving for spinning.
So lucky! After Covid, the San Diego county (California) has only 5 shops…but one is an Alpaca Mill!
Great video
... I was surprised to see the Queensland Collection featured. I live in Queensland and this is the first I've heard of this local product. Maybe that's my fault but I shall seek it out now. Thanks!
You know.. I may have seen you shopping at River Color Studio's once..! But, this was before I've seen you on YT. LOL, small world it is..!
Hi, message from Sharon in Brighton England
You are so lucky to have such wonderful yarn/craft shops! I only really have Hobbycraft, and some smaller outlets
I belong to a Knitting Group near me, which I get to now and then. I am jealous!
it was exciting to see shops that are within an hour drive from me!
Thank you this was fun I would really like to go to Bare Naked I love the idea of natural color wool
Now I need to visit all of them online! 😂
Love the tour. Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for this tour! I've gotten so much joy from visiting these shops via my armchair. Great job!
Thank you for this wonderful tour. I don't have a local yarn shop, so it was lovely to see them all. And the towns were really lovely as well.
Well that was fun!
So many wonderful shops! The Harps & Thistle struck me as so Celtic!
Thanks for bringing us along.
That was great!
Enjoyed joining you on this tour. Thanks. I guess they gave you early in or late out privileges to film since there were no people in the shops in your video? I love the community aspects of the shops where they have tables and gathering ares. Also intrigued by the shop that includes weaving.
Only at Around the Table! I just filmed around people at the other shops 😺
I am in awe of how good your knitting is
you've become my comfort channel! you are so amazing Mark
Good morning from Chennai, Southern India where I only found 2 LYS that I support regularly. Thanks for this yarn tour, it was lovely and inspiring 🙏
I live in the area but have Never ventured to some of the more distant shops, so thanks for this! River Colors has been my go to shop for many years even though I have lived in different cities in the Cleveland area. They are indeed a shop with everything as well as knowledgeable staff. 😊
thank you for putting so much work into this video~ it is amazing. Great yarn tour- thanks for bringing us along!
Mark, thanks for tour, loved it. How did you manage to film without another customer in shop 😂???
I have nothing that sales yarn near me. If I travel over an hour we have a Wal-mart. I really enjoyed this video
Thank you, a delightful tour you did :-) from Australia
Thanks Mark for this video. I love the long table in the middle of shop at Around the Table. The tour was great too!
My fave was the natural fibers place. So cool!
Another great video,Mark!Thank you for taking us along so many wonderful yarn shops!❤😊
