Tatemae /Honne thing is so real. When I first moved back to Japan, I was like why is everyone so nice and friendly? Then I realized they are all in customer facing jobs and i guess that's how they are trained, as in trained to never show any negative emotions and just smile and be friendly even when you are physically and mentally exhausted and stressed from working long hours.
@@littenfire3563 So does every other country? What part of the world you think has people say whatever they think? Most, if not all countries has the same concept. NZ, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Phillipines. What kind of functioning Society lives without it? People White Lie all the time do they not? The only difference, is Japan has a word for it, and people like to exaggerate all things foreign to them. Do you know how incredibly degrading it is for someone, if all their genuine emotions were all thought to be fake by a foreigner? Pretty unfortunate for Japan, s Besides, what kind of shop has rude service anyways, everywhere in the world wed all be fired if we showed our negative emotions. I'd rather have the Honne and Tatemae. Never have pre concieved ideas of a culture, ever. This is so overplayed istg, no wonder people complain about it all the time. Its literally ALL they think about when they go to Japan.
@@emchou3 in the U.S., you may or may not get friendly customer service - it depends on the place you shop and how the employees were trained and just the employee themself and their personality. Even if it makes sense that they should be polite, respectful, and courteous because they serve customers, it doesn’t always happen - especially if it’s a place where their income doesn’t depend on tips. So for people from the U.S., a culture that encourages public politeness and the majority (or all) the people actually do it, it’s very noteworthy to us. Our culture is kind of the opposite, being an individual and authentic to yourself is considered more important than keeping thing’s peaceful for the society as a whole. It can be good because people feel more comfortable expressing their individuality but also bad because of things like people feeling the right to say whatever rude or mean thing their thinking to you in public spaces.
This is good for BW to see, especially the young black girls. Too long BW have limited themselves to black culture and men. BW open your mind and your options.
I loved visiting Japan! I didn't feel any kind of racism and it was really peaceful even at night the streets were quite and I felt safe. I would love to live there!
You may want to do a collaboration with Cathy Kat. She is also a foreigner who lives in Japan. She does collaborations every so often with the other RUclipsrs who are living in Japan, both Japanese, and gaijin. Nice walk down some streets I have not been to in a while!! I do miss Japan. I was stationed there in the Navy for many years off and on. I love the people and the culture. You are right about knowing some Japanese conversation. What little I knew got me into a lot of places that were not normally open to gaijin. I also made a lot of good friends.
It's definitely not like China. People tried to make the excuse that all the staring is because of the country (China) being monoracial but other monoracial countries don't do all that staring....
People are looking at you because they can see someone filming you as you walk around. They’re probably wondering what’s going on ( A TV show? Someone famous ? Etc)
When you said " if your from Baltimore, Maryland like me" I nearly yelled out and I'm in the gym right now. 😅 Same here, born and raised now living in Londo, UK for the past 8 yrs. Honestly I envy you I still adore Japan. Can't wait to visit and wish I could speak as well as you do. I'll definitely be following you from now. Thanks. Kind Regards, Brand.
People don’t realize that how you look is also a factor in how people will treat you. She’s a very attractive girl so of course she would have nice experiences.
?? So you think you had bad experiences because you're ugly? What do you even mean by that? Being pretty actually makes you be the "center of attention" and that attention can easily turn into sexual harassment. And beauty standards differ from race to race, so I wouldn't say she is nowhere near a beauty standard in Japan, she's just an average looking woman probably everywhere. But either way, what can make people have bad experiences are mainly being unaware of your surroundings and/or looking like an easy target (looking down, having earphones on, being thin, short, a woman, being very young or very old, being alone, etc). So nothing necesarily related to beauty. Your comment just makes you seem like you are jelous and are trying to find excuses. I've mostly heared good comment about Japan from different races, both sex's and people with different "levels" of beauty (to put it in a way).
@@mile_851 they mean if your "ugly" or "average," you're going to have a bad experience possibly, especially if your foreign Though I'm not sure if that's true, it depends person to person .. And it doesn't sound like and excuse to me
@@mile_851 I think what this person meant is the physical factors that go into what makes or breaks your experiences in foreign places. Every place has a certain beauty standard and what is considered to be outliers in any culture. Sometimes it is weight, someone who is thin might be considered more attractive than someone who is Fat. Sometimes it is style. Sometimes it is hair. Sometimes people are just outright racist and or ignorant. In any case physical attributes do play into experience and it isn’t necessarily a bad thing as you are implying right now. It’s just reality. Others just need to be aware that this could be a possibility when traveling and to prepare themselves for it.
I would love to go to Japan I'm planning on taking the language here at Orange Coast College. When I was in the first grade my white teacher selected me out of all the other students to Don the kimono she was teaching us Asian culture. She was a well traveled lady Miss daily was and she really loved Japan and imported it to us Urban children. Nevertheless it did create a sort of teacher's pet mantra in my studies causing me to be envy by other students whom she never hardly ever picked only me for days on end while we studied. Your dissertation and your narrative is very special and your point of view is without guile and Malice which is I think a great representation of Japanese culture. My favorite culinary dish of the moment or Japanese fried chicken wings yummy delicious thank you for your videos.

The guy who came back and asked for your channel is handsome and seemed open to going further. I get it though, people can be mean. Same here in America 👍🏽
@@EnimsLifeinJapan Sadly not everyone thinks this way, in my country, the majority of foreigners don't want to learn the language at all and don't want to adapt in any way, they make it difficult for the natives to respect them the way they want too and always play the victim when something doesn't turn out the way they hoped for, eventually they get what they want, which causes our own native culture to change to sh*t.
i always get so anxious walking in public in Okinawa not bc of my skin color (tan and im mexican American) but because of my inability to keep the peace in social crowds. To me it’s hard not to stare at things and i often want to stare at people and see the stores behind them. but people here I assume get so shy and avoid eye contact and i get so nervous thinking I’m making them uncomfortable. I also have a hard time being comfortable and i don’t enjoy my time out as much as I want too. I keep walking too fast so I don’t slow someone down but i really want to look at the details of the scenery and take my time.
Yeah foreigners can be really rude.. though I did notice also some Asian (not sure if Japanese) men checking their pockets as if I pick pocketed them even though I am standing more than 6 feet away from them 🤦🏾♂️
I am Japanese and my husband is black American. Funny thing is he tells me that he often is stared by foreigners in Japan whereas most Japanese people usually mind their own business(Some people do look, but not disrespectfully). Particularly as a black man, there seems to be an implicit pressure to acknowledge each other with a head nod. The first time he walked around in Japan, a black man riding a bicycle passed by him and gave him a head nod. My husband, unaware of this unspoken rule, didn't nod back. The man on the bicycle then deliberately turned around and demanded a "black man's greeting." Ever since, he has been careful to return the gesture.
Hey! Thank you so much! :)🥰 I was told the same growing up. Not just in Japan, I've found similar pleasant experience abroad in general. Happy travels!
Can you please do a video for individuals who are planing to visit Japan for a week. Ideas on Hotels, Restaurants, shopping areas maybe even a price break down for a week stay in Japan. Please and thank you
It was uncomfortable for me. I felt violated in a way. Because people say “ohhhh it’s because they’re curious” “they’re fascinated”. Hello, Tokyo is a huuuuge city and has many black foreigners come through. We’re way past our presence being shocking. Sure, that may be true for some people, but not the majority of creepy men. I’ve had men approach me with inappropriate comments, lick their lips at me while gawking, etc. A man re-enacted the Scream painting at me on a train. People have reacted to me like they’re scared or grossed out 😂 All while I’d be smiling, minding my own, dressed formally (dress pants, t-shirt, blazer or long coat, basic makeup, long curly hair). And agreed that other foreigners also do the same. If anything, I was angry and annoyed at people making misleading guides and videos about these issues not being so apparent lol. So, it’s not that it doesn’t happen or is rampant, it’s just more subtle/quietly done in Japan compared to other countries. Now, did this ruin my entire visit? No, creeps/racists are everywhere. I did notice, however, this was usually the older generation of people that all reacted this way towards me; pre gen-x made the trip amazing! Especially in Kyoto, so many incredible people approached me and wanted me to hang out with them and take me to shows/hangout spots and get to know each other. All I can say to anyone black and going to Japan, don’t expect the worst obviously but also don’t expect heaven. If anything, keep a tough skin, hold your head up, and have a good time. It’s too rich and dense of a population and culture to make assumptions about your individual experience.
When Japanese men are lascivious, they are extremely lascivious . They themselves show that many of them tend to be like this though to the manga and anime that we see, lol
I would LOVE to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. I’d have such a hard time adjusting to the culture and making friends or dating. I’d never fall in love out there. But I’d love to visit and learn some of the language and culture
When talking about the scams and the dangerous places and saying “if you from Baltimore that's debatable”.... I felt that being someone from Baltimore 😂
I experience the same thing when I went to India. People would just stare at me . I guess it is because they have not seen a black person. Kudos to you for learning the language
From a fellow foreigner living in Japan for 40+ years congratulations on the nice video. Yes we (all foreigners) get starred at (not as much as in the old days) but I think the Japanese are staring at you because you are a very pretty girl. Keep up the good work😀
Girl that group of 3 guys u stopped were so cute...u are so brave to go up to a group of guys I would've been so nervous and shy to go up to them especially cuz they're cute
I think it depends on where you live or visit in Japan. Major cities like Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka (e.g., places with a million+ people) as a foreigner you'll largely go unnoticed. Of course there will be a few that give you a double take, but it doesn't happen all day long. Go to a small town like Shirakawa in Gifu prefecture then yes, you'll likely get some looks. I worked with a couple of black colleagues in Sapporo. We would frequently go out to dinner. By and large we went unnoticed walking around town or at restaurants. Japanese people are generally pretty busy with their own lives and focused on their own daily tasks. For these reasons gawking at foreigners is not a high priority. As for speaking Japanese, I found that Japanese people like it when they hear a foreigner speak their language. Even if you hack it up, the effort made is appreciated.
It's so unusual for a girl from B'more to go and live in Japan! I think it's wonderful personally. I would never have guessed you were from B'more! 🇬🇧👍🏾UK

I find that so ironic that other foreigners are saying racial things when they are outsiders too 😂. I guess people will do anything to keep or create a hierarchy no matter where they go.
@@soulspirationgoddess it's because they're allowed to without repercussions. They can get away with saying and doing racist stuff they can't do in their own countries. Which I wouldn't care💅🏾 treat them the same way. you don't have to hang around them if you don't want to

I've always wanted to go to Japan. Simply because I am obsessed with Japanese culture, the food, the traditions, the language etc. But I have grown a fear of going simply because I am a black woman. I won't let that stop me though, I only have one life and I will experience the joys of Japan, because I know that not everyone there has hatred towards me. I am sure their are lovely people. Micro agressions, racism etc isn't going to stop me from having fun. I will continue to study Japanese culture and language and continue to learn and respect the country in all it's flaws and beauty. At the same time I feel like because black people stand out that's why they stare, it might not necessarily be racism I'm not sure. But I love Japan with my heart and I can't wait to go there one day.
Hmm I’m really glad to hear how you perceive Japan 😁 I think generally you were able to notice their real feelings when a lot of foreigners miss it. Thanks to that, you’re having good experiences! You said that your brain is working differently when you’re in a different country, but I know many people who couldn’t cross the line into that area. So I’m just very happy for you that you were able to see that what other foreigners are saying isn’t that true and to cross that line yourself and enjoy yourself a deserved and fun experience :) (Interestingly, when watching an Arabs in Japan interview, I realized this is what most of them also experienced. Maybe Arabs in Japan can relate to you)
Haha.. I'm so guilty of the staring at other foreigners thing. My husband said that he thought I knew every foreigner in Japan because I always look and smile at them. I have probably made so many people uncomfortable, oops 😬. I think it's the comradery for me, like if you have a bad day at the yakusho etc.. and you see another foreigner.. I'm like "They get it.. they know" Haha. 🤣
My friend is in Japan right now, she has been texting me since she got there about how much they ALL stare the shit out of her. Is staring at people considered polite in Japan or what? Everyone keeps talking how respectful and elegant they are. Don’t they know staring is incredibly rude?
Thank you for taking the time to create this video! Though I do not hear many stories of racism there, I have read some stories of foreigners not allowed in some stores and the stalking issues women go through in Japan which makes me hesitant to visit.

Irony of you being stared at by foreign people like you're the stranger when you're a stranger just as much as they are as like really okay and I'm not saying you're stranger cuz I don't know if you've lived there now but you know what I'm saying
I recently subscribed to this channel and I’m loving your content! As a black American female your content is making me feel better about visiting Japan someday :)
Thank you so much! I hope you get over here soon. :D
@@EnimsLifeinJapan always and anytime and hope to and can't wait be in japan later this year and meet ya 😃💯👍

Hahaha Hey!! I actually addressed this in my next video today. :) Yes, I believe that is the reason too. But this is just personal opinion.
Oh my god you guys takes the tatemae/honne thing way too seriously
It's literally part of their culture Emjo
@@littenfire3563 So does every other country? What part of the world you think has people say whatever they think?
Most, if not all countries has the same concept. NZ, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Phillipines. What kind of functioning Society lives without it? People White Lie all the time do they not?
The only difference, is Japan has a word for it, and people like to exaggerate all things foreign to them.
Do you know how incredibly degrading it is for someone, if all their genuine emotions were all thought to be fake by a foreigner? Pretty unfortunate for Japan, s
Besides, what kind of shop has rude service anyways, everywhere in the world wed all be fired if we showed our negative emotions.
Black women are beautiful
China and korea beauty standards is insane compare to Japan. They worship white skin more.
Thanks.

The guy she gave her business card to is def trying to take her out ☺️
For sure. He was very good looking.
You're so pretty

Hold up, did sis include boy asking for her number and then gave him her business card? 😭😭 I’m hollering
People don’t realize that how you look is also a factor in how people will treat you. She’s a very attractive girl so of course she would have nice experiences.
Truee
Japan is not korea that very care for looks
@@mile_851 they mean if your "ugly" or "average," you're going to have a bad experience possibly, especially if your foreign
Though I'm not sure if that's true, it depends person to person ..
Others just need to be aware that this could be a possibility when traveling and to prepare themselves for it.
i live in japan i don’t feel like i ever get stared at in an unfriendly way. everyone is so friendly
So grateful for your channel. Moving to Japan soon and I’m excited to hear your balanced perspective ❤
Could also be because you're not wearing a mask in public in Japan when most of the other pedestrians are wearing one.
Many japanese people don't always wear a mask in public. What's the big deal?
I don't know how or why you popped up but I'm so happy you did! New subscriber here 😃😄 I am also a black woman and I was raised in Japan. I miss it sooo much and wish I could go back! I didn't know racisim until I had moved to Texas. I was very hard for me when I was younger and living in the US. Very different from Japan. I've had a urge to learn Japanese again😍
Same 😂
I like these videos. We get a feel of the area, learn cultural differences, and even some Japanese (language).
I'm glad you like it! I'm working on storing up more interviews for the main channel. So, I'll be back over there soon. :)
Americans love to judge other countries as if their country is a beacon of perfection 😂
The guy who came back and asked for your channel is handsome and seemed open to going further. I get it though, people can be mean. Same here in America 👍🏽
You're so gorgeous! I would love to visit Japan as a black American woman
How did u learn Japanese
Trying for years, but get discouraged and busy with life
Love there culture and anime
I lived in Germany for 20 years. I can say speaking the language of the land. Are the golden keys
Yes! This! Adapt to the culture and you'll gain the respect of the people. Thank you for your comment.
Are you a pure japanese, was born in Japan? I thought japanese people didn't like to have a relationship with black people, specially women.
I'm more so worried about going there as a plus size woman. I know weight is a big thing
Hello my fellow baltimorean,
Japan seems to be a lot safer then here. Love your videos
Well hello there! 😃 It is! :)
I’m a new subscriber. I love your channel. I was always told that the Japanese people hated us (Black Americans). Your channel is opening my eyes.
Hey! Thank you so much! :)🥰 I was told the same growing up. Not just in Japan, I've found similar pleasant experience abroad in general. Happy travels!
Check out the Kuro Kouch channel, and Black Experience Japan channel....,
How do you guys take care of your hair in Asia? I’m genuinely curious.
Can you please do a video for individuals who are planing to visit Japan for a week. Ideas on Hotels, Restaurants, shopping areas maybe even a price break down for a week stay in Japan. Please and thank you
Yes, please. Thank you.
Going to Japan is literally my dream I really want to go there and enjoy the culture and the life there
You are gorgeous 🥰
So how are you adjusting to Tokyo hun?
I’m going to Japan next year. I love your videos and it encouraged me to set up my trip
I'm so glad! Thank you! Happy travels!
When talking about the scams and the dangerous places and saying “if you from Baltimore that's debatable”.... I felt that being someone from Baltimore 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hey, hon!
I experience the same thing when I went to India. People would just stare at me . I guess it is because they have not seen a black person. Kudos to you for learning the language
No suprise so many black people living Japan and speakin Japanese 😉
From a fellow foreigner living in Japan for 40+ years congratulations on the nice video. Yes we (all foreigners) get starred at (not as much as in the old days) but I think the Japanese are staring at you because you are a very pretty girl. Keep up the good work😀
So inspiring to see another person from Baltimore living good fr

Girl that group of 3 guys u stopped were so cute...u are so brave to go up to a group of guys I would've been so nervous and shy to go up to them especially cuz they're cute
Amazing keep the content flowing! You'll be big in no time.
Thank you! :)
🇬🇧👍🏾UK
Hi! Actually, the crazy thing is, I keep running into people from Maryland. I have no idea what inspired so many of us to all come to Japan, but I can't get over it! I really want to find that common link to so many of us being here.
Omg that Man staring at your assets 😂 smh 🤦♂️
Obviously hasn’t seen a beautiful black woman before.
Love your content Gal! Props to your for living in japan for eight years!!
It's mostly other foreigners who say race stuff
This has been my experience, and why I titled these videos as such. Living in Japan, it’s very easy to forget about my ‘race’.
Which I wouldn't care💅🏾 treat them the same way. you don't have to hang around them if you don't want to
比べるのは辞めて下さい。アメリカや欧州の問題を日本に持ち込み、カメラで試すのはもう我慢できません。
I know this is a weird comment... but you have a beautiful walk! I messed up my Achilles recently and it's been affecting how I walk, so it's something random I notice much more than I used to in others! Thank you so much!!
I hate these videos nothing is going to happen expect a few stares
I wanna live in Japan when I’m older! Like 20 or older. But I’m afraid of everything like speaking the language and the money issue. And I would have to get use to the stops and stuff. But I really want to live in Japan! Could you or anyone give me advice on what to do to make that happen?
Sure! I'll put it in an upcoming video, but I'm sorry it'll have to wait until maybe February. I'll post in the Community tab before I upload a video on how I was able to have my living expenses completely free my first 4 months in Japan. ☺️

Checked out a few of your videos and enjoyed them to the point that I subscribed. I've been to Japan several times for word and enjoyed the times that I was there. When I lived in Panama, I flew my dad down for a visit, and when I lived in Germany I flew my mom over for a visit. The both loved their trips.
Hi, thanks so much for being here and subbing. :) I'm glad both of your parents could visit too. It's so great that you could do that. 🥳

Start learning the language now so you'll be prepared.
You moved from Baltimore to Japan. That’s quite a jump. I’m from south Baltimore and when love that.
WOW! A FLOATING CAMERA! WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS?
Hey, you must be new here. I show how we record this video here: ruclips.net/video/_mToBWzs8Sw/видео.html
Great video, I’m glad I stumbled upon it! 😄 I’ll be staying in Tokyo for a week next month and the language barrier is starting to make me nervous (all I can say is “hello,” “thank you,” “excuse me,” and “where is the bathroom” lol). But I can’t wait! Subscribed! 😁
Safe travels and best of luck! If you try to speak people are generally pleased ☺️
Wow just found your channel and I can’t stop watching. Your videos are interesting and cool. I will soon be stationed in Japan this makes me even more excited being someone of color, to see how ppl react/treat you. Honestly it seems better than the states.
Try walking in sweden as a swedish blonde girl. Now thats risky. 😮💨😓
I think its your beauty first they see.
As a black woman I like your big eyes 👀 similar to mine
Whenever I think of Japan & traveling there? It always gives me social anxiety just by thinking about being stared at… just for being Hispanic.
But I do hope I learn Japanese this year and get to travel with my friends soon👀❤️beautiful country
I am set to have a grandchild in March, to be born Okinawa. I would like to visit for a couple months or longer maybe work if I can find work while I’m there. I want to interact with the natives and experience true Japan. I also have a seven year old that will be traveling with me. I was thinking to homeschool as I’m not sure about how or if he would be able to attend school there or any other option. We have learned a few phrases.😊 Do you have any tips or recommendations as my daughter is military and hasn’t made many connections so I sort of on my own here 😊

I was recommended your channel and I just have to say I already love it !! You earned a new sub from me ❤
Thank youuuuu! :D
Totally unrelated but she’s so so pretty!!
I think people are more concerned about you walking around being recorded like a celebrity, and want to know who you are more than anything else. Youre walking around being recorded like you are on some TV show
The camera is partially hidden on the backpack of her partner when she’s walking around behind him. Whens she’s interviewing there is a separate camera.
Awe you’re so freakin cute. I’m from Baltimore too. Born and raised. ❤❤❤
They would stare at me …and think I’m a sumo wrestler 😂😂😂 so they would just stare at me 😂
Hmm I’m really glad to hear how you perceive Japan 😁 I think generally you were able to notice their real feelings when a lot of foreigners miss it. Thanks to that, you’re having good experiences! You said that your brain is working differently when you’re in a different country, but I know many people who couldn’t cross the line into that area. So I’m just very happy for you that you were able to see that what other foreigners are saying isn’t that true and to cross that line yourself and enjoy yourself a deserved and fun experience :)
(Interestingly, when watching an Arabs in Japan interview, I realized this is what most of them also experienced.
Thank you
So the slurping the noodles thing isn’t true? I feel like I’ve heard Japanese people say that
Hi, They slurp noodles but it’s not to thank the chef or anything.
Happy New Year and great video.
I'm so glad to see your channel growing 🙌🏾 💓
Thank you 🥰
Fun and interesting vid as always 😃💯👌
Thank you, Servo! :D
😍 the guy at 2:23 is so gorgeous!!
