On their fourth album, New York black metal outfit delivers roughly the same sound they've been working with for the previous three. However, despite the lack of shockingly new ideas, the band proves to hold a lot of compositional power in the methodically fine-tuned progressive black metal style they've made their calling card.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Years Past Matter is my favorite album by Krallice. I wish they'd rerelease it. 10/10
Hey, heads up that represses/remasters are happening if you happen to be interested still.
@@InfamousQwaQwaFruit Anywhere in particular you can find them? I fucking love this album and it would make my month to own it on vinyl.
@@pretty.noodles3540 on their Bandcamp or through Gilead Media's website!
@@pretty.noodles3540 I found an early pressing for 5 bucks at my local shop before I even knew about the band. I bought it on a whim because of the cover. Absolutely bonkers thinking back on it.
Extremely consistent band. I would give a 9/10 but I love this band ALOT.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Glad you liked it too
Excellent review! The "hipster" tag on USBM bands isn't a label that should be taken seriously but if you were to take it seriously, Krallice wouldn't be involved. I feel as though they are some of the most innovative musicians in black metal today. And they are without any gimmicks, manifestos, or high strung opinions that have plagued Liturgy; they're transcendental without having to come out and say that they are.
Throwback to 9 years ago when I was 15 discovering what is now one of my favorite metal albums of all time 👌
Late gang here, that last chord that Cal played at 0:18 was actually really nice.
Anthony, i know you probably hear this a lot, but i honestly can't thank you enough for what you do. If it wasn't for you i would have never known bands and artists like Kvelertak, Kids & Explosions, Gonjasufi, MF Doom, and Neutral Milk Hotel. I know i'm not the only one who really appreciates this channel and we would like to thank you for it.
I only just found these guys in the past month or so, after The review of Imperial Triumphant. None of my friends or co-workers dive into this kind of stuff, and while my fiancé loves metal, anything touching black metal or extreme isn’t her thing. I love when you review bands like this that don’t seem to stride into Metal’s mainstream. It’s mainly Whitechapel or Bad Wolves around my circle, so your introducing me to this stuff is heavily appreciated. I’ve been so into Colin Marston’s work and just can’t get enough. Any other recommendations are heavily appreciated!!
I know this is an old comment, but you should check out some of Mick Barr's old stuff if you haven't already! Orthrelm is amazing. Ov is such a trip of an album
Beastlor is super cool too
Most complex yet rewarding album I've heard in a long time.
Stonedthony Doobtano
I couldn't agree more, although I do love the fact that their music takes so long to fully digest. It seems to add more of a connection to the listeners who dedicate themselves to understanding it. Also, love the Harmonicraft vinyl behind you! :p
Aesthetica and Marrow of the Spirit in the top right hand corner, nice.
i'm happy to hear it. :-)
Keep doing what you're doing, man. Forever.
This album wasn't hard for me to ge into even when I'm not a massive black metal fan, I've loved this album since the first time I've listened it
Great analysis Anthony. You are right, this is a very dense and intricate album. I love it now, but it took me a good 5-10 listens before i really began to FEEL it. While the guitars are up front in the production, they will hand off the 'drive' of the song to some interesting drum or bass moments (ie the bass arpeggios you mention). For this reason it takes a handful of spins to know what to listen for - if a song is a roadmap, then Krallice is taking alternate routes simultaneously.
cant wait to get the vinyl
This album cover intriged me beyond belief. At first I was like "What the hell? What a crappy photo of a nebula, too simple low resolution..." but after sometime looking at it on a bigger resolution, I can see it may be, in fact, a close up photo of a heavily rusted metal surface, but I can't be sure...
+UmCaralnteressante isn't it just lava?
You should review Dodecahedron's self titled. It's some of the best new black metal I've heard.
I've never been a fan of this so called "Black metal" and so brutal music, until bands like those you compare this with, specially Liturgy, came along. I guess it was the lo-fi production what was holding me back, because being able to hear this kind of sound with a good production, making it sound so thick yet so clear, being able to hear whats happening has been a thrill really. And the end of the tracks, the "band rehearsing" feel just blows my mind.
i actually used to hate krallice then i felt compelled like a year later to listen to it again and i really loved some parts of diotima and the s/t album but i never enjoyed an album from start to finish. until now. agreeing with you on the rating, possibly my album of the year with the post-rock leech.
Dis my favorite album
great lecture dude, keep doing what you do
Woah! you mentioned Weakling at 3:08!
+ 30 respect points!
Thanks for reviewing one of my suggestions. Really enjoyed this album, though I've loved everything Krallice has ever put out. The biggest improvement on this album from the last, which you did mention, was definitely the production, which sounded clearer this time around.
Request: Katatonia - Dead End Kings. I'm a big Katatonia fan, and am enjoying it a great deal, despite it being their most mellow release to date. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it.
totally agree. Didn't really enjoy their past LPs that much, but this I can dig. It's the nooks and crannies like you pointed out that have me pretty excited about this one.
I subscribed a few days ago and I have to say that every video of yours that I have watched has been excellent. You are doing a great service to music fans everywhere.
i saw Behold the Arctopus on monday, i told Colin about this Krallice review. i would hope even would even dare have the notion to check this out since he told me that he doesnt care for things like reviews.
Album review- Mirage Rock: Band of Horses, Cruel Summer: G.O.O.D. Music, Love This Giant: St Vincent & David Byrne (Stunning Album)
Track Review: Marilyn: Bat For Lashes, Danny Brown: Changes and Twerps: Work It Out
Thank you for reviewing this, Anthony. I truly value your opinions in Metal.
I knew I wasn't going to listen to this album, but I love to hear the description of these tracks. The high registers, the torchered yells, the blast beats that used to represent something murderous, the really mathy structure that doesn't repeat itself. I think I'm gonna click on the highest viewed Kralice video I see on the related videos on the side now. A.D.D. Sorry, thanks, bye,
not sure about reviewing this one. i've never been into DMX. sorry. :-(
thank you for watching.
I'm glad you liked this album. It's a very complete musical statement from the band. Sounds like the band members melted together into one big fucking monster that shot a laser beam out of it's eyes which proceeded to travel the cosmos destroying and collecting everything it could find before coming back down to earth and absorbing itself back into the monster that it originated from.
Anthony, please do the new Swans. I'm dying to hear what you think of it.
Title Fight!!! I saw you like Head in the Ceiling Fan. It's a killer album
Solid. What I like about this review is that it seems as if you are listening to the album for the first time whilst reviewing it. This lends a superb perspective to the quality of the review, as the reviewer seems as if he might be taking an honest attempt to take a completely unique black monstrosity and forcing it to sound like Darkthrone going to a waterpark. How old is Darkthrone now? Oh yea, probably as old as you or I. "Immensely intense hellfire" Yes. Thank you.
this kind of black metal isnt suppose to be "digested" you are suppose to FEEL this. be emersed by the atmosphere, sounds, vibes and feelings. if youre looking to digest you music, you might miss what the band is trying to convey with their feeling that surround the sound
This tired review from Anthony is one of his best.
Watching this review while simultaneously blaring Have a Nice Life in the parking lot of my school, so your shirt made it all the more appropriate. Awesome review, agree spot on and Krallice are great!
Deconstructionist by Giles Corey might be an appropriate review too, since I'm inherently on the subject of Enemies List, hah.
Wow comments about the review and music not just memes. Great album. Great review.
Roeland Wiersema yeah, this was before TND’s comment section died... it was a good run for several years, and I miss it terribly. That’s what was nice about the Deep Cuts channel, but that’s now on hiatus, sadly (check that channel out if you haven’t, it’s fantastic.. only music/review channel that comes close to TND imo, and possibly better). ✌🏼
Hey I like the long reviews, I don't care. That Marylin Manson one you did when you went through all his stuff was really good, you should do stuff like that more often. Anyway, thanks Fantanino, will check out this album
Gaza -- No Absolutes In Human Suffering. Real intense and nihilistic Metallic Hardcore/Sludge Metal that features a lot more beautiful moments than they've had on their previous releases. Sorry, I've mentioned this one a lot, but I'm just pretty enthusiastic about it.
Cheers Elephant - Like Wind Blows Fire
Great review for a great album. A shame I saw this almost two years late!
YES PLEASE MAKE A REVIEW FOR THAT ALBUM
Bands like Krallice and Liturgy aren't trying to be "real black metal". They have tons of influence from it, but they're taking that music and forming something of their own. Most "real" black metal fans don't even listen to bands like Krallice or Liturgy, so I don't know why you would compare the two.
Anthony Fantano: well formed argument with pros and cons about metal albums.
Other RUclips metal reviewers: OH MAN IT'S SO HEAVY 10/10
I love DGD but that album came out over a year ago, it would be very out of the ordinary for Anthony to review, would love to here his opinion on it though.
Thank you for reviewing this, Anthony.
As a prog-rock guy who is intrigued by black metal from a stylistic standpoint, I'll be looking into these guys. Thanks again, Anthony! \m/
debating on this one. :-)
2nd one is wolves in the throne room - two hunters, other one is tim hecker - ravedeath
Damn man, nice review. That was really interesting despite the amount of time
you know your music, you know how to review very good, and you are a hilarious man...pretty much a comedian.
You're awesome man.
While I hate the fact that Black Metal has become a trend in the "hipster community" I love the direction that some of the bands in the genre have explored in the past decade and continuing to experiment with. When it comes to new bands trying to recreate the original formula, the LPs they produce sound like plain rip-offs of superior music created almost 20 years ago. I'm pumped as hell for some 2010's atmospheric avant-garde technical progressive black metal.
Anthony should review a Drudkh album.
The Blood In Our Wells. Love that record.
He should review Exercises in Futility as well.
You should review Blut Aus Nords "777 - Cosmosophy" when it's released (25th of September).
It's going to be a hell of an album.
Okay, I might be experiencing some fucked up Mandela effect or something but I distinctly remember Krallice releasing a crazy album with vibrant flames all up on the cover through the Australian label "Art As Catharsis." Maybe around 2017 or something. Also there was some kinda pirate themed one. Both of these have disappeared. Am I crazy?
The sound, the playing, the structures... just disgustingly awesome. Listening to it with a good set of headphones, it feels like being held by a giant snake (maybe).
Floral Greeeeeeeeeeeennnn, really curious to see your stance on title fight
Thanks Anthony. Thanks Cal.
I'd love to see you review cruel summer!
David Byrne & St. Vincent - Love this Giant!
That's right!
I might have to check this out, all I know of Mick Barr is Shred Earthship.
I'm loving the new album man... \m/ big wolves in the throne room fan also.
You should review Kurupt - Tha Streetz Is A Mutha next. Great work.
New Mala album? That's a HUGE release, you should definitely give your thoughts on it!
Absolutely agree, Death Grips, Liturgy, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Battles, OFF!, Black Breath, Cloud Nothings, Holograms, Ty Segall...
Circa Survive - Violent Waves
Also like the cds lining the too, i'm sure they fell a bunch trying to put them up
Impressive review for an impressive album
- i wish such detailedness would happen to an album i like.
my bad! :-)
The Gaslamp Killer - Breakthrough, I just know you're gonna like that shit!!!!
amazin review anth ... now get some sleep, look forward to hearing this :D
You are the man! Cruel Summer !
I Loved This Album!! Review Conscious Currents, by Motion Sickness of Time Travel?
David Byrne & St. Vincent - Love (list) this Giant!
I loved this album, although I do think I like Ash Borer's "Cold Of Ages" a bit more.
You really picked this puppy apart.
I'd give it a listen but like you, I'm extremely tired and I figure that's a bad combo to listen to this with hahah
Will definitely give it a listen, though.
I really wish I could understand metal subgenres, though.
I mean I've sort of based myself around metal and I still don't understand them.
You should do a video on subgenres, sometime! haha
Any chance of a review of Kentucky by Panopticon. Great mix of atmospheric black metal and bluegrass.
tony knows his shit about black metal. very thoughtful look at the 'hipster" tag, ty
also should do a review on dodecahedron pls :D
Deerhoof.
Woods.
St. Vincent / David Byrne.
Title Fight - Floral Green
Love This Giant!!!
I loved Cal Jazz.
Review: Joy wants eternity - You who pretend to sleep (Album, 2007) Please!
Circa survive: Violent waves would be cool
Blaqk Audio - Bright Black Heaven!
Downtown Battle Mountain II - Dance Gavin Dance.
Mmmm, Two Hunters sitting up there on the shelf
I would hardly call these guys black metal. Just because they have tremolo picking and blast-beats does not make them black metal. The feeling these guys create with their music is much lighter and far more uplifting. Interesting to see you picking this album apart in such detail though. This is something I sit and bathe in rather than try and pick apart.
i listened to them, it was interesting and i can respect it, but its not my cup of tea. the snare sounds way too far away, and always one mili second behind the beat? But it was mixed super interesting
Blut aus Nord - "777 - Cosmosophy" Its killer \m/
I loved this too!
you're not tired, just really high. can't fool us.
I really wanted Cal to be a virtuoso jazz pianist.
Anthony, PalLeeeeez get another tree - made the first 20 seconds of your videos that little bit more awesome. Do it, DO IT, DOOOOOO IIIIITTTTTT !!!!
