It was brilliant for the writers to center a story around plastic toys considering where computer animation was at when this was made. It goes leaps and bounds to “hiding” the fact that flesh textures weren’t quite there yet.

    • @taqresu5865
      @taqresu5865 2 года назад +42

Yeah, the whole complaint about CGI people looking "plastic" because of the uncanny valley is void here because most of the toys here are plastic (well not so much for the human characters, but the writers incorporated the idea that toys act in the absence of human attention).

During the first song when Andy's playing with Woody, you can see the expression on Woody's face change a couple times.
Also in the other toys defense: 1. Even though Woody didn't knock Buzz out the window on purpose, he did intend to knock Buzz behind the desk. 2. They did catch him with Buzz's disembodied arm. 3. Woody kicked RC off the moving van with an malicious laugh. I can understand them thinking he's gone off the deep end since Woody doesn't exactly come off well in this movie.

I remember apologizing to my Wild Wing Mighty Duck action figure for replacing him with a newer, cooler version after watching this movie. 🤣 So many toys in the toy chest that I completely stopped playing with suddenly got a bunch of use.
Being a girl into action figures I noticed I played with mine a lot differently than most boys did. My actions figures had full on Soap Opera/Telenovela drama. There were evil twins, different versions from other dimensions/timelines, clones, body snatchers, etc. Love and rejection, Spies and double crossers and world ending cataclysmic events. It was basically The Sims with less babies 🤣 On top of whatever storylines they were already doing on tv that I wanted to incorporate.

My favorite ever Easter Egg from any Pixar movie is in this one. In Sid’s room, there’s a red crate that says ‘Binford’. Tim Allen was on a show called Home Improvement at the time, and in the show he plays the host of a tool show sponsored by Binford tools. Logo is the same, too. Well, of course it would be lol. I just thought that was such a great nod to that property. When I saw this in theaters I nearly screamed when I saw it. I was legitimately OBSESSED with JTT at he time lol

If you thought this was a horror movie in its current state, just look up the Black Friday Reel. It's extremely rare that an animated character sends chills down my spine, but Woody as he was originally envisioned was just flat out scary. In fact, it was because of this that production almost got shut down. The higher ups at Disney did not like Woody one bit and nearly canceled the movie, but they gave Pixar a chance to rewrite the script and change the character, and they did. It wasn't an overly positive approval, but they liked it well enough that they let them continue on.

    Hey guys,
is it weird to say that the thing I'm mostly looking forward to when you do movie reactions is the insightful talk afterwards?
You guys are incredibly smart and you seem to have great empathy. When I listen to you I feel like you "understand life", for the lack of a better description. 😅💜
My favourite toys when I was young were Barbie dolls... yeah I know, typical little girl here. 😆 But I loved each one so much and I always treated them like fragile treasures.
When my younger sisters got their hands on them while I was on school vacation they messed up their beautiful silky hair, ripped off their heads, painted on their tiny faces and ripped their pretty dresses to shreds - I was HEARTBROKEN when I came back and found my dolls. I'll never forget that. 😔💔
I've always treated my things with the utmost care - be it dolls, books or stuffed animals - and I hated to share everything with my siblings even though my mother insisted on me to share. She knew my sisters would destroy my things and yet she kinda encouraged that behavior.
Anyway long story short, I loved your movie reaction, as always!!

This was my favorite film as a kid. I watched it 40x the first week I got it on VHS; my sister and I probably drove our mom crazy because she had to see it at home after seeing it on loop every day when she worked in the shoe dept. at Walmart (which was next to the small electronics dept. at the time).
My favorite toy growing up wasn't really a toy, per se. I was (and still am) into trivia games, so I had a ton of trivia board games. But of the toys I had, I'd probably say that my favorite was my Yakbak (similar to a Talkboy).

Just because you have one or two scenes being set during Christmas, doesn't mean it IS a Christmas movie. The same thing can be said about Lady and The Tramp which both starts and end at Christmas but the rest of the movie is set the other seasons of the year but primarily spring and summer (with a short scene set in winter), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone or The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, or even Die Hard or Batman Returns, both being set during Christmas Time but Christmas isn't the main theme or thing unlike say all versions of The Grinch, The Nightmare Before Christmas (though it's half-Halloween/half-Christmas), Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer or A Charlie Brown Christmas and especially the numerous adaptations of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol.

Be sure to watch the pixar story documentary if you have disney plus. I know you boys have been reacting to Book of Boba but the story of John Lasseter's career with disney and using cg animation in a 2d film got him fired from the company and ro see his uprising with this film was incredible to see

You don't see the kid's faces because they are all Andy, you can catch it if you pause at the right spot. This saving on resources for model designs led to the theory that Andy is a clone.

I both loved this movie and was terrified of it at the same time as a child. This movie definitely taught me to respect and cherish my toys to the point where I wouldn't want my floor vacuumed in case I lost a LEGO piece or two, let alone mutilate my toys like Cid did.

You can see how the struggled with some of the proportions, it was extremely long to render the locations and rooms and they couldn't always have a lot of detail. Nowaday, Pixar renders an entire New York City with thousands of people in a block with trash and plants. The plants here look as plastic as the toys. It wasn't until the second PIXAR movie A Bug's Life when they got plants to look good. And even there, they were able to combat the plastic aesthetic of the 3D characters due to the hard exoskeletons of the insects. Notice that Andy didn't have any plush toys, the animators didn't really invent the advanced fur technology until Monster's Inc. They had fur technology before, but it was not as advanced and very untouchable interactively speaking. Just look at Scud the dog, which sort or added to the scariness of the dog honestly. However, the run cycle looks super wacky if you watch that again. The basic material the animators had to work with were lamberts, blinns, and phongs. The humans were the modeler's nightmare which is why they were filmed at leg height and all of Andy's friends looked like his twin and also that Andy didn't have a dad (The in universe theory, it is speculated Andy's dad left and that is the reason that Andy's family was moving).

Part of why th enostalgia factor of this movie worked for kids and adults is obviously because kids can relate. However adults can double relate, once their own childhood, and then from an adult giving toys to kids and how those toys connect you to your child. So every kid sees themselves in Andy, and every adult seems themselves in Andy's Mom, and Sid's mom (even thogh she's off screen every parent can still relate to being a parent of a kid like Sid).

i liked the video! thank you :)

My favorite kids productions are the ones that entertain the kids and and the adults - and it’s not just the situational or thematic ways but offhand nods and jokes for parents kids won’t get but don’t care (ie Mr potato head with his face on out of order saying PICASSO!)
Also the rug in Sid’s house is an homage to the unforgettable rug in the Overlook hotel.

I have this little gi-joe action figure from the 70’s that originally belonged to my Uncle. It had moved on to live in my Grandparents random toy box. When I was 3 or so I found it in there and just liked it so much that I played with it every time I came over. Eventually my either my Grandparents or my uncle let me have it, I don’t remember exactly. I’ve always called him Superman for some reason, maybe his hairstyle reminded me of Christopher Reeve. I still have him. I don’t really remember what kind of games I played with him, he was just always around. I also have my Teddy bear which I will keep until it turns to dust.
