The "crazy" grasshopper is actually a locust. When grasshoppers brush up against each other too much (such as in a swarm) they will literally lose their minds and undergo a biological change that turns then into a different species. Super interesting and horrifying @_@
Thumper was treated the worst by Hopper essentially. Intentionally suppressing the urge by keeping him isolated from his species drives him mad constantly. Thumper likely in constant agony and we all know locusts in a swarm have such appetite they devastate anything which is denied to him. Worse than a starving pet. Wouldn't surprise me Thumper could be borderline cannibalistic if let loose.
Grasshoppers and locusts are the same specials. Locusts are just what you call a swarm of grasshoppers. It's like how a bunch of birds together is called a flock.
The "grains" allegory was a reminder that the citizenry has a responsibility to keep its government in line... "If they all stand up to us..." Governments should ALWAYS be afraid the people will stand-up to them.
When I returned to A Bug's Life, after only seeing it as a child, it's been fun looking back at how cool and badass Hopper is as a villain. Making sure to keep the status quo by making the ants feel powerless and worthless, and knows what is at stake if the balance of power is lost. He's not powerful because he is strong, he's powerful because he is an intelligent dictator who knows how to control power. Even after the ants fight back, he doesn't cower and give up, knowing that as long as he can kill their hope and bring back despair with a unbeatable army of Grasshoppers, that he can return to the status quo. and man... how do you make something as cute as a small bird and a triple of chicks into the most horrifying beasts that people would have nightmares about.
The bird scene didn't scarr me and my sis only because we already had seen the Microcosmos movie. I think that's where they got the idea from (several actually).
Personally, I'm wondering how I *wasn't* scared of Hopper's death scene in this movie, yet I *was* scared of a similar scene in _Mickey's Christmas Carol_ . (Anyone who's seen that movie knows which scene I'm talking about.)
I HAVE THIS ON VHS somewhere in my attic, The only thing I remember is the flies "don't go into the light....but it's soooo beautiful " joke. My mum loves it
As a kid and an adult, I still feel so inspired when the ants all work together to stand up to the grasshoppers. Also, I WISH that the Pixar movies still had bloopers as they did for A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Monsters Inc. They're the best.
Yeah, I wish that too. It has been over 20 years since Pixar did bloopers so if they did it again now it would feel fresh again. I know Pixar themselves got a bit sick of it after three movies in a row but that doesn't mean they shouldn't stop it forever.
I never noticed before but if you look at the cookie box they use as a caravan, it says "Casey Jr. Cookies" That's a subtle nod to the movie "Dumbo" because that was the name of the train they rode. Lol the easter eggs you don't see as a kid.
@@whitenoisereacts Also the trailer the bug town is under is the same trailer from the "ANOTHER GATOR!" scene from Monster's inc. I laughed so hard when I realized it after rewatching this.
This movie reminds me of the old fable the grasshopper and the ant. The one where the grasshopper lazes about all summer while the ant puts in all the work and by winter the grasshopper has nothing to eat while the ant enjoys a feast.
My favorite thing about the Bug City bar: If you really listen closely, you can hear the pianist playing “Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me” and “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”. I love little auditory details like that!
Love the whole rivalry between Disney and Dreamworks that started with Antz vs Bugs Life because one of them had a spy on the inside so they release essentially the same film the same year
They didn’t have a spy. Jeffrey Kattzenberg was chairman at Disney before he became co-founder and CEO of Dreamworks. He knew about A Bug’s Life because it was in early production and made Antz (and had it released a month before this) because he’s petty and still held a grudge for being fired. All the major studios kinda knew what the others were doing without needing spys. Because they all post announcements and casting calls in the trade magazines, like “Hollywood Reporter” or “Deadline Hollywood”

The basic story comes from "The Magnificent Seven". But it has its own Pixar twist. I enjoyed that they got Jonathan Harris as Manny. He's best known as Dr. Smith of Lost in Space. Love that he go in his catchphrase in "Oh the pain!

Something about this brings the inner child in me. Especially the bloopers in the end. Absolutely genius film. I also love how in the game they incorporate Hopper being the game over screen saying "you just lost."
This was the first film I ever saw in theaters. Only my mom and I went to see it. The film was released in November 1998 and my birthday is December 23rd so I was only three when I saw it and some standout moments I remember were: 1) The crowd laughing at the short Geri’s Game, 2) Laughing at Hopper’s death, and 3) Heimlich emerging with the tiny wings.

Cool fact bugs life came out before toy story 2. The opening where buzz flies through the canyon was the same canyon in this movie and they lowered the ground a little so the small pebbles were suspended in the air. You also see them talk of a bugs life 2 in the bloopers in toy story 2 before getting karate chopped by Buzz
There's others moments in " Toy Story 2 " where you can see the bugs : in the book Mrs Potato was reading when her husband give her her ear and in Al's shop during Buzz's escape
I like how he got super excited to hear flick say "To Infinity and beyond!". Did the version they were watching not have Woody in the outtakes? I feel like he would have loved that.
Two things: 1. This was the first ever movie I remember seeing in theaters. My parents told me it was technically the original Toy Story, but I was only 3 at the time and have no memories of that. So, this was the first one I can recall seeing. And 2. As a 29-year-old man, I just now got that sex joke from the fly. XD
I watched A Bug's Life constantly since I was a toddler. Whenever hopper is about to be on screen, I hide behind a couch, plant, chair or whatever object I can get behind because he's so intimidating. I always loved this movie. 10/10
I was obsessed with A Bug's Life as a kid all because of Flik. Pretty sure I had a crush on him along with Basil from The Great Mouse Detective, lol. BYOB is supposed to be "Bring Your Own Beer", I think, but my mom told me it meant "Be Your Own Bug" in context of the movie, haha. XD
BYOB is bring your own beer lol! This was one of my favourite movies as a kid and i still quote it at random times. Those bloody grasshoppers were terrifying though
A Bug's Life is great- it's never been one of my favorites, but it's definitely underrated! Especially because this is only Pixar's second feature film, after Toy Story. It's kinda crazy how much the animation improved just from Toy Story to this! As for other Pixar movies y'all should watch, there's SO many good ones, but if you haven't seen Wall-E, Coco, or Up, those would be great. And if somehow either of you haven't seen Finding Nemo or Finding Dory, those are also amazing. Really just about all of Pixar's movies are amazing.
I had to come back and rewatch this reaction. “Bugs” is now my toddler’s favourite movie and we watch it nearly every day. I thought for sure the crazy grasshopper would scare her (and she definitely acknowledges that it’s scary), but she keeps watching and loves the story. It’s a joy to see her enjoy it and fun to watch you guys enjoy it as well - it’s definitely a film for all ages
One thing I love about this movie is that the main character actually ISNT the one who’s hiding who he truly is, rather, he’s the one being deceived. It’s so much more fun to watch a movie when you can get behind the main character and not be constantly waiting for shit to go down when the inevitable is revealed. Misunderstandings involving the main character always hurt to watch, and are rarely pulled off well
Many years ago I 'supported' a small colony of red ants (chill, harmless, outnumbered). I built several small transport spaceships out of cardboard, filled with small pieces of sunflower seeds. I put them near the major entrance of the colony, opened the hatch and waited. After some minutes the started to unload the ships completely. That was pretty cool.

My son watched the movie all the time and I always watched cartoons with him cause I'm a big kid. I still remember all these lines. He used run around saying "Who ordered the poopoo platter?!"
Bring Your Own Beer? This great movie was loosely based on the great Akira Kurosawa 50's masterpiece "Seven Samurai" (the original Samurai movie). Kurosawa was an inspiration to George Lucas who took elements/characters from a mix of Kurosawa's films, mainly "The Hidden Fortress and gave us Star Wars, Jedi's being Space Samurai. :)
This is still one of my favorite Pixar movies ever. I feel like it's such an underrated movie compared to Toy Story, Cars, Monsters Inc and all the other popular Pixar movies.
2:54 Fun fact: Mr. Soil is voiced by the late Roddy McDowall, who's best known for playing Cornelius in _The Planet of the Apes_ , and Disney fans might know him as the guy who gets assaulted by Miss Price's night gown in _Bedknobs and Broomsticks_ .
P.T. Flea wasn't told about the plan and he thought the bird was real like The Grasshoppers. He was using Flame of Death to get rid of a monster, trying to save everybody (or at least what was "left" of his circus) and didn't realize the whole thing until the bird crashed. Pity we didn't see a reaction from him realizing "What I have done!" but at least he gives Dim the signal to get ready to fire Hopper out of the cannon, so he did redeem himself from his fatal mistake.

BYOB is bring your own beer XD I never realized he said that, I saw this as a child, and this is my first time revisiting this movie XD
Heimlich was my absolute favorite as a child, I literally had a plush Heimlich coin purse that I brought everywhere with me XD "I am a cute little bumble bee!"
Another one of my favourite animations! I wish all animated movies had blooper scenes at the end! They're always so funny!
This was the first Pixar movie I've ever seen and for a long time it'd been my favourite. I still think it's very underrated and better than many other Pixar movies 🐜🦗🦋🐞🐛 I'm glad you guys loved it too
My son watched the movie all the time and I always watched cartoons with him cause I'm a big kid.
One thing that i didn't realize for a long time was that when Hopper was getting massaged he was laying on a bullet.
I love how they take the time to make "bloopers" for Pixar movies
This is still one of my favorite Pixar movies ever. I feel like it's such an underrated movie compared to Toy Story, Cars, Monsters Inc and all the other popular Pixar movies.
The bird scene at the end literally traumatised me as a kid 😂 I would hide behind the couch when it came on 😂
This was my favorite movie as a kid :)
I remember really liking this movie when i was younger and still enjoy it now, really loved the outtakes at the end of the movies.
For answering at your question, the woodlice are hungarian.
I always wonder if someone manages to find Slim when he's stuck
one of my top favorite movies when I was little. I still have the VHS tape. I also have the movie ANTZ, great movie
The best movie of Pixar!
I love this movie… the video game for it is EXTREMELY nostalgic for me
After looking it up, Hopper’s voice was done by Kevin Spacey.
Haha I miss the time when they made outtakes in the credits 😂
I loved your reaction, and the villain in this one for sure felt scary
I've been hoping you guys would react to this! I loved it along with Antz as a kid. Even had the video game for Playstation. 😅
I had to go watch one of the best scenes, “ tweet tweet, tweet tweet”!
Finding Nemo/Dory are two of my favourites. And of course, Coco. 🎸
This movie has such an awesome repeat value. I have played this movie so many times when I was sick in bed. This movie is so much fun 💕😁
This was just after the first _Toy Story_ and Pixar's 2nd movie.
Personally, I prefer _ANTZ,_ but I don't dislike _A Bugs Life._
After Toy Story, I'll always feel an uncomplete thing without Buzz's cartoon getting reacted too😅
Another one of my childhood favorites.
