    Many sitcoms primarily rely on pure absurd, constructed situations - this one works out real insights to human thinking and psyche, which makes it more intense and rather timeless. These insights are then presented mostly by Jeff (in his deep, sometimes seemingly absurd, but still correct explanations), Susan (by her short comments) and Steve (in his rants).

      Right, because Jeff running around town in a BDSM mask is so realistic and not absurdist.

    • @martinb.770

      @@Raison_d-etre Ok, Coupling does work out some absurd situations (but somewhat less exaggerated than e.g. by Seinfeld), but its insights and humor doesnt rely on this sort of situations (brought up by Jeff, Oliver or Jane), but quite spreads over a range from absurd to clever and subtle, be it on the topic, the timing or working it out by then new ways of telling the story, or rather showing (not simply telling).
      Thats at least my perception of it. Depending on your focus you might see it other ways.

    It's hard to carve this show up into bits like this. There are running gags that span years worth of episodes before paying off TBH.

    Oh my goodness totally love this TV series coupling right here I used to watch every time it came on PBS channel. Not only that but I went out and bought the DVD box set and watched it like crazy can't help it it's a fantastic in the coolest TV show. Anyway I wish they had put this out on Blu-ray disc it would be so much better. Not only that I wish PBS would play this again. The series was so fantastic in the coolest I loved it. I think sooner or later PBS will put this back on again. What the heck they did the same thing with the vicar of Dibley. Lake latest TV series for wild they took it off and they just put it back on the vicar of Dibley is another fantastic television series at PBS plays also. So many people ask me who is my favorite character on coupling and I have to go with Jeff he's my favorite of all times. Give the what we want so what we want is coupling back on PBS. Score put coupling on Blu-ray disc just saying. There are still a lot of fans who love coupling and still would love two support it on PBS if they played it again. or if they put on Blu-ray disc I definitely would buy it love coupling.

      Cloud Strife the US version was horrible. And I’m American.
      The only American television shows that were based upon BBC shows, and were actually successful, were All In The Family (Til Death Us Do Part), Sanford and Son (Steptoe and Son), and The Office.

    • @josebrown5961
      @josebrown5961 2 года назад +2

      Yes the US version was crap! I wanted it to work so bad.
      The casting was all wrong. American Susan was no good for Susan.
      American Sally was also not right, she really is a Brit but she played American…
      Jane was the only one that was right.
      They actually tried to make the Brit scripts work for American audiences. Their writers were not good enough. That was evident in the first five minutes of episode 1.
      If only Ricky Gervais had done American Coupling. Have him find American writers and he could have helped pick the cast. Of course I am only saying that because The Office started out great and got better as the americans grew into their characters.

    • @ValhallaRaven
      @ValhallaRaven Год назад +1

      Because British humour doesn’t translate to American audiences. A lot of times they have to dumb down the humour so the majority of Americans would actually get it…at that point all humour is gone.

    Honestly Jack Davenport should have been picked to be Arthur Dent in the Hitchhiker's movie over Martin Freeman (excellent Bilbo, awful Arthur). This scene alone proves he would have smashed it plus he does look quite similar to Simon Jones!
