    Have you ever been talking to someone you really like, I mean you've got a FAT crush on this person and for some reason when you're around them you're the most awkward, uncomfortable, nervous person on the planet -____-
    www.peakyourmin...
    But then, when it comes to someone you're not necessarily interested in, your incredibly sexy, funny, smooth, suave side comes out and everything you say suddenly sounds awesome?
    Or better yet, maybe you're totally cool talking to people you know but when it comes to talking to a stranger or meeting someone new your brain decides now would be a good time to shut down and you start stuttering and you turn red and they notice and you're thinking in your head "this is my nightmare!".
    www.peakyourmin...
    I don't know about you (but I'm feelin' 22 t-swift lolz) but I've been there way too many times.
    And for the longest time I didn't get it.
    Why is it with some people we can easily have chill conversations and with other people we freeze up and can't even put real words together?
    www.peakyourmin...
    But I finally got it, I figured this one out and I'm passing on the holy grail of overcoming social anxiety to you. Just make sure you replace it with something of about the same weight or the entire temple will crumble and a giant boulder will chase after us. AH! Haha
    Anyway, in today's episode I'm giving you 3 quick tips that helped me overcome my own social anxiety and nervousness in talking to new people and I bet they'll help you too.
    Something I'd also like to add is that I'm in no way belittling this issue I’m simply offering solutions in a condensed format but what’s interesting is that many of us are taught or conditioned to think we have this huge issue and lifelong struggle and then we’re prescribed tons of medications as a first resort solution as opposed to practicing simpler, more natural, cognitive and proven methods to resolve this within ourselves.
    There’s plenty of evidence that shows chemical imbalances can be influenced and changed through our own beliefs and physiology. This can be seen in the work of Amy Cuddy and how she discovered an increase in testosterone production and decrease in the secretion of cortisol when we apply certain physiological patterns and body language. It’s also seen in Kelly McGonigal work on stress and how simply believing that stress is bad for you can induce ailments and take years off your life as opposed to experiencing stress and believing it to be a normal state of being. The mind-body connection is massive and highly-explored through a number of different studies over the years. I know you mean well and I can see that you know my intentions are good While it’s difficult to explain an in-depth, universal solution to an issue like this, I want to share with people that there are ways in which we can take back control of our physiology, biochemistry and emotional states. And while modern medicine can be helpful in some circumstances, there are a number of other really powerful solutions when we go in-depth on how the mind and body actually work.
    Here's a couple other resources for learning more about how our minds can influence how biochemistry and physiology.

    I have A LOT social anxiety!:( I can't order food, I can't pay for my own clothes at the mall, and I can't even raise my hand in class. It's the worst thing in the world. When I talk to people I can't keep conversation and my mind spins and I don't know what to say!! It sucks but it happens on a daily basis so you've really helped me Martin:) So thankyou

      +Emma Powers I feel you girl. i have very low self confidence and low self esteem. Because of the fear of talking to other ppl i avoid talking to my classmates. sometimes i think that they might think that i am arrogant and rude and very proudy because i don't talk to them and when i do talk to them i just don't know how to keep the conversation going and i end up saying something completely stupid and they think i'm weird. i think that is why no guy approaches me to talk. i am not native english speaker and in my country(india) ppl keep judging you on the basis of the level of your english so when i talk to ppl in english i get very nervous and start sweating i keep critisizing my self for every mistake i make..ugg it sucks :(

    This is how i overcame well over 80% (estimate) of my fear of talking to people. I went form talking low and looking down to practically screaming in people's faces, with confidence and clear mind. I got a hair cut (fade), i got some new cloths, i got really skinny/muscular, and i jus't put myself in the middle of a packed gym, daily, for 1 year. Now i have way less anxiety. Fuck it, life is too short. Who cars who people think of you. I laugh at myself when I'm on the stair master (elevated so that the entire gym can see me laughing at myself), and i don' care. Why? Fuck it, life is too short.

    I was horribly bullied when I was young to the point of attempted/contemplated suicide. Those that did this to me were 'untouchable' in our small town and adults would turn a blind eye. Granted I wasn't the most fit or athletic of the bunch. Even some of the adults would poke fun. It's caused a crippling sense of isolationism and I've become such a heavy introvert I find it hard to leave the house when not at work or doing a task such as eating or shopping.
    I do my best just to become a shadow in public, I don't draw attention, nor do I want it. I don't want people around me but I'm horribly lonesome. I've shaped my body through better diet, have done vigorous martial arts to strengthen. I'm going back to school to become a youth psychologist. I've got a good job that pays enough for me to pursue these goals.
    How do I stop the lonely? I don't understand interactions but feel more like I study them just to copy certain behaviors. It hurts and I can't find my opiate to numb the wound. I end up starting off well in social interactions, and then it goes horribly south when I miss a cue (happens often) or state something that is precarious to the situation. Then I just try and turn it into "quirky" humor which seems to do fine but all I can hear is the kids back then laughing at me.
    I'm honestly not trying to sound like a Marvel/DC super villain at this point.

      +draconic33 You sound more like a Marvel/DC super hero to me...a lot of fictional and real heroes started out being bullied or neglected...and now some are fighting bullying
      www.geekwire.com/2015/the-fight-against-bullying-pop-culture-hero-coalition-encourages-real-life-heroism-at-comic-con/
      My son was also bullied in middle school but has found himself in music and has good friends who appreciate his humor. You are clearly intelligent, articulate, and accomplished...and deserve to feel how worthy you are. It's hard to unhear and unfeel the meanness from the past but the fact that you can identify it as coming from outside of you, from the past (rather than being your own self-criticism), means that you will be able to make those voices fainter and fainter.
      And you're having some social success...with quirky humor even. Good for you. Being in social situations as a young adult is really hard; I'm a LOT older and still feel like I'm making it all up (conversations and the rest are total improv, really, We make it up.) I, and everyone I know, has gotten more comfortable with themselves, with hanging out and talking, as they got older. You realize that all those people you thought were judging you were too busy with their own self-judgments. Or else they weren't worth it. And a lot of the "in-crowd" untouchables from senior year lead humdrum adulthoods. And most bullies regret their bullying.
      I hope you get to travel and meet different kinds of people in different settings...and get to define yourself on your own terms. I hope you realize your dream of being a youth psychologist...or find similar work to give youth the understanding and support you deserved.
      And I hope you find love that heals some of the sting and lets you be the most amazing person in the world to someone.
      Take a look at Superbetter.com It's a way of gamifying going after your goals, bit by bit, and supported by others in fighting the demons.

I do hope your son is doing much better now.

    You gotta change your mindset. Basically whenever you feel nervous/anxious, try to control it and "slow it down." To go into the science of it, you're basically reducing your brain's "beta" waves and turning them into "alpha" waves. Beta waves are what we experience during alert states and it kinda matches the fight or flight response (the state we experience with social anxiety). Alpha waves are what we experience when we are calm and controlled, which is the key to feeling comfortable instead of anxious. I essentially eliminated social anxiety over the course of a year by using this "control" technique every time I was in an "anxious" situation, whether social or not. The technique basically eliminates the physical reactions that are associated with anxiety, like fast heart rate, blushing, quick nervous movements, stuttering, etc... Once those symptoms are gone what's left is all in your mind. Just remember, "control it."

    • @emolink6667
      @emolink6667 8 лет назад

      +ShadowQuik But how do you change your beta waves into alpha waves?

    • @ShadowQuik
      @ShadowQuik 8 лет назад +2

      Jαsminεღ The way I put it may sound more complicated than it is. All you need to do is control yourself and try to remain calm in situations that make you anxious. Just keep forcing yourself to remain calm and collected and eventually, with time, you will eliminate the anxiety altogether.

    I don't think this is really usefull for people with social anxiety disorder, cuz social anxiety - at least in my case - is really overhelming, hard and not easy to overcome by just three steps. These tips are good, but it's more for really shy people, since social anxiety is a mental illness, that makes you feel anxious just thinking about going out with a dog, or to a shop for food, or talking to a person in some office (such as health insurence office and stuff like this..)
    People often don't know the real difference, because physical "symptoms" are very similiar, but the mental ones are not. Social anxiety is often going hand in hand with depressions, because you feel like useless sh't when you are not able to force yourself to live as other people, and that leads to isolation even more.

    • @jacobzamora5793
      @jacobzamora5793 8 лет назад +1

      Yeah I really know what you're saying, some of my classes this semester have participation grades and I haven't been able to ever really contribute anything, which just leads to you downing on yourself..my family's had a history of depression but it's really just hit me this year. Then being depressed just makes it all the harder to connect to people cause you lose the motivation and it just keeps spiralling and becoming worse..

    • @thomas-dz6up
      @thomas-dz6up 8 лет назад +3

      +SushiClipsCR I understand and I agree. it's worse when you get older because people notice it more, and can tell by different behavior. I Isolate myself because I cannot deal with the real world. I can also relate to people on the High functioning Autism spectrum which has me thinking I may have that too.

    • @DevilFrog61

      I blame society for all of this anxiety bullshit...back then people weren't so closed off from the world and each other with technology, they didn't have the luxury to give a shit what people thought..I used to be really shy and nervous (still do sometimes..it's how society conditions you) but one day I honestly decided that I was sick and tired of being afraid all the time and started fixing my mind...stop caring...i guess it's an illness because it's a self fulfilling prophecy...don't tell yourself that there's something wrong with you, because truth is that it's completely curable and controllable...just gotta break the social conditioning and start getting value from within yourself...exercise, accomplish daily tasks, have little daily goals and habits that build self esteem...you can cure anxiety...DONT TAKE MEDS that will f**k you up lol.....but honestly just get a little fire under your ass and decide that your sick of being this way and grow into a damn butterfly already.

    I wish it was as easy as saying it. I have tried to overcome my social anxiety multiple times and ended up making it worse. So far, it's ruining my life. I'm only 14 and I have no friends because I grew apart from them because I became afraid to talk to them. I will probably end up moving far away after my parents pass and be alone for the rest of my life, never leaving my home. My mom keeps telling me, "Just stop being so shy, go make some friends," but it's not that easy. Unfortunately.

    hey man! i just wanted to say thank you so much! everything you said too do to help out i did the opposite, i would automatically think negative thoughts or expect negative things, instead of just expecting that they will like me. me personally you can tell my mood but my body language, i work in the fast food industry so i see alot of different faces everyday.As soon as i get in that negative state ill be like that through the full day. i never really thought bout my actions until this video, but the times im positive and dont expect negative things are the times i have my bad days at work. Example, i customer would come in and i will just expect that they wont like me and the customer can tell by my body language. its crazy how much your mind plays apart on how you present yourself/act/expect.

    I think only handsome ppl can overcome social anxiety. They can laugh freely , talk freely and just be out going. If ugly ppl like me getting too loud or giving a big action , ppl come to you and say you're weird or stare at you with a strange facial expression. Just like if I ask 9 ppl out of 10 a question on common daily life thing, they always give me an attitude. Ppl only like you if you at least look presentable or at least average.

    Really good advice! I have social anxiety and I notice a big difference when I change my attitude from negativ to positiv when i´m situations I don´t feel comfortable in because for me the problem is almost always in my head. When I expect it to go bad, it does!
    You have a cool personality, and it´s nice to listen to you;) I´m gonna subscribe:)

    Dang dude, you're really funny! Had me laughing. And I really like and agree with what you said about fear being an illusion. I read a lot of Joyce Meyer books, and she has this motto, "do it afraid", that goes hand in hand with what you're talking about. No matter how scared or intimidated you are, have confidence in yourself and just do whatever it is you need or want to do.

    Nice video! I think the biggest problem with my SA is when I have to engage in conversation with someone, I just don't know what to say. I always just nod my head or just smile because i just don't know how to reply. It's so awkard. But your advice was very helpful! I'll have to apply it to my own life once I gain some confidence. : )

      Well, a lot of the time, the other person can sense that I'm shy and may say something like " You 're very quiet" or " You don't talk very much" I always feel alittle embarrassed inside.

    I think i we can connect social anxiety with public presentations. I recently gave a speech in one of my classes and i could feel the hotness taking over my face. I knew i was turning red. All while my top lip was TWITCHING! I dont know why. It had never done that before. I was sooooo embarrassed. I stuttered and stuttered and finally i was done. I just wish i could be like the talkative kids in my class.

    I have problems with calming myself diwn before going to a new place, like I'm starting college and I got everything ready but theres these constant butterflies on my stomach telling me how scared I am and that makes me want to back away and hide. When I do that it hinders me from making friends and talking to people, I can't even order food face to face, but watching this helped I'm not sure to what extent but I feel more calm and relaxed in a way so thank you btw this is the first video I watched. My brain is doing flip flops right now.

    I used to get so nervous doing speeches. Then I realized I can't control other people so worrying about what they think is pointless. Now I just worry about whether I'm excited about my speech because if I'm not excited how can I expect others to be and why am I giving a speech I'm not excited about? Even if it's a work speech. If you can't find something interesting about the information being delivered you need to think about how it's important to the job and project you're doing. If nothing in your job excites you you're probably in the wrong career.

    I recently found out that I have Social anxiety disorder. And today I went to home school day at my local skating rink, and I was nearly in tears because the amount of people there (considering I was literally the only teen who came alone, didn't help.) And I've watched this video before, and I tried using your tips, but I just couldn't talk to anyone. :( I'm really self conscious (and getting braces next week is definitely gonna make that worse) and always afraid I'm gonna look stupid. Any chance you have advice for self conscious/social anxiety effected people?

      PyroPisces Hey, first you're definitely not alone in this. There are so many people who deal with this struggle and many who learn to overcome it. It's not some permanent issues that's going to stop from living the kind of life that you truly want. For starters though, it might be easier to take some baby steps before you go out and approach strangers because that can be pretty scary. I would start by building up your own self-image and self-esteem. And I don't mean externally, I mean start appreciating and loving yourself. I've got a vid on that, that can help! You can also start telling yourself the truth, that you are more than enough and beyond worthy of love. Sometimes we get a skewed image of ourselves and the world makes us think we're not enough because we have braces or don't look like "the coolest kid in school" none of that matters. You are much more than that. But begin with baby steps!

    Hi, Martin. Thanks for the help. I'm sure this can help me. I thought I "just" suffered for aproach anxiety to cute girls but what I realized yesrday night was that I also suffer from group anxiety. I was at a party, in a group and subconciously I guess I was thinking that they wouldn't like me (which is kinda wierd because I knew most of them, only 2/3 strangers, but I didn't see them for a while). I talked, of course, but not so much as I'm confortable with. I was like with a knot in my throat.
    Anyway, I will try this positive thinking stuff next time. lol

    This.... It's an okay advice, I force my self to do things I don't want to do because I don't want to disappoint anyone else... It doesn't fix it.. I feel like it gets worse a few days after I do these things.... It's really scary, I face some of these social fears but it never turns out great. I end up thinking about worse things which keep me from doing it again.. It makes me want to cry sometimes but I am too scared to cry ;-; because then I have to talk about this issue which is also scary.

    • @PeakYourMind
      @PeakYourMind  10 лет назад +6

      Nick Uchiha First man, if you're going to do anything it's gotta be because YOU want to, especially when it comes to personal change in your life. The intention behind your action has to be because you want to make a change. And hell yeah it's scary, but the problem could be in your approach. If you're going to push your comfort zone it's a good idea to make it fun and disconnect yourself from the worry of what the other person is going to think of you or rejection. Because rejection doesn't exist. Someone's reaction is just a reaction, that's it. We interpret whether or not it's "good" or "bad" or "rejection" or whatever and then what most people do is they process that as their self worth. Your self worth is dependent completely on you and how you see yourself. Take back your power and begin to see yourself as a badass dude, command your inner dialogue as someone who completely owns himself and you'll start to strengthen and build that part of your personality then what you used to think was scary will be cake.

    I'm in new classes and I was made to sit next to two people who I don't know. I can't even say hi to them, I can't speak. I worry that I will be judged. I just can't start a ordinary conversation! Please help.

    My worst is my face turns red in social situation and I think that's a good point how you pretty much compromise yourself before you even get into the situation.
