Keep in mind, too, that there's a good chance the "original" versions of these songs were not written by the artists who originally recorded them. So, in a sense, even the "originals" are covers. Songwriters are what could be thought of as the real "unsung" heroes of the song in so many instances. God bless the songwriters who get no public recognition!
You missed the late swedish producer Max Martin who was credited all the time for writing big hits for modern pop artists like Britney for exampel. Thats the big part why Sweden is at third place in music production in the world.
not all singers are songwriters and not all songwriters are performers its really common, Elvis wasn't a songwriter neither was Whitney the list goes on and on
Also Linda Ronstadt did a lot of covers and never hid it. I believe the songwriters were glad when she cover their songs, because she made them a lot of money. The song Desperado by the Eagles but was mediocre hit until Linda sang it and they were grateful that she did. I believe she sang it at their request. Also, they started out as her back-up band. Keep in mind that songwriters sell their rights over as an advancement in pay. The smart ones don't sell.
I don’t think Whitney or Celine wrote any of her songs. Not all singers are able to write songs! Covers are supposed to be a rendition of the original. I agree, if you are going to cover a song, put your own spin on it. Make it a little different! I always look at who wrote the songs. A good example is Willie Nelson. He wrote a lot of songs that other artists did before he started singing his own!
I can't believe "I Shot the Sheriff" wasn't on there, Clapton covered Marley. Or "Desperado", the Eagles covered Linda Rondstandt. "I will always love you" - Dolly Parton, was covered by many artists since the 70s incl. Frank Sinatra; except Elvis due to his wanting publishing. The song writers get royalties regardless of who sings. IMO the injustice is black Songwriters were ripped off on their royalties by the big houses. Sadly, even Gordy / Motown wasn't always fair.
As BB King said. Once something is out there anyone can add or take from it. A lot depends on who has the rights to the song. Recording companies are famous for keeping/taking the rights to songs on their labels and having other artists cover them. Especially if the other artist is more popular.
true, and lets be honest: you havent heard of some of these originals. Its not like they hid the original from the public, its all there online. Its just that some artists wasnt as popular, the cover added something, OR it was a european artist that would have never been played on the radio.
The one with about All-4-One I Swear being a cover, a few years ago the original singer, JMM actually re-recorded and made a video featuring him and All-4-One singing the song. You should check it out
I don't think you're wrong. I noticed it too. Artists are taking from melanated artists the most. Especially "The King" because of of the blues aspect. It's crazy. It really opened my eyes and depressed me at the same time. All the songs I love are in these lists.
It's been a fairly even split through most of these videos though. Even many of the ones that were taken were written by white and in one case jewish songwriters
The Orrin G. Hatch-Bob Goodlatte Music Modernization Act is United States legislation aimed to modernize copyright-related issues for music and audio recordings due to new forms of technology such as digital streaming. It is a consolidation of three separate bills introduced during the 115th United States Congress. It was signed into law by President Trump on October 11, 2018. It ensures that composers and lyricists are paid a portion of mechanical license royalties for either physical or digital reproduction of musical compositions, at a rate set by contract.

I don't mind some covers, as long it is good or different. If I like them both then I have both on my play list. Some cover I like better. Also, if the original song writer owns the rights of the song then they benefit from the royalties. True Story from Dolly. After singing her song "Will Always Love You" a little girl ran up to her and said That is Whitney's song and Dolly reply "that okay it can be Whitney Song as long as the checks keeps coming to me".
It has usually been black artists to white artists. However, there are exceptions. Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” was originally “Ida Red”, an old fiddle tune from West Rexas
The whole "White people appropriating black music" thing was most insidious in the first half the century, moving into the 60s, but really culminating with Elvis. Like, not just hearing a cool song that happened to be written by black people and wanting to cover it, but literally being like "We like your music, but not you." Since then, it's more just a matter of happenstance. While most white music in the past was very censored to be radio/culturally friendly, a lot of the great music from back then was black because of the freedom to be counter-culture and creative. Hence, if you hear a great song from like the 20s-50s and want to do a modern cover, there's a pretty good chance some black folks did the original. Once you start getting to 60s and beyond, it evens out a lot more, as shown by all the black covers of white artists
Yes, there was alot of black artists that had their songs covered and the cover got more popularity. A good example is with little richard. He mades songs, and because of the times, white people never heard those songs. Record labels literally took songs and changed the lyrics to appeal to white audiences. When i can find a clip i will post it here: ruclips.net/video/aA5xhZpDrLs/видео.html Tootie fruity was turned into: ruclips.net/video/Vv-LAbMbEn4/видео.html Anyway, another reason some songs are covered within 5 years of original release is because the original is a european artist. Those songs never hit US airwaves, but when a artist you know puts it out, you only know their version. Ive never heard of some of these original artists, but for whatever reason, their version ive never heard. its also good to mention that some songs change genre. Like a slow country song did better as a fast pop song. I like both versions, but it does change the mood and the meanings sometimes. "put an original spin on it at least" Nah i disagree. The song is good, nothing needs to change. What the cover did was get you to hear it. Have you ever heard of 3rd Party? No? Me neither. They are probably a unknown artist OR a european artist. Their music would have never been heard by me unless someone covered it and someone made a youtube video about it being the original. You wouldnt have known about them otherwise. The song is the same except for the artist singing and maybe the production value of the music video. Dont change a great song just because its a cover, you could make something great, or shoot your foot with a junk song. "you'd think elivs wrote that, and get all the royalties of that song" Well thats half true. Alot of the credits of who wrote that song is public knowledge. THe difference is the public isnt looking into that. You assume its the first time you heard it, so it must be that artist's original. Thats your mistake. As far as the royalties, its a legal battle thing. If the artist's family hears you taking credit, they can sue you. Who cares what the general public thinks, because they are ignorant. The people that need to know where to send the royalties know. Like you said, you wouldnt know it was a cover unless you was a fan of the original. The public doesnt need to know who the original is, they just need to know which version they like. You can pay for Mariah Carri's covers, because you like that version. You can also research and look into the original versions, and see if you like that one better. But you are paying for the version you like, the royalties and licenses arnt what you are paying for. the cover artist and the original artist are the ones paying for that.
Keep in mind, too, that there's a good chance the "original" versions of these songs were not written by the artists who originally recorded them. So, in a sense, even the "originals" are covers. That's definitely True!
Bernie Taupin. Elton John would be nothing without Bernie's lyrics

Whitney did quite a few covers too. But she made it her own.
With eternal gratitude to Clive Davis who picked sooo many of Whitney's songs.
P.P Arnold if you read itsang the original but it was written by Cat Stevens and he's not black. His dad was from Cyprus and his mom was Swedish

I'm impressed by your knowledge of the music industry. Your commentary is well thought-out & intelligent. Nice job....

Cissy Houston was her Mother and a back up singer for Elvis.
Took me a while to remember that from past reactions
Dionne Warwick was Whitney's cousin@@MugnifyRTS
Elvis wanted half of publishing for all the songs he did....no publishing is where the money is more so than the singer
Chris Cornell covered Michael Jacksons Billie Jean, you need to check it out. R.I.P. Sweet Music Man.
