To go with your love of awkwardness and mishaps in romance: so my current boyfriend and I had been obviously sweet on each other for months (well, obvious to everyone but each other) and when I had finally decided to ask him out, our mutual friend told me to hold off (she didn't say at the time but it was because he had also decided to ask me out the same day). The day that was all supposed to go down, I was heading downstairs to do laundry because I lived in a dorm hall and I run into him on the stairs. He looks up, sees me, goes to say something but trips over his words, and then trips up the stairs because he is so distracted. He says he was so focused on rehearsing in his head what he was going to say to ask me out that seeing me completely short circuited his brain.
“I love you” he sobbed “I-I-I love you” he continued to sob, tears running down his face She was covered in blood and the ruins were in ruins. Her hair clumped together with thick blood as she too had silent tears running down her face. She reached up, her hand cupping his face. He leaned into it letting another sob leave his mouth. Calling for help was futile, no one was left in this realm of existence. As her hand began to drop he leaned down to kiss her. Her half lidded eyes closed enjoying her last kiss. He pulled back, connecting their foreheads. More sobs left his mouth as he realised that her eyes didn’t open. He fumbled with her and checked her pulse in a hurry and when he realised there was none he lost it. Tears ran down his face, he let out wails and sobs that only could be described as his heart being torn in half. He dragged her close to him. With her in his arms he wailed out even more her cuddled close to his chest.
I love when characters kinda half mindedly say love you like when hanging up the phone, then they realize it and the other character says it back but like full force *I love you too* because its awwwww-kward Also, when the whole consent for kisses or whatever, I love when one just kinda says the person's name with kinda like a question in their tone and the other one just nods or says okay or yes or ANYTHING. Frickin love

@@ManiaMac1613 Not sure if root for are the words... but rather can understand him\her. I can't root for people who want to kill people because their wife was killed.
In my high-school AU for a storyline, there is a couple like this, A reporter for the Yearbook, assigned apprenticeship to the main character's love interest, is 6'5" and can be scary, his girlfriend is 5'0" and very cuddly with him.
I like (and am writing a book) where a villains assistant or lackey betrays their boss and joins the hero, and the slowly fall for each other. Is it just me?
My favorite romance trope: couples who’ve been together for a long time but flirt like it’s there first date (cute if it’s romantic, even cuter if it’s cheesy)
Hahah well, these can also work very well in establishing great platonic friendships (minus the intimate stuff) Haven't seen the show, but I love the way Crowley and Aziraphale act together in the book! You can tell that they have a really long history of knowing each other and its wonderful
I'm just really happy with what you said about the Enemies to Lovers trope, Jenna. I've often felt really out of place in feeling the same way. I don't mind the bickering rivals version! The Elizabeth/Darcy or Han/Leia types are fine! But when the dude has constantly been trying to murder our heroine, or is complicit in/wants to commit genocide, or has murdered children who trusted him... I can literally hear the brakes screeching in my head. It goes back to watching Xena for me as a pre-teen. I always felt really, really uncomfortable with Xena/Ares and it's never gone away, and then new romance/possible romance 'ships of the same type (though often with villains who've done worse than what Ares did) come along in fiction and I'm just... nope-ing right out like that octopus gif. Because it does ultimately feel abusive.
Your advice is helping me so much. Like making the love interest have their own life. After I watched the video that said that, I went back and came up with a second cast for my male one and gave him his own drama. You are a wonderful, helpful lady
I have been trying to figure out how my two partners (the love interest and main character) are going to really interact and how one of them would act in lovey dovey situations and this gave me so many ideas!! I am so excited to actually write it now that I got it! Yesss! Thank you, Jenna. I appreciate your existence lol
All of these made me smile so much! Romance is what I read for!!! Sci-Fi, mystery, historical, fantasy, I want romance in it all! Equal opportunity sexiness!!
Made me super happy about the first trope because is the main conflict of the couple in my novel: they can't be together because they even can't touch each other, one is a Death's servant, a soul collecter, and the other is an immortal girl who can see creatures that no one can. Immortality is supposed to be unnatural and immortals are rejected by Death's servants because of that, besides, the servants feel affection for someone is supposed to be forbidden. It's a dark fantasy romance and this video made me want to continue the story, thank you so much.
Jenna is my favorite human and probably the only person I’ll deliberately stop writing while encountering a problem and going “I wonder if Jenna has a video on this...”. I’ve never had that reaction with any other writing RUclipsr literally ever. So helpful and funny, she can capture anybody’s attention and she never seems to sound like she’s droning, and this video is a great example of it.
Anyone ever wrote 2 characters that you werent planning on being together but then you realize that they would make the best couple and start shipping them?
I also enjoy and love the romance genre but it has to have something creative, interesting or unique going on for it, other than the cliches. And yea I don't have a fav romantic trope I think, might prefer some tropes more than others tho, like guy hopelessly fazed, giddy, kilig, obsessed, in love with the girl and she reciprocates, just cuz a guy like that to an extent that you're attracted to in real life is so attractive, just mutual feelings and show of interest y'know. #4 "Can I?" - sweet/romantic 😳😳🤝🏻 or sexy/irreverent 🔥🔥🔥 #5 Awkwardness #7 "I love you‼️" - the dramatic proclamation of love #8 Snuggle up, Buttercup #10 Power couples - Syaoran x Sakura, esp. in animes, video games
Jenna: We already know enthusiastic consent is a mandatory staple of every healthy relationship, (angrily) RIGHT? 90% of romance writers, especially on Ao3 and wattpad: (sweats nervously)
Two words: Childhood. Friends. That's my personal favorite romance trope in fiction. Ever since I was little, I loved the trope of those two people who knew each other since they were pretty much babies and either basically instantly fell in love or slowly, over the course of growing up, realized they were in love. Kim and Ron? Love 'em. _Hermione_ and Ron? Love 'em. Jacuzzi and Nice (from an anime called Baccano)? Love 'em! Masaomi and Mikado? REALLY love 'em! That brings me to another, even better aspect to this trope: Somehow I love this trope even better when it's gay. Two dudes, friends since their toddler years, growing up together and one day just looking at each other and thinking, separately to themselves "Oh god...I think I'm in love with him..." and the ensuing awkwardness and nervousness between them as they stumble through their feelings. I like it with lesbians too (really, I'll eat up the Childhood Friend Romance trope no matter who it involves), but as a bisexual dude who's more into other dudes, I just find the adorable and relatable awkwardness of two gay guys who were best friends all their lives mutually becoming each other's gay awakening to be completely irresistible. Like, I'm just sitting here like "THEY'RE LITERALLY BEST FRIENDS! THEY'RE ALREADY PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER!"
I don't like romance as a main genre, but I love myself a good romantic subplot. So yeah, power couples are awesome! Especially battle couples. There's nothing more awesome than watching/reading two lovers kick ass side by side, having each other's backs and competely trusting in one another!
On the subject of awkward or fumbling romances, have you ever seen the show Firefly? It's an incredible show and I could talk about for a long time, but specifically the romance between fancy doctor Simon and dirty adorable mechanic Kayled,I think you'd adore it. Simon is so awkward and says the wrong things that make Kaylee storm off in a huff;it's adorable.
Yohannai the female version of cock blocking. Beaver is used as a crude metaphor to refer to a ladies vagina. So Beaver damming would be the female equivalent of cock blocking.
On #7: one of my TTRPG characters has been mute his entire life, his artificer friend makes him a magic amulet that allows him to speak while wearing it. Know what the first thing is he uses this newfound voice for? He finds the woman he's been dating for years now and he simply says "I love you". He'd been using telepathy to communicate with her up to this point, so he's expressed the sentiment before, but this is him actually saying it out loud for the first time. This is the very first thing he does with a new voice. Is that a dramatic proclamation of love?
'Aziraphale held out his hand. [...] Crowley took it.' - Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophesies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
1 Having to overcome obstacles make it harder to take things for granted. 4 "Can I?" is so sweet, I agree. 5 Laughing at awkward situations is good for you ... I think. 10 Helping each other hrow and "being more than the sum of parts" is alot of what relationships are about.
amazing video! my personal favorite trope though is just the pining for each other, good-natured whole-hearted pining filled with lovelorn gazing and chest aching and fluttering touches, that’s my shit. Reading about characters suffering over the profundity of their love for another person and then finding out their feelings are reciprocated after long months/years of suffering is everything i want in life

Oh, you would love my MCs' romance. A (female) spy from Small Kingdom falls in love with a princess from Big Empire. The best part? Big Empire has opressed Small Kingdom for decades now and the two nations are on the verge of war.
These are all awesome tropes that any author would be lucky to have in his or her novel. One trope I want to add for myself is the kind of romance with a shy protagonist. I always get nervous around flirtatious women, so to see my kind represented in fiction is a plus for me. Great video as always, Jenna! You make Wednesdays worthwhile. ^_^

He says he was so focused on rehearsing in his head what he was going to say to ask me out that seeing me completely short circuited his brain.
Bless you, child.
Omg , that's so cute.
"It's an old referenve because I'm in my 30's and completely out of touch."
Girl, same.
“I love you” he sobbed
“I-I-I love you” he continued to sob, tears running down his face
She was covered in blood and the ruins were in ruins.
Nashi You’re evil. My heart 😭
Whyy... Aaa:((
WHYYYYY😭😭😭
YOU.
WHYYYYYY MY HEART
The only romance trope I care about is people respecting each other
Boom!
Every single YA fan fiction on Wattpad: *sweats nervously*
“Tickle each other’s pikachus”
Well there’s something you don’t hear every day. Or hear at all from anyone aside from Jenna.
Btw who loves slow burn? I'm totally for the characters not realizing their feelings/hiding them/being afraid of them.
I love when characters kinda half mindedly say love you like when hanging up the phone, then they realize it and the other character says it back but like full force *I love you too* because its awwwww-kward
Also, when the whole consent for kisses or whatever, I love when one just kinda says the person's name with kinda like a question in their tone and the other one just nods or says okay or yes or ANYTHING.
Frickin love
The "can i" moments gets me every time. they are truly precious cinnamon rolls :,)
Hellooooo Jenna, i would love you to do a "best villain tropes" or how to create a good villain and basically everything related to villain. That would be a blast 🤩
This video already exists! Go watch :)
In my opinion, a really great villain should be someone you simultaneously root for while also desperately hoping to see fail.
@@ManiaMac1613 Not sure if root for are the words... but rather can understand him\her. I can't root for people who want to kill people because their wife was killed.
@@Apple-gh4hj or like... a lot of other people too! 🤣😅
[immediately adds everything on the list to his first try at romance] I got'cha, Jenna. I got'cha.
"Tickle each other's Pikachus"
What exactly was the inspiration behind this already I C O N I C quote?
just my weird brain XD
@@JennaMoreci Thought you might have seen some Gabriel Iglesias stand up comedy.
My favorite is a big, tall, absolute unit of a person and their absolute mouse of a partner! (Basically Ore Monogatari)
In my high-school AU for a storyline, there is a couple like this, A reporter for the Yearbook, assigned apprenticeship to the main character's love interest, is 6'5" and can be scary, his girlfriend is 5'0" and very cuddly with him.
“Maybe one of them’s super smart, and the other’s a great fighter…”
Sapphire and Ruby, respectively.
I'm guessing you're talking about the Steven's Universe stuff or whatever it is, but it kinda sounds like Pokémon Adventures as well.
I like (and am writing a book) where a villains assistant or lackey betrays their boss and joins the hero, and the slowly fall for each other.
Is it just me?
StarrySky+ Damn u stole my idea
My favorite romance trope: couples who’ve been together for a long time but flirt like it’s there first date (cute if it’s romantic, even cuter if it’s cheesy)
"Tickle each other pikachus"
*wOw*
The fact that most of these are used in the relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale in the book (and show) Good Omens makes my heart go wHOOS
Hahah well, these can also work very well in establishing great platonic friendships (minus the intimate stuff)
Haven't seen the show, but I love the way Crowley and Aziraphale act together in the book!
You’re a wizard, Jenna
You finally managed to make me return as soon as you upload a video
That got weird in a hurry.
**Get yr mind outta the gutter**
'Tickle each other's Pikachus. Oh my lord 😂😂😂 I absolutely love your videos: educational and effin funny. Lol
awww thank you so much!
I was having a bad time recently, so seeing your upload cheered me up. Thanks, Jenna.
awww I hope you feel better soon!
I already feel better. Your videos have that affect on me. You must be magic.
hello world SHES A MAGICAL CYBORG I NEED A BOOK ON THIS
5:08 Embarrass the shit out of my characters?... Lady, that's my entire writing philosophy in a nutshell!
I went a slightly different route. Main characters generally get a shit kicking and suffer.
@@grantmathieson650 That works too. In my head I call it "The Jim Butcher Way"! XD
Mine is making people fall in love with characters then mostly turning them into villains or killing them off.
"You already know that enthusiastic consent is a mandatory staple. RIGHT"
❤🧡💛💚💙💜
River Landon Knight+ [chuckles nervously]
"Tickling each others Pikachu's" legitimately caught me off guard
when casper said "can i keep you?" same vibes jenna was talking about with "can i?" I DIE EVERYTIME WITH PURE LUST
Your advice is helping me so much. Like making the love interest have their own life. After I watched the video that said that, I went back and came up with a second cast for my male one and gave him his own drama. You are a wonderful, helpful lady
Oh, come on. A Backstreet Boys reference won't date you too much.
(checks Wikipedia)
THEY'RE HOW OLD NOW!!?
THANK YOU I love the "there's only one bed" trope!!! I don't care if it's overused, I'm using in my current WIP and no one can stop me, darnit!!!
Yyyyyup! 😂
#4 "Can I?" - sweet/romantic 😳😳🤝🏻 or sexy/irreverent 🔥🔥🔥
#5 Awkwardness
#7 "I love you‼️" - the dramatic proclamation of love
#8 Snuggle up, Buttercup
#10 Power couples - Syaoran x Sakura, esp. in animes, video games
Jenna: We already know enthusiastic consent is a mandatory staple of every healthy relationship, (angrily) RIGHT?
90% of romance writers, especially on Ao3 and wattpad: (sweats nervously)
Okay but this list is absolutely on point
I love it when #8 and #9 are combined. But not in a creepy way
Two words: Childhood.
Jenna you literally uploaded this while I was writing my lead and love interest’s first kiss-you’re ACTUALLY A CYBORG! 😱
I don't like romance as a main genre, but I love myself a good romantic subplot.
So yeah, power couples are awesome! Especially battle couples. There's nothing more awesome than watching/reading two lovers kick ass side by side, having each other's backs and competely trusting in one another!
Awww Pedro the 🐧 is getting cuddles in the thumbnail!
Beaver Dammed...
Beaver
Dammed
I paused the video for 10 seconds to appreciate that metaphor... you’re in the correct line of work.
I don't think I get it... mind explaining?
Yohannai the female version of cock blocking. Beaver is used as a crude metaphor to refer to a ladies vagina. So Beaver damming would be the female equivalent of cock blocking.
I just can’t get over Jenna’s vocal range in her speaking voice. She could easily be a VA.
Yes! I found the channel recently and I love it!
awww thank you!
Jenna, I did not realise you are such a fangirl 😂 (and a badass cyborg at the same time, a very multi-talented writer!!!)
Love all these tropes too lmao Especially the three tops XD It seems kinda universal btw.
1:44 or like “I AM AN ANGEL AND YOU ARE A DEMON WERE HEREDITARY ENEMIES-“ I MEAN-
"GET THE BEHIND ME, FOUL FIEND......afteryou-"
'Aziraphale held out his hand. [...] Crowley took it.'
- Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophesies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
1 Having to overcome obstacles make it harder to take things for granted.
4 "Can I?" is so sweet, I agree.
5 Laughing at awkward situations is good for you ... I think.
10 Helping each other hrow and "being more than the sum of parts" is alot of what relationships are about.
Just wondering what the little plush penguin is called since they've been in the thumbnails a lot.
amazing video! my personal favorite trope though is just the pining for each other, good-natured whole-hearted pining filled with lovelorn gazing and chest aching and fluttering touches, that’s my shit. Reading about characters suffering over the profundity of their love for another person and then finding out their feelings are reciprocated after long months/years of suffering is everything i want in life
"Extreme conflict" and "Adorable romance" are two themes that go together like peanut butter & jelly
This is my favourite channel. I've watched many videos of what to do and what not to do but i get bored but Jenna not only teaches me something new but she makes me laugh whilst doing it.
Great video as always :) Love you Jenna!!
love you too!
Oh, you would love my MCs' romance. A (female) spy from Small Kingdom falls in love with a princess from Big Empire. The best part? Big Empire has opressed Small Kingdom for decades now and the two nations are on the verge of war.
I got excited when I heard Jenna say “I wanna see the good boy and the bad girl” because that’s basically my story
Alright, Y’Know how people always right those comments like “I was about to do such and such and then I saw Jenna had uploaded and was like Nevermind?
I never liked those comments very much but...
I was about to go roleplay when I saw Jenna had uploaded and I was Nevermind!
Edit: Also when I saw this I was like “Yep, Forbidden Romance.” Then Jenna confirmed it... Yeah.
I’m just writing for fun. I’m not good enough to write something publishable but I’m imaginative and writing novels is my outlet. You inspire me so much to keep going and you’re funny 😂 thank you!
Omg I’m early what to I do umm your an amazing person and author Jenna and I will always support you and your work. Keep being you! 💙
thank you so much!
I love all of these oh my gosh!!! Forced proximity, fake dating, enemies to lovers... and who DOESN’T love a declaration of love, big or small? This made me smile, thanks for sharing! 😃
7:45 Am I imagining things, or was that a Princess Bride reference?
I am ALL about her enthusiasm and witty quips! Love it!
Trope videos are some of my favorite videos.😍
I'm glad!!!
Bell ringed! Honestly your tropes and advices as well as listening to lores about George RR Martin's and Tolkien's worlds are making my writer's block go away. I finally started being ok with my ideas and even liking them! I made my first notes about a story in years (I was a passionate writer back then) and I am startin to be excited about writing! thank you, if I ever become a rich writers I'll buy you like 100 liters of wine
Oh shit. Writing can wait. Jenna always goes first😈
Oh my God 1 year later and I found this comment again
Oh good. I write your favorite tropes. That actually makes me happy. Someone besides my mom WOULD read my stories. lol :)
