ocular surface disease, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, thyroid eye disease, graves eye disease, systemic diseases linked to dry eye
As someone with severe RA, I can definitely attest to having moderately dry eyes. None of the optometrists I've seen have even seemed concerned about it, my rheumatologist is.
It would be really helpful if talk more in depth about the treatment options for dry eyes due to autoimmune diseases
I have severe dry eyes. I tried several things. If you are using better solutions let me know. Thankx
@@rreddy4640do you get any reflex tears like while crying or cutting onion?
I experience this before. I put lots of eye soothing drops in my eyes. Worked for me. I also got rid of mold out of my house, which made a major difference. No more dry eyes.
Autoimmune disease is probably what triggers my dry eyes. I am very prone to eyelid inflammation too. Thank you for bringing up this topic Dr. D
Look into chronic allergies.
Myesthenia Gravis, ptosis (droopy eyelid ) left eye, and dry eye of the left eye. Neurologist and optometrist say its unrelated but after a course of Prednisone, dry eye cleared up for months.
We were just talking about these things in school!!
Great stuff. I go to vision expo every year and I have Lambert Eaton Myasthenic system. 45 % of LEMS patients ARE MISDIAGNOSED WITH MG
Good discussion. 👍
After years of dry eye treatment iI was diagnosed with IgG4, a less known auto immune disease that commonly attacks the eyes.
Thank you for sharing!
My problem was allergy. I had chronic allergies which led to nerve problem and the aqueous dry eye. The new theory on allergy is that allergy is not a disease. Allergies are a protective hyperactivity to too many chemicals in the environment. My problem started with contact lenses which keep oxygen from reaching the eye and hold allergens on the eye. I wish I had never used contact lenses.
I have lupus and RA and diabetes
I was diagnosed with uveitis in my right eye. I was given prednisolone. Some days after I felt double vision in my left eye too along with burning sensation in eyes. I am also HLA-B27 positive. What should I do to revert the double vision in my left eye. My right eye is normal right now.
I have autoimmune disease in remission but it pops up somewhere else in the body. I had UC now it’s rosacea and MGD.
Are tear plugs recommended for someone with RA and dry eye? I’ve heard conflicting things?
Lupus SLE, Sjogrens, Thyroid, for me. Blepharitis, and cataracts. Sooo sick of all of this. Now I have facial optic shingles,...HELP!
do you get any reflex tears like while crying or cutting onion?
@@medhikasingh6327 I'm not sure what you mean 🤔. I finally got puncta plugs put in, they have made a difference. Having cataract surgery at end of January.
I couldn’t find out what kind of autoimmune disorder I have. So after my LASIK I had not only dry eyes but corneal Neuralgia. Its painful and migraines. So Vital tears/ serum drops. Preservative free eye drops including PF steroids drops gives temporary relief. But I can’t use computers still. Fee minutes on phone with F14 light blocking glasses.

I have SLE and Sjogrens--my eyes felt like sandpaper in them. Used plugs but 1 came out. Also got restasis and works wonderfully! At 12 hours you can tell I'm due as eyes feel like sandpaper again but no issues when I take in AM and PM.
Wind bothers me also but use refresh Liquigel OTC drops and I'm in great shape. Been getting ocular migraines so going with transitions lenses with Anti Reflective coating to solve this. So far my eye Doc has been spot on. Thanks so much for these videos as a nurse I think you do a wonder job of presenting eye issues and find it refreshing someone takes the time to educate the public on much of these questions we all have!!
Hi
Sad to face this kind of situation. I have severe dry eyes and similar with Sjogrens syndrome. Let me know effective solutions.
Thanks
@@rreddy4640 rest assured is wonderful 😀 highly recommend
Impressive to see someone say that Restasis works wonderfully for them! How long have you been using Restasis? I believe it’s usd should be limited to a few months?
@@arthursimsa9005 Not at all true--I'm a nurse and can tell you dry eye doesn't go away with basic eye drops. Restasis is for folks who have chronic dry eye and MUST use the rest of their lives. Tear ducts don't function correctly and if eye isn't lubricated cornea problems result among other problems!! I have used for over 5 years now as I have Sjogrens and Systremic Lupus and this is a blessing. It's by RX and every year my eye doc exams eyes and is pleased with the results. If you look in a PDR you will also see it's got zero limitations on length you use...
Just chiming in to say “same”. I was recently diagnosed with SS and believe we need to look at SLE possibly too. Each ANA is higher concentration but other tests like SJO labs & symptoms don’t correlate. My bloodwork is not 100% specific anything but some continued ai going on. Current rheumatologist believes it’s SS.
I already had autoimmune (IBD) for several years & thanks to it & recurring cdiff, I no longer have a colon. Talk about fighting to stay hydrated daily…
I can also really feel when it’s coming up on the 12 hour restasis mark but it has stopped the “I can’t open my eyes in the morning without serious help from wipes” gunk. My eyes still burn and are painful too so I use preservatives free tears during the day as well (ok per opthalmalogist as long as not within 15 min of doses).
My vision was also severely affected this past year. I now have cataracts and additionally, glaucoma starting in one eye too. I’m only 56 so I wasn’t expecting those quite yet…
This channel has been very helpful (and in a lighthearted way which is refreshing).
can it cause Nodular Scleritis ?
I have dry eyes from past 2 year. Several doctors gave eye drops. But nothing has worked for me. They say there js something inside the body that is causing inflammation, please help me with my problem as I am unable to do my daily office work
Try to consult an eye expert/specialist - also a specialist in internal medicine. 🌹
I like to know if it causes dry mouth and burning eyes
What about Hashimoto thyroid? I have hyper phase atm and my eyes kinda tend to wrinkle in the corners feeling swollen &dry in the mornings especially. Is it connected or is it dehydration related (I can forget to drink water sometimes 😣)
Thanks Dr D.
I have had and do have several autoimmune diseases ( graves disease, SLE, sjogren's syndrome,RA, GCA). At present the dry eye symptoms I'm experiencing are severe: pain at night , itching and gritty feeling all day. Restasis and steriod drops haven't helped much after a month of treatment. I hate to assume the worst 😢😢; and so frightened by possibly a poor prognosis

Is it possible to develop a blinking reflex due to dry eyes? I developed a reflex a year ago around the same time my eye sight significantly decreased - would a blinking reflex damage that position of the eye within the socket, due to excessive hard uncontrollable blinking?
Would you recommend Lasik or laser eye surgery if they have controlled Symptoms of their Autoimmune Conditions?
The best video ever for my rheumatoid arthritis related dry eyes and rosacea that none of my Gps in the uk could even diagnose let alone treat , sadly in the uk we have something called : the NHS but I personally have had no positive experience with the NHS because none of my auto immune problems have been dealt with in a helpful way, for instance when I had my first iritis attack when I was 25 years old I went to see the emergency dr at charring cross hospital in London but after examination the eye specialist told me that there was nothing wrong with my eyes ! The next day I lost my eyesight in the right eye and my eye was twice the size and totally red and almost blind so they admitted me and injected my eye with steroids and I was hospitalised for ten days but after I was discharged they didn’t tell me that my rheumatoid arthritis was the cause of my my iritis so I wasn’t referred to a rheumatologist and subsequently I had further uveitis in my other eye and then in both eyes and only 5 years ago at the age of 56 I developed such a flare up all over my legs that I was hospitalised and only then did they diagnosed my auto immune disease and offered Humira which sadly I couldn’t tolerate , thank you so much for your very precise explanation of the specific eye disease called dry eyes .🙏🏻☺️

My brother is suffering from RA since he was 13 now he is in age of 49. Unfortunatrly the desease never slow down and always made us to deeplh ferl its existance, he could never had a normal life wo support of somebodyelse and mostly could not go out of our flat even his room, after attacking on his joints and causing severe deformaties, recent years he diagnosed with uveitis, he lost vision on left eye and now very upset with having a vision loss on thr right eye as well, we periodically visiting doctors, he is having HUMIRA pen and eyedroos but it certainly not helping his CRP value is about 95-100, and I feel terrible not being able to help him
I have a question.. is there any linked between IBS and eyes?? Because, i have IBS, my vision got blurred.. that's why am asked such a question
My rheumatoid arthritis caused me a ulcer on my pupil
My mother has severe eye pain. She does not have “dry eye “.Nobody have an idea as to what’s causing it.She’s been to about 5eye specialist.Any suggestions?
I Have Alopecia Areata its Auto immune disorder its that effect my eye?
Are there tests for Sjogrens Syndrome?
What if I have none of the severe autoimmune but just the red eye in only left eye? For a brief time I had slight RA, but after a round of prednisone for a month, my joint pain went away. But since the last 4 months, basically even after the joint pain has gone away, the red left eye persists. My rheumatologist has not been able to give satisfactory answer, just keeps increasing and tapering the prednisone doses and I'm frustrated.
How often do you work with auto immune specialists? Do they refer to you or vice versa? Ive read that dry eye auto immune goes unnoticed by eye surgeons as they are in business for surgery patients. Your knowledge & expertise could help pair up patients with a complimentary treatment with an autoimmune specialist who has experience with eyes. If you know of any good autoimmune docs, please give us information on them. So few dry eye doctors in my area, so I'm grateful for your channel.
What kind of situation are you facing. Are you having Sjogrens syndrome. Severe dry eyes. If using effective solutions. Let me know. I have severe dry eyes. Thanks
I have Graves. If I choose to get my thyroid removed or have radiation Iodine treatment will I still have dry eyes afterwards? I have heard it helps regulate hormones, but the eyes are still affected?
Hello Lori, don’t removed your thyroid... try to start getting Iodine treatment, (not Iodine radiation, unless your condition is so extreme,) but I would suggest you to seek more info about how to reverse your Graves Decease and seek for Dr. Erick Berg videos. I was diagnosed with Grave Deceased and had my thyroid removed 25 years ago. Now dealing with eye dry syndrome, allergic skin reactions, bone issues (osteopenia)... If you can save your thyroid, save it.
I have hypothyroidism and have developed a dry eye condition. It used to flare up occasionally but now it's pretty much constant. It's especially bad when using the computef. I'm on a lot of medications for different things which probably isn't helping.

@@medhikasingh6327 yeah that is unaffected. Cutting onion is extremely difficult, it's too painful so I have to get someone else to do it.

Mine is hashimotos .

How is the editing coming along for the exam video?
Graves and early markers for sjogrens. Removed gluten and noticing improvement in dry eyes and mouth. Optometrist not trained enough to link and treat imo. You have to really push western medicine to consider natural remedies it’s sad.
