Wow! I am glad I now live in Arizona and don't have to deal with rain all that often. I tent camp and for years when I lived in the Midwest it always rained when I was camping. I have been to Victoria and it is a beautiful place, especially in the summer when the sky is clear. It is so green. Thanks for bringing me along to the sound of water on the beach and on the river.
@Gretchen_Trouble .. how was your RTT in this downpour? I was camping further east near Shawnigan but sleep inside a Leer cap. Considering a roof top tent but only if it will handle our rainforest weather.
@@ryanadventureeverything8758 @MikeR55 @GrizzlyDude That tent was honestly a lifesaver. It rained so much my swag would have been a soggy mess. There I was tiny bit of water ingress through the zippers, but no pooling or anything. I was running the diesel heater so condensation wasn't a problem at all, even with the two dogs. Definitely the hardest part of the RTT is getting 70lb Charlie up there, but currently looking at picking up some iKamper stairs. Still more testing to do but so far I'd say I'm pretty much converted.
My Walmart special Ozark Trail tent has kept me bone dry on many trails in Colorado up to 12,000 feet and lots of Rain. 😂 That's crazy a high dallor tent like that leaking. Send it back on a warranty.
If you’re looking at just replacing the rtt, check out 23 zero, they make some nice looking quality tents. Sounds like you’re almost in need for a GFC topper tho. Safe, dry, secure, accessible, with rtt.
I know you have a lot of nice gear and that crazy truck, but your videos feel the most like an everyperson's kind of trip. Very approachable and fun to watch!
I have a Power Wagon with a SoftTopper ($900). I sleep in the bed when camping and practically no water in heavy rain. No crazy nylon flapping when it's windy. I've found that this works best for me. You need to go PW bro!
Yes unfortunately condensation is an issue always due to the heat build up inside and the cooler weather outside - like how windows in your house will get moisture on the inside on a cold night. I’ve found those little containers of moisture absorbing pellets work a treat in my canopy box - may pay to try a couple in there. Only $3 at our dollar stores here in Sydney Australia. 👍👍
Sous vide is my secret weapon for camp cooking, or at least preparation. The chicken thighs are a great example in this video. You know the chicken is cooked 100%. Also, you don't have to worry about raw chicken contaminating your ice chest or fridge. Lots of things you can sous as well. I highly recommend for meal prep when camping.
A friend recently used his Condor at NC outer banks in one of the hardest rains I have ever camped in. Rained several inches over a couple of hours. Folks in ground tents flooded and had to bail and ride it out in cars. Strong gusty winds accompanied rains. He stayed dry in the Condor.
When I first saw RTTs I was like man that's cool, but as an avid camper the more I thought about it the less I liked the idea. Want to run to town or go on a trail ride, gotta pack up camp, swamp the vehicle and have to spend a night waiting for an evac or recovery, tents in the swamp with the rig, high winds, and it's going to be harder to find somewhere to setup with a natural wind break. A real tent or hammock setup is way more versatile, in the winter or shoulder seasons I swap out my hammock for my hot tent, definitely not going to burning a woodstove in a RTT, in really bad storms or if my tent becomes damaged etc.., it's easy to fly a tarp over top for more water resistance, a lot more difficult to do that when you're tent is way up on top of your rig, probably near impossible without a ladder to reach an appropriate height. Sorry you had such a wet sleep, that roof definitely needs some kind of support, either through poles, or some kind of guy lines that pull it taught. Seems like a designer oversight. I've seen many RTTs that seem like they're fully designed to look cool but not really well through out as an actual shelter system.
My best friend lives out in sooke im from washington. I have pictures right there at the jordan river area. I recognized it immediately and weve been exploring out at refrew. Such a cool area 😂❤ I'll be heading that direction in a couple weeks to go camping with her.

Seems like a silly question but are you sure it’s set up properly, there is a lot of water coming in to the tent. Was it purchased new or used, sorry for all the questions but I purchased (haven’t picked it up yet) the Roofnest Condor Overland 2 XL. There has to be some sort of explanation for this tent to be leaking like that. Was it put away wet and it then possibly froze splitting a seam or something? There has to be a valid explanation as to why. Keep us posted Casey, thanks for the videos.
I am not sure why but it accumulated a massive pool on the roof which is why it was leaking and thats what I pushed off. This was the biggest rain storm ive had it in. It seems like the center is sagging and then collecting water. Im working on a video about the tent.
@@Casey250 The budget tent beside you that cost 4 or 5 times less than yours seem to withstand the storm so clearly it’s a Roofnest issue. Thanks for keeping us informed. Great video mate, enjoyed it. Cracks me up though how you guys over there call your utility vehicles “trucks” 🤣🤣 Here in Oz, unless you’re 4.5 tonne or over, you’re not a truck. Keep up the good work 👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
There is an easy fix. Just buy a thick tarp that you would use on the ground on a ground tent. Put that sucker overtop and you won’t have any issues with rain coming in.
When you spend 5k on a rooftop tent the last thing you should be worried about is it leaking. Putting a tarp over top of it shouldn’t even be necessary especially when the budget tent beside had no problems handling the rain. Very disappointing to see an expensive rtt like that leaking. The basic function of a tent is to keep you dry!
@@ctk3873 well considering he didn’t have any other protection from the elements at all just get a big one that covers a large area. We used to do major group camping and had the like 30 by 30 overhead tent with 8 inch poles. No rain ever lol.
@@jr23kid The $5000 tent is the protection! That’s why he bought it, to keep him dry. You’re totally missing the point. The budget tent beside him didn’t have any protection either and was fine! At the beginning of the video when he was showing the inside of the tent it was all wet. He said it was condensation. It wasn’t condensation it was water! He then said that the hard top was full of water and it was sloshing around inside of it. He wanted to drill a hole in it to allow the water to drain out of it. That is not normal and means there is a leak in the hard cover. Nobody takes there mattress out of the tent in fear of it getting wet with condensation. If you’re not in the tent there will not be any condensation. So he is very well aware of the leak.
for canopy im looking at overland vehicle systems one that theyre about to release. I dont have a jeep yet but researching everything for when i get it
@@Casey250 I've been using the new "Zebra" tent from Novsight for a few months. I finally got to test it out in wind/rain at the SAVE Expo in Florida a few weeks ago. It kept me bone dry for three days, with off and on rain showers throughout the weekend. Might be an option to check out.
Do you think the newest Roofnest Sparrow 2 pop up tent with its flat, hard top going straight up on all sides, do you think that would do a better job of keeping water out?
I had this tent and had All the same issues. Hunk of junk. I drilled some holes to release water and sealed the top. And it worked ... But got rid of it anyways
My Girlfriend just bought a roofnest condor 2 xl Overland.. its currently sitting in my garage because it leaks when closed up.. $5000 down the drain, and she bought a 23Zero used with no issues!!
That’s too bad about the Roofnest leaking. I purchased the Overland Condor XL. I never picked it up but went in and canceled it. Too many people with leaking issues! I have never seen a tent leak like Casey’s did. Before I went into cancel mine I checked out the Roofnest Condor that was set up in the store and the centre point of the roof was sagging a good foot which made my mind up to cancel my order. Very disappointing but there is no way I wanted to go through what Casey went through. I think Ikamper Skycamp 3.0 might be the way to go.
Sorry to see the water ingress in your tent. At least you weren’t cold overnight. What is the rest of Gretchen’s callsign, I couldn’t make out her suffix. I guess i could google some
I did a bedslide and canopy. Was considering a decked system at first. After upsizing my fridge and seeing the price of the matching fridge slide I decided to slide the whole damn thing. So far so good (I think Gretchen did the same!). Oh, that roofnest is no bueno…. Appreciate the knowledge share. Editing as I go here…. I Always chuckle when I hear Kowitz’ theme song in other vids.
Yup! I'm super happy with the Bedslide & SmartCap combo! I do like the idea of the Decked system, but I'm already too short for my truck, so that would make the rest of my bed pretty much unusable.😂
Love this area! Sucks about the roof top tent though! I don’t think any tent no matter how much you pay is safe from leaking. Or maybe just the design of that one ? I bought a knock off clam shell and it hasn’t leaked yet but when it’s like that it’s vanlife for me !😂
Well there is a GFC for sale on the lower mainland right now on FB marketplace. Also capit has an alucab explorer canopy for clearance that's also a good deal. Totally not looking right now for my gladiator
@@Casey250 I have multiple different Mudmasters they are perfect for outdoors. It’s awesome you have a Demonator now love the whining from the supercharger
I am not an camping expert but why most of campers are using this type of tents and not the ones like Maggiolina? To me thy look more confy and rainproof.
The joys of condensation everywhere. You know your in rainforest country. Shoulda had the diesel heater plumed in. Looked like Gretchen had one set up?
Why would you not check to see if that hard shell tent was in good condition before you'd go on a trip .. Like put it up a few days to see if it had issues ????????????????????
Haven’t used my Conor yet, have had it for about 2 years and have not used it in the rain yet. If it leaks like that I will be going to Roofnest and have some ass!
So this tent you ran on this trip ... Is that the one in the Cheap vs Expensive video? Or is Gretchen running that one? And how did they fair in that beautiful BC weather? (Folks from Washington State would know what its like) ... You may mention it cuz im at 25:38. Maybe thats another video subject? You and Gretchen talking of how the tents held up in sour weather. They ALL work great on nice weekends and its the weather like this that we all wonder about (how they hold up). And how would an expensive one do in that weather... Like your Alu-Cab. ... I'm surprised you don't have an awning! That's the real reason we have the awning, not really for shade, but for when the skies open up on us.
I am running the Topoak (the budget one). It held up pretty well considering how much it rained, but I was also running my diesel heater, so that kept it warm and dry inside. I did get a small amount of water ingress from the zippers, but no pooling or anything.
@@Gretchen_Trouble nothing like Casey had to deal with! Ha ha I wondered about pre-water proofing them like some backpackers do with their tents? Like spray on stuff at the start of the season... And probably at least once during the season
Locked gate and the backcountry closed. Welcome to Vancouver Island with the all powerful logging companies keeping British Columbians out of (our) really cool places. I understand why we have to keep people out in the fire season but they've gated all the forestry campsites all winter (from Cowichan to Port Alberni at least) rendering beautiful and safe places unusable. Really makes it challenging for the average person to get their kids out winter camping, when you can have a fire. Not interested in Provincial sites at $35. a night with all the masses. Its madning for those of us who grew up here and heartbreaking too.
@@Casey250 Ya, it's sad but true. Rapidly increasing population plays a big part. Didn't really want to advertise North Is. too much to the mainlanders (joking a bit🤐) because you're right, more Crown land. Lots of folks fail to realize just how big our rock is with well over a 100 miles of island playground North of Campbell River. Cheers.
My iKamper lost a fight with a mall parking lot overhang. After seeing this video, I'm 100% sure I am done with roof top tents. Officially shopping for a trailer.
Boy that tent sucks , i have a $40 colman walmart ground tent been in really heavy rain and been dry all night . I would be getting my money back on that tent , no excuse for all that water..
Not a great showing by Roofnest that's for sure. And while I'm sure Roofnest will reach out to you and do the right thing, I have to wonder if non-famous average folks would fare the same. And while I love the look of RTTs, I'm a bit more practical and stick with a Gazelle T-4 that's never once let me down in any weather--rain, wind, thunderstorms, etc, and it affords a ton of living space when I'm out solo. Easier to get up 3x a night to take care of business, too (:::grumbles in Geezer:::).
@@Casey250 If they don't respond within hours to a social media influencer with over 73,000 subscribers, offering to replace a crazy-expensive and obviously defective product, well, that's just shameful and they're asking to get absolutely eviscerated online and shunned by potential customers. If it were me, I'd be looking at my legal options given the price of that tent. But certainly give them the chance to make things right. This is a relatively small market and a bad reputation is forever.
Looks like you need to put a rush on that bivy bag to keep you dry in the tent lol, all seriousness though getting dripped on while sleeping is its own level of hell.

We used to do major group camping and had the like 30 by 30 overhead tent with 8 inch poles. No rain ever lol.
@@jr23kid
The $5000 tent is the protection!
I dont have a jeep yet but researching everything for when i get it
The Snazziator looks so cool with the matching cap. Great video. We’re getting petty excited see explore the island this summer.
😁
Snazzinator 😂😂😂😂 whelp that's that for names.
@@Casey250i like it!
I'm a big fan of Gretchen's jeep, mine is the same color.❤
Sounds snazzy
Great video Casey!! That sucks about the tent , time for a wedge on the Demonator. Here’s a little tip for your fuel hungry truck. Keep em coming.
Bro, thanks so much! The Demonator tent upgrade hunt is on
@@Casey250 I've been using the new "Zebra" tent from Novsight for a few months. I finally got to test it out in wind/rain at the SAVE Expo in Florida a few weeks ago. It kept me bone dry for three days, with off and on rain showers throughout the weekend. Might be an option to check out.
Make a swing out tire rack like a regular Jeep Wrangler for the back of your gladiator
Ulu knife, traditionally Inuit woman's multi-use cutting-scraping tool.
Great for cutting up fresh herbs, slicing pizza.
ya that think is pretty slick!
Do you think the newest Roofnest Sparrow 2 pop up tent with its flat, hard top going straight up on all sides, do you think that would do a better job of keeping water out?
I guess I wont be buying a roofnest.
I had this tent and had All the same issues. Hunk of junk. I drilled some holes to release water and sealed the top. And it worked ... But got rid of it anyways
Wave crashing on the beach oh man awesome night sleep
i got the same gerber knife, love it.
My Girlfriend just bought a roofnest condor 2 xl Overland.. its currently sitting in my garage because it leaks when closed up.. $5000 down the drain, and she bought a 23Zero used with no issues!!
Stay tuned for this weeks review....
Another guy on the gladiator forum had the same problems with his tent, too, same company
for your spare you could do a swing away hitch mount tire carrier?
my boy high as a kite :)
Sorry to see the water ingress in your tent. At least you weren’t cold overnight. What is the rest of Gretchen’s callsign, I couldn’t make out her suffix. I guess i could google some
Im not sure of the top of my head but I am sure you can find it the Rubicon series, lots of shots there.
@@Gretchen_Trouble what’s the awning-like thing-a-ma-jiggy you had off the back to keep you out of the rain?
Thinking that’s a wrap for that rooftop tent. That’s definitely not good.
Plans are under works lol
Love this area! Sucks about the roof top tent though! I don’t think any tent no matter how much you pay is safe from leaking. Or maybe just the design of that one ? I bought a knock off clam shell and it hasn’t leaked yet but when it’s like that it’s vanlife for me !😂
That’s weird how much the tent leaked. I have a roof nest condor xl and been through some down pours and not a single drop came through.
I am not sure why it is accumulating on the roof and pooling like that.
Well there is a GFC for sale on the lower mainland right now on FB marketplace. Also capit has an alucab explorer canopy for clearance that's also a good deal. Totally not looking right now for my gladiator
I really like my Alucab on my JL so far.
Casey it’s nice to see you rocking a Casio GG-B100 Mudmaster 👍🏽
It's the Demonator watch :)
@@Casey250 I have multiple different Mudmasters they are perfect for outdoors.
It’s awesome you have a Demonator now love the whining from the supercharger
That was a good video
Thank you!
Are roll out canopies not a thing in the states? Ie google rhino rack sunseeker (in regards to comment on usable space outside when pissing down)
Crazy wet, if its that wet i say screw it,i sleep in the drivers seat of the taco, but i do bring a heavy duty 10x10 pop up
I love camping in the rain, and the short trips are great chances to test gear.
I am not an camping expert but why most of campers are using this type of tents and not the ones like Maggiolina? To me thy look more confy and rainproof.
Are you running a cogbelt? Supercharger whine at low rpm is sweet
Whatever came on it, but its a smooth pully.
The joys of condensation everywhere. You know your in rainforest country.
Shoulda had the diesel heater plumed in. Looked like Gretchen had one set up?
She did. It is a challenge with condensation. Even with wide open windows.
Glue a sliver of pipe over the power button on the fridge to create a gate
Ya - thats a good idea.
Glad I did not buy a roofnest.
Do you use premium fuel in the demon eater? And how much per litre is it today after April 1?
I usually try to get 94 octane if I can. I don't look at the price anymore.
Why would you not check to see if that hard shell tent was in good condition before you'd go on a trip .. Like put it up a few days to see if it had issues ????????????????????
Great video! What camera are you filming your first-person shots with?
Entire video is shot on a DJI pocket 3
@@Casey250 dude, that's amazin... thank you
Definition of “all the gear but no idea”
What’s the bed topper/cap brand and model on the maroon Gladiator?
its a RSI Smart Cap
@@Casey250 some don’t look good on gladiators but that one does
Nothing like closing off crown land, should be available generally to all citizens but nope, keep us contained.
That's some quality and expensive gear....everyone should buy it. 🤡
Lol if you don't like the weather in bc wait a minute that was a saying an old boss always said when we were brushing for the fiber optic lines

Thanks for talking me out of spending thousands of dollars on a roof top tent!
There is a wide array of experiences with the different RRT's ive tried.
You should christen Gretchen’s truck the Cherry Bomb!!!
I got lucky with my falcon but Roofnest's are garbage. When i get my trailer built I'm going with James Baroud
That is one tent on my test of ones to try still.
Casey did you fill up gas in Port Renfrew? Just thinking if so no need for the extra fuel 🤷♂️
No, as I wasn't sure they had 91+ octane.
@@Casey250ah good point eh.
How much are you gonna sell your decked system for?
Haven’t used my Conor yet, have had it for about 2 years and have not used it in the rain yet. If it leaks like that I will be going to Roofnest and have some ass!
But umberella😆💃
$15 tarp and some bunjies
Oh shit look who got a new truck
Who?

Now for the ultimate question. How did the topoak do?
Gretchen had a diesel heater in it so it stayed dry from condensation. It had a bit of moisture on the zippers she said.
Awning is coming but it exceeds the weight of the Rhino Rack so i'm contemplating options. I think the overland umbrella has been working well lol!
100% - this is why I don't go out much on the island. North is better as it is still crown land.
Cheers.
What about a tray for the entire bed?
Great video! Crap tent. Cheers from Australia
My iKamper lost a fight with a mall parking lot overhang. After seeing this video, I'm 100% sure I am done with roof top tents. Officially shopping for a trailer.
You're not the 1st youtuber sharing water intrusion issues from a Roofnest, different model also
Boy that tent sucks , i have a $40 colman walmart ground tent been in really heavy rain and been dry all night . I would be getting my money back on that tent , no excuse for all that water..
this is why i sleep INSIDE my car :)
Honestly if I paid that much for a tent that leaked id be pretty upset..
Nice little outing despite the fowl weather. Nice haircut too. 👍💦🌲🤙
I'm guessing your North of where ever ... We still call it miles not Kilometers LOLLOLLOL!!!!!
Doubt i'll ever hear from them.
Looks like you need to put a rush on that bivy bag to keep you dry in the tent lol, all seriousness though getting dripped on while sleeping is its own level of hell.
no kidding lol.
Lol thats what your demonator get.
