2023 and here we are, still vibing!!! 🎶
Brilliant. I looked for this music again and wondered where these school kids are today 2024. Andy Narell is one of the best at this.
I am a Trinidadian and love this cool jazz vibe thing of Andy. Really very nice indeed.. easy going ...many thanks Andy for this interpretation ...you have a Trinidadian soul.
what I am tripping on is how the kids are enjoying what they are doing. They sound good to me....Let us sit back and listen to music that makes us temporarily forget our troubles...Thank GOD FOR GIFTS HE HAS GIVEN TO US.
abasaqedi😂😂
This is so wholesome. Just a bunch of precious human beings making music and enjoying themselves. Thanks so much, folks. Good music done right is always enjoyable. =)
Thank you🙏 gentlemen
Thank you🙏 Texas University.
About time all you institutions turned up!
It is YOUR democracy too, we are fighting for.
Once you get hooked by the joyous sound of Andy Narell's music , you stay hooked.
I discovered Stickman over 30 years ago and then learnt to play pan by listening to Narell songs in my own unique way..
Beautiful🇹🇹
This is an awesome version of coffee street, and I love that all these kid are having fun playing it. Their energy is reflected bin the music 👍🏾
Awesome!!!!!! I really love this version of Coffee Street! These kids really enjoying what they're doing and for me this is what give that wonderful feeling to this music. As venezuelans we're feel steel band like homeland music too since Trinity & Tobago is one of our neighbor countries and has a big influence on music in the eastern side of my country.... I really love it...Thanks to Andy and thanks to the boys and girls of UNT College of Music
Wow! Absolutely beautiful, am a trini and ah love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of the greatest tunes that didn't win the Trinidad and Tobago panorama.
It never died.
Great. I love Andy's music. He is a great panist andcomposer. This is his masterpiece.
Hi am Carlon one of the Original Tenor players when andy made this song. In Florida now and i still remember the solos. I miss you Andy and your Vision. Skiffle Bunch Lower Coffee street my second home
A perfect balance of steel and horns. Brilliant.
Hi Carlon, really lovely relaxed vibe going on here and very well played by all of you. My Dad wrote a lot about the history of the Pan now in library of Congress Washington by Roderick Thomson. He grew up in Belmont Port of Spain the birth place of the Tdad Pan. Kudos to you all he loved Any's work too. Fab , miss him too.
I love Andy music, to me it does not matter where he's from, his arrangement always brings life to any piece he play, I had the honer of playing some of it I love it.
It's public knowledge Andy has been granted honorary Trini status. He loved trini culture and showcased it in the USA.
Of course. Music is universal and to be shared by all ...I agree with you .
@@malinveronique188 This is true, but why the all-white band in a university with more then 50% non-white students? Leading to stupid callous and racist statements like Paul E Marshallʻs below
I wonder if anyone noticed that steeldrums are the only instrument when played ,that the players seem to be enjoying just as much as the audience that is listening.
Bout' time! Andy Narell represents pan in the modern age, so cool!!!
Wow! Another unforgetable gem from the UNT School of Music. Kudos to all!
Andy, You deinitely possess a reincarnated soul of a Trinidadian, believe me, you are great, I mean really talented , a gifted brother. I can listen to you for hours, spread your talent brother.
LOL!!
He learned his craft from an Antiguan
Coffee Street is an amazing composition and this performance is remarkable. I could watch it every day and see and hear something new. Thank you. J. Paul Blake
Andy I Met Your Brother Jeff IN San Francisco, year's ago he give me one of his:C D, coffee street , is where I am from.you and Jeff is not only gifted musician, but possess a great personality!
Nice to hear the electric bass playing the the same bass line aa the bass pans! It gives a better appreciation and quality to the bassline!
Excellent!... always love to hear this piece of music.... Andy’s got the pan in his bones.... I don’t care where he’s from!.... I am Trini...... and I love this music!... period!...
Andy, your authentic love of calypso comes through very powerfully in this arrangement. Very deep and intrinsically moving. I will love to jam with you one day....
Instead of making negative comments , enjoy the music. He has a different way of playing and arranging. Anywhere he goes,he always mentions his mentor Ellie Mannette.
I agree
I can't even find any negative comments.
There seems to be a lot of envy as regards Andy's music. I am a great fan and I grew up in the West Indies hearing calypso pan. Andy has brought pan into other streams of music in a dominant way. Spyro Gyra's Morning Dance, Bill Wither's Just the Two of Us and some of the offerings from Ralph MacDonald gave us glimpses of what was possible but that space was left empty for a long time. Andy has helped fill that void and others are starting to follow. He should be viewed as a trail blazer and not denigrated because he stole the emperor's clothes. The emperor was not wearing them!! Listen to him with Anita Bonan on Quaquaraquaqua and playing David Rudder's Nuff Respect and you will see he is allowing pan to stretch its legs as more than just a novelty instrument. And if you want to hear living proof that Andy is not the only one doing something wonderfully different with and for pan music check out Pan Jazz Conversations which is an excellent jazz album by Clive Alexander. Open your minds and listen to the music and forget about who was born where.
Well done Andy, the band with the brass section played well and sound great; I really like your projects.
Wonderful! Really enjoy how much fun everyone is having.
Just lovely, I could listen to this for hours!
No truer words...same here!
I do listen for hours!
Awesome job! Always good to see Andy Narrell.
He's got the style down Mon. Let de rum flow and de beautiful island ladies dance!
Great 😊😊👌😊😊 orchestration
Congratulations to Andy
Really appreciate this music✌
Larger than life, Andy
The amazing Mark Walker on drums is always great to hear!
Mark Walker is an Awesome drummer! I love when he gets together with Andy Narell, they play so well together!!
Love it!!!
To all the Haters, I'm from TNT, Andy and the young youth's are playing pan!,And not beating pan!
The music is being played and everyone is enjoying themselves immensely. That's marvelous :)
If the inventors of instruments like the trumpet, violin and others were narrow minded, think of how the much poorer the music world would have been. While it is always be good to be proud of one's culture this effort should be appreciated not condemned.
Hi 👋 to All 👍= Fabulous happy Music 🤪- unusual type band from a University cheers 🥂 to all = from - Wales U.K.
i remember that gig in Vitry sur Seine in 2004 with Calypsociation and you, Andy as the pan leader of that band. Laurent Lalsingué played too.
I am truly surprised that there isn’t a person of color in the band given that the steel drum is a West Indian creation. I do however, appreciate the fact that the students are keeping pan alive, and so effortlessly. Thanks to Andy Narrel. He does deserve credit. Let’s give it to him.
EXACTLY! And not because they couldn find any - this school has more non-white students than white!!!! Yet they have an ALL WHITE STEELBAND?!?!?! I liek Andy too, but dis shit not right!
For those students who wish to pursue music...
It's North Texas, for crying out loud! Anyway, "white" is as much a "color" as "black" (neither one is actually a color).
Perhaps there were no students of color in the school's music program...and if there were they must have opted not to try the steel pan. Let's congratulate the vision and interest of these students who embraced an art form of a foreign culture.
joyful...thanks Andy.
Cela donne envie de retourner au College ! Très bel ensemble et visiblement du plaisir partagé !
The man is playing like he was born in Trinidad and Tobago. I'm a a trini, ah know
Amazing what my parents' culture can teach me and all other Americans!!! This is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
In a way,he is you know!
Non. That is not how we play in Trinidad. he's doing his own thing. give him some credit.
And all started by a toy steel pan his dad brought him as a souvenir from Trinidad.....!!!!
Pretty certain half of these views are from me constantly playing this piece.
Fabulous !!
I love Steel Pan... Greats.
way to go andy
Great Performance!
I. Love Andy. His. Music. Is. Great. I. Can. Listen. To. Him. All. All. Day
Wonderful performance.
Love what the triple guitars and steel bass are doing. There’s nothing like that underneath sound in all of music. But it has to be LIVE!
those negatives commentaries are getting really boring ! Pan, and music in general, has no flag ! Stop being limitated by your national pride ! hourrah for good music and good musicians !
Anita Bonan its not pride. its their music. it was born from them. so they can say anything they want it. love is like that.
@Jason Lind Music is Universal to be shared by anyone and all , I love Any's cool interpretation of Pan. Pan is very versatile .... Kudos to these players and Andy for their enthusiasm and interest in our National instrument . I feel flattered .
Culture vultures! Say what you want. This features the epitome of racism. And they still cant reveal the soul of our Trinidadian born spirit. He had the opposite to find a few black players But no so to hell with Andy Narell. We see what he represents!
Music is a world within itself and a language that we all understand. Quote from Stevie Wonder song.
awesome
This is sooo cool l love the Integration the arrangement almost felt like I was in Trinidad keep it up guys
wonderfull
LOVE IT!!!
Horn section was underutilized here. Steel Drum Guys were clearly the dominant force and there should have been better balance. Still it moved me as the first time I heard this Tune.
Smooth Jam, Nice, Enjoyable. Thanks.
good music stell pam
OMG well done
well, i have seen everything now!
...why would anyone go out of their way to dislike this video??
The world needs fools to properly function!
Best experience with Andy started when both Andy,Junior Regrello Capt. of Skiffle Bunch took me to the Late Pat Bishop's house to rectify and part of the song. Upon entering her beautiful i accidentally bumped into a pristine blue vase, after hit the floor Andy looked at me and said " that was prolly and new tenor pan in expenses.I shrugged and we laughed it off and was back to the music.
Brilliant. Been a big fan of Andy since discovering authentic steel bands while living in the Caribbean. You can always rely on the Americans to take somebody else's culture and do it better.
Where in the Caribbean did you live? Ever heard of Trinidad and Tobago? Andy Narell has been there many times and continues to go there to learn his instrument from the masters. He is good but there are better.
Mang O Chow
I lived in Antigua. There were some superb bands in the 70's. I've been to Tobago. I dont doubt there are even better, who for example, and playing jazz?
Paul Marshall Sorry, but i have to disagree. He can't compete with the masters of steel pan in Trinidad. I am not saying that he isn't good, because he's great. I've met him in Trinidad and as Mang said, He goes to the island to continuously learn more from the pan greats..
Paul, Andy Narrell is good, but go look up music by Liam Teague. His versatility in Jazz, Calypso, and Classical pan is light years ahead of Andy Narrell. And there are hundreds of Trinis with comparable or better skills. Your exposure is obviously limited.
Len Archer
All of this is just foolish talk.I am a born Trini with an insatiable love for sweet pan music. And that goes back to my real first love...Pan Am North Stars. Then there is Despers 'Party',Catelli,Renegades..Boogsie,Bradley,'Junior' Pouchet and all the other greats...pioneers.I respect them all.But when it comes to the musicality of it all...I would listen to Andy Narrell for hours. His seasoning adds a different flavour, brings a beautiful sound, and that is because he makes the pan play music given its limitations...So then, why can't we just appreciate and stop the foolish comparisons.Andy will take pan to heights that maybe most can't!
Awesome
Thanks for the order Coffee Street.
I second that Bytom Girl. Jeff is good too...he was actually my instructor when he taught the steel pans at Berkeley. Andy's a Golden Bear alum.
ANDY NARELL a pan great.
the whole concert!!! I want to hear my horn arrangements! :)
The sound man does not suck. Recording a steelband is NOT EASY. Check with Avatar Studio in NYC. Ask Amrit.
I apologize! I said the sound man sucked, but he fixed it! thru me for a loop! Nice interlude! nicely done NTCM!
❤
PETER Sammy I'm From Trinidad, Great Music Andy I Met Your Brother Jeff IN San Francisco Some Years Ago, He Did Give Me One Of His :C D He Is Also A Gifted Musician.jeff
This is now a staple of the Skiffle Bunch steel band.
I love this tune, and the happy faces of the musicians. I wish it was not just 'center channel' for audio.... (and there's some feedback hum :( )
I was looking this sound for death, I needed to listen this piece a very nice full of color.🎼🎹🎼🎹🎵🎶🎺🎤🎺🎧🎷🎸🎹🎸🎷🥁🥁
Hi Mr.Davis
Not bad for a bunch of Texans
Lionel Cameron 😂😂
@@johnharvey5381 Why is it only white students tho? UNT has more than 50% non-white students, yet the PANSIDE, the band playing an instrument created by poor BLACK people in the Caribbean, is ALL WHITE???!! ... I like Andy, I like his music and appreciate what he does with and for pan, but some soul searching here is in order...
@christophercastagne2906 actually i can vouch why i believe....in laredo, we used to have a steel pan group of high school students......alot of the kids that joined listened to hard rock and metal music....pan music is percussion and universally deals with heavy sounds like hard rock and metal bands.......so it makes sense since predominantly the people joining will actively listen to that kind of music....i got introduced to megadeath, deftones, and distubed from being a part of a steel band.
Also they predominantly wanted to learn how to have rhythm and how to drum 😂, i can keep a steady beat but not the loudest
I'm not a UNT student but I wrote the big band arrangements and would love to see all the footage
Do they play weddings? :-)
La version de Philippe Lavil ( Calypso) est formidable aussi !
çà fait l affaire !
Steel and Brass....Heavy Metal....
I hear you loud and clear. Even so there is room for every kind pan player and every kind of audience for each kind of player. NOTHING on this earth sounds like full size Panorama steel orchestra in full flight. NOTHING! How many people leave their homes thousands of miles away to come and hear Andy and his band? People leave USA, Europe, Japan and many other countries each and every year to come and hear up close and personal what you so scornfully describe as "pan beating". Learn to appreciate your own.
soon, ANDY NARELL' s NEW ALBUM :
"Oui, ma chérie " on andynarell.net
This is so cute lol
Are there any more clips from this concert?
Are there?
First learned of Andy Narrell in the late 80s. Title "The Hammer" from the album of the same name is an awesome song. In response to Paul Marshall, to say that "the Americans take somebody else's culture and do it better" is blasphemy and sacrilegious. Pan music was born in TT and nobody does it better. Frankly, I find this song too subdued and tamed. It needs a more "primitive" local sound.
Talk about primitive....your thoughts are a perfect example!
Those kids in green are ready to start chipping in TT. 'Coffee Street' yes there is literally a Coffee Street TT.
Andy don'st have Matilda ?
Shame that this has been poorly recorded. Cannot hear any of the steel orchestra (Apart from Andy). Otherwise, love the tune
6:53 Lol when the speakers malfunction
Andy is Trini to de Steel....
Nuff props to Andy! But what about Boogsie, Ken "the Professor", and all the other Trini greats? Come on Trinidad learn to promote and appreciate your own just as much as the foreigners do theirs.
What's wrong with giving props to an excellent musician?Andy grew up in Trinidad while his father was based (no pun intended) in Chaguaramas.Fell in love with the pan (his instrument of choice),and has been playing it ever since...taking it to different parts of the world. What's wrong with giving him the credit as a great ambassador of pan.Trinidad should give him the highest award! We live in fear that someone will always take away our candy from us.That is so insecure!Lets enjoy the music.lets enjoy our honorary ambassador.
thelibran11 Just because we don't fear something does not mean that it isn't actually happening. I see this and all i can think is that there are HUNDREDS, maybe even THOUSANDS of black people who would kill for such a gig.
The true music lover likes good music. It matters not where the performer is from. What Andy has isva good management team. The days of the lone wolf are gone. Admiring one performer does not descredit others.
Cry more
you so much bout them tell them come.panorama in tnt or newyork stop playing there fine but not Brooklyn museum ready yall lost ya damn mind
Hi Paul, Andy is good, but this is one culture the Americans have not bettered.Maybe you have not heard the real thing...................
You are sure right.Andy is a culture thief
Cry harder. This sounds amazing🤌🤌
