As a Caribbean man, I am pleased to see other cultures embrace this indigenous musical instrument. And there can be no better way to demonstrate pan than Kitchener's classic, "Pan in A Minor". Good job.
Thank you for not accusing us/them of cultural appropriation. I used to be in a band here in California that played arrangements of Mexican tunes for a Dia de los Muertos celebration....until the event organizers shut us down because we weren't Hispanic enough.
We are still looking at the Kaiso, Calypso greats years later... my family grew up with them in the 1940s and 50s in Laventille and Port of Spain. Hopefully during Labor Day parade in NY, we can hear the oldies on the trucks and the steel pans..
I often come back to watch this and other videos from my time with the UNT Steel Bands. Such a treat to have been part of this group and play this classic! It still makes me so happy ☺
Your post makes me happy too! So many students like you have been part of this special Steel Band over the years! It is a fantastic opportunity for me as well! Thank you!
This brought me to tears! I played tenor lead pan in high school in our steel drum band and this was my favorite song we played. I miss it so much and leaving high school I was devastated to stop playing. I still wish there was a way I could. It's been 13 years and I still miss it dearly
I was born in Trinidad and this piece of music is a master piece. It should be studied using Lord Kitchner’s rendition and then the steel ban rendition. Best composition overall for pan music.
This is just perfect. I play steel drum myself in Switzerland and this is just incrediblebly good. We played Pan in A Minor as well, but never at this level :-)
As I would expect from this group, outstanding rendition of a classic! Use of dynamics was appreciated by this listener and so glad it was from memory and not stuck on the stand!
Nice! I miss the moves, though. I played this piece on 4-pan with UNT when it first came out (way back in the day!) and each section had dance moves added in. It was amazing.
This has to be greatest arrangement of any steelband musical piece. To think that it did not get first place, says a lot about the judging that happened that year.
Lol the guy to the left of the blond girl use to teach at my high school for a little bit when we were in search of a drumline director. He gave me the nickname (completely random) that stuck with me to this day with the drumline alums from Guyer; Tommy. xD Always a pleasure to hear the Steel Drum Band. Been a fan since 2005 when I first heard them at the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival. Really looking forward to watching all the great pieces UNT has to offer at the festival this year!
Quite well done! This is an excellent rendition of Jit's arrangement (I speak as a Trini). Every so often I search RUclips to see what is being done with pan outside of T&T, and more and more I'm pleasantly surprised. I especially like it when arrangers make it their own and do new things with the music, like that Finnish arranger, and a band from Mauritius that plays it in "Mauritian sega" tempo. Brilliant! Next time -- maybe with "Year of Love" the latest big hit from Trinidad -- you could treat us to some Texan musical idioms brought to the calypso music, a la Aaron Copland. It's an ambitious ask, I know, but it's only an idea... -Big Sid
Brilliant! What a coruscating, crystalline clarity of sound (hat tip to Leonard Sachs.) Whenever I hear this song, a thought occurs to me. Lord Kitchener (Your Steel Band Needs YOU) sings English words to this melody, but it does seem to be crying out for words in a Latin language. Spanish would seem the obvious choice, but Portuguese or Italian would also do quite well.
Just happy, happy memories. To all who commented below. We must feel the same. Not one, not a single, negative review. Just goes to show you that this type of music loved by those of us, brings the same happy spirit about. Thanx to Andy Narell for keeping it alive in the minds of young musicians.
Mark I was a Ford before I got married....and it’s interesting to see that your name is spelt without an “e” at the end. Can I ask who your parents are, and are you Trinidadian?
I must say great execution of this song..jus i must note it's not the arrangers own....it's the rendition of one of Trinidad greatest pan arrangers..jit samaroo....agn this band played it well....jus not their own rendition....
What a bad ass performance for pan in a Minor! I keep coming back years later! Great job everyone
I'm from Trinidad and Tobago and it brings me such joy to see how far our music has gone. Very well done with this piece.
🇹🇹
this is so nice to see as a Trinidadian 😊 thank you
Wonderful! Thank you!

One of the greatest pieces written for pan
Jit was the greatest pan arranger, Jit and Kitch,an unbeatable combination.
Thrilling to listen.... If you close your eyes you would think you are in a pan yard. Not IN TEXAS HEARING SWEET SWEET PAN!
Great- sounding pans - well - tuned & a nice arrangement

Love it. I played 4 pan on this chart when John Kellis directed in the 90’s. Wonderful memories
This is just perfect. I play steel drum myself in Switzerland and this is just incrediblebly good. We played Pan in A Minor as well, but never at this level :-)

What an amazing arrangement! Well done. ENCORE!!!!
it's jit samaroo's arrangement not this band's own.....
Maybe this individual does not know it’s Dr JIT’S ARRANGEMENT
very impressive, great job

Mark I was a Ford before I got married....and it’s interesting to see that your name is spelt without an “e” at the end. Can I ask who your parents are, and are you Trinidadian?
Barbara, no my name is Ford, not Forde. And I'm not Trinidadian. I just love the music!
you can find it at panyard.com
I must say great execution of this song..jus i must note it's not the arrangers own....it's the rendition of one of Trinidad greatest pan arrangers..jit samaroo....agn this band played it well....jus not their own rendition....
I guess someone asked you...right?!
It was their own rendition fool...it was Jit's arrangement! There is a difference!
@@thelibran11 what difference only thing that is different is the tempo
Not a bad arrangement. I would have like the runs to be cleaner and more distinct. Muddled in some areas. But...good job all around.🎉
Omg I've been looking for a better version 8f this song specifically from UNT they do the best rendition in my opinion
