Windows was wrong, IMO, for trying to make a large potion of the installed base of computers unable to run an OS that should by all rights be able to do so.

Wait until you learn about Linux distros requiring x86-64-v3, which not all CPU's which support PopCNT support. So, is Linux going to really be the better choice? If distros start requiring v3, then Linux becomes stricter than even Windows as at least PopCNT includes all Core i series CPU's (and AMD's down to the FX), whereas V3 does not.

I would just suggest a windows mini pc instead of replacing the older hardware as they will run the same. The very old hardware and the low end of 2024 well the low end of 2024 sometimes is better than the high end of 16 years ago as SSE4.2 was put into CPUs in 2008.
If it is a computer just for avg user stuff windows 10 will keep on being good until around march of 2026 when a security patch for windows 11 will come but not for windows 10. 2 years to decide to either get a mini PC with as many ports as a full size desktop has for most prebuilts or go with linux with their current one which will require entirely new programs to use. So rebuying license keys for linux or finding free software for linux that does the same which will come with it's own learning a new software thing too.
Then you have to go to which costs more? A mini PC with windows 11 already installed or rebuying software and/or the time needed to learn the software for linux on a slower machine?

Intel has had SSE4.2 since 2009, so we're talking about 15 years. It certainly used to be fun to run Windows 2000 on a 386 CPU. All those who are threatening to switch to Linux will not do so for the most part. Guys, after 15 years buy a mini PC with an N100 processor for a little more than 100 dollars. Your electricity bill will soon pay for the system.

  • @robert0joe
    @robert0joe 4 месяца назад +25

I think this requirement is less bad than the initial system requirements for Windows 11. Windows 11 required 8th gen and above for Intel, and Zen 2 and above for AMD to run Windows 11 without modifications or hacks. This means when Windows 11 was released (back in October 2021) 5+ year old Intel PCs and 2.5+ year old AMD PCs were considered to not meet the minimum requirements. This cutoff personally for me was absurd.
This SSE4 requirement affects (as of now) 16+ year old Intel PCs and 17+ year old AMD PCs. For these PCs, if you really need Windows, I suggest Windows 10 (the last officially supported version), as you'll get feature updates up to Oct 2025, and security updates up to Oct 2028. By that time your PC is already around 20+ years old. Windows 11 23H2 will also get updates by up to 2025, but for security updates better move back to Windows 10.
If by 2028 your 22+-year-old PCs is still alive I highly suggest running Linux. You'll get better performance due to Linux being leaner and not bloated like Windows. If you really need Windows, get something used that's newer than your 22+ year old PC (by 2028) for $100+ on eBay. Then you can run Windows 11 (via modifications) again.

So far Microsoft is going further into the dirty nasty world:
    - Ads in the OS
    - Requiring M$ Account for you to use your computer
    - Force Bitlocker on you so your data can't be recovered in the event of a disk corruption. (Sorry all your photos are lost forever because you didn't pay for the premium OneDrive backup)
    - Requiring TPM 2.0
    - Requiring certain CPU instructions for it to work. In other worlds it's fine to run two builds where one has the updated code and the other not.
    - Trying more and more to look like Mac OS. (F*k those borderless windows and "snap" functions)
Last decent Windows was Windows 7, after that they have gone into the path of really messing up things for users.

I think that is a much more relevant concern than the incompatibility of processors older than approx 14 years (before Intel Nehalem and AMD Phenom II era). How much AI processing is windows going to perform to such an extent the inefficiency of subsitute code to perform the operation would be a hinderance to the user? Although I'm not sure why they would want to as there is a ton of crap in 24H2 that makes it way worse than 23H2. I have systems from 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2019 and they all support SSE 4.2 and SSE4A and only the 2019 system actually supports Windows 11 without needing the bypass. Lol if your cpu is over 10 years old doubt it will run windows 11 anyway .
What a joke i wrote many posts bashing linux and windows equally but at the end of the day the choice is yours . Personally ill stick with windows due to the issues I have with linux even with new hardware.
Telling everyone to go to linux makes perfect sense if they don't mind rebuilding and coding the os and they have apps that they know are supported for the average user its not really feasible every os has its issues including linux .

@@theit-unicorn1873I don't know personally for me I tried to game and it was painful on Linux unfortunately even for simple games my hardware was either too new or old ... I had to jump through so many hoops . I ended up running a windows vm under Linux but doesn't that defeat the purpose ?
I'm saying at the end of the day it's simpler for me to run windows for my needs .

@dreaper5813 yes and AMD user I had issues with both sometimes my games would break because they were not coded for Linux I would have to go and rebuild my Kernal or use specific ones so it's more complicated and not worth it to me. I play all games and not just simple ones I don't want to limit my pc to specific ones although the new ones are trash. You can't always use just free drivers and it's a pain to try to get non free working correctly. It's not user friendly and as cut and dry as just using windows for gaming and Linux on a separate partition for other uses.

Microsoft doesn't care about users at all. Microsoft has its own plans. I'm afraid this is not a business agenda.
