When simple isn't so simple…built-in cabinet makeover.

  • Small cabinet makeover! It's time to demo an old cabinet and rebuild it with form AND function! In this video, I completely make over a small built-in cabinet with all new storage options. The previous built-in cabinet was functionally deficient with shallow shelves and small drawers behind doors. With the addition of 2 large drawers, all new Shaker-style drawer fronts and paint to match the existing mudroom built-in, I was able to transform a small mudroom cabinet into a much more useful cabinet and storage solution.

    Great video buddy! Great quick improvement! Jason actually had a good tip for rails and stiles. He said to mark the “front” of each with an R or an S. And keep that side going the same direction on the fence when you cut the panel groove. That way if your grove isn’t perfectly center at least they all line up as long as the letters face the same directions.

    Hi Keith. A bubbly personality is great but a bubbly paint finish - not so much. I had a similar issue when spraying some Target Coatings products (all waterborne). The oil based stain I used had a cure time of 12 hours. I doubled the time. I then used a 50/50 mixture of denatured alcohol and water to lightly dampen a cloth and cleaned the surfaces. I waited an hour for that to dry. I also thinned my materials being sprayed by 10%. Lastly I cleaned, I mean REALLY cleaned my spray gun. No more bubbles for me. I don't know what did it but I think it was primarily the oil based stain not being fully cured before applying coats over it.
    I have a 4 stage HVLP turbine and recently went to a 5 stage in order to spray heavier finishes. I still need to thin material but not as much as with a 4 stage turbine.
    I will wait for your "CSI - Bubbles" episode (if you make one) to see the solution to your bubble issues.

    • @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
      @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience. I don’t spray any solvent based finishes, so alcohol isn’t an option. What’s frustrating is I sprayed BM Advance and Aura for years with a 3-stage HVLP and had no issues. These newer finishes have such a different chemical makeup and have really thrown a wrench into the works.

      Thanks Philip! My planer actually has no snipe so i don’t need to worry, but you can always leave your parts with 2-3 inches extra material on the ends and cut off later or run scrap pieces directly in front and then behind of your finished pieces and those will absorb any of the snipe

    So sorry you had such problems with the finishing. I’ve had excellent luck using renner products, via a graco x5, tritech 380 fine finish gun, and gold fine finish tips.

      Hey Matt! Thanks for sharing your spray finishing info. Renner is definitely a product I am going to explore more and I've also heard good things about the Graco 5 gun. I really appreciate the comment and the insight. Thanks!

      @@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking For production work a Tritech T5 would be the play but for the sort of work you do and I do, the cheaper X5 works great. The magic is with the gun and tips though. I took a cabinet painting class from master finisher Dennis Rodriguez who's also become a good friend. He's the one that's developed allot of the techniques for using airless to spray these higher end wood coatings. Best to you and your business Keith. I love what you do.

      @@handymadness Thanks man! And thanks again for the great info! I'm going to look into the X5 a little deeper. A friend of mine uses that setup with ChemCraft and has great success with it.

    You can eliminate “pre” from your vocabulary by just saying the verb you are adding to. When you say “predrill” or “prethread” what you are describing is drilling or threading.
    Thanks for the excellent content.

    Every time I see this thumbnail in my feed, all I can think of is that the location of this cabinet would never pass a home inspection. So dangerous.

    • @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
      @KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking  Год назад

      Well, it did. It was a complete home renovation and passed all inspections before I refaced the cabinet.
