  • We love our DeWalt® DW735 13” Planer - and we’ll enjoy it even more when the Byrd Shelix® 40 cutter helical is installed. Here are our initial impressions of the product - see what we thought!
    #woodplaner #helical #woodworking #woodplaner
DeWalt® has created a great niche with the DW735 planer. It has 4 support posts for better stability and accuracy, a chip ejections system, a 13” (33 cm) width capacity, and can cut stock up to 6” (15 cm) thick. This great planer is a step up from many smaller planers and a bridge to larger capacity or commercial units.
As great as it is, a few upgrades bring it to a new level. We’ve installed the Wixey electronic depth gauge, and I’ve come to depend on the gauge in a very short time. It’s very accurate, easy to read, and becomes intuitive in short order. You can check our episode on how to install this great tool and calibrate it here:
    • Upgrade Your Planer wi...
The second upgrade is a significant investment that will pay dividends for many years to come - the Byrd Shelix® 40-blade helical planer head. We say “investment” because this tool isn’t cheap - coming in at about $500. I’ve heard it said that it costs to save in the long run, and this is a good example of this.
Because this helical planer head uses 4 spiral rows of 10 cutters each, replacing a single-nicked knife is very easy using the supplied replacement tool. The angle the blades encounter the surface of the wood gives a superior finish, and a quieter cut than straight blades.
When we opened the box, it came very nicely and well packed and included a robust installation manual, a product sheet, a protective plastic sheet to use during installation to protect the cutter and your hands, 5 carbide replacement heads, a replacement tool, and the Shelix® head with bearings pre-installed.
One look at the head will confirm that this is a quality tool. Ours was flawless, rust-free (due to the included desiccant), and with PLENTY of mass. The tool felt heavy for its size - and that’s a good thing.
It is made entirely in the U.S.A. by a family business located in Kentucky. Byrd makes helical cutting heads for a variety of planers and jointers.
Our initial impressions are VERY favorable.
You can watch us remove the original factory straight-blade cutter head and replace it with the Byrd Shelix®. We will use the installation manual and show you the steps so you can get an idea of what it takes or how to do it if you have purchased the unit. You can watch our episode here:

We also ran a side-by-side sound test, using a dB meter, to gauge the sound level difference between the standard and Shelix® head. See how it turned out by watching our test here:
    COMING SOON!
We think you’re going to like owning and using the Shelix®, no matter what machine you have. And, since we are located in the U.S., we really like supporting an American manufacturer, and a small business at that.
    JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

I'm very impressed with what comes with the cutter. Most places would not do this.

I bought that same one I got the OEM fit about 3 hours total assembly and I also got a tourqe driver to tourqe the cuttters back on without cracking them from over tightening. did a test cut and had to adjust two cutters after. The quality of the cut is so much better now.
