I love how very British this game is - so many great voice actors from all over, and lots of dialect, like Aradin's famous line at the gates of the Grove: "We was running for our lives" 😂 (Alas, the biggest arsehole in the game is from S Yorks)
I dunno if anyone's told you this but you can turn off Cloud of Daggers after a fight to avoid anyone getting hurt by it afterwards. There's a tiny icon to the bottom left of your player portrait on the bottom bar that can toggle it off! I definitely got into problems by leaving it on in the past. 😂
I love auntie Ethel with all my heart. The writing, voice acting, character design, the map and challenges of her lair... The people at Larian Studios are beyond amazing for creating such masterpieces within their masterpiece.
Aunty Ethel is such a great villain. Awesome episode, as always. And yes, Magic Missile is probably one of the best damaging spells. It doesnt do much damage but the fact that it always hits and that it does multiple instances of damage makes it so good. You can target multiple 1hp targets with it to clean up or you can barrage a single target if you're trying to break their concentration since each hit requires a new concentration save. Don't leave the house without at least a few scrolls of Magic Missile.
Amazing job with the Hag; it took me multple tries my first playthough! And on finding Gandral, most people miss him completely, which is a real shame since he gives you a lot of context for Astarion's backstory. Ethel is a green hag by the way - you can tell becaue she's all plant-y with bits of mushrooms and greenery growing out of her. I guess the author of that book was too scared of Green Hags to write an accurate description lmao.
Part of me felt like a green hag wrote that entry. Clear bias against the other types of hags, listing petty grievances like their 'inability to brew a proper cup of tea' while only saying that green hags are beautiful.
I love that I have about a thousand hours in this game and there are still new things I see in every playthrough. In this case - I've never seen the fate of the petrified dude if you un-petrify him before killing the hag. Thank you for that :)
You might be one of my favorite players to watch work through this game for the first time! I appreciate how much you engage with the world (reading the books and descriptions for everything) and interact thoughtfully with the characters. I'm so excited for your party to reach level 5 - it is SUCH a satisfying power jump from level 4.
I have nothing to say this video aside from fuck yes I love your content so much!! You've become my comfort creator I love watching at the end of the day
I also threw water at the burning cage. It didn't extinguish the cage, but it splashed Mayrina, so when the hag created illusions of Mayrina, it was easy to tell which one was real - only one of them was covered in water 🙃
The game doesn't do a good job of explaining this, but weapon attacks (both damage and chance to hit) scale off of physical ability stats (usually melee weapons off of strength and ranged/light weapons off of dexterity) and spells scale off of mental stats depending on class (so your bard uses charisma, Gale uses intelligence, etc). It's really important especially as you get further in to try to max out your attacking stat, which you can increase by 2 points every 4 levels. You also only get a better bonus every even number. So a 16 in a stat gives you a +3 and a 17 also only gives a +3. But an 18 gives you a +4. So the best way to optimize your stats is to try to get them to even numbers. That's part of why hit your percentages seem so low (and the fact that you're playing on tactician). That said, you crushed the hag fight which can be really tricky on a first play through. Also yes, summon the quasit! It can be very useful in Act 1 and it's also hilarious.
I’m trying to respect your play through and not offer spoilers on things to come or could have done differently. I enjoy watching you play and try to honor what Joey would do.
Something to note and something to exploit in future situations: the red border on the minimal means you can’t fast travel/long rest “here” but in most cases, you can’t fast travel retrace your steps to a spot where the red border goes away again and you CAN fast travel or long rest. Most of the time, the event making the border red is not timed and will not be affected by long resting.
My favourite way of using magic missile is precisely in Auntie's lair, after all the illusions appear: Position the wizard in range of as many of them as possible, then send one missile at each Auntie, and watch them all poof away. But it;s one of the all time best 1st level spells in D&D. Damage is not super high, and the Shield spell is a hard counter to Magic Missile, but the guaranteed hits are really nice! And because each individual missile counts as one hit, some items that give you lightning charges per hit can become really effective, making the spell even better than it seems even now. (Also, there is a trader somewhere who sells an amulet that gives a boost specifically to Magic Missile. So the game even leans into it!)
Love the back story to Joey… what if: His mother’s lost twin brother found him on the beggar streets playing an off tuned lute. He instantly knew you were his nephew because of the strange birthmark on your face, the same your mother had. Your uncle was the most famous bart in all of Baldur’s Gate, but infamous because he had a forbidden affair with the wife of the great lord (enter a name here)… he took you under his wing and taught you everything he knows… he bestowed on you the gift of finding words for any melody. One day your uncle fell violently ill, for no reason, (enter symptoms here). On his death bed he pointed to a loose floor tile in the corner of his room. At closer inspection you discovered a hidden chest beneath the floor, inside you found a black violin with shining white strings. When you reached out to pick up the instrument, a small blue sparks shot out of the violin, and scorched your face. You jumped back and rushed to the water bucked in the corner of the room, splashing your face, wincing, touching your birth mark. You stand up and looked at the mirror above your uncles drawing table. Your birth marks have small blackened scorch marks at the sides, it now looks like birds… you turned back to the violin and saw specks of blood forming a word at the back of it, “Johnathan”.. Your uncle stares at you with weak urgent eyes, saying: “my fathers, your grandfathers, keep it safe” A flash of light and a sharp pain, followed by wet grey tentacles gripping your arms, “what is this! NO!” You screamed. The last thing you saw, was your uncles dead blue eyes staring back at you, empty, lost, like nothing mattered anymore, he failed, you failed…
Also don't worry Joey, every BG3 player has a moment where they go "why wouldn't I magic missile" and the only reasons not to are: 1. "Low damage" 2. It takes a spell slot (matter at higher levels when cantrips get their damage boosted) 3. It gets boring to always win with magic missile lol
You uploaded again?! Naughty. That’s a decade each! You owe 30 more episodes petal! 😂 jokes aside well played beating Ethel! She’s no joke and you handled her well, Magic missile is basically the sledgehammer in Gales arsenal 🥵 just remember not every problem is a nail 😉 if you catch my drift
Downsides of Magic Missile: you've already discovered that anything using Shield is immune to it, that's one. The other is, as a trade off for never missing, it does less damage than a lot of other spells. Generally its a good move if your more powerful spells are likely to miss, imo. Oh, and Familiar's don't have time limits. If you have one summoned they just walk around with you until they die (then you can re-summon them).
Ah, you've discovered the joys of Magic Missile! I always give that and Shield to my sorcerers and wizards, as they're two of the best spells in the game imo. Not many enemies have either spell, which is fortunate.
Auntie Ethel is such a bastard lol. A lot happened this episode, exciting stuff! Astarion's backstory is unfolding... Also, a fun little thing you can do: try talking to Gale at camp while only in your underwear. He might have something interesting to say :)
5:39 I was a big dumb dumb and drank it the first time. I continued to do so every second long rest. Once you drink from it the second time you'll realize why, but don't worry too much about trying it - you won't die. Also - next time - try to 'save' Auntie's victims after dealing with her. There's still magic at play in the place, and some can be saved. Also - next time you try to save the ones in masks (since I'm assuming you will want to) - don't make the same mistake I did. Don't take off their mask right away. The downside to magic missles is that they have lower damage... unless you take an evocation subclass, because then at some level they are just gold... Since you are on lower difficulties, I'm pretty sure you can throw hag's potions. SOme of the potions are good, most are terrible.
4:40 Psh! Astarion can't be a vampire. He's walking around in broad daylight!! 11:45 Color spray blinds targets up to 33 current hp. You would need to reduce a target's hp to 33 or lower to blind them. Blinding a target is very powerful- all attacks are made with advantage against a blinded target. 33 is very low so color spray isn't very useful, especially in the mid-endgame. 49:20 Congratulations! You beat one of the hardest battles in the game! If you cast Speak to Dead on the hag without looting the Fey Amulet, you get unique dialogue. And if she gets a turn while in low health, she will try to parley. 56:05 Be careful with the hag potions! Some have *permanent* negative effects on you with *no* way to remove them! 57:00 There is no cure for paralysis here. Check Shadowheart's 2nd level spell list. 59:00 Backdoor is blocked by a very glowy barrier before facing the hag. 1:08:40 There is an official original animation collabed by Larion with Mashed about that frog! You're lucky you encountered it after ousting the hag. That frog might actually be the strongest creature in act 1.
"We need to teach Astarion not to just kill anyone wily nily" 2 seconds later "Do you want to pickpocket him, Astarion?" 🤣 "What if it turns him into a zombie or something?" Welp.
Magic Missile is arguably the best attacking spell in the game, and it'll only get better over time. Since it's multiple small hits instead of one big one, it means anything that adds damage is absolutely busted on it. Like lightning charges, as an example. The only downside is that it's completely blocked by Shield, and some enemies will have damage reduction, where they take 2 or 3 less damage from every hit. Which can make Magic Missile barely do anything, since it's all small hits. Find Familiar (for Scratch or Cheeky Quasit) are ritual spells. So the best time to cast them is out of combat, when it doesn't cost a spell slot. Also, if you're worried about Scratch dying in combat (like I was), don't be. If he hits 0 HP, he just gets un-summoned.
Hi Joe! Lesser restoration will cure the bloodless condition on your main. This way you can let Astarion bite you at each long rest for the happy condition without detriment to your main character. Use Withers to buy a cleric hireling. Make sure the hireling learns lesser res.
If you want to cure that Tiefling girl in Groove, there is spell or item specific for such conditions, so don’t worry it’s absolutely possible to cure her👍 Also I have played 400 hours but it never crossed my mind to do anything to that petrified dwarf before I confront Ethel. So it’s my first time seeing this dialogue!
👋 Thanks for another vid Joe. Interestingly enough, I didn't see the petrification death on my first playthrough. I saved him without plannjng too. So was pretty surprised on my second playthrough to see his death. This game is a whole lot of different experiences via a whole lot of choices.
Keep 'em coming, Joe! When you cast persistent spells like Cloud of Daggers, you can cancel it at the bottom left of your character portrait. To stop you from walking in it yourself.
Hi Joe. Thanks for another great episode. I love your content and enjoy that you’re taking your time and digging into the narrative. You are great at picking up on details. Keep up the good work cute guy.
Magic Missile is low-key one of the more underrated spells I feel like, Especially in this game given how bonus damage works. On Tactician difficulty and below with an evocation wizard you can buff it to the point that each magic missile does something like 55 damage at level 10 (49 before that)
You don’t use your flourishes that you get as a swords bard, but you like to give inspiration to your allies in combat: you might want to consider respec-ing as a valor bard. They get “combat inspiration “ which can be applied to more combat rolls and then your be more effective at what you’re already doing. ^_^
The situation you wouldn't magic missile is when you want to cast control, AoE or concentration spells... to THEN magic missile and focus fire. Also, because of how D&D works focus fire is generally the best strategy, since it will give the enemies less turns and you more to focus on even more targets to remove from play. Your hag fight was amazing for a new player!! Congrats
the thing about the well? if you dont bresak the illusion the whole place looks beautiful like from a fairy tail. crystal clear water invites you to drink it... until you get a debuff xD
Awesome! Will watch when I get home from work! Really enjoying this playthrough. Also think your silent Hill 2 playthrough needs some love, that's brilliant!
I've played this game to completion with multiple characters, and yet I had never heard the explanation of astarions turning. This game is always capable of surprising you. So many things you can miss.
The way Joe keeps giving us content i can only pray to the gods so Joe stays healthy and rested so he keeps uploading at this pace Edit: Joey is way better than my Tav. Aeranella murdered Gandrel as soon as he said he was chasing Astarion, no one's getting anywhere near my pookie 😂😂 Edit: Non lethal only works with melee attacks 😭😭 a friend found that the hard way after they killed Scratch on an honor mode playthrough
Tipp for sneaking, if there are multiple moving enemies: You can go into turn based mode (after going into sneak to not waste an action during your turn) and use dash. Tip for Astarion: Put his rapier in his main hand (it does more damage) and the dagger in your off-hand.
Magic Missile is usually great. One way it can fail is in the case of an opponent who can cast Shield, which includes the effect of nullifying MM (and is a nice level 1 spell to give Gale). MM can be buffed via some items/effects that add damage, as they may be applied to _each_ missile; and each level you up-cast MM adds another missile. (I generally give Gale a weapon that adds lightning charges, which you can get in Act 1, but won't spoil what/where/how. 😉)
The Evil Eye might be written by Elizabeth M Soot, who is an author in the Forgotten Realms writing books about dealing with jags. She was once forced into servitude and a thrall by a Green Hag, so it could be why it was biased towards the Green Hag 😂 yknow, being forced to say they are beautiful.😊 Or it could be written by Auntie Ethel herself.
Can't wait to watch lol. Also left some comments on the last vid you might want to a look at specifically Joey. Thanks for the parasocial interaction for the day lol.
Hi Joe! Another great episode. I love your reaction to the ungrateful (and grieving) Mayrina. 😂 There are so many more wonderful experiences to come. I can't wait!
The downside to magic missile is that it's automatically blocked by the shield spell and per dart it doesn't do as much damage as say a fireball. However it is still a very good spell and character builds can be created around just that one spell.
A great Wednesday night: comfy PJs, a yummy dinner, and a Joe Greene BG3 upload! BTW, fight with the hag was brilliant. It took me three tries, and I was on normal mode. Great job! Also, shield is a reaction spell that will nullify Magic Missiles.
Such a great gameolay, too bad you cant save all ethel's victim, but its fine, love your reaction Something to help: If you feel you and your companion atk low, its probably from their stats (thats why i said respect them) STR for melee weapon Dex for ranged and finnese weapon Int for wizard spells Wis for monk, ranger, druit spell (just their spells, not their meelee atk) Cha for bard warlock paladin sorcerer spell So thats why you cant be spellcaster bard and physical combat bard at the same time. The max stats for each is 17 and can be upgraded to 20 At lv 4 when chose feat most ppl chose ability improvement But again, its a nice video
Only half an hour into the video, but btw when you sneak you actually want to hit shift+sneak if I remember correctly to put your whole party into stealth at the same time (there's some hockey for it) otherwise any unstealth party members will be seen or even surprised as normal like with Aunties flock.
To add, the shift and control keys also work on items like how you do in managing files on your desktop. Control + click on an item in your inventory or stash to add it to selection. You can select 1 item, then shift + click a second item, and you will select all items between the two items, which will be very helpful in selling and moving multiple items or selected items. Drag and drop works too, also double clicking will use the first option on the list of actions you can take when you right click.
One of the best passive perks in the game comes from Ethel if you get her down to ~10hp without killing her. It was unlucky for you to hit so hard on that last hit.
Since you'll respec Shadowheart, I have a little tip: If you want to (most important ofcourse!) you can improve her abilities by quite a lot. Her 6 base stats are very poorly distributed. Wisdom is the best to be a high number for her and try to avoid odd numbers. You don't benefit from them much since bonusses are applied for every even number reached. But again, you should only do this if you want to! I would understand if you want to keep the characters as much as they originally are. As always: amazing video! I do love Auntie Ethel's storyline so much!
Great going against Ethel! Love her and hate her. Also, loved Astarion nearly dying trying to bite that masked lady despite already being hit twice by her. I feel like he's petty enough to die that way 😂
You were so happy with yourself for killing Ethel and I was like " NO! The hair!" You can buff the damage output of magic missile quite a lot ;-) It is called the magic missile machine gun and is quite fun.
dude: *dying from disease* joe: um... i can only apologise 😥 BWAHAHAH this made my day thx for the video! i just finished with all my exams and came home happy to watch your video 💗
In my playthrough i decided not to give Mayrina the wand and instead kept Connor as an undead servant to summon now and then, lol. You did the noble thing.
TIP/SPOILER........................................ Traps Use throw to throw items on top of the trap vents like clothing the will bloke the vented fumes.. Then you can walk up and disarm.
My first fight with the hag was not as great at Joe's. It was quite fun watching Joe figure out the boss and succeed. Mayrina can kick rocks though, she had two brothers who would have probably helped her with the baby. Wouldn't be surprised if she is the reason her husband is dead.
The hireling should learn lesser restoration and you can then have him cure your main before leaving the camp. You keep all your spell slots this way. Cheers
Super spoiler: I want to say "none of them get the tadpole out. You keep it for the whole game no matter what." Just to save some pain of worrying about trying to find a cure, but yeah, it's too big of a spoiler...
18:59 Both Joe and Joey go 😯 Hilariously brutal 😂 What's even more brutal is... (Spoiler for alternative route). If you had saved Efrim after defeating Ethel, he would have survived (probably because Ethel infected him with the disease in the first place.) 😈 He would have ran back to his family, unsure of how much time has passed, or if they are even still alive. Also, if you drink from the well next to the tea house while Ethel's swamp illusion is still unbroken, you get a buff from the water. Until you piss auntie off, then you get a debuff 😈

Peak BG3 / TTRPG move.
The voice acting by the woman who plays Ethel is superb, I think. All the voice acting in this game is top notch.
While the voice acting is strong across the board, I agree that Auntie Ethel deserves special attention. She NAILED the delivery and whimsy.
Also super fun you actually read the hag book again before confrontation.

That frog still gives me nightmares.
"We need to teach Astarion not to just kill anyone wily nily"
2 seconds later
"Do you want to pickpocket him, Astarion?" 🤣
"What if it turns him into a zombie or something?" Welp.
If you want to cure that Tiefling girl in Groove, there is spell or item specific for such conditions, so don’t worry it’s absolutely possible to cure her👍
Also I have played 400 hours but it never crossed my mind to do anything to that petrified dwarf before I confront Ethel.
Magic Missile is low-key one of the more underrated spells I feel like,
Especially in this game given how bonus damage works. On Tactician difficulty and below with an evocation wizard you can buff it to the point that each magic missile does something like 55 damage at level 10 (49 before that)
Damn I wouldn’t have expected it to be underrated I feel like everyone would be using it. The 100% hit rate is just too good to pass on imo
You don’t use your flourishes that you get as a swords bard, but you like to give inspiration to your allies in combat: you might want to consider respec-ing as a valor bard. They get “combat inspiration “ which can be applied to more combat rolls and then your be more effective at what you’re already doing. ^_^
Good on these videos man, already keen for the next one
The situation you wouldn't magic missile is when you want to cast control, AoE or concentration spells... to THEN magic missile and focus fire.
Also, because of how D&D works focus fire is generally the best strategy, since it will give the enemies less turns and you more to focus on even more targets to remove from play. Your hag fight was amazing for a new player!! Congrats
the thing about the well? if you dont bresak the illusion the whole place looks beautiful like from a fairy tail. crystal clear water invites you to drink it... until you get a debuff xD
you forgot to mention you also get a buff - before it's getting de-buffed and made worse.
"This dude's an idiot! He's clearly a vampire!"
2 hours earlier: "omg astarion's a vampire?!" **shocked pikachu face**
Awesome! Will watch when I get home from work! Really enjoying this playthrough. Also think your silent Hill 2 playthrough needs some love, that's brilliant!
Thanks for the tip. Maybe I have to watch those too. 😊
I've played this game to completion with multiple characters, and yet I had never heard the explanation of astarions turning. This game is always capable of surprising you. So many things you can miss.
Yeah Magic Missile is just such a good spell. Thank you for another great episode 😊
The way Joe keeps giving us content i can only pray to the gods so Joe stays healthy and rested so he keeps uploading at this pace
Edit: Joey is way better than my Tav. Aeranella murdered Gandrel as soon as he said he was chasing Astarion, no one's getting anywhere near my pookie 😂😂
Edit: Non lethal only works with melee attacks 😭😭 a friend found that the hard way after they killed Scratch on an honor mode playthrough
Yay an upload from Joe!! My day is already getting better. 🥰
I was going to say reload your save after the petrified dwarf bit....but you looted instead......HAHAHA. I'm dead.
Tipp for sneaking, if there are multiple moving enemies:
You can go into turn based mode (after going into sneak to not waste an action during your turn) and use dash.
I think I’ve just got that weapon 😉
Just in time for my lunch break!! Perfect timing, sir.
35:57 😅😅😅 mayyybeee 😂
Maryna is really annoying but hey, you did the right thing and the combat was really well done 😊
Okay, now I have something to do this evening. 😄 Yay!
The Evil Eye might be written by Elizabeth M Soot, who is an author in the Forgotten Realms writing books about dealing with jags. She was once forced into servitude and a thrall by a Green Hag, so it could be why it was biased towards the Green Hag 😂 yknow, being forced to say they are beautiful.😊
Or it could be written by Auntie Ethel herself.
I love reading Joey's backstory!
There's an option to tell Mayrina about her brothers in the first interaction so that she isn't so... hostile later lol
Such a great gameolay, too bad you cant save all ethel's victim, but its fine, love your reaction
Something to help:
If you feel you and your companion atk low, its probably from their stats (thats why i said respect them)
STR for melee weapon
Dex for ranged and finnese weapon
Int for wizard spells
Wis for monk, ranger, druit spell (just their spells, not their meelee atk)
Cha for bard warlock paladin sorcerer spell
So thats why you cant be spellcaster bard and physical combat bard at the same time.
The max stats for each is 17 and can be upgraded to 20 At lv 4 when chose feat most ppl chose ability improvement
But again, its a nice video
I"m glad you found the shadow druids, the first time I played somehow I didn't find this out.
Great going against Ethel! Love her and hate her. Also, loved Astarion nearly dying trying to bite that masked lady despite already being hit twice by her. I feel like he's petty enough to die that way 😂
Thanks for the zoom on the books/notes. Watching on my phone.
Shart can heal that girl in the grove who drank Ethel's potion with her II spell slot charm. Or you can find an amulet with that charm in the grove)
You were so happy with yourself for killing Ethel and I was like " NO! The hair!"
You can buff the damage output of magic missile quite a lot ;-) It is called the magic missile machine gun and is quite fun.
19:29 This cracked me up 😂
dude: *dying from disease*
joe: um... i can only apologise 😥
BWAHAHAH this made my day
thx for the video! i just finished with all my exams and came home happy to watch your video 💗
Yay, my favorite villain, i love to hate her. Hope you are enjoying the game petal...
In my playthrough i decided not to give Mayrina the wand and instead kept Connor as an undead servant to summon now and then, lol. You did the noble thing.
You can use hand crossbow in offhand as bonus attack. Non leathal only applies to melee attacks. And magic missiles are good but weak indeed.
TIP/SPOILER........................................ Traps
Use throw to throw items on top of the trap vents like clothing the will bloke the vented fumes.. Then you can walk up and disarm.
19:22
Congratulations you just Morty'd a guy (in an innocent good will effort to save someone, you have made the situation horrifically even worse)
Gale always gets Arcane Hunger for me there as well! Great job with the hag, I always find that one a little difficult so early!
Cheers
Semi spoiler: every potential cure offers potential debuffs and lore. How effective they are varies.
Super spoiler:
I want to say "none of them get the tadpole out. You keep it for the whole game no matter what." Just to save some pain of worrying about trying to find a cure, but yeah, it's too big of a spoiler...
Actually you can only use main hand attack to keep them unconcious, any other attacks will actually kill them.
Nooo, it's over already? Now I have to wait for more. 😭 Looking forward to the next one, as always! 😀❤
Woah! Way to go against Ethel! ^v^
You should revisit the hag when at higher level, and try helping these captured folks there after killing the hag.
Outcomes can be very different!
You can guarantee advantage for Astarion by putting another party member within melee range of an enemy 🖤
I'm not sure if that guarantees 'advantage' per se, but it does enable sneak attack bonuses.
49:09 it might have been better if Karlach missed in this moment.
Do you know you can control your teammate to disarm the traps or lock pick? Astarion is really good at these
HI JOE :) ILY, hope ur well
18:59 Both Joe and Joey go 😯 Hilariously brutal 😂
What's even more brutal is...
