I have the bare bones manual Gen 2 Forester, interesting to watch you learning the car. They are amazing little machines once you get the hang of them.
iPhoneSasuke - Wow ! Thanks for this incredible video of your Subie Forester. I'm an Outback owner . . . you really showed off the Forester capabilities in the Russian snow. Looks like Subaru has carved out a solid position in your local market there -- no doubt powered along by the AWD system.
+Eric Harman Thanks for your comment. When I edited this video, I thought that it would be wrong to show only those moments where I can do everything from 1st try. I showed that 4WD doesn't exempt from the need to have the skills. If you've watched the video where the car 100% successfully climbed, then you would be very surprised in life, why you cant' dit it like me. It would be wrond. So I showed all my wins and fails.
I've been in situations a lil more severe than that. Left the traction control on and it pulled me right through. Using the brakes to lock certain wheels and send the power to the other wheels. Also I found the AWD responds perfect when you very your throttle response from %15 - %25 but that is hard to measure unless you have an after market read out. I take my forester places where I have doubts it could make it and it surprises me every time. Just watch your throttle input and turning your VDC and TCU off is not always the best option.
This is where the newer models with X-mode really are in their element. The older models without X-mode require constant throttle input to overcome obstacles like this while the computer sorts out where to direct power. This can sometimes take a couple seconds while X-mode reacts much quicker. Not horrible driving in this video, but I'd recommend staying in the throttle a bit longer than it seen here to let the computer do its thing.
RTFM and keep the gas on low, but FTFS keep it! You have to give time (as you did on 2:42 and later). Previpous attempts were just funny (giving lot gas for short time, then go on breaks - you shouldn't do that). Thanks for sharing anyway. Nice to see some real live tests : ) Good job.
Thanks for adequate comment. I want to believe that you understand that hill on the start and on 2:42 are different? Important: I used the breaks only when due to work of VDC (when I gave too much gas) car rolled back.
iPhoneSasuke You cannot overcome the situation when no tire has good grip. Impossible. At least one wheel has to have some friction. But there are really lot of those people who try to give lot of gas for short time, and then give up after maybe half a second. That is definately not a good way to manage slippery hills like that from your movie. So the 1st attempts looked like wrong handling. If there were no grip to all wheels - then you wont succeed anyway, but I am not sure if you were patient enough there? Anyway - seems that after all you controlled the car very well. Everyone has to learn their lessons. Well done.
Foresters are always hit or miss in terms of looks. Usually I'm not a big fan of them looks wise, but this one I think looks sharp. As for the hill at the beginning of the video, why was only the front or back tires spinning one end at a time? It looked like it was switching from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive. I was thinking maybe it was the VDC applying the brakes to the wheels with no grip (at least tires visible from camera perspective) but didn't see any initial slippage. Not trolling, just curious as I'm in the market for a Subaru (crosstrek) currently.
Are you shure that only front or back tires was spinning at one time? Try to watch in HD. Only those wheels which accounted for the greatest pressure (due to lack of torque, I think) was unable to spin - typically diagonally. VDC was unable to correct my rouge mystakes. Also, VDC can't fully lock wheel wich spinning in the air.
Open front diff with viscous lsd in centre and rear, you need to let the viscous spin to do its thing also use the brake to balance the open front diff, you can change the diffs in these things easily but the viscous unit is very unobtrusive on the road
its basically a test of the traction controls reactive system intelligence or lack there of , now imagine a Subaru with front and rear torsen differentials where the wheel in the air with no traction cant get all the torque , or a driver selected lockers . hyper advanced "dynamic reactive" torque vectoring AWD systems used on cars with each wheel driven by its own independent electric motor take this to a whole new level as they dont need to use the brakes for traction control at all these systems sense the active traction available on each well and as a whole hundreds of times a second "plus" they can dynamically stabilize the car if it over or under steers ruclips.net/video/bD2Do1gAuog/видео.html
Your tires are great! Stay steady on the gas and let the Symmetrical AWD magic work. I did a video explaining this here: ruclips.net/video/rgKCfZgQUwY/видео.html
Manual mode + 1st & 2nd gears = hard locking. Sometimes forward tires were unable to turn because of too big... how to say... pressure, and rear tires were unloaded, so they were able to turn... Watch my new video ruclips.net/video/NSOAPX6AnHo/видео.html
Jesus Faith Thats called a differential. Sends power to whatever wheel spins easiest. Also, to iPhoneSasuke, easier on the throttle, you'll get a lot more places... and wear your tires out a lot less.

duuane cooper Yeah, that's right, incorrect working by throttle is the reason of my failures at 1st 2.5 min of video.
duuane cooper agreed. You can see at 3:55 is going slow and it's all fine.
No, you want traction control OFF. It handicaps you in snow and mud.

VDC? On or Off?
While I've been trying to climb at the hill, VDC was OFF only once (turn annotations ON). At the driving on snow, VDC was always OFF.

Да.

Not much to say pretty slippery slope anything might have spun out right there Jeep otherwise
