Just chiming in into this conversation as I think this is still worth further debate. Just saw a GCN tech video on lab testing in the UK (for the British Olympics team) on a drum(much larger than BRRs) which is able to simulate different surfaces. It allows actual riders testing different tires at different pressures. Interesting results, such as narrower tires are slightly faster (less watts) at their recommended pressures, all other things equal. As for RH, I’ve been riding their Barlow Pass Extralight (700C x 38mm) for almost 10,000 miles now. They measure 42.5mm on my 25mm wide rims. While the front tire is still the same, I changed the rear tire after 5,000 miles after a puncture that sealed (Orange Seal Endurance). I also have a set of RH Juniper Ridge Extralight (650B x 48mm) tires for category 3 to 4 gravel which I haven’t ridden much. Actual width on 25mm rims is 51mm.I would recommend their endurance version for that kind of riding (I slashed the sidewall of the rear tire during a gravel event and had to use a patch together with an tube in order to continue. I replaced the tire with the standard version). I have a third wheel set with RH Stampede Pass Extralight (700C x 32mm) tires and TPU inner tubes. I have had one puncture so far (a tiny invisible hole in the TPU tube) which I could patch; I still using the tube, and the tire has almost no wear. These tires measure 35mm on my rims which have 24mm internal width. I am eager to try the Cayuse Pass Extralight 700C x 26mm (that should measure around 28mm) to shed more weight and differentiate the wheel set from its all road sibling (I will try the 700C x 35mm Bon Jon Pass instead of the 38mm Barlow Pass as the latter are a tight fit on my OPEN U.P.P.E.R.

Gp 5K 700 x 25 always feels fast to me. Riding them on an older Tarmac I picked up a few months ago.

Love the Rene Herse Chinooks, I think bicycle rolling resistance does a good job but they don’t take into consideration how a tire performs (especially a supple tire like the chinooks) on an imperfect surface like pavement where vibration has an impact on actual rolling resistance. I found these tires to be quite fast and very comfortable but a somewhat short lifespan.

Interesting, since both your bikes are rim brakes, how about switching wheels with each bike, see if the GP 5000's still feel slower on the Bianchi. unless your Richey can't run 28mm tires (I am guessing it can). I know you put in ton of miles so maybe you know how the bikes feel better then most riders would notice, but different bikes is quiet a variable in the equation. Either way, if one likes them run em. :) Good video, Sir!

The Ritchey fits 28’s in fact it fits 30’s on 21mm internal 25mm external. I’m keep playing around but the Rene Herse tires are significantly more supple than the Continental 5000

@@andrewhamilton3486 that’s immediately what I felt on the 28’s. Also on non scientific roll down tests with riders 30-40 lbs heavier than me I see them pedaling and I’m coasting. I’m 150 lbs sometimes a little less and they are 180+ the tires feel fast to me.

@@SeeYouUpTheRoad yes fast indeed, hard to quantify, and the other aspect is how connected/grip I feel whilst cornering. Very happy with them. And really pretty similar price here in Australia compared to other top end tyres. 👍👍

I'm happy you give the Rene Herse a positive review because those are the tires I've been using for well over a year now. I have the 26mm on one set of rims which inflated pushes that width out to almost 28mm. And I have the same in 28mm that pushes the width out to almost 30mm on another set of rims. The 28mm/30mm tires feel slower to me in the turns, on fast down hill don't feel as responsive but I like the cushy softer feel. I've been using them for a long time and they are wearing slowly. I use RideNow TPU tubes which haven't flatted and I used Schwalbe TPU tubes which flatted twice. I guess what I'm saying is I'm either full of crap or just lucky I haven't had a flat in a long time. The roads where I ride are mostly chip sealed and I think these tires help with that. I think I will stick with these tires for the foreseeable future because I like them. When I need a new set I'll get in touch, I want to support you because I feel you are an honest bike mechanic that actually, well, I don't have to say it because we all know how many bad mechanics there are out there. Keep the good content coming George. And be safe out on the road.

Ride impressions can be misleading. The easiest way to tell the actual story is to ride both tyres back to back on the same bike and wheels at, either the same speed - and compare power (less power lower RR), or ride at the same power - and compare speed (higher speed lower RR).

George, you should try the Panaracer Agilest tires in 28 mm. I've been riding them for the past year and love them. I don't know whether they are objectively faster, but the ride quality reminds me of Rene Herse, but without the fragility and punctures. (RH are made by Panaracer, so the similarity shouldn't be surprising.)

@@SeeYouUpTheRoad I should add, I have also ridden the Agilest Duro version, which has extra puncture protection. I got ~3,600 miles on a pair without a single puncture. I wore the rear tread down to the casing, but front tire actually still has lots of life in it.

isn't the silca wisdom along the lines of "if it feels fast it's slow if it feels slow it's fast"? something. i like cst correre-s in 23 mm at about 60 psi, they're wonderful comfortable quick and grippy in the rain, even cheap. what more could one ask of tyres. puncture resistance is below average but not so frequent as to get annoying. they can be fit by hand on bontrager rims (this should be high on the priority list i think, can punctures be repaired without a tool on your specific make/model rim? important)

    • @SeeYouUpTheRoad

Yep that's what they say lol! Funny thing though in a group ride I find myself soft pedaling or not pedaling more than I do with my 5000's. Who knows 😀

After i read the BRR article i was curious about your take on it. BRR is the best thing we have right now for objective, repeatable comparison of tires. But a drum test doesn't necessarily translate into real world conditions and real world testing isn't objective and repeatable, so pick your poison i guess.
Just in case you missed my reply on your last video and since you asked me to report back on the Corsa N.EXT tires: First impressions after 2 rides are positive. The tires definitely feel fast. Not like I suddenly increased my average speed on the same route, but there's noticably less resistance while climbing and it's easier to push over small bumps like highway crossings. I also encountered a few hundred meters of gravel without issues.
But I'm comparing the tires to the Pirelli cinturato velo I rode before which are puncture resistance and wet grip focused tires, not as bad as gatorskins though. So maybe any more performance oriented tire would have resulted in a similar experience.
But at least I followed another one of your cycling tips, didn't you say something like life is to short to ride slow and heavy tires? ;)
Another thing I've noticed right after mounting was the my tires are a little undersized. The 28c measured 27,3 mm wide and the 32c measured 30,6 mm on my rims which have a internal width of 20 mm which I thought to be a pretty standard modern size. So I don't know just normal manufacturing tolerance.
