True. I like to look on the bright side; if Uncle Sam didn't put the regulations in place, engine R&D wouldn't have ramped into high gear and we would not have engines today producing more than 1hp per cube. We'd have the cheapest shit Detroit could make and market.
@@PrivateUsername We have had turbos and superchargers for decades. The Grand National and the Syclone showed what was possible. The technology is relativity the same. Fuel and oil are cleaner. But instead of introducing regulations slowly, they tried to chome out the auto industry. lol I knew this argument would pop up somewhere. Nowadays, there are a few cars before the GTO that fit the description of a muscle car; supercharged Studebakers, even the 1949 Oldsmobiles. But they were just considered fast cars. The GTO was the first car that started the muscle car movement. It sent every other manufacturer scrambling to make their own "GTO type" supercar. I've done some research on the origins of the phrase "muscle car." It didn't exist until the GTO was made.
@@davis7959 The 442 was created in direct response to the sales success of the GTO and offered a 330 cid engine. The Chevelle's top engine in 1964 was the 327. It was still the GTO that started the muscle car trend.
