Hello Gayle… Emma was one of the least ‘cold’ people you could imagine… The reason she did not emphasise the fact that she was Horatia’s biological mother to her, and to the wider world in general, was because she did not want her daughter to be stigmatised and shunned as she had been by British society (she was lowborn, the daughter of a blacksmith but rose to high society), and she thought that life would be easier for Horatia if People regarded her simply as the daughter of the highly esteemed naval hero. It was a totally sacrificial gesture on her part as of course she loved her daughter, as she was the only legacy she had of the love of her life Lord Nelson. Even when they were in debtors prison, she spent what little money she had on piano lessons for Horatia, so that she would have the required accomplishments to be part of society as a lady.

I am sorry, but at 8:20 you miss an important chapter, that's to say the flight of the Royal Family, the Hamiltons and Nelson to Palermo and subsequent return to Naples in order to eliminate the newly born Neapolitan Republic. Nelson had an active role in the killing of the many aristocratic and/intellectuals who founded the Republic, and such a thing shocked quite a lot the public opinion all over Europe.
It was one of the reasons which led to the disappointment by the British public opinion towards him.

Vivien Leigh played Emma in That Hamilton Woman, too, which is a fantastic film.

You forget the 1941 film "That Hamilton Woman/Lady Hamilton" starring Vivien Leigh & Lawrence Olivier. If you haven't seen it before then I recommend it, it's a great movie. Fittingly enough, this movie was when Leigh & Olivier started their own long-term relationship, which if I remember correctly was on/off again love affair lasting until Vivien's death from alcohol related health issues.
Question: have you thought about covering the biographies of film stars who portrayed historical figures in movies? That would be cool.

A pity you didn't mention "That Hamilton Woman", with Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. The scene where Emma hears about Nelson's death is very strong, and Leigh is a lovely embodiment of Emma Hamilton.

Thanks for bringing up the story of Lady Hamilton, I watched "Lady Hamilton"(1941) in 1986 from.TV channel but I have no idea of the background of that woman. I thought she was the wife of Lord Nelson.

The father of the famous English novelists Emily,Charlotte and Anne Bronte changed the family name to BRONTE to honor admiral Horatio Nelson as he was made duke of Bronte by the Neapolitan king in thanksgiving for saving his throne from the republicans."Bronte" which is ancient Greek for "thunder" is located near Mount Etna the Sicilian volcano and named because of the thunderous rumblings from that volcano.A beachside suburb of Sydney in Australia is also named BRONTE after the same dukedom. The villa and estate at Bronte belonged to the descendants of the heirs to the Nelson estate until quite recently when it was acquired by the Sicilian authorities.

If I'm not mistaken Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivian Lee starred in a movie about this lady, they were also in love with each other. Had to google it "That Hamilton Woman". I thought I knew this story. WOW!
